JK Rowling denied top US honour

Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on a top honour because some US politicians believed she "encouraged witchcraft", it has been claimed.

Matt Latimer, former speech writer for President George W Bush, said that some members of his administration believed her books promoted sorcery.

As a result, she was never presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The claims appear in Latimer's new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.

He wrote that "narrow thinking" led White House officials to object to giving Rowling the civilian honour.

The award acknowledges contributions to US national interest, world peace or cultural endeavours.

Past literary recipients of the award include John Steinbeck and Harper Lee.

Others denied the privilege under the Bush administration included Senator Edward Kennedy, who died in August this year.

Latimer claimed, in his book, that the veteran politician and health care activist was excluded because he was deemed to be too liberal

Maybe that's the real reason they didn't want to give Rowling any recognition... The speech Bush might've given.

That was probably a cheap shot, but I'm beyond caring.

I'm a fan of the books, but as a Pagan witch, I'm always surprised that anyone would think they 'promote sorcery.' Harry Potter is a classic tale of good vs. evil. The whole arch of the story has much more in common with Christian mythology than anything else, even if the metaphor is wizards and witches and spells and magic. Anyone who thinks the books vaguely resemble anything occult never actually read them, and it is just the knee-jerk "ZOMG these talk about witches and witches are eeeevvvviiiiiilllll!" occult = bad response. It's kind of mind-boggling to me.
Also, occult ≠ bad.

I think the idea that she might have gotten a Presidential Medal of Freedom was because for the first time in a long time, kids were actually lining up and begging to be allowed to READ. Apparently PN thinks that's a bad idea. I'll try to keep that in mind, and never read his posts...

For a country the prides itself on its " religious freedoms " it always amazes me that there is so much bigotry towards Wicans. I have known a few, and found they are probably the last ones to push their beliefs on others, and the least likely to use those beliefs to attack others.... unlike some Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc

It got me right away as well, and complete with the sacrificial chosen one, the whole shebang. It wasn't until after the last book that Rowling confessed: "I wanted to deliver the Christian message to people it wouldn't normally reach" Yeah, JK, sure you did. You also did a lot of research into what people buy and how to make fantasy crack. But yes, she is serious. What cracks me up is fundie xtians banning Harry Potter.

Methinks, from interviews I've heard with Mr. Latimer, that he's trying to sell his book.
