Sarah Palin Can't Name Any Founding Fathers!

The question is, did she get the name because Beck mentioned him, or does she really think Washington was a founding father, or is she ducking the question and talking about Washington 'cuz she can't NAME any founding father???
The video is full of his own bullshit, but I couldn't find just a clean video of the interview.
As the guy says, Beck first challenged her on it, saying "bullcrap" and asking the question again, but then he went on to kiss ass with "He's my favorite, too" (hoping maybe nobody'd picked up on it?)...shees!
Does her answer sound familiar? Like when Couric asked what she read, she hemmed and hawed, "all of them"...same here. As I heard last night, "it's like when you're asked about a book in school that you didn't read...you say everything you can in general, but no specifics". Yup.
Did you get the "diversity" remark? Duh...buncha white males, yup, they were diverse all right...duh?

Wouldn't come up for me: "Not available in your region". Sheet.
But I did find this one...I love Jon Stewart, he often puts his finger on just the right thing. (again, first part--this may be the same as yours, but I couldn't pull yours up). And he doesn't care which side he lampoons, which is cool.

All in all, this is the most impressive Sarah Palin interview I've seen.

But she never HAS to stop digging now, Frem! She's firmly ensconced at Fox Noise, where they will cowtow to her no matter WHAT she says. She's found a nice little safe hole with them, and their audience is HER audience, so they'll eat it up like candy.
Whatcha wanna bet most of them don't know Washington wasn't one of the founding fathers either? Any takers?
Yes, I liked the Hannibal Lechter comparison too...I'm not sure I would call her look "caribou stuck in the headlights", I'd bet more like "oh, gawd, what can I come up with to answer THAT?" But you're right, she looked better in comparison, especially when he fawned all over her with his "journal". Eeep! ![]()

Okay. Bring hell onto me, but there's some points in Mrs. Palin's comments.
Washington was reluctant. There were plenty of folks who wanted to make him King of America, and he resisted this strongly. Note that he was a strong supporter of the Society of the Cincinnati.
From Wiki: "The Society is named after Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, who left his farm to accept a term as Roman Consul and then served as Magister Populi (with temporary powers similar to that of a modern era dictator), thereby assuming lawful dictatorial control of Rome to meet a war emergency. When the battle was won, he returned power to the Senate and went back to plowing his fields."
Washington did much the same, going back to Mount Vernon and his life as a planter. he was also reluctant to accept nomination to the Presidency.
It's interesting that several of you you find a pundit that's obviously strongly opposed to Mrs. Palin, and then buy totally into their opinion based on their obviously slanted interpretation of a video clip.
Looks to me like the posters of this criticism of Mrs. Palin are 'left loonies' and there are folks buying their loonyness.

For the record, Glenn Beck was on O'Reilly's show this Friday as he usually is, and they brought it up front and center. There was no attempt at all to hide or whitewash it. They actually chuckled about it in a condescending and disappointed manner. So give Fox a little break on this at least. I know it must hurt them to some degree, because they all clearly like her. They agreed that she had a long way to go to ever become a "pundit.", and this was only her first week on tv as a guest on every show. They said her power will be seen during the Nov. elections. I interpreted that to mean that she is a person who cannot have an adult conversation in a way that goes beyond her using the same old endlessly repeated (yawn) ideological talking points, rationalized and embellished with demented Alaska stories including eating moose eyeballs to help her grow spiritually. It must have taken incredible self-control by her not to say chum bucket all week.
I don't see how Fox News can parade her out again next week on their news or opinion shows again. There was discussion of her getting her own show. That I could see. I imagine it would be a new form of media; a cross-breed of Hillbilly Huckabee (with new cee-ment pond and critters), Rogue Romper Room (complete with sparkly magic mirror and skinning knives), and Whacky version of Who's Smarter Than A Yeti Embryo? Occasionally Todd will come out and give his opinions on a variety of issues including snowmobile clutch oil, best seasonings to eliminate that gamey taste in squirrel, and world politics. Then all the kids will come out, join hands in prayer, then let go, and run away screaming. I, for one cannot wait to see this show.

Shees! Well, I'm just waking up, so just catching up. Geezer, you're the one who started the mess with Chris by making a snark "Looks to me like the posters of this criticism of Mrs. Palin are 'left loonies' and there are folks buying their loonyness." I do wish you'd not lump everyone together and call them all loonie; it's bound to start something.
Okay, my point: There is nothing wrong with lampooning a political figure when they do/say something stupid. Jo Biden is a prime exmple. The POINT is that Palin couldn't come up with the name of a founding father to save her soul. Of COURSE what she said about Washington himself was valid and all were good points. But he's not a founding father! Beck asked her TWICE, and even pointedly indicates that she was trying to avoid the question, then she comes out with Washington!
THAT's the funny part, and any public figure who does or says something idiotic is going to be laughed at, okay? Doesn't make anyone a loonie except HER! And Palin has made herself such a target of ridicule almost since day one, it's perfectly predictable that each time she does it, people notice and people laugh.
River: thank you. I definitely give the guys on Faux News points for that, and I'm glad to hear it. It shows common sense and recognition of reality, that's something I can applaud whenever they do it. And I adored your concepts of her new "show"...whatever she does WILL be hysterical if they do it, but I've the feeling they won't...as you said, it would hurt them to much to chance giving her an entire show to illustrate her stupidity. It's just possible that, like McCain, they're regretting their choice somewhat.
They need to give her a script, which MIGHT help if she could read it off a teleprompter and if she'd be willing to, or else REALLY give her softball questions even SHE can answer...what those would be, I'll leave to your imagination.
Interesting: McCain let her do some interviews then his team pulled her when her brainlessness showed; Fox Noise might be doing the same thing, y'think? Heaven help them if they try to EDUCATE her...look what happened with that attempt by the McCain team!
Maybe they could give her questions about Alaska next time, or let her spout the stuff she's been saying and getting paid for? They sure gotta do SOMETHING with her, now they've got her, to use her to rile up the base. Even their audience will start seeing how stupid she is if they keep letting her get herself into messes like this.
Wish I'd seen that clip, would have been interesting.

Not a snark, just an observation.
Seems to me the folks who put the video you posted together are loonies on a par with pundits like Limbaugh, the folks who put 'birther' sites up, and those who create pictures of Pres. Obama in Joker makeup.
If I consider the folks who repost Limbaugh, 'birther' stuff, and doctored pictures of the President to be loonies, how can I not consider folk who repost character assassination of Palin in the same light?
Any of course you'll reply that your stuff isn't bad at all - just funny or highlighting the truth - which is exactly what the conservative loonies would say of their stuff.
Quote:
But he's not a founding father!
BTW, George Washington was a Founding Father, and is listed as such in many references.
For example:
The Founding Fathers of the United States were the political leaders who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 or otherwise took part in the American Revolution in winning American independence from Great Britain, or who participated in framing and adopting the United States Constitution in 1787-1788, or in putting the new government under the Constitution into effect. Within the large group known as "the founding fathers," there are two key subsets, the Signers (who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776) and the Framers (who were delegates to the Federal Convention and took part in framing or drafting the proposed Constitution of the United States). Most historians define the "founding fathers" to mean a larger group, including not only the Signers and the Framers but also all those who, whether as politicians or jurists or statesmen or soldiers or diplomats or ordinary citizens, took part in winning American independence and creating the United States of America.[2] The eminent American historian Richard B. Morris, in his 1973 book Seven Who Shaped Our Destiny: The Founding Fathers as Revolutionaries, identified the following seven figures as the key founding fathers: Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton.

Yeah, I gotta agree that faulting Palin for calling Washington a "founding father" really does make the argument seem merely partisan. It's a quibble at best. The fact is, the question was about the signing and who signed. The fact that was intended is confirmed by what River wrote:Quote:
If THEY think her answer was silly, why would they talk like that? They'd be lauding her to the sky.
....they brought it up front and center. There was no attempt at all to hide or whitewash it. They actually chuckled about it in a condescending and disappointed manner.
Quoting the idea that everyone involved in the revolution was a "founding father" doesn't change what people BELIEVE and what people mean when they refer to the "founding fathers". If Beck and O'Reily picked up on it, it's not being seen through some partisan veil. Or are you saying they're loonies too?
As to what we find humor in, Palin provides it herself. The clip stands on its own merits; nobody changed her words, made out she was a terrorist, hated white people, a socialist, an illegal alien, a Nazi, or any of the other things those on the right have hurled.
You need to show a clip where someone actually makes a foolish statement on the left to make a comparison. Actually, for your claim to be accurate, you have to show MANY to equate the left to the right in these times. Because there are tons and tons of clips from the people saying health reform will "put grandma to death" to the birthers, the worst tea party nutcases, Faux News fraudulently and all-too-obviously using clips from an entirely different season to make it look like their "protest" drew more people than it actually did, and on and on. All that is fair game.
I don't know how it was in past times, but right now, there are an awful lot of people out there providing clips of their own words making themselves look stupid.
And, uh, we DO laugh at Clinton...and Biden, and Letterman, and other people on the left who make stupid remarks or do stupid things. If you can't see that, then your partisan blinders are on, in which case your argument doesn't stand. Just because there are more right-wingers out right now providing humor via clips of their own words doesn't make laughing at them partisan. Can you understand the difference and what I'm trying to say?
I guess it's basically: Showing a clip of someone saying something stupid does not equate to faking something to laugh at/make your point/attack someone. Showing someone's own actions/words does not equate to calling people names or faking stuff to make your point. Doesn't make whoever puts the clip up a "loony".

Only Bill can make "sleazy" look so awesome.
I for one, do not feel one bit guilty about mocking ANY public figure who deliberately and intentionally stepped onto the public stage by entering national politics - if folk got a problem with that, maybe the person shoulda stayed home, and to espouse the idea that ridiculing public figures should be off-limits is just asking for the kind of radical nuttery which leads to some seriously dark places.
And BECAUSE OF THAT, we need to *treasure* ridicule, no matter how partisan it is, cause taking these people seriously leads to them taking themselves seriously, and that's a damned bad idea.
All that said, I mock her not cause she's a dimwit, but because I believe her to be IMHO, insane and potentially dangerous given even the slightest bit of power, and making her a laughingstock is the surest way to make well sure that it never, EVER happens...
Of course, when she does half the job for me I don't worry so much.

Try watching the video. At about 2:10, Beck asked, "Who's your favorite Founder?" Also, the commentator, at 4:58, repeats Beck's question as "who's your favorite Founding Father?", and again at about 6:30.

Now you're just getting silly. Pretty much every source I can find discussing the Founding Fathers includes Washington as one of them. I find it hard to believe that you can make the assertion that the man who lead Continental forces to victory over the British, presided over the Constitutional Convention, and was the first President of the United States should not be considered a Founding Father.

Apparently a lot of history sites, historians and authors do consider the Founding Fathers a diverse group.

He failed at what he was trying to do, if that was it; he looks more to me like Popeye, with his huge hands and skinny arms and leeetle tiny head! His hands are bigger than his head...you sure it wasn't photoshopped? Like by someone who hated him? Tho' I imagine he had to proof it, didn't he? Shees...
Somebody should have told him that Lincoln kept his LEGS TOGETHER, which made him look wise and still...given the idiocy of Clinton's actions, that cover is hysterical--would do well as a cover for Mad Magazine! I don't think he made sleazy look awesome, more like "disproportionate horny sleaze you should never trust or let near your daughter!" (and I'm a Clinton fan, mind you)
Niki, I think that's EXACTLY the pose Clinton WANTS people to see. Big hands? Check. (You know what big hands are a sign of, allegedly, right?). Legs apart? Check.
Slippery Bill, aka Slick Willie, WANTS you - and all ladies, of course - to see him as being right out there; he finds this kind of display EMPOWERING, because it gives him all the more chance to remind all women everywhere of his sexual power and prowess.

As for Clinton, well, he was crooked sleaze, but it's par for the course - whilst death and time have a way of reducing a mans flaws in the public eye, Kennedy was about as bad, and I found it utterly incomprehensible that a guy with the looks and personality of LBJ managed to get laid at all, much less so damned often, and so brazenly, or even why he felt the need when Ladybird was such a sweetheart (and how the HELL did she wind up marryin him ?!).
As for the founding fathers, for their time they were fairly diverse, which ain't sayin much, but my favorite amongst them was kinda an anti-founding father, who's temperment and ethnicity made him a little unwelcome amongst them to begin with, good ole Patrick Henry, who was so right when he started busting their chops it bordered on prophetic.
Thing with Sarah ain't that she didn't know, it's that she has no recovery and can't bluff worth a damn, and her incompetence WITHIN her chosen field would make voting her into a public office an act of criminal negligence IMHO since I rather doubt that foreign powers would be so kind or forgiving during Treaty negotiations, which is potentially disastrous since Treaties carry the whole force of the Constitution behind them.
(something Biden is trying to pull an end run with in regards to ACTA)
She's a goldfish dumped from her comfy little bowl into the shark infested ocean, clearly out of her league and so clueless as to be unaware of it, which means she doesn't even have the goddamn good sense to listen to the advice of folk trying to keep her from ramming her heel into the back of her palate every time she opens her damned mouth...
And that's what you get when you put a petty little small town politician without a lick of sense (cue: Harper Valley PTA Theme) on the national stage, even if they DO mean well (See: Mike Gravel) which she most certainly does not given her previous history of behavior.
Hell YES I am going to mock her, the wooden stake of ridicule, to make sure her supposed political career stays in the coffin it belongs in!

Geezer, I wrote when I posted the clip that I was unable to find a "clean" video, and I couldn't access the link that HAD been provided, so I was putting up the best I could find--there WERE worse ones, like Kimmel's, which I rejected. I guess you didn't read that part. If I could have found a video clip of nothing BUT the interview, I would have put that up--I try whenever I find something I want to put up, to avoid someone else's commentated clip and find just the material I'm seeking.
I was trying to say that in general, people consider the signers as the "founding fathers". That's how people refer to them, as the ones who created the Constitution and our form of government. To deny that is silly, in my opinion, given that the reference is made time and time again, recently by the Right as an indiction that Obama is--whatever they want him to be at the moment. C'mon, be it truth or otherwise, you can't tell me that all the bullshit that comes out nowadays about "not what the Founding Fathers (capitalized) meant for our country" refers to anyone but those who wrote the Constitution? I'm not arguing "fact", I'm arguing "perception"--and again, if the Faux News commentators themselves snarked gently about it, that's what BECK meant, too.
As to "diverse", sorry, I don't consider a bunch of white males as being "diverse", whatever their differing politics may be. They all had similar basic beliefs and basic intent, and "diversity" in the form of writing the Constitution wiht recognition of women and other ethnicities as valid wasn't there, period.
Mike, if you're right about Clinton, that's pathetic...tho' I knew he was pathetic about his desire to be seen as virile anyway. Shees.
Beyond that Geezer, Frem's entire long post speaks for me when it comes to Palin, so I won't be redundant. I will ad, however, that as I said in another thread, I don't think the "French President" thing spoke to stupidity, but to what Frem described: Big fish in little pond thrown in big pond.
As to an interview with Beck, I think all one needs is to have awakened that morning with half their brain working, and a strong analgesic or whatever one needs to keep from vomitting. The self-control to keep from laughing hysterically would help, too.
As to the entire rest of this thread, why is anyone paying attention to this idiocy? Wasted a good thirty seconds of my time I'll never get back. Simple solution: DON'T RESPOND!!!

Please stop. In the generally accepted historical terminology, the "Signers" were the people who wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence. The People who wrote and signed the Constitution were the "Framers". http://www.usconstitution.net/declarsigndata.html
http://www.usconstitution.net/constframedata.html
They are all "Founding Fathers" in any reputable historical source, along with other folk like Ethan Allen, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, John Jay, John Marshall, etc. who signed neither document but had quite a lot to do with American independence and the founding of the United States.

I mean - really - stop. Now you're citing right-wing propaganda as proof of what America believes?
It's a moot point anyway, since Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention and signed the Constitution. So even if you (and Glenn Beck, and the entire right-wing) consider the folks who wrote the Constitution to be the one-and-only, exclusive, accept-no-substitutes, dyed-in-the-wool, guaranteed authentic Founding Fathers, Washington is still one.

If diversity applied only to sex, race and ethnicity, you'd be right. However, diversity can also apply to politics, philosophy, and opinion (among other things). In the 18th century the folks writing the Constitution were about as wide-ranging a group, politically and philisophically, as you were likely to get. Northerners, and Southerners; plantation owners and industrialists and bankers; folks who wanted a stong Federal government and those who wanted a loose confederation of states; slaveholders and those who wanted to free the slaves - sometimes the same people holding both views.
But answer this totally honestly, even if just to yourself. If someone asked you out of the blue to name your favorite, say, Supreme Court Justice or Speaker of the House, could you come up with a name and reason in a couple of seconds, or might you hem and haw a bit first?

Y'know, I've kinda gotta go with Geezer on this one. Washington IS a Founding Father. Hell, to a great number of people he is THE Founding Father, the ONE they all know before Jefferson, Adams (John and Samuel both!), Franklin, or even John Hancock (he of the overly large and flourish-y signature!).
Here's a quick excerpt from the Wiki entry:
Quote:
Most historians define the "founding fathers" to mean a larger group, including not only the Signers and the Framers but also all those who, whether as politicians or jurists or statesmen or soldiers or diplomats or ordinary citizens, took part in winning American independence and creating the United States of America. The eminent American historian Richard B.
So, although this comes AFTER the Wiki bit about the Framers and the Signers, it still clearly includes Washington. Ask yourself this question, and see if it changes your view: Without George Washington to lead the Continental Army to victory, what exactly would the Founding Fathers have founded? For without Washington, there would BE no founding of this nation, because the Revolution would have been crushed, and every single one of the Founding Fathers would have been hanged as a traitor.
If that doesn't buy you entry into that exclusive company, I sure as hell don't know what does.
Like I said above, the funny isn't that she went with Washington as a founder, but that she went with the "all of them" line. Again.

Okay. I'll address your question again.
First, knowing American history isn't, or shouldn't be, specialist knowledge for politicians alone. That being said, I doubt that most politicians, or citizens, could name more than five of either Signers or Framers, and would probably have trouble naming ten of the broadest pool of "Founding Fathers".
Second, Palin did answer Beck's question about her favorite Founder. She named George Washington(probably the most well-known and liked by the population at large) and cited, quite accurately, his disinclination to be involved in government, but willingness to serve for the greater good, as a reason he was her favorite.
Third, George Washington, by any criteria, WAS a Founding Father, dispite Niki's quibbles and circumlocutions, so the title of this thread is obviously incorrect.
Fourth, my favorite lead strike is a .308 caliber 200g Sierra MatchKing at 1000 yards.
My second favorite is a .451 cal. 260g hardcast lead flatnose at 50 yds.

I agree that a lot of the Palin scoffs are unfair (though not all of them!), and there are a lot of cheap shots taken at her (although in this example she set herself up for cheap shots by foolishly re-using her infamous 'all of them' line). This is just the nature of partisan politics - it's bias, shaded lenses - it doesn't equate to loonyness. Conspiracy theories I would say, are a different matter - they are often outlandish and deny all the available evidence.
Is the view that Sarah Palin is an 'ignorant airhead' a conspiracy theory (or comparable to one)? Certainly the very idea of a VP candidate and popular political figure being an ignorant airhead is quite outlandish and unlikely... but in my subjective judgement the evidence points to just that. Certainly, she has given so many apparently clueless answers that such a conclusion can only be described as hasty/cynical (not loony) at worst.

Palin did name a Founding Father, something some of the folks mocking her in this thread seem to be unable to do. She also supplied information about Washington (his dislike for political service) that many folks don't know.
If Beck had asked her how a bill becomes law and she flubbed that, I'd say go ahead and scoff, but that didn't happen.

I'd love to hear her expound on his Christianity. ;)

. I’m not trying to “prove” anything, nor do I think I’m smarter than Palin. Those statements make the point for me. Period.

Gino: Excellent. Tho’ I’m not sure I would agree to your choice for me. But your basic statements are RIGHT on target! And I think the “best cartoon ever” is hysterically right on!

Thank you. You said it better than I.
This is just the nature of partisan politics - it's bias, shaded lenses - it doesn't equate to loonyness. Conspiracy theories I would say, are a different matter - they are often outlandish and deny all the available evidence.
Damn, Mike. I was going to cite Quayle, and you beat me to it!
