C'Mon, there have to be some. I refuse to believe that me and my few friends are a cut off island amongst a sea a Alliance folks.
To be more specific, there have to be more in the WEST of England.
I always see all these shindigs and whatnot arranged for AMERICA. And I have no money to fly there.
I propose, if there enough people interested, that an Army of Broancoats descend on a cinema in the West of England, Bristol area, on the Serenity opening night. For the first showing. In Brown coats and maybe JayneHats.
If no-one responds, obviously I will be there, in my brown coat and Kaylee boiler suit Not Giving A Damn aboutallthestaresstopthestares.

I'm from Swindon. I know there are quite a few from Oxford, a couple from London. Someone in Cambridge, Someone from Devon, someone from Lincolnshire (I think) and many others. Not to mention the many thousands not on the boards. (check out the where y'all from thread for a better list)

would love to get to Oxford. But I am somewhat allied with the Alliance in that I have a crappy job that wouldn't allow that kind of running away.
But if there is going to be some kind of enmasse outing for the premiere of the BDM then I'll go to that.. even if it's London. And I loathe London with a passion I normally reserve for peaodphiles, lawyers and people who talk at the theater. But Joss is worth it.

I'm a brit, I'm a big fan, going to White Room convention later in the year in UK, in October, where Knox and River will be attending, plus some Angel guests, so looking forward to that a lot. Will definately be going to Serenity premiere next year if possible, also there will then be a Serenity convention and I know the organiser is hoping to get quite a few of the cast to attend that, so will be looking forward to that one big time.

I've been thinking about going to a Con for the first time - I was looking at the one in Milton Keynes later this year.

Hi Ruthie,

I'll be going to Collectormania in October, have become kind of a regular. Was great in May, you won't be disappointed. Have a look on the website for pics from previous events. Is free so that always helps and you can wander off for lunch or shopping if that takes your fancy and pop back whenever you feel like it. I'm thinking of going down for all three days this time and perhaps becoming a steward but will see. Trying to overcome shyness to really get the most out of it and I get better with each con I attend to I'm sure it will be the same for you, just take the plunge.

I can recommend having a chat with Craig Parker (Haldir, LOTR) for starters as he's always great. The only downside is that some celebs won't do photos only signings but they don't have such restrictions at the London Expo ( www.londonexpo.com).

Will be good to see a few browncoats about the place, something else to look forward to.

In general I think we UK Browncoats are quite lucky in that we've already had a convention with three "Firefly" guests and the promise of the "Serenity" con next year which should be amazing if Starfury's past events (I've been to several) are any indication. Old Blighty actually seems a really good place to be a Browncoat and there are a lot of us, just hope we get the film at the same time as the US

I've been to the Collectormania shows and they're unbeatable if you're interested in the guests; their line-up is exceptional. Get there early though as each person only signs a fixed quantity of autographs per day and you need to get a ticket, which sell out *very* quickly. There's less appeal if you're there to buy merchandise though, as the show takes place in a small area within a shopping centre so there's a major crush around the relatively small number of stalls, made worse by the fact the centre is open to the public so casual shoppers mill around as well. Also don't bother if you're interested in just seeing the guests, as they're in booths and screened off from everyone other than those who've paid for tickets.

The Memorabilia Fairs ( www.memorabilia.co.uk) at the NEC in Birmingham don't tend to have quite as high profile guests but are better in general, as there are a lot more stalls and all the guests are on open view whether or not you want an autograph. The downside is that unlike Collectormania this show isn't free; it costs around 10 pounds admission for an adult.

In the end, which show you go to is a matter of personal taste, and I tend to go to both, each for different reasons.

There are means of getting photos at Collectormania without queuing, go for celebs on the end of the row as they are easy targets and you can also get shots across the row. Tough was foiled when trying to get pic of Joe Pantaliano, steward jumped in front of my shot and gave me long lecture about invation of privacy, will have to be more stealthy next time.

Had a lot of problems at memorabilia especially due to seating arrangements for guests. By putting Eliza Dushku on the corner they created a huge bottleneck as she was by far the most popular guest but I managed to sweettalk a steward into letting me get a shot. I think I may give it a miss in August though unless guests improve.

Are Starfury events worth the money? I may consider going in the future, distraught to have missed Fusion but am a latecomer to Firefly.

Heh. They've obviously changed things a bit since the one I went to (last year) as all the guests were in separate "booths" as far as I could tell, with high dividing screens keeping prying eyes out. I approached from every possible angle but couldn't get a glimpse of a soul

I think I was lucky there. I went on the Sunday, and, early on in the day they were letting people line up and take photos of Eliza in turn from a discreet distance. You didn't have time to compose a good shot, it was a case of step up, take your photo, and step down, but at least I got a reasonably good picture. Later on in the day, they stopped this though, as the stallholder next to the signing had complained about the disruption to his trade, and the fact people were still taking photos through gaps in his displays!

Overall though, I thought the signing was reasonably well managed, apart from as you say the position in the hall. The previous year the guests were all together in an adjoining hall and this worked much better. Arriving at 10.30am, I got one Eliza's final tickets for the day (647 - phew) and got my autographs around 3pm. One thing I was very glad of was the virtual queueing (an idea they nicked off Collectormania, calling up ticket numbers in batches of 50). Had I had to wait in line, I would have been queueing for 5 hours!

Yes, very much so. The ticket price is good value (even the full weekend ticket) given the amount of guests and other activities that are on offer. Sean, the organiser, is a fan himself and he knows exactly what fans want and like, so there's more than enough to keep you occupied for the whole weekend, for an all-in price of about 50-85 pounds. Contrast this with a convention I attended in London last year run by the US company Creation Entertainment, which cost 300 pounds for only 3 guests, all of whom were on briefly (at Starfury cons all the guests usually appear on both days) and nothing else really on offer at all. No video rooms or anything, and the event only ran in the afternoons as well!

If it's any consolation, I didn't attend Fusion either, it came right at the end of a very costly and busy month of events, gigs and fairs etc. I was desperate to go, as Jewel, my favourite BDH was there, but in the end it just wasn't logistically possible. I'm ecstatic about the news of the Serenity con though, and will book for that as soon as tickets are available.

Fusion was the first Starfury con I have attended, but I would definately attend another.

The ticket price was reasonable compared to other cons and the photo sessions were reasonably priced.

You could get a personal item signed for free and buy three photos for autographing. Autographs were done according to ticket number, so the higher your number the more risk you won't get an autograph. The Fusion guests were excellent because they were only scheduled for a couple of hours autographs a day, but most of them stayed until every attendee had been seen. You do have to queue a lot, so wear comfortable shoes.

You had a few minutes to snap off shots at the start of each Q&A session, but were asked not to take pictures during the session, which is understandable.

During the evening there was a fancy dress competition and a disco every night. I didn't attend these so can't comment on what they were like.

Overall it was well run and fun.

Does anyone know how much Collectormania charge for autographs? as I'm thinking of going.

Prices of signings at Collectormania vary depending on "status" of celeb. I got Corin Nemec for £15 and I think Gates McFayden was about £20, I don't recall anyone being above £25 but can't be sure. Tend to stick to getting my photo taken with celebs unless they're one of my fave's.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the London Expo though as the seating arrangements are good with space to nip in between the queues for quick photos.

I'm in the North, near Leeds to be precise. I'm always up for a convenient meet-up, perhaps in Manchester. Oh, and we're called Redcoats, by the way! (Okay, so it's not official, and I made it up and only insist on using it out of shameful egotism, but what the blim)

I am currently working on a cunning fan-fic which will somehow transplant the cast of Spaced and Black Books into the Firefly universe. Dwayne Benzie will be a key bad guy. "Hi, this is Dwayne Benzie..."

Cue montage of Tim Bisley larking in a saloon with his then best friend Dwayne. Tim washes Dwayne's hover-car as Dwayne boasts to him. Dwayne shoots a hoop and Tim applauds. Dwayne and Tim have a beer standing next o Tim's new Firefly class transport.
Dwayne: "Y'know, Tim, your ship is very beautiful."

I was at Fusion, and thought all the guests were really great, especially the Firefly guests.

I am also going to the White Room and I think its going to be a lot of fun, and it will be lovely to see Summer again as she really seemed to appreciate the direct feedback and love of the fans, and both her and jewel got a bit misty eyed at the end. I am booking for Serenity convention next April/May and tickets go on sale 10am monday 5th July, so form an orderly queue.

I'm currently in Leeds too, living here for a while, and we sometimes do have meet ups from the conventions, just a bunch of us in a bar basically.

I've written some fanfic too, its on here in fact, first two parts out of three are up, third part is done, being edited by a kind chum, will follow shortly. Its called Dire Straits, and wanted to get as close as possible to a real episode if it had continued, not any kind of romance that I fancied seeing blossom out of proportion between characters on the show. Have a look. See you at a con perhaps!!

Hey hey hey, If the name doesn't give it away my name's Dave and I'm a UK fan...... and I'm in the West!!!!! Well the South-West anyway. I'm in a town called Weymouth in the South of Dorset.
I'm currently spreading the word of Firely through the local area. My conversion count is at 5 (plus 1 at Uni in Loughborough).
It was weird being a UK fan beacuse as soon as I got into the show and tried to find more about it (checking out this site) I found out it had already been canceled. It was like being given a newborn puppy and having it taken away after a month.
But I'm probably saying nothing that hasn't been said before. But heh this is my story.

I'm loving the bristol premiere idea, have to start growing my hair to get the proper mal look.

Does anyone else find it a little strange that the BDH are going to be over here so soon after the movie premieres in the states. Maybe universal will release it over here around the same time as in america and they will be here to attend a premiere.

Got my tickets as well. I started calling at 9.58 and finally got them at 11.38 My phone bill is now going to eat up most of my Serenity money. Continually getting the answer phone was bad enough, but it was sheer cruelty to let it ring for a while and then have the answer phone message kick in. I raised my hopes each time it rang. Oh well, got the tickets that's the main thing.

Phew, I'm safely booked for Serenity. Started phoning at 10am and secured my ticket by about 11.50.

Just a quick question. I've been to Starfury events before, but not for a few years. The ones I went to had a block booking on the hotel so you could reserve your hotel room through the event, usually at a special convention rate.

I'm wondering whether this is still the practice for more recent Starfury cons, or whether I should just book into the Thistle myself?

I expect the event web site will contain guidance on this when it goes live, but any pointers before then would be much appreciated as I suspect the hotel will book out very quickly!

Apparently only 147 tickets were sold yesterday. People reckon there are going to be about 800 tickets sold, so even if you're 147th you will still be pretty near the front.

I just booked straight into the Thistle for the simple reason that there's only only more hotel over the road, and the others are a bit of a trek.

I would get it now, as by the time they set uo a special room rate they might be full. It is the bank holiday weekend after all, might fill up with people on breaks.

How did you manage to book? I called and was told they were not currently taking bookings for that period.

I wanted to go to Fusion but was too broke, can someone tell me more about the convention next April, principly where and how much?

I have never been to a convention, are they worth doing?

I was lucky enough to attend Starfury : Fusion and can report that a fabulous time was had by all. Gotta say, Nathan stole the show EVERY SINGLE DAY! The 'photo sessions' were a great idea - buy a ticket and have your photo taken with the cast member(s) of your choice, eg Nathan, Jewel and Summer together. We bought tickets late for the con and were hence at the back of pretty much every queue, but even so we managed to get every autograph and have every photo taken that we wanted. With that many guests and almost 2,000 attendees, it was quite some feat.

If you're thinking of going to the Firefly con next year but don't know what to expect, do try and make it - Fusion was exceedingly well run and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Starfury. Just waiting for my convention videos..!

Frances - you can find more info at http://www.starfury.co.uk/. It's usually best to book a room at the convention's hotel, as you're closer to the action, and if you mention that you will be attending the con, there will often be a reduced rate.

Generally, there is a small dealer room where you can buy photos etc, a restaurant / cafeteria for meals and usually some kind of snack bar. There will be a registration desk where you can pick up your registration pack and ask any questions.

There will be a main hall where you can see the guests' talks, then usually separate rooms for signings and photo sessions, if they do them for this con - but they were so popular, I can't imagine them leaving it out. In the main hall Starfury have a projection screen where ticket numbers are called for signings etc - mostly by registration number, so the earlier you book, the further up the queues you are. Watch out for your number. You are given an autograph card with all the guests' names listed - it will be ticked each time you collect one, to keep it fair (no sneaking back for extras!). At Fusion, you could get one personal item and three photos signed. For the major guests (Nicky Brendon, Emma Caulfield and I think for Robert Patrick too) you had to buy one of their photos (from the selection at the con) to get your personal item/photos signed.

For Firefly, there was a lovely range of individual shots and if you bought 5 (at £10 each, ouch, but worth it to get them all signed) you got a cast shot free - which was limited and could ONLY be obtained by buying 5 Firefly photos. The autographs themselves were free, but tickets for the photo sessions were for sale. They were around £15 for a photo with a single guest, then about £5 extra per additional guest. If you wanted a friend in the shot with you, that was an additional £5. eg, Bev and I had a photo taken with Nathan, Jewel and Summer, which cost £30 and our photo with Nicky Brendon and Emma Caulfield was £25. If I had had one taken alone with Nathan, it would have been £15. You get the idea.

In the evenings were themed discos. We didn't go to those for long but they were highly amusing - many and varied costumes were in evidence, around the general theme (Sunnydale High school disco one night, Toga Party another), and some guests attended. Nicky Brendon (Buffy's Xander) danced with a little girl of about 5, she was beside herself and the next day in his guest talk, she asked if he would do it again. He asked for some music to be put on and duly obliged there and then..!

Speaking of which - throughout guest talks, you can line up at the microphones and when it's your turn, ask away...

For those who miss guest talks due to queueing for autographs etc, for Fusion there will be a set of video highlights of talks and suchlike. Can't report on that yet as they haven't arrived, but I'm sure they'll be fab. I suspect they'll do the same for the Firefly con.

Anyhoo - all this fun was had by a 34-year-old who thought she was waaaay past conventions - haven't been to one for 7 or 8 years. But I was proved wrong in the most delightful way. Book tickets now if you can - you won't be disappointed!

Recently attended the Fusion con in Blackpool and have successfully booked tickets for Serenity. Yay! Nathan, Summer & Jewel were definitely the headliner guests at Fusion, incredibly humble and fascinating to listen to.

Does anyone know of a UK release date for the BDM? Us Starfury Looneys have plans....

Any-hoo - I think you would be mucho supprised to see just how many british firefly fans there are, infact someone told me recently that before the dvd came out on R2 - the majority of R1 dvd's bought online were being shipped to europe!!

The con being held in April next year is gonna be so huge, met a few of the guests at another con, and they were bowled over by the responce they got from the british fans, we made Summer and Jewel cry!!!

When I used the link to Thistle Heathrow I got an error message that the dates are not available,
could be that they've blocked them off for the convention and that they'll be available thru a different link/number soon
(I hope so!)

Embers, yeah the organiser holds loads of rooms on reserve for the con, its best to book through starfury events as they give you a discount on rooms, but you should still be able to call the thistle hotel to book if needs be!

I am a self confessed con junkie, as are many of the brit fans I regonise on here, so yeah come to the con it will be shiney!! - Its also a tres social event, of course its about meeting the guests, but its more about meeting up with friends and collectively enjoying firefly/angel etc, also most of my mates at home tell me to shut up when I talk about the Weadon-verse, so its nice to 'chat firefly', and not be looked at like my hair's on fire!!

Nic - we have to place that little trip to the cinema, if ya know what I mean!!!

Another Northern Browncoat here - Wigan - just off J27 of the M6.

I'm booked in for Serenity. I was planning to travel down by train, but it just struck me that if there's enough people wanting to get together from the Nort-West I could drive a car-load down - I have a 7-seater car.
I seem to remember that the hotel offers free parking for people staying.

Any interest?

I'd also be up for some sort of Northern meet-up or shindig.

I just took the plunge of telling my 2 sons that Mum has booked to go to an S-F convention - response - "One of those geeky things where people dress up?" "Yup" "giggle, giggle, giggle".

Sigh. It will be nice to meet people who DON'T think it's weird....

Firefly is quite simply the most mature science fiction show since Channel 4's 'Ultraviolet' and has more genuine heart than pratically any television show I can think of. Set 500 years in the future, Firefly follows the adventures of nine strong characters aboard the Firefly class transport 'Serenity'. The stories contained within this rickerty vessel are ones that revolve around human nature rather than shiny technology. You won't find any technobabble, nor will there be plots involving time travel, spatial distortions or aliens. The core of the show is human drama with a good mix of adventure, horror, action, comedy and tragedy thrown in... sometimes within the same episode! The nine characters who inhabit the ship are all distinct and the friction between them fuels the plots, as does their loyalty, morality and friendship. Remarkably, for such a large core cast, not one character is badly served by the script and each performance is on target and true. For it's size it is possibly the tightest ensemble cast I've ever seen within a science fiction show, the people on board seem to genuinely like each other and there is a very strong chemisty. The supporting cast are just as good, characters that appear only in one episode are very memorable, and you find yourself craving further stories about them. Badger is a personal favourite, a cockney crime lord with an inferiority complex and a wonderful hat. Or how about Adelai Niskai, a reputation obsessed 'businessman' with the psychotic demeanour of an aged Nazi war criminal? Or Saffron, the woman of whom if I were to reveal anything about before you saw the episode, you'd be well within your rights to shoot me with a harpoon gun? Firefly's universe of characters are its greatest asset.
Not forgetting that the ship, 'Serenity', is herself a character. Probably the coolest ship since the Millenium Falcoln, and just as desirable. A battered old cargo vessel with a penchant for breaking down, the drive of the show is the captain's frantic desire to keep her in the air, to keep her moving. Like the old navy captains, his ship is his first love and he is willing to kill for her.

The direction is never less than tight in the show, and has an earthy, intimate feel lacking in the standard sci-fi show. Every filmic trick is used in this show, keeping it more 'Homicide: Life on the Street' in visual terms rather than the remote stagey elegance of Star Trek. The production values are astonishing, approaching a high budget film in terms of effects, costume and set design for the two hour opener and the episode 'Ariel', and never looking less that impressive through the other episdoes. Sound is generally decent, the musical score is wonderful, though I wish they'd beefed up the sound effects of the guns, shallow as that sounds. I wanted 'Open Range' loud, instead there's sometimes a bit of a weird effect that's part laser gun, part pistol. Gah. There. My only complaint. Apart from that the production is wonderful.

Joss Whedon's story arc and writing are a career high for him. Despite one dodgy plot, 'The Message', each episode is a masterclass in adventure fiction with the speed and punch of Elmore Leonard's westerns. And yes, this is a western as well as science fiction, and it works astonishingly well if you look at the logic behind the concept. Horses don't break down and need repair after all on frontier planets, and can cover any ammount of terrain. And just because there is a colony on a terraformed moon doesn't mean that it will be a happy, shiny, prosperous affair. No, unlike Star Trek's spandex clad people and lovely carpeted enviroments, Firefly

Hi pleased to meet you all.

I'm a fairly newish browncoat who spnds half her life in Canterbury, Kent and the other half in Witney just outside Oxford. Now we know (or think we know) the release date for here we should see if people really want to meet up for the BDM!

I'm not going to the Serenity Convention, no matter how much I'd love to, so I'd like to meet some/all of you in person on a different occasion.

okay I reckon I'm the most south-easterly browncoat - but i'm open to a challenge, I live in Surrey.

I'm too purple to go to a convention on my own, plus have no money. or time off work or time off uni, and my stupid friends aren't willing to watch firefly even thoguh I GAVE one of them my old tapes and pesterd her for six months to watch them (and occsionally when it comes up)!

um forgot where i was going. no idea. anyway, who's with me to persuade them to make spin off toys - I require action figures!

I was one of the lucky few who saw the Serenity screening in London & will be going to the Starfury Serenity Convention at the end of april (in full captains gear, but maybe not Mal )
