Well, all seem to admit Joss has a fixation on female charaters who can kick butt, oft of teen vintage. I was thinking about the source material for some of this. Can anybody help me fill out a list of female characters who can kick butt? Human mostly, but part feline, wolf, vampire, werewolf are ok, but android or robot are a sub-category, and dependant upon weapons and tools another (like Ripley in Aliens). Witchcraft or magic doesn't count, nor cartoons. This will be from film and TV.
Since I won't be familiar with some of the entries, please mention if they fit one of those categories.
I'll start off with River, Buffy, Catwoman, Batgirl, Aeon Flux, Resident Evil, Witchblade, Underworld, Star Wars, Bionic Women, T:TSCC, Terminator 3, Aliens, Blade Runner, Dark Angel, Ultra Violet, Bones, Blade Trinity, Matrix, Long Kiss Goodnight, Last Legion, LoTR, and King Arthur.
I will add to the list as more are given.

was Leeloo a butt-kicker in Fifth Element?
There are other threads here with similar themes, but apparently none of them in the Cinema Forum.

BloodRayne
Elektra
Fifth Element (Milla kicked some serious ass)

Fantastic Four (Jessica Alba)
Road Warrior (Virginia Hey played zen woman in Farscape, but Warrior Woman in this flick)
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Angelina)
Species
Stargate SG-1 (Amanda Tapping was brainy and kicked ass)
Starship Troopers (Carmen Ibanez/Denise Richards & / Dizzy Flores / Dina Meyer )
Star Trek: Enterprise (Jolene was the best part)

Kelly kicked butt in Weird Science?
Don't remember a Lindsey in Abyss -ed. don't recall her kicking any butt. You sure? Who's butt did she kick?
I thought the Starship Troopers chicks were weapons-dependant like Ripley.
Didn't know Jolene was a butt kicker in Enterprise.
Didn't think of anybody in Road Warrior as butt kicking except Mel.
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
You're right Kelly used a gun
Lindsey used some non-weapon to knock out one of the Marines
You're probably right about Starship Troopers-I can't remember if there was any martial arts type butt kicking
Jolene definitely did some martial arts type stuff
Virgina Hey

They all received the same training as the men, and had to meet the same performance requirements, armed and unarmed.

I believe T'pal was a trained martial artist, but I don't recall ever seeing her make use of it in actual combat. She did however shoot a few folk in various episodes.

Yeah, Starship Troopers didn't seem to have much butt-kicking of anybody there, and unless Jolene did some, not that impressive.
But I'll try to fit in the others as I get the details.
Thanks, and keep them coming, and tell me which are not really fitting. I wouldn't have included Barbarella - maybe as cartoon, but not as Hanoi Jane.

BSG (the new one- Starbuck and any of the Cylons)
Star Trek (the new Uhura does some butt kicking)

Well, are we? The series implied that we are descendants of Cylons/human hybrids.

T'Pol was a former Vulcan Intelligence Agent (with all the Black Ops Badassitude that entails).
And off the top of my head, she went hand-to-hand with a few Klingons (consecutively, not all at once) in one episode (after demonstrating on Travis as a sparring partner).
I recall being surprised by how little she used the nerve pinch --I only recall her using it on fellow crewmen who were under hostile influence (i.e., people who needed to be kept alive). She clearly wasn't the technical pacifist Spock was.

All these ladies are weapons-familiar to some extent or another, but I wouldn't call them weapons-dependent. They are all at least primarily human, with the possible exception of Ziva David, who I suspect may belong to some category of angel or similar celestial being.

Even Purdey (Joanna Lumley) in the New Avengers could kick butt.
Actually, Lumley is still kicking butt today: I don't know what she did to this guy off camera, but he's obviously been broken:

Okay, back the truck up. Padme/Amidala is a butt kicker but Ripley is weapons dependent? Padme used a gun in Episode 1, and fought a bit in Episode 2. In 3 she whined a lot and died.
Ripley didn't have much for weapons in Alien - she managed to survive when everyone else was killed, and killed the alien by blowing it out the airlock. In Aliens she took over the whole outfit, drove in to rescue to Marines when the Lieutenat had a meltdown, defended herself and Newt when a face crawler thingy attacked them... the list goes on. She only uses weapons at the end, and even then, she kills the queen using a loader and the airlock once again.
Sorry - I love Ripley. Didn't mean to rant
Does Jennifer Garner kick butt in Alias? Hell yeah, and she rarely uses a gun.
Starbuck in the new BSG is human. And kicks all kind of ass.
I would add Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) from Chuck, and Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) from The Matrix.

Hermione doesn't count for the magic and wizardry.
Are the other 2 humans, not aliens or robots or magicians?
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Katara's a Waterbender, which is a type of magic (though treated more as a martial art than Potteresque "point-and-click" spellcasting).
Teyla is human (though not from Earth).

I believe VeraSamuels mis-typed. Black Canary is a DC comics character that has been in several series; Justice League, Smallville, Birds of Prey, Arrow, etc.
If she was talking about two characters from Watchmen, they would be Silk Spectre 1 and 2, played by Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman respectively.

The companions? Idk how many of them match butt kicker status, I'm not sure where the line is. In the beginning, the companions were intended to bring in the younger audience, and so they're sort of in a Will Robinson role. Susan is the Doctor's actual granddaughter, in story, and that fits. Then Zoe was a surrogate. She was supposed to be 13 by story if I recall, but was 17 in real life. I know these girls saw action in the show, as did katy manning as Jo Grant. Sarah was the first one I remember being in combat, but I suspect there are scenes, my memory is just hazy, I have some memory of Zoe shooting her way out of a compound, but I'd have to rewatch. If your bar is relatively high (as per the Leeloo comment) then Leela definitely crosses it. As a jungle savage of the Sevateem, originally a Survey team from a shuttlecraft, she is made for kicking ass and less clear on the taking names. The character and the outfit could be the inspiration for Zev in Lexx. Oh, add her too.
Xenia Seeberg as Xev Bellringer of B3K, on Lexx
Eva Habermann as Zev Bellringer, Season 1, on Lexx
ps. fairuza balk island as the cat girl Aissa in island of dr moreau

Grace Park as Number 8

Some shows are just babefests, Farscape, obviously

I suspect Sikozu is the character I want to most not be in a fight with on farscape. After Scorpius. Gigi, I mean Chiana, probably also, but I'm trying to think if she has any unarmed combat scenes.
You have two remakes of this film. Anne Parillaud is the original Nikita, 1990
Also, Many of these women, including Geena's character from Long Kiss Goodnight use weapons, so they should be either in two lists or one. Also, not sure what the parameters are here, but that's not sci-fi. I'll admit she kicks a lot of ass, but she's armed and not sci-fi when she does it. But a lot of the women on this list are armed.
Nebula is a robot, i mean, okay, she's a cyborg, but she's a robot body, or she's Amy Pond. But again, where are we drawing the kick-ass line. Martial arts?
Maybe All the armed girls should be annotated, with a little gun emoji or something.
Alien's Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) really belongs on the list. Because if you're going to tussle with a xenomorph with less assistance than this, you belong in the non-human category.
Unless you're going to put her in charge

It's admittedly been awhile since I've seen Continuum, but I seem to recall her knocking some heads around in her supersuit.
She might have done some butt kicking in Star Trek, but not the kind we're talking about.
And yeah, P2 was more out smarting, but I just like the picture.

I don't recall a supersuit in Continuum - am I forgetting something?
Other than that, no butt-kicking action, right?

Dang Flickr, deleting my pics. Grrrr...
Not sure if they’re the same pics, but they get the point across.
Yay Imgur.
To add to the thread, Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter in Stargate SG.
Nominally the “brains” of the show, she could throw down when she needed to.
Yeah, I know she’s on the original list. I just wanted to post the pic.
