An Introduction-

“A Defiant ‘Verse” is a forum based Role Play game, right on this very forum. Set in the time of the Unification War (Exact Date, January, 2509), it centers on the freelance transport ‘Defiant’, which is involved with smuggling activities for the Independent Movement.

Characters are original, and the Role Play is to be Game Mastered by me (I will also be playing the Captain for ease when it comes to game mastering). This Role Play is based on no set rules, and your imagination is free to take reign, in the advisement of common sense, obviously.

However, before you try and leap into the little world I run, here are a few ground rules;

1) Game Master is your Role Play God. Hear thy word of feel thy internet wrath.

2) No killing of other peoples characters, without permission. Gotta’ place nice, now don’t we?

3) Use spell checker, please. I don’t expect all of ya’ll to spell like them ruttin’ angels, but use the power of the Spell Check, please!

4) Please, no aliens, demons and what not. Please try and keep to the non-canon but canon ‘Verse of mine, please.

5) While this isn't a rule, be warned that some times you actions will fail, your characters will be injured, if that is what I think is best for the RP. This, for the most part is to stop God Modding.

6) On a similar note to the last rule, it is encouraged that rather then using actions for everything, that you try and use dialogue to achieve what you want. Try and persuade each other, NPC's and Nathan. Remember that your own characters should be able to be persuaded as well. When trying to persuade NPC's, I will take into account your Character Sheet and your Relation ship with the NPC.

It also should be known that Nathan is but a tool to give out roleplay opportunities, not to give out role play itself. Be bold and take them.

Concept-

“Earth that was could no longer sustain our numbers, we were so many. We found a new solar system, dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. Each one terraformed, a process taking decades, to support human life, to be new Earths. The Central Planets formed the Alliance. Ruled by an interplanetary parliament, the Alliance was a beacon of civilization. The savage outer planets were not so enlightened and refused Alliance control.”
- An Alliance History Text Book

The refusal of Unification lasted seven long years in the shape of a devastating and bloody war. Tens of millions of casualties were sustained on both sides. Those fighting died for one of two reasons. What was right, or what was simply profitable.

The ‘Defiant’ is an Aught ‘3 Mid-Bulk Transport, property of Captain Nathan Rey, and flies for what is profitable as a freelance transport, salvage and smuggling ship. The crew is a rather average sort of the rim. Pretty criminals and the middle class are the usual to call it home. Like most crew, work is their uniting factor. So, where there’s a job to be done, the ‘Defiant’ aims to be the crew doing it.

The Ship–

The ship itself is a character. The Defiant is fifty-three years old, and through the rust, the grit, and the grime is a history;

It was commissioned in 2456, April the 21st by a small time shipping company as the ‘Simplicity’. Its days under the alias were mainly between the Persephone and Dyton colonies, the same run under which it got hit by pirates thirteen years later.. The fate of the crew is unknown, but in the bounds of realism they were either sold into slavery, or for ’Simplicity’, killed.

The dates of its next service are unknown, though some time after 2469. Its owners were smugglers of a distasteful sort, people smugglers. Their cargo required the ship to be lightly modified. For its new life of crime, it was rechristened the ‘Black Rose’.

The crew met their end by patrols by one of the many Independent rim-world barons. Short of money and in debt, it was sold off in auction in 2497 and registered to Nathan Rey for several Independent Governments and the Alliance. It is here that the ship begins a new life as the ‘Defiant’.

Serial Number: S117-B7C6-M
Owner: Nathaniel Rey
Class: Mid-Bulk Transport
Model: Firefly ‘03
Manufacturer: Firefly Shipyards, Hera

So Far–

“May, 2508 - Alliance forces under General Mordeau are decisively defeated by Prudence Vaughn's much smaller forces at the Battle of Three Hills as a result of Vaughn's brilliant tactics, although General Vaughn is mortally wounded by friendly fire. Mordeau retreats. Alliance losses are 17,000 killed, wounded and missing out of 130,000. The Independents, 13,000 out of 60,000.

- Excerpt from a Cortex News Wave, 2515 – Unification Day.

(2509, January – Current Date) For a week now, the ‘Defiant’ has been grounded on the Thebarton SkyPlex, a space station above Beylix. Rey has been indecisive about a cunning and dangerous plan to strike platinum. Despite of being a good reprieve for the crew, a week without work is starting to frustrate the crew.

The locals have also seem to have taken a disliking to certain members of the crew, so the sooner they get loaded up for a job, the better. Angry mimes and mislead feds could start to become an interesting mix.

Summary-

The RolePlay will take place around the crew, who will inevitable tangle with the Independents, Alliance, Criminals, the first Reavers and even honest folk. The ‘Verse is a tough place, and their pay check will rely on them Smuggling, Salvage, Piracy and Running well enough to stay in the black.

CS - Defiant2thelast

Name: Nathaniel Rey

Age: 34

Sex: Male, Heterosexual

Role: Nathan is the Captain aboard the ‘Defiant’.

Gear: Nathan is rarely seen without his trusty Six-Shooter, Worn Black Jacket and Aviator Sunglasses with his falsified Alliance Salvage Papers in pocket…

Assets: Nathan has various connections amongst both Criminal groups and the high class, and can be quite persuasive when needed.

Complications: It’s not an uncommon sight to see Nathan’s ego to get in the way. When it comes to keeping his reputation and his profits, he will stop at nothing. He ain’t going to drop that cargo if it is the death of him.

Physical Description: Nathan stands at 6’2” with hazel eyes, a similar colour unkempt hair and a generally disheveled look about him. His skin is tanned and his hands are some what scared and calloused from his salvage life.

His clothes are constantly dust ridden, and worn as are the clothes of most people on the Rim and Border worlds. His typical attire consists of his Worn Black Jacket, loose urban camouflage print pants, a plain white tee-shirt and aviator sunglasses.

Personality: Nathan can be more then a little egotistical at times. It doesn’t help that he’s also the same when it comes to being a hot head. However, it doesn’t stop him from being cunning and somewhat persuasive where need-be.

Just one thing is needed to be kept in mind when dealing with Nathan. Nothing gets in the way of his net profits at the end of the day. However, he is true to his word unless the profit is worth the impact on his reputation.

Background: Nathan lived on the Core side for most of his early years; breaks on this pattern to follow his father on his ship bound business trips. Like his father, Nathan became a somewhat savvy businessman. Unlike his father, he saw greater profits and freedom on the border and rim.

For his adult life until purchasing the Defiant, Nathan bounced between salvage crew to salvage crew. With the money and experience earned during this time, he bought the Defiant and set up his own crew. Better Margins that way…

Name: Dale Jaitjien

Age: 22

Sex: Male, Heterosexual

Role: Dale has been on the Defiant too long to be considered a passenger anymore. Originally a refugee student, he has taken on a number of assisting roles- including medic (not confident at surgical though), scout and agent- but is no master of any trade.

Gear: Dale doesnt stick to anyone one set of gear, indeed, he enjoys gearing to each occassion and taking on roles, whether it be posing as a slick waiter as part of a heist or getting into camo gear for combat/ops. He has, however scavenged together a small sturdy med-kit he occasionally takes with him whilst on rim. He's also found, cleaned and modified a rugged sniper rifle from the first firefight he participated in with the Defiant's crew. A multi-tool and pocket-tablet are Dale's two only constants.

Assets: Dale is slim and can both slide/sneak through places and obstacles others cant. He is also book-smart and perceptive beyond his years. He can get along well enough with anyone, but properly bonding is a problem for the reserved boy

Complications: Dale is phlegmatic and philosophic to a fault whilst in the black. Pondering bleak futures and agonizing over blocked potential and ambitions, Dale thinks far to much. He is also torn between his new, and now, only family (-he is the only survivor of his) and his need to DO SOMETHING.
Also, he isnt strong. Not weak, but he is less than useless in a fist-fight, unless he uses his head of course.
Dale is frequently in conflict with the Captain over the morality of some of their dealings and actions. This keeps Dale from ever fully becoming a recognized as a permanent crew-member.

Physical Description: Dale stands at 5’9” with large brown eyes, a brown-black unkempt hair and alternating between attempts at rogueish facial hair and clean-shaven sophistication. His skin is fair, but tans well enough and his slim physique can either look boney or leanly muscular, depending on the looker.

Clothing: His clothes are grouped into activities or areas of use, and he will generally dress to mix in.

Personality: Dale is an annoyingly human mix of traits including narcism, neuroticism, kindness, coldness, cowardice, but he mainly keeps those tumbled up inside. He can be sarcastic, witty, aloof, sincere and neutral. But under all these contradictions and conflicts, is a strong and determined core that drives Dale to surprising feats of bravery on the rare occasion.
He also has an oddly good knoweledge of Earth-that-was history, and often raises parallels between the present and the forgotten past- whether anyone is interested or not.

Background: Dale was born on Osiris, but his family moved early to a planet mid-way out of the system. The eldest son of a (rim-relative) well-off family he was two years into a medical degree when the civil war suddenly came to his (independence) planet. Escaping from his flaming university, he wandered dazed for days, until he happened upon a refugee/resistance camp and stowed away on a passing smuggler ship. There in it's cargo hold he began to ponder his new future...

Name: Maurie "Moe" Kasper

Age: 35

Sex: Male

Role: Mechanic

Gear: Black faux-leather jacket and appropriately vintage brass-rimmed shades; keeps a short blade in a spring-loaded sheath up his right sleeve, and a two-shot derringer around his right ankle. Not one to go around with fat bundles of tools dangling off his belt, as he prefers to leave them where they're most likely to be needed.

Assets: Quick-witted and canny with words; Coolheaded, knows when to fight and when to fly; Accomplished mechanic, guy knows his stuff; Fast draw and steady shot make him a sound last line of defense.

Complications: Doesn't mingle a whole lot, aloof demeanor and bouts of sandpaper wit oft had him labelled a self-important ass; Self-centered pragmatism makes it hard to win his respect and loyalty.

Physical Description: A tall man, with rugged good looks salt and peppered with stubble. A thin ridge of scar tissue hoops around his neck, arching from one earlobe to the other, no doubt a token of an earlier brush with death. He is loosely fit, with a healthy coat of fat and thick, muscled limbs. He might not have the endurance of a cross country runner, but he packs a knockout, and his knobby, callused knuckles attest to his readiness to use it.

Personality: Moe is a man wary of the trappings of an overburdened mind, and as such lives by a disarmingly simple motto: shore up the good and brush off the bad. His likes include high-risk, high-paid employment, and he gravitates towards individuals who demonstrate qualities of self-reliance, whereas he dislikes meek and indecisive people and typically looks down on most all instances of neediness. That aside, he also keeps a few hobbies: He is a collector of exotic ammunition and and his liking for unsafe velocities is what got him into mechanics and engineering in the first place. He lives his life looking dead ahead, his thoughts focused solely on the present moment, and leaves the worrying and guesswork to those still trudging under the shadow of doubt.

Background: Coming soon

Name: Delshadi “Shade” Whitmore

Age: 26

Sex: Female

Role: Muscle

Gear: Flat brimmed black hat, knee-length coat, endless supply of green tank tops, and mismatched pistols. Also often accessorized with various bruises.

Assets: Resilient, loyal, determined and resourceful, high tolerance to alcohol, good hand to hand instincts and excellent shot

Complications: Violent, hot-tempered, doesn’t tend to flex the brain-muscle as often as any others, stubborn

Physical Description: With warm brown eyes and unruly brown hair, Shade would probably pass as quite pretty if she put the effort into it. No one has ever been quite brave – or stupid – enough to suggest it to HER, though. Long dark hair, wiry and strong, very fit. Tallish, but not tall, (5’7”) there’s always a little spark of looking-for-a-fight in her mischievous brown eyes. Sports various scars, a few visible when she’s wearing a tank top. Has several tattoos, including a pale sword on her upper right arm, point down; a simple mandala on her inner left wrist, and a few chinese characters up her spine, (champion, valiant, and truth, top to bottom).

Personality: Shade has a soft spot for the underdog, and a passion for defending the defenseless, but it’s not obvious unless you get to know her. She seems brusque and cocky, impatient with self-indulgent nonsense, and certainly never quite what you could call “ladylike”. Too often, she seems to go looking for a fight, usually with a sense of ‘this is going to be fun’. Too often she comes home with bruises and other injuries – but she always comes home, and through sheer determination rather than any magical fighting skill or martial arts, she usually does more damage than she takes. She’s fiercely loyal to her boss – until the day the boss crosses “that line” and then all bets are off. Most of the time, she’s fairly easy going, a sort of slightly beyond tomboy, ‘drinking buddy’ sort of person.

Background:
About ten or eleven years ago, a somewhat scrawny teenager got off a transport, and disappeared into a crowd. That was the last time anyone saw Venice Casey. Her father put up only the most cursory search, and then forgot about her. The ‘Verse forgot about her.

Shade worked on various vessels and for various private parties over the years. Her first jobs were grunt work, but she did them, and happy for the chance at real work. Her nature led her to one too many altercations, and one enterprising old shepherd introduced her to ‘boxing’. It was really more a basic punching bag workout, and it gave her the chance to work out her aggression and learn to throw a better punch at the same time. She stepped up to guns on accident – a shoot out lead to a dead-but-armed-crewman, and from there an armed and pissed off young woman. Only thing she’s never sold is that one gun – Egg, after the Chinese man that had previously owned it.

She got a reputation for being a bad girl – not the fun kind, the ouchie kind. Eventually, she was hiring on as security, goon, even cargo handler, whatever job title they chose to give her, the real job was always about how fast and well she could shoot – and how much muscle she could dish out. More than once her femininity helped her get a job – they never expected the GIRL to kick ass – but Shade never paid much attention to it, beyond when she could use it as an excuse for a fight.

Work helps her keep her more self-destructive tendencies in check, occasionally even giving her a purpose. It rarely lasts. Neither does the money after each job – leading her back to the start finding a new one.

It’s suspect she harbors some sort of personal tragedy, but Shade’s not the sort to whine about it. There’s more fun to be had by living life, and what’s happened in the past can’t be changed.

(Note: Deslhadi is Iranian, and means “Cheerful, Happy Little Heart”)

Full backstory available upon request, but it’s all about forming the brain of someone like Shade, it has no other bearing on her present. Family is

Name: Ainsley Huntington

Age: 29

Sex: Female, bisexual (with a much stronger preference for women)

Role: Shuttle renter

Gear: Something of a clotheshorse with all her loose, sleeved satin tunics (shirts and dresses), fitted shorts/pants, and flashy sandals. Perfect style for a big, hot, crowded Core city. Also packs a non-lethal stun device.

Assets: Money. Lots of money. Not that she’s about to share and make things easier for the crew, mind. She also has some useful contacts, although not as many since cutting ties with her family.

Complications: Impulsive, sometimes to the point of recklessness. Does not take orders well. Tends to get in way over her head, especially with her latest venture. Sometimes acts quite haughty.

Physical Description: Tall and chubby, with brown skin, light brown eyes, shoulder length black hair, oval face, and a big nose. Much like an Indian from India on Earth-that-Was. (I have some character pics if you want.)

Personality: Bold and assertive, she walks into a room like she owns the place. She refuses to feel shamed for who she is, what she looks like, what she does, etc. She tends to throw money around, whether in donation to a beggar or to pay for a business service. Projects herself as more confidant and capable than she really is, especially when speaking with strangers or her contacts, which often makes her look haughty. Has few, if any, true “friends,” as she considers them to be a waste of time, and she does not enjoy opening up to anyone for fear of being too vulnerable.

Background: Born and raised in a large family living on the Core, she has a very noticeable accent, similar to Badger’s but more upper class. Her parents were formerly lower class, having gained their wealth before she was born through successful business ventures; but, their “backwards” views still attest to their upbringing. For instance, they always said she should have been a Companion, but they meant it unkindly.

Ainsley has spent the last decade working in business, at first for her family, and then on her own, as a higher-up in a business with ties to Blue Sun (although, really, who doesn’t have ties to Blue Sun anymore?). She’s heard frightening rumors of some questionable government dealings, leading to her anti-Alliance (though not necessarily pro-Independent) views, and subsequent falling out with her family. Her reason for wanting passage aboard the Defiant is to travel around and meet with her contacts, as well as build new ones, in search of more solid information about the Alliance’s dirty dealings.

Name: Jaclyn "Jackie" Holliday

Age: 31

Sex: Female

Role: Medic (specializing in orthopedic surgery a/k/a trauma doctor)

Gear: Dr. Holliday travels light, more gypsy than the type to put down roots, firstly by necessity and secondly because she likes it that way. Carries a medical bag with essentials like a stethoscope, pressure syringes, laser scalpels, antibiotics, bandages, and sutures. On a good day she has plenty of anesthetics. She keeps a petite and very illegal taser strapped to her leg, hidden from view, and a hand gun in the lining of her medical bag. She carries her clothing in a battered suitcase. Just the basics as far as clothes, nothing fancy; dark-colored to hide the blood stains. Most treasured possession: a small framed hologram of her husband, Danny, a brown-coat sergeant who gave his life for The Cause.

Assets: Her beauty gets her easily "in the door", her brains keep her out of trouble. Her training and experience as a physician is her most valuable asset.

Complications: Sets high standards for herself and others, sometimes to the point of contention. When she feels threatened, her first defense is a sharp acerbic tongue. On a bad day, she can be pessimistic and fatalistic, even falling into melancholia.

Physical Description: The doc is a striking woman, thin, small of breast, but long of leg. She looks every bit of her 5'11". Brown haired, brown eyed, with distinctive cheek bones and a cleft chin that she isn't afraid to jut out defensively when threatened.

Jackie's typical attire consists of a dark olive or brown-colored shirt with a black camisole beneath it, and dark gray, brown, or black baggy pants. Sometimes on special occasions she'll wear a burgundy shirt, but always colors that don't readily show the blood stains that often set into the material before she has a chance to scrub it out. She also favors dark boots.

Shunning makeup for the most part, Jackie's only outward sign of feminine vanity is her hair. She wears it in a long silky mane and allows herself the luxury of special treatments to make it shine. She experiments with it, wearing it up one day, pony-tailed another, or maybe in a single braid down the back of her long neck.

Dainty is a word that's never described Doc Holliday. Gangly, disjointed, clumsy as a newborn foal are more often used to describe her. What she lacks in the art of grace, however, she makes up in the art of healing. Her long hands and fingers are deft, steady, and sure.

Personality: Confident, disciplined, patient, and careful - all positive attributes in a medic. She can be funny, but usually fairly reserved, keeping her emotions to herself. It takes her awhile to warm up to people, but once she accepts them she's intensely loyal. She's conservative, traditionalist, respects authority unless they show what she considers bad judgment, then all bets are off. Still mourns for Danny, the love of her life, and tends to relive his last hours whenever she struggles to save a life, esp. when the patient's injuries result from violence. She wears her widowhood like a badge of honor and falls into bouts of dark depression on occasion. She's vowed not to anesthetize herself with her own drugs, but has been known to give in on the darkest days, like Danny's birthday or the anniversary of his death.

Background: Jackie grew up on a dairy farm midway between the core planets and the fringe. Her father raised cattle, her mother was a mid-wife, and she was their only child. Jackie knew early in life that she wanted to be a nurse and after her training went to work on the Core side. She met Daniel Holliday, a young policeman, and they married shortly before the War for Independence broke out. Both of them left their jobs to join the Brown Coats but a year into the War she was left a widow. Broken-hearted, she returned home to the farm to heal. She then decided to take the nest egg she and Danny had been saving and use it to further her medical training. It became her li

But anyway, I promise the rest should be of a more suitable length - just seem to take a bit to get her where I wanted her, without simply starting where she's ringing your 'doorbell'.

I hope those were ok posts :)

Name: Mei Lara

Age: 22

Sex: Female

Role: EVA/demolitions specialist. Also good in a fight.

Gear: There are two items Mei is never without - her waist-length brown jacket and her semiautomatic pistol (which works in a vacuum). Then again, she doesn't leave the ship a lot. She owns a Browncoat-issue spacesuit, and is wearing it when she first meets the crew.

Assets: Mei has logged hundreds of EVA hours. She has training in demolitions, mining, and salvage operations. She also has significant contacts within the Independent military. In fact, she is still technically part of that military.

Complications: Mei's appearance tends to unnerve people, so she's not very useful in most social engagements. She's also a dyed-in-the-wool Browncoat.

Physical Description: Mei is about 5' 6", with a slim build. She has black hair and brown eyes, but most people remember the fairly horrific burns on the left half of her face.

Mei's clothes are simple working clothes - denim overalls and T-shirts. Her most distinctive item is her jacket - a beat-up waist-length brown jacket. It has no insignia, but it would fit in perfectly with the Independents.

Personality: Mei can be cheery, but she often isn't. She's been through more than most soldiers, having had her home and ship blown out from under her. She's not very social with people who aren't her crew. At least half the time she leaves the ship, she does so in a spacesuit.

Background: Mei was born and raised on a mining/salvage ship called the Cavanaugh. The entire ship joined the Independent Navy at the start of the war, and was refitted as a minelayer. Some on board weren't too keen on the idea (particularly the mothers, who moved off the ship with their kids), but Mei took to the idea with gusto. She was trained in EVA and demolitions operations.

The Cavanaugh was destroyed during a mission at Athens. Mei was badly burned, but managed to escape in a damaged shuttle. The shuttle's hull had been breached, but Mei had her space suit on.

Mei nursed her shuttle all the way to Beylix, where she finally gave it up and sold it to a local scrap dealer. Mei eventually signed on with the crew of the Defiant, figuring she could do plenty of good as a smuggler.

Welcome Meshakhad!

I am sorry but I cannot accept your application. We have a mechanic already and he wouldn't like sharing the engine room. We also have a pilot/half-assed mechanic and an First Mate/Programmer and Electronics expert. I need to talk to Defiant about updating some of the crew roster.

However I'm not rejecting you. I'll talk to the captain about it and if you'd like to rethink your CS, please change your profession at the least, then maybe we can accept it.

I hate saying this but a trained mechanic and two others with similar skills are more than enough. Another and we'll all be stepping on each others toes and not in the good story and character building way. I'd suggest something in a field other than technical or mechanical. Be creative :).

Again, welcome and good luck reworking your CS.

P.S. Celestia, I'll post this evening I promise!

Thanks. I'll try to rework the CS.

The central concept of the character is that Mei was on a Browncoat ship. I'm trying to figure out what roles are still open. Any suggestions?

Check the first OOC thread.

We are mostly full in the traditional roles. However we could use a cook or something else unusual. If you can come up with something completely new all the better. We pretty much have enough muscle but if you wanted to be a more specialized type of soldier. Explosives expert? Maybe some sort of support position like supply clerk? Anything useful or original to a Firefly crew would be awesome.

Also if you could edit your original CS and not just post a new one? That way it won't be redundant or obsolete.

Thanks and I look forward to your new idea.

I can't believe it took me this long to get around to posting my CS up here.

*NOTE* Changes made from previous version!

Name: Lincoln Bargara

Age: 45

Sex: Male

Role: First Mate and Programmer/Electronics Tech

Gear: Not typically seen without his favorite cap. Wears mostly casual clothes but owns at least one well kept old suit. Rarely armed but when needed he prefers a concealable sidearm to a large assault weapon. Also owns a number of finer tools and computer hardware he's salvaged from other ships. Oddly he keeps a small brown teddy bear on the shelf over his bunk.

Assets: While not a trained combatant Lincoln's shear size deters most from attempting to tackle the mountain of a man. Despite his lack of training he does know how to handle a gun and has been known to be an effective brawler. He is a skilled computer programmer, electronics expert and a quick thinker. Having working experiences with both the Alliance and Independents he has numerous contacts among the technology and information hubs of the 'verse.

Complications: Chronic allergies and mild asthma keep him from pushing himself too far, but limit his physical activity little at all. He's struggled in the past with depression(triggered by past trauma) but keeps it mostly in check. He was injured two years previously in a skirmish with an Alliance patrol and has a noticeable limp in his left leg.

Physical Description: 6'5" and 272 pounds Lincoln is a literal mountain of a man. He has a dark skin tone and medium brown eyes. His hair is typically kept neat but he's known for neglecting his physical appearance, despite having impeccable hygiene for living on a ship. Hulking but with a gentle face he wouldn't be someone you'd like to meet unexpectedly, though he's certainly someone you'd like to have around when trying to avoid a fight. His size is sometimes troubling when trying to get around in the more narrow passages of the ship.

Personality: Rather upbeat and constantly trying to look on the brighter side, Lincoln has a tendency to become anxious or depressed while under stress, though he's very good at keeping this to himself. He has a strong sense of loyalty to his ship and Captain. Usually slow to anger, he also doesn't take threats to the ship and his fellow crew lightly. He also values honesty, if he gives his word you can bet he'll go to great lengths to keep it.

Background: Raised in a city on one of the more developed Border Planets, he showed an aptitude for computers at a young age. Graduating school with a Degree in Advanced Programing and Technology Lincoln was recruited by a large information firm on Osiris. He worked his way from one mindless, unfulfilling position to the next until leaving to find more interesting work. Shortly after he began a career as a electronics and software technician for a company servicing an Alliance installation on Boros. When the Alliance began to push outwards more forcefully he decided he'd rather not be associated with them and quit again to seek more neutral employ.

More recently he's taken numerous jobs on freighters, passenger liners and salvage crews, where he met and befriended Nathan Rey, having issues with their employer they both jumped ship in the same port and decided to look for work together. They continued moving from job to job until Nathan saved enough to buy his own ship, offering Lincoln the position of First Mate because of his loyalty and and keen mind as well as his talent for breaking up arguments.

Sounds coolio to me :)
Simple enough really, but then, we have a fair wagon of intersting backstories.
In fact, the boat is almost filling over!
But... FOR THE LOVE OF EXPLOSIVES!

Anyhow, a die-hard browncoat will be interesting to tangle with, what wiht her tendency to WANT a fight with the alliance as opposed to running and selling weapons here and there.
She'd be more liable to give them away free!
Anywho, think of the cinematics!

Also- my post- too crazy??
I thought it would be nicely interesting.

Not bad elpagan. Not sure what to say about Lincoln's snub, it just felt like what he'd do while I was writing it. Please don't read anything between the lines there, it wasn't personal. He's a bit preoccupied with his thoughts, he does that sometimes(I should probably add that to his CS). I think he just felt a bit annoyed with your sudden arrival. LOL

Anyway, lets keep up the winning streak folks! Maybe we can actually get underway on this mission. Defiant and I have some cool surprises in store depending on how we all proceed and the actions and decisions we make during the course of this. Nothing is set in stone, every plot is fluid and can twist and shape to our own narratives. Just remain canon and always remember to curb the angst.

I love this crew already.

Enjoying the posts!

Elpagan, I'm glad Dale jumped in there. I felt like he was getting left out of the goings-on a little.

I'm thinking he might spy on the doc once she goes to check out the infirmary, bein' as Dale's been the medic up to this point. Might be a good time for some awkwardness as well as bonding/antagonism fellow-medic/who's-in-charge kinda stuff.

?

What do you think?

Geez. Its a great idea celestia, but I really dont know how Dale would react. He's missed the fact that shes a doc, and she'd largely make him redundant. He is a logical "greater good" type most of the time and he wouldn't be inclined to growl or defend the territory when she'l do a better job.
If anything he'd joke about that ironically.
Umm, yeah. Mainly it'd be uncomfortable silence.
But then, silence and avoidance is communication in itself.
Sooooo.
Yeah, Dale'l be down shortly (not looking for her, he doesnt know where she is).
When would you be available for chat (perhaps in character) or series of short quick-reply posts? I get the feeling this conversation will involve not much back and forward, but lots of action and reaction between the spoken lines. Im on GMT+8hrs, and should be free most times in the next two days if you warn me soon enough :)

coolio. Thats your sig? :)
Anywho, Meshak, I
(mere participant with no authority or management involvement- so dont take this too seriously)
was thinking about your character, and the ship/crew balance. We're all fairly stern, shaky or cold. Right now the ship's "family" is pretty well hollow.
We need a heart, a...
a Kaylee...
I think your character could fill that role with a slight twist.

Shes a bloodthirsty explosives armed maniac looking for vengeance when any opportunity to harm the alliance presents itself.

Its a nicely bipolar source of danger and love.
I mean, we've got a boatload of self-interested bad-asses already. No warm fuzzies here, yet no true maniacs either. Now, Mei as she currently reads sure could fill the second role. But looks as though no one onboard is gonna fill the first role either.
Also, as she currently reads I dont really see where we will connect with her.
Imagine a hurt and vengefull Kaylee, with extra badass and a scary two-face.
I think this would be an amazing opportunity for character conflict and interaction in and around her.

Now that I stop scheming and think of it, its very tragic. Instead of having a heart of the ship, we'd have the broken heart of a ship...
It could be healed, it could be hurt,
but it wouldnt be hollow.
The defiant would have a capacity for all-
joy, rage, sadness, pain and compassion.

and at the end of all that, we'd STILL have
FOR THE LOVE OF EXPLOSIVES!

All said, I refer you back to the top where I reiterate- I have no authority nor do I mean to assume any.
Just uninvited thoughts :P

I invite yall ta take your shot at me an' mine ;)

I'll be honest - totally NOT comfortable posting for anyone else's characters, if for no other reason than I have NO idea how he's going to react.

Will he simply be happy to get his stuff back? How much is actually his? Did the pickpocket hit several people, not just him, or is only the metal flask his? Or will he maybe think SHE stole it from him? I just don't know lol

Besides, I come from a background where it's NEVER EVER EVER ok to post FOR someone else; unless something has been discussed out and both parties know what's gonna happen, and THEN you post for them. So.. we'll see if we have a chance to chat or not. I know I'm never, ever, ever comfortable with others posting for ME, because even *I* don't neccessarily know for sure how they will react - and they're MY creations! How can someone ELSE know what they will do?

If you can't post till monday, well, I'll live. Shade has to make ONE quick trip across the street, basically, to collect her very few belongings, but I can do that in one post before we leave.

There's also the possibility that someone from inside will come out. The door is closed, but there's a window, (as we all remember from Ariel). Shade also TRIED to ring the "doorbell", but I'm assuming it doesn't work since NO ONE inside was alerted by it.

So.. unless someone wants to hear it and come out to see what's going on, I'm perfectly fine waiting till Maurie can post. I've got plans this weekend, and my World of Warraft characters think I've forgotten about them anyway. (Between getting sims 3 on June 2nd, and feeling like posting, I haven't played hardly at all this month lol).

Oh, and Shade may be a badass looking for a fight, but Kaylee never smiled bigger fixing an engine than Shade does when fighting or drinking. Wait till you get to know her before you pigeon hole her :P She's... complicated LOL

Meshakhad, we're already started so you're probably going to have to come aboard, either as a passenger or by trying to get the captain to hire you. Only Nathan(The captain), Lincoln(First Mate), Bucket(Pilot) and Dale(Long-term passenger) were on the ship prior to the RP starting.

Have you read the IC thread yet? Might help to read it all and get a feel for how we've progressed so far.

Suggestion; might try just asking for passage and then negotiating a paying position at a later date(over or after dinner). But that's just a suggestion and you can come into the story however you feel is best. You can also try waiting and coming aboard later, if you like, either during the first job or after. Since so many others have joined up already. If the idea of coming aboard during the job is to your liking email me at l.bargara@gmail.com and we can discuss it, I have an idea for the job that this would work well with.

First posts are always the most awkward and difficult, just try to figure out a way to fit in and introduce your character. Good luck.

I could definitely try and be the heart. The original recipe for Mei Lara was:
1. Take Kaylee.
2. Put her through a war experience not unlike Mal's.
3. Give her some nasty facial scars.
4. ???
5. Profit!

The only real change has been in her skills and exact origins.

Mei has warmth inside of her, and she will open up to the crew - just not anyone else.

you COULD end your post with actually talking to us, so we could respond. Even just saying "Hi there" would give us something to respond to. Get you involved.

And give me a chance to post, as I'm practically BURSTING with posting energy, and NONE of my groups are really active enough to keep me productive right now lol.

Just a suggestion! Ending with an open ended post (with something for people to respond to) gets more reaction (and more for you to post to) than a closed ended post (like, just walking up but not trying to interact with anyone).

Actually, I guess that's good advice ANY time lol.

Hazard would be my crewman from my own ship - the one we spoke about. FOrgive her - I'm surprised she managed to say as much as did. She's new to FFF.net in general, and as a newbie, is probably about ready to scream at the general uncooperativeness of the site here. Like I told Haken - big fan of the site; HATE the format/software/site structure, LOVE the content and the people!

She's learning, and unforunately was unaware that it won't let her change her alias, even though it shows the option to, (our site lets you change your display name and avatar anytime you want).

Anyhow, forgive her the abruptness. She (and me too) just got to meet Bucket today, and she's been working VERY hard on a decent character (a passenger, and a (ex?) companion).

If you'd like a writing sample, she writes for Holly on Oberon and Crystal on Salvation.

FFF.net is a bit odd when you're used to other forums. Haken is easy and friendly to deal with though. It used to be you could change your alias but lately it's been weird about it. Emails too. I suggest just creating a new account, it's easier and faster. Also deleting a post is not an option so be careful when and where you do it. Good luck.

And... Welcome to Defiant

It's ok. I haven't had as much time as I'd like either.

I've just gotten a "new" car, my first actually. A 1974 VW Beetle, runs great, looks nice, needs a little work... not surprising as it's 35 years old. So I've been busy clearing room for it in the barn, learning to drive it and get my license which I've put off for far, far too long. After the 4th I should be more active in the evenings.

Also I've not heard from Defiant in some time. I'm assuming big RL stuff as he's never gone this long without school or something forcing him away. In his stead if you need anything just PM or email me ( l.bargara@gmail.com ). Hopefully he won't be gone very long. I expect I'll probably hear from him tonight or tomorrow. Keep the fingers crossed.

It's a volkswagon though. No computer, air-cooled... things will be driving on fricking mars, someday. It's in near perfect condition, the engine is anyway, paint-job was done shoddy back in the 90's and a few other bits need work.

Volkswagon's are basically the real-world equivalent of a Firefly, simple, far from perfect but just damn reliable and beautiful if taken care of and given a bit of love.

Personally I'd wanted an older one, but I'd liken my reaction to seeing this one to Mal turning around and seeing Serenity sitting all dusty and beaten at the edge of the junker lot. Except my baby was dusty and stored in the corner of a friends garage. He had to lift it and pull it away from the wall to back it out! How many cars can you seriously park like that?

I'm not much of a mechanic myself but I learn easily. I also have a pretty easy time with machines so hopefully it won't be so hard. My dad however is very skilled and the guy I bought it from is a friend and a decent mechanic himself. He only sold it since he didn't have time for it and wanted to spend what he did have working on his other baby, an awesome Oldsmobile 442. Can't get much different than a 442 and a Beetle.. lol.

WELCOME BACK DEFIANT! I knew it was just something simple like that. Glad you're on break now too.

Thanks in advance.

Great posts, everyone!

In particular, I liked Shade's comment, "War just took all the fun out of violence." Heh.

Also, I liked Shade's unusual reaction to Mei's scars; she's such bad-ass that she envies Mei's deformity.

And we get a peak into Ainsley's dubious intentions -- a very nice hook at the end of the scene.

Now I gotta go try to come up with something halfway interesting. *grin*

those are for a regular firefly, with dual passenger dorms. It's my understanding the original Serenity has only ONE, straight back from the Infirmary and lounge, but I could be wrong, I can't afford the actual blueprints.

More importantly, I'm not sure which version Defiant is using, best clear that by him.

My own Oberon is modified further, with expanded dual passenger dorms, a wrap around stairway around the infirmary and an extra crew bunk up by the engine room.

http://oberon.hawkwingaerie.com/index.php?topic=8.0 if you're curious to see what I ended up with.

We refer to the lounge closest to the passenger dorms as the "passenger lounge" and the small seating area in the galley as the "lounge". And I had so stinkin' many passengers, I had to make sure I had room for them all.

Hope that helps, and I'll have to let Linc or Defiant let you know what mods the Defiant might have.

Ok the "official" QMX blueprints of Serenity show two passenger dorm corridors. Bits of the series also suggest it if you pay close enough attention. It's been awhile so I couldn't point to them by minute at the moment.

I've also already mentioned two on Defiant, we can change it if Defiant doesn't agree. I've done a lot of thinking on the various ways one could customize and alter a '03. Serious amounts of time. I can say without arrogance that I probably know more than most of Firefly design. At least the "canon" and QMX designs as well as a bit of conjecture(well thought out and oft debated conjecture). I've literally poured over everything with a magnifying glass and loupe... not joking. The two corridor layout matches the series, movie and other "canon" and semi-canon material.

I should watch the series tomorrow, I haven't since late last year. That's the longest I've ever gone without seeing it.

Ok I promise I will look into scanning my QMX blueprints for Defiant use. I must ask that if and when I do that no one take them and post them elsehwere, out of respect for QMX we should only share them amongst ourselves and for RP use only. They may have blown it on the Star Map but they sure do amazing art and we should respect our dedicated and skilled artists, paid and unpaid alike.

*EDIT* Also I should note that not only are there two corridors but there are two levels of dorms. Remember the ladders in the series? And the panel doors above the lower ones? So there's 9 passenger doors in total ON SERENITY. Apparently the rooms are modular and can be customized into smaller or larger rooms. I mentioned the Doc's room being the central lower one between the two corridors(Same as Simon's.. it's the most convenient for a doctor). And since it is mentioned as larger that would suggest it's double sized... we should start a whole thread on berth's.. lol It's our boat so we can debate and rethink this as much as we like.

Did all that make ANY sense to anyone else? Or am I rambling incoherently? I will retract anything if you guys have issue with it or can give a good reason why this doesn't make sense.

Those blueprints are a bit odd, btw. From what I can gather the QMX ones make more sense(and are more screen accurate). Imagine the two corridors, but with less outward angle. Squash them together and combine the inner rows of rooms into one. That also explains a bit of the shape of Simon's room. Seriously it'd make sense if we could all see the blueprints... I am really working on that. I'll look into that tomorrow or next weekend. Next time I can get near a good scanner. I have more access now than I did a year ago(The last time I promised someone I'd get them scanned).

whoa. I think I'll re-read your post again later linc :)
Seems mostly in order, though I gotta say- I reckon serenity only has the one dorm.
As you said- theyre two story modular ones-
So theres room enough for all the passegers.
Then, theres the fact of the ship, its size and the space-efficiency of everything-
A ship with fold-out toilets doesnt have excess passenger rooms. I'd argue the dorm has to be singular to allow the back of serenity to curve in at the end. Also, its a light-freighter, not a liner-
it doesnt need to carry 9 passengers.

Oh, and celestia-
Sorry my post only reacts to what you've done, it doesnt do anything new.
I just thought it needed a dramatic add-break or cut-scene before I post the second half. Otherwise it doesnt really flow.
Sorry!

Linc, I appreciate a person's passion for detail. You wouldn't have to go to all that trouble with scanning and posting a slightly different layout of the ship, though. I can make do just fine with the one Shade posted. So, just when you have the time, no rush.

ElPagan, I forgot that Dale didn't know she was a doc, but I like his reactions. So, how will he answer the question, "Are you a doctor?"

:D

Oh, BTW, she said flak "packets", but you probably had Dale think "jackets" on purpose. I'm just making up some futuristic medical terms, but you probably realize that. I like the "molecuscope" as an evolution of what we call a "micro" scope. Heh.

I mean in regards to layout. Defiant and I have talked about a few points. A major one, sparked by recent debate, is the passenger dorms. They will be pretty different.

It's a different ship, hence different layout. For now if you aren't sure, ask or remain somewhat vague.

Funny. Odd... but pretty funny. You two are doing some good posts.

Niagra Falls? Dude... ok maybe it's from a book? I suppose if they know the Beatles it's not a huge stretch. Just remember this is hundreds of years in the future, in a society that knows little to nothing of Earth, even to the point of considering it a myth. That said I suppose little stuff like that can be explained as the name living on in memory and applied to places in the 'Verse. No worries though, it's not a reality breaker or anything... first person to mention Brittany Spears or something like that gets booted out the airlock, however. :P

Oh, hey... about technobable and such. I understand what you mean Celestia. One of my pet peeves is BS canned technobable. We'll try to avoid that here as much as possible. We just want to create a ship where we all know where and what we are each talking about and be able to picture it as best we can. Firefly is more about the character interactions and dialogue... which brings me back to my comment about remaining vague on location details unless you're sure of them. Focus on dialogue and interactions with shipmates, it's what it's all about anyway.

Also, my attempt at blueprints has failed. I just don't have the software, resources or experience with this sort of task. I have a couple people in mind to ask about it though, so it's not in the canner just yet.

Name: Ava Marie

Age: 24

Sex: Female

Role: Companion, passenger

Gear: Various outfits consisting of, but not limited to, a skirt and a laced top, which in turn could be one piece, or multiple laying on top of one another and flowing together seamlessly. Ava does have a few articles that are far from Companion standard, which you will rarely find her in unless the situation calls for it. She also carries a somewhat hand-held cortex (similar to that of a blackberry or iPhone from Earth that was), though it does not always work in the times that she needs it most. The only recurring item on Ava's person is a small silver pendant dangling from her neck, though it is usually hidden by the various jewelery and clothing that her profession requires her to wear.

Assets: Complies with the rules (mostly) and works well with others. Is trained in hand to hand combat for self defense, and has access to viable networks on both sides. Completed Companion Training.

Complications: Naive and somewhat innocent to the world outside of her work, and almost, but not completely, useless in a fight. No weapon skills except relaxed fencing. Occasionally forgets to hold her tongue when in a discussion or argument, causing a bit of controversy in acquiring her license.

Physical Description: A hint of innocence is hidden behind Ava's mahogany eyes, though the concentration on said feature is lost almost instantly. With auburn hair flowing down to her shoulderblades and her usual attire, the young girl screams Companion. Standing at a mere five foot four, her body is somewhat petite, though the immediate perception when dressed up as much as she is required is expected to be exaggerated in the wrong direction.

Personality: Having been accepted into the training for companionship at the age of ten, the majority of her life before was lost in the infinite amount of detail and poise from becoming a Companion. Soft spoken and well mannered, she retains the traits that her parents taught her about growing up and the world outside their home. She never would have expected to use their words so soon though. Always giving a person the benefit of the doubt, Ava is very easy to talk to and get along with, hard to anger, but if you somehow manage, you may want to run for the hills.

Background: Miss Ava Marie was born and raised on Santo, a planet near Persephone, with less sophiscation and hustle and bustle of the core planet so many frequent. Though the girl spent most of her childhood here, helping her family with their business and lives, she could not remember most of it if you asked. The reasoning behind her departure was still vague even to her, but at the age of ten she was taken from her home and shipped to Persephone, where she started training as a companion almost as quickly as she landed.

Regardless of her disadvantage, Ava excelled in all of her courses, though it seemed as though she had to work a bit harder considering her background. Even after graduation and earning her license, there are still moments where her previous status slips through and she must take a few steps back. Ava earned her license at the age of eighteen and has been a certified companion for six years.

Her specialties include, but are not limited to, escort, comfort, and simple companionship. Although these are very few of the skills learned while becoming a companion, and by far not the only things she has been asked to perform, these are her most sought after abilities. Whether it be as arm candy for a party or shindig you can not show up to alone, or the comfort after a traumatic experience or the need to be near someone, Ava is on the top of the list.

Nice CS, Ava :)

Mei - Shade is about to answer you, but I'd really like a post from Moe before she does.

Kinda wierd Mei turning away and moving on after she's JUST asked a question, but I just wanted you to know I'm not refusing to answer, and I'm ready to post, but I can't really keep going, when Moe is ALREADY several posts behind. The more we keep posting, the farther he is left behind. Outside the ship, that is - inside can keep moving, until or unless they open the door and begin interacting with us as well.

At this point, only an interruption from those inside will derail things, in my mind, until Moe can post. I don't want to ignore the fact that I've just offered him his recently stolen property, and he doesn't know how I got it. Wouldn't be fair not to let him respond, in my mind.

Dale and Doc, great exchange, very entertaining :P
