Wait, is that morse code in the title? Can anyone decode that? (dash?)dot dot dot dot dot dot?
Am I reading too much into that?
Boychild was irritated by another boy today to the point where he picked up a (luckily nerf) bat and hit him in the face with it. I don't care HOW mad he made him, there is NO excuse for that. (I'm just happy that it wasn't a Louisville Slugger..)
Apparently the boy had kept insisting that if boychild didn't make three baskets the world would end (or some othersuch idiocy) and son played into it and got so wrapped up in it he completely lost it.
Oh how wroth I wax! The teachers said it had definitely been a two way street today with that one, but no it isn't OK to act out like that. I added Unacceptable, Bad, and Just Plain Wrong.
I refrained from verbalizing my immediate response, which was "You little bastard wait until I get you home!", and called his father to meet us at the school. We had a calm and rational discussion about punishments (he was going to be harder on himself than we were in some ways, not learning enough of a lesson in self control in others) and I hauled him home instead of taking him to the dojo.
The other boy is fine, apparently he might have gotten a scratch, and will probably think twice before baiting my son again. (maternal snicker quickly stifled.)
Just think MsA, in another 10 years you too can be writing this post! Enjoy!

No priveledges until they have been earned back.
(Wii, computer, TV/movies, and reading in the bathroom, among others) (Yes, he really does read in the bathroom, and hates spending time sitting without a book). The above to be earned back by no reports of bad behavior at school, work done on time, and doing what is asked of you IMMEDIATELY with no moping, mumbling, foot draggin, backtalk, or repetitions of the demands. To be succinct: signs of self-control. I've been hearing a little too much teenager-by-association in his inflection lately and it needs to stop. He's picking it up from the kids with older sibs.
He suggested for no Wii for a week, no karate tonight, and a probable spanking when he got home. I said I would take it under consideration and discuss it with his father.
Then Doctroid got in the car and things got mediated to the above. I just glared and made vaguely disappointed glances and discussions of consequences and feelings and needing to be in control of ones self in high school where people will try to push your buttons and get you mad because they're stupid like that, and that if you ever want pets and children of your own you have to be able to control yourself.. like I was right that very instant [meaningful baleful glare]. I think he got the point.
I do my best work as the silent and foreboding presence, tossing in a good measure of maternal disappointment. (He likes to make mom happy and proud. I am not above using this to my advantage. Every weapon in the arsenal...)
The lesson will be learned.

Sorry to hear that boychild had a bad day. But glad to hear that things worked out pretty well, considering. (Only the Louisville Slugger? Geesh, I've had kids swing the wooden end of a broom at each other, and others who've stabbed -- and caused bleeding -- each other with ball point pens...)
And if what Kel entered is morse code, it means nothing (unless TSS means something to you....).
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Well, TSS turns up a lot of results on google :P

MsA: Yeah that's scary. (Please, please, tell me you weren't doing teh crazy like I tend to do and jumped in between two kids about to smack each other stupid....er...dumber than they already are while pregnant.)
Sudden random thought SR: Wonder what boychild's karate sensei would do if s/he heard about boychild's behavior. ('m thinking that sensei might want to hear about it 'cause one of the things that should be drilled into boychild's head for karate is "fighting is only in self-defense..." and have a few other suggestions for any other disciplinary actions to use at home.)
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
He's going there tonight. Not going yesterday was part of the punishment. If they weren't picking up a lot of new material this week he wouldn't be going for the rest of the week. He would have gotten to explain his absence at that point. Pappa's probably going to mention it.
The senseis consider themselves a part of the "whole child" school/home/dojo thing. At least he wasn't using his karate! (Brown belt. I hadn't realized his aim was that good, now I worry more.)

I remember school as being a succession of these sorts of things, scuffles and arguments. As you say, a Nerf bat is luckily quite minor. Could have been a tennis racket, or a ring-binder, or a chair...
My brother simply sat on another boy and broke his collar-bone when he was at school.
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Neko- I wasn't there at the time, but the kid in question shoved a teacher ( who was 7 months pregnant at the time) to the ground as hard as he could. It was my last school before moving to nevada and the kid was only suspended for a day ( bad administrators who never wanted to deal with behavior) and returned. So the teacher quit.
HUGS Rosie... I say you force him to read something fluffy and pointless to test his patience and remind him he can't slap the author:)
OK honestly I must have gone to school on a different planet from the rest of you. I never even knew anyone who was in a fight and the closest I ever got to picked on was when a little school friend of my attempted to even my pigtails out using her safety scissors.

Yeah, definitely a different planet. I got my arm slammed in a locker door and my head slammed against a filing cabinet. Both times, I was punished for defending myself. Though the girl who slammed my arm in the locker was worse off than I was at the end of the day, I will admit. That was all in middle school. My high school was big enough to get lost in, so I avoided most trouble. I did see a guy get thrown into the safety glass of the library door and crack it all to hell, though.

I don't really recall any *fights* during the primary and secondary school years, it was more picking-on and name calling and verbal abuse between the popular kids and the not popular kids. unless you were a quiet kid, then you were kind of left alone unless someone found reason to suddenly turn attention on you.
MsA: Pushing a 7-month pregnant teacher and only got suspended for a DAY??? Smart on her part to quit, but that administration is just stupid.

I blacked a kids eye with a frying pan age four, got wierdly into a fight with someone I didn't want to because someone else pushed me into him during second year of secondary school so about 13 and I lost a day somewhere the next year when I got bumped by someone in the fith year, told him to watch out, he followed me to my next lesson, tried to intimidate me, apparently I told him to eff off (don't remember) he turned as if to leave and then spun and smacked me with the momentum. Came to my senses in the middle of a German vocab test and asked my best mate what was going on, why I hadn't written anything and why were peope talking in German.
I am so sore, going to bed, must drop in and be more sociable, hope everything is set MsA, and can't remember much else other than Kel & HK being mysterious and ninja like, perhaps I should have bought little ninjas for the wii so I could learn the way.

I always loved school, but there was definitly still plenty of fighting and bullying that went on there. Builds character and gives you stories to tell and all that stuff. School aint school unless you've almost been stabbed once or twice.

I was always the quiet, chunky, geek kid in school. For some reason I was on the edge of several different 'cliques'. I got along okay with some of the Jocks, eggheads and rednecks. Most of my friends fell into the geek side of things. Band,Drama club etc.
The only 'fight' I can remember being in was one sided.
My high school was a mixed jr./sr. school. Had 7th through 12th grade students mixed together.
One day while waiting in the lunch line, a senior approached me (A wide eyed 7th grader, barely 13) and told me to give him money. Being kinda poor and obstinate, I said no. The afore mentioned senor then punched me (very) hard in the face. Expecting me to cry or something.
I surprised him by not even changing my expression and just staring back at him.
Disappointed by my lack of reaction he pulled back his fist for another shot. He didn't realize the the metal shop teacher was standing behind him. Now this was about 1980 so a teacher physically grabbing a student and tossing him halfway across the cafeteria wasn't as frowned on as it is today. The Shop teacher was 6'3" and built like a stevedore. the Senior flew a respectable distance before being hauled bodily to the office and a one week suspension.
By that night the side of my face swelled up but I didn't cow to the idiot. Never bugged me again either.

.. I never got stabbed...
Man, tough neighborhood..
Boychild hit the same kid "lightly" in the eye today when the kid took some tape he was about to use. I am not sure if it was a "snatched out of his hand" took or a "was planning on using the communal tape dispenser in half an hour" took. It sounded like son pulled his punch at the last minute but not quite fast enough. I couldn't really say.
Again, continuation of no priveledges, he had to go to his room while I calmed down and figured out what to do, and then he had to get his social studies assignment finished before bedtime or there would be no dinner (which was a step back from BED! NOW! NO FOOD! and a good swift crack in the ass). We're at "any more of this crap mister and I'm locking you in your room during the party this weekend". This is why I send him to his room, it gives me time to think so I don't follow my other grandfather's example and beat the boy with a refrigerator belt until welts rise. My mother, thankfully, raised me with a different set of rules and consequences (possibly as a result of his example). So no, I really don't want to hear that I should be beating his ass to make my point, thanks, even if I probably should be.
Besides, (MsA rules!)cruel forced book reading is so much more enjoyable and does not leave visible marks!
Got any good suggestions for truly irritating reads? He still reads beginning reader books if it's all that's physically available, or has good artwork, but I think he has never been exposed to DICK AND JANE (Dum Dum Daaaa..! Nah, he'd probably like Spot or something.
There was some really crappy stuff in kindergarten which actually didn't have continuity from page to page or even necessarily relate to the page before it, but it was the curriculum handed down by NCLBthankyouverymuch"W". Perhaps he was traumatized then and can read on secure in the knowledge that nothing could ever possibly be as bad as that?
Of course I physically hurled "Frankenstein" across the room when I finished it for wasting my time. There have been a few I've given up on out of boredom but I usually refuse to give up until the bitter end.
OOH!! Worst Book You Ever Read! (Even if you never finished it) I'll start!
Unreadably bad: "Santa Steps Out" I do not remember the author. By the end of the first very short chapter the Tooth Fairy had commited necrophilia with a drowned man's corpse. I stopped there. (A good writer could have made that work, this one couldn't)
TOP THAT!!!

SR: Might need to talk to sensei for "in class lessons" on behavior (and it sounds like you've got a good sensei there...because martial arts should be a part of the whole person, not just at the dojo).
(I like MsA's ideas btw.) How does boychild feel about writing? Maybe have boychild do research (and no internet for the research) and write an essay on why self-control is important and/or things he can do other than hitting or hurting another person when he's angry/frustrated. Or an essay on the philosophy of the karate school he's a part of (including a proper bibliography). (I'm really not above using sensei/coach/etc. to help discipline -- simply because the ones I know treat such behavior as a reflection of not only the child, but also as a representative of the dojo/team/etc.)
Worst book I've ever read...I need to get back to you on the title, but it's a "Christian" book that has claims that make me go "WTH?!" (I don't have it with me, so I need to look it up tonight at home.)

worst book I ever read, Uncle Tom's Cabin; horrible polemic, badly written and moralising and might have started the Civil War according to Lincoln (can't remember the quote properly, it's early here) but it is a terrible book.
As for school, I was a weird mix of geek boy, class smart ass (essentially because I was either not stretched or didn't get it and not motivated, hence all the open university stuff now) and we don't really do the jock thing America does but I played on the football and rugby teams as well as good enough for county athletics. Essentially, my rugby playing protected me from most fights as I was knew the bullies and tried to stop em running riot.
As for boy child, seems like you're going the right way, speaking as someone who comes from a family with a fairly impressive temper history, it does take time to learn not to strike out, sensei should help by the sound of it but also, if it's not to hippy, meditation and gaining the ability to take a centering breathe so you think and act as you want to be treated can help too.
Anyway, I ought to be getting on,have washing up to do before work and all I have managed so far is to check things online, take pain killers and make myself a ginger and lemon tea!

Sorry you're having problems, Rosie.
My first thoughts were "What?! Just hitting him with the nerf bat ONCE was TOTALLY showing self-control," but then I thought better. Self-control knows where to hit the bully without leaving marks. See? See, people, why I do not have children?
Re: Worst book
"World Without End" by Ken Follett, or however the hell he spells his name. It was the "sequel" of sorts to "Pillars of the Earth", which took me forever to read cuz it was so damn boring for the first half, but I ended up really enjoying it. The other book, though? NO. BAD. And that's it. That's the only bad book I've ever read - aside from school assigned crap - because I simply do not read bad books. I have awesome taste in paper-wordy-things, I guess. XD

I've missed a bit, but for good reason .. BEST NIGHT EVER LAST NIGHT.
My parents are away, so I hosted a Firefly marathon .. 14 HOURS BACK-TO-BACK! So much fun. There were 10 people for the entirety of it, plus one who had to leave but has now asked to borrow the boxset coz she wants to see more!
Only 4 of us had ever seen it before, and I never realised how much fun it was to watch it with newbies. Especially Charlotte, my one friend, who gets so into things she was shouting at the screen. In Heart of Gold, she shouted at those guys for shooting at Wash when he and Kaylee went back to Serenity, and I was just like 'Uh-oh, what's she gonna be like at the end of the film!' She cried.
Anyway, amazing fun times were had lol.
Hope everyone's OK .. especialy MsA, you must be getting pretty uncomfortable about now!

I'm trying to recall the worst book I ever read. My habits of re-reading and sticking with authors I like have served me pretty well. I know there have been books I put down out of boredom or annoyance, and some I may have thrown across the room, and I'm trying to recall what those might have been... Ah, 'Children of Men' was one of them. I didn't even finish it. By all accounts the movie is less preachy and annoying than the book, but I haven't seen it, and most people still found the premise to be ridiculous and full of holes and what was the point, etc. Don't think it tops the list of awful books, but it was pretty bad. There was some trilogy I read earlier this year that was pretty much a waste of time, though I did get through the whole thing, but I can't even remember what it was called.
Snowed in today, more or less. Good thing I didn't have many places to be and the dentist's office was understanding. Give me a chance to catch up on correspondence, perhaps. Or I might waste the whole day playing tower defense games again...

I know in NYS you get 6 weeks mat leave, 8 if you have a cesarean. Is this not the same where you are? If not, that sucks. "Whhaaaaaaaaaa! U don' luff mee enuffff!!! wheeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh boo hoo hooo! Ima go let a vampire suck me (off) BEE-CUZ ur a strong innapenent woman who don' cry on my strong broad shoulderzzz when I want u 2!!!"
Buffy:
"Um. Srsly? WTF?? I'm giving you everything I have, and you not feeling it is my fault??"
WhineRiley:
"WHAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Ima leev unless u giv me REESUN to stay!"
Buffy:
"Um. Srsly? WTF??? You lied to me for who knows how many months, you purposely put yourself in danger, you cheat on me, and now you expect me to shrug it off, accept that it's all my fault, and beg you to stay with me so you can continue to tell me that I'm not good enough for you?"
Riley:
"((sniffle, sniffle, whimper)) ((runs off like a little school girl))"
Xander:
"ZOMG! Buff! WTF!!! He's so obviously The One! He luvz UUUUU! And so he lied to you and cheated on you and nearly got himself and us killed because of his own pathetic insecurities and all that, but it's TOTALLY UR fault. Run after him!"
Buffy:
"Um. OKAY! It's totally MY fault that Riley is a whiney little pansy boy who needs a damsel in distress to make him feel like a man, and anything resembling independence and strength makes him feel castrated even though I gave him every ounce of my heart and soul, and OH BY THE WAY, my mom is dying and my sister isn't real and there's an evil god out to kill both me and my not-real-sister. But yeah. TOTALLY MY FAULT. I'ma RUN AFTER HIM."

LOL! Okay, yeah, that's a good summary. I did relate to Riley feeling shut out a little bit, but I never thought that justified what he did, and never thought Buffy should have run after him after all that. I don't think she did really love him and I don't think she was very good to him, but then I think Buffy was kinda sorta a total bitch to just about everyone for most of the series. But anyway they clearly had emotional friction as a couple, almost from the very start. If they wanted Riley out of the picture (which clearly, they did) I think they could have done it without the lying and the cheating and the utter drama roller-coaster. It was poorly done. Riley had served his purpose in advancing the story and it was time for him to leave, but the whole arc felt totally contrived, from the moment he started to let vamps suck him. I guess without drama it wouldn't be entertainment, but they could have done it better, yes?

Well when you put it that way HK.. I get why you're puzzled... mostly I think Buffy despite strong and smart makes bad men choices over and over.. unavailable, unkind, unresponsive, or unremarkable.. over and over she's proved that while she can defend us, she's an idiot when it comes to relationships:0
HUGS Rosie.. I am taking over 2 1/2 months maternity leave ( which started 3 weeks ago) and that would be more than FMLA + totally unpaid so really really tough financially so there's just no way I could take more. They'd let me, but we just can't swing it:( Oh well baby will get to be home and hang with daddy so that'll be nice

I tuned out of Buffy shortly into season 4, but I've recently gotten all the seasons, so maybe (just maybe) once I've caught up on Burn Notice, Fringe and various others, I might resume watching it.
Or I could watch Babylon 5, since I've yet to see any of that.

Morning all,
to important matters, never really liked Riley, they seemed to struggle for a while once moving away from high school and loosing that high school is hell framework that had served so well, he was too clean cut, the initiative didn't seem to work for me, I get he was excluded but I'm not sure there was a strong enough idea of his character so what was there to like? It seemed they kept shifting bits of his personality as the scripts required it. Season 5 was not a strong season really although it does contain one of my all time favourite episodes, which we never get to see on tv due to the legal stuff round The Gentleman.
Anyway, work to do, hope your doing ok MsA, about all I can do really.

Well the comic books had him showing up briefly as a bad guy (at least, I'm fairly certain it was him) but unfortunately I'm liking Season Eight less and less and won't keep reading it, so I can't let you know how that turns out.
Still snowed in. My school doesn't seem to think so; they're 'opening late' right before my morning class. Which means instead of having an easy out, I have to email the teach and tell her I'm not coming. That is, if the school email system ever decides to load. Seems I'm not the only one trying to get on it. Blah.

Would point and laugh all crazy like at the snowed in PR but I don't want to piss off ole Jack Frost and have him speed up the Fluffy White Flakes of Doom in my area!
Never liked Riley.... he seemed too needy and well crybaby-ish.
But all of Buffy's men seemed that way. Yes even Spike. It really angered me when the Big Bad went all clingy and needy but he got better in the end so....
Man I miss that show! (needs to buy the seasons on DVD)

lol on the High School Musical comment XD (I haven't seen it, so I had to look it up to get the connection to East High)
My entire primary and secondary school career (with the exception of 8th grade) took place in my hometown in CT, part of a two-town district. I won't list all of the schools because all of them only housed two grades each (according to quite a few people I've met since, that's an odd structure) up until Coginchaug High. Interestingly, my best year of schooling, socially and academically (for the most part) was in 8th grade when I left the district to go to an inner-city magnet school, Thomas Edison.

Ya know until this board I was pretty much a Noob on the interweb board thing. I said some dumb stuff, did some dumb things whatever. No one yelled at me, made rude or derogatory comments or any innuendos thinking that they could outsmart me and still make me look and feel dumb.
I followed friends to another board and saw this shit and much more vicious bullshit on a daily basis. I never felt at home over there so it really doesn't matter that I rarely popped in (and that to talk to about 3 people).
I used to joke that if I wanted to see stuff like that I would go buy a few seasons of 90210.
It seems that stuff like this is happening more and more over here these days. It makes me sick and sad. This place was home. I was always happy to get to work and see who on and what I missed while away at night.
That excitement seems to be gone now. So before I say or do something stupuid I think I will just walk away.

I was asking you specifically tex cause you said primary/secondary school in an earlier post, and that's something I rarely hear from american folks. It's usually all elementary and middle, high school and such... so I was curious if you were in the UK at some point, or still were.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Lol, nope, right here in US of A. I just lump them into primary and secondary because for us it was two elementary schools (1&2, 3&4 grade), one middle school (5&6 grade), one junior high (7&8), and then one high school of four years. I remember an acquaintance mentioning that high school was considered secondary education, so I just lumped the previous 8 grades into the 'primary' category. Sorry for the confusion :P

I've seen it some here. I've experienced it here. Didn't see much reason to mention it or cause a fuss since that's never solved the problem. I just avoid certain places and I'm not on every day, even when I might have time to be. There are, after all, other things I need to be doing, and things that might be less frustrating. It saddens me that such things have driven Kel away completely. I'm not sure what specifically he was reacting to at this point, though.

mmmm hummus. I still don't know how to make it, and I don't know what goes into it, but it's still awesome.
As for the grounding thing, it seems to be unfortunately getting to the point where kids care more about having their video games and iPhones than books. The couple of times I was grounded from the TV as a kid(at the time that was the only real "device" we had, as the computer didn't run games, and I had to use it for homework) I'd just read until grounding was over, and most of the time just wouldn't go back to the TV unless it was Saturday morning. Take away a kid's xbox today and it's the end of the world.

FLT... here is coconut milk soup ... which by the way is the best sore throat and head cold cure ever
Ingredients
1 quart chicken stock
1 stalk lemon grass, white part only, cracked open with the flat side of a knife
3 kaffir lime leaves, fresh or dried, hand torn
1 (3-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
2 small Thai chilies, halved lengthwise
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 (13-ounce) can unsweetened coconut milk
2 tablespoons Thai fish sauce (nam pla)
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 (8-ounce) can straw mushrooms, rinsed
4 limes, juiced
1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves
Directions
Bring the stock to the boil over medium heat in a soup pot. Add the lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, ginger, chilies, and garlic. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and gently simmer for 10 minutes to let the spices infuse the broth.
Uncover and stir in the coconut milk, fish sauce, sugar, mushrooms, lime juice, and chicken. Simmer for 5 minutes to heat the chicken through; season with salt and pepper. Ladle the soup into a soup tureen or individual serving bowls. Garnish with cilantro. Be careful to avoid chewing the lemongrass, ginger, or lime leaves.

Ooohh.. I didn't have a recipe before! Thanks MsA!
I just sort of whipped it together with a shocking lack of lime. It had chicken boullion, a little lemon juice, some cumin, nutmeg, cayenne, and black pepper.
Apparently the spices really blossomed as it sat waiting for them to get home. oops.
There are as many ways to make hummus as there are to make spaghetti sauce and the arguments can be just as fierce. Smile and nod and take notes if anyone is ever debating it in front of you but DO NOT JOIN IN unless you are either part of the ethnic group having the discussion or a seasoned veteran with a very good grip of the complex issues of lemon and garlic ratios and proper spicing. Just. Don't.
Hummus is basically chickpea and sesame paste with (usually) salt, pepper, lemon juice, and garlic. It can be very elaborately seasoned, or practically plain, or have any number of amendments added. Chunky vs. smooth is not usually an issue like with peanutbutter, but you can get some textural variations. Babaghanoush is eggplant puree, very similar but different, and quite tasty.
MsA, i feel forsaken.

ok here's how you make hummus the sesame paste is called tahini and you buy it.
2 cans chick peas ( garbanzo beans)
3-4 cloves of peeled garlic
1/4 c lemon juice
1 tsp cumin
3 tablespoons tahini ( sesame butter sort of like peanut butter you can buy at the local health food or grocery store)
water
salt
Drain and put one can of peas in the blender. Add garlic , cumin, and lemon juice. blend til about the consistency of thick peanut butter ( add some water if you need to) then add tahini and second can of peas. Blend on high and add a bit of water at a time until about the consistency of thick and creamy ( or slightly chunky based on preference) add salt and blend a bit more ...
