A made for tv movie from 1984. Shatner gets addicted to a hooker(Shepard).

Probably just a vehicle to show Cybil in Lingerie for two hours, but she does look sexy in it.

Never saw that one. Looks like it did have a full screen DVD release years ago, but it's long out of print.

Much like Selleck's other WWII era lost film, High Road to China.

Love High Road To China & Lassiter. Selleck never got the respect he deserved for those great movies. Some other favorites are:

Captains Of The Clouds - not generally considered one of Cagney's best, I love the movie because of the themes of courage and duty. Also the technicolor is brilliant.

The Mortal Storm - w/ Jimmy Stewart, Robert Young, Robert Stack, and a great supporting cast including the legendary Maria Ouspenskaya. Great anti-Nazi film that chronicles the early days of Hitler, and his impact on regular folk. Very powerful.

The Flamingo Kid - long-forgotten Matt Dillan movie that I never get tired of. With Richard Crenna, Hector Elizondo, and a great cast of young unknowns. Simple movie about coming of age in 1963 Brooklyn. For me, Matt Dillan never did better. And I can relate to the "beach club" scene of the 60's on Long Island.

Well, sorry but you've lost that bet.
John Cleese and Eric Idle, along with the other Python members, always pique my interest in any stuff they are in.

As for my own picks:

Jabberwocky
May be one that isn't too obscure but with Michael Palin in the lead and half the Python cast involved what's not to like. Very satirical that uses most of the fantasy cliches.

Ghost Story (1981)
Fred Astaire and Douglas Fairbanks Jr plus two others get together at a club to tell ghost stories but a pattern emerges about a gruesome secret they share. An intelligent movie with a great cast and good story.

Two Days In The Valley
A big cast of recognisable faces including Jeff Daniels, Teri Hatcher, James Spader, Charlize Theron and Glenne Headly to name some. But personally I think Danny Aiello steals the show.

And I could probably add Glengarry Glen Ross, Box Of Moon Light and Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead to the list as well.

Here are some, what I consider truly obscure classics.

Hoffman - Peter Sellers - a tad mysoginist, but an amazing performance.

Phantom Lady - A no star film noir with a classic drum solo scene.

Matewan - maybe not obscure enough, but truly the best film that many have never heard of.

See how I'm not hitting him, I think I've grown!

Mom and Dad save the world... another serious favorite... I have a Customer at work I make a mocha for every day - I call him Emperor Todd - HAIL TODD. He loves Jon Lovitz, so he just giggles.

I need that on e DVD, but I want the uncut one - all i ever see now is the shortened version. (I specifically remember a hot tub scene that was really funny, and it's always missing, so I wonder what else might have got cut?)

Your dead right about Matewan. It is a great story, has a solid cast and it is critically acclaimed. One of the best "westerns" I've seen in a long time - it's High Noon meets Hoffa.

Lassiter is good, but I nominate:

Going Places, with Gerard Depardieu, French with subtitles; most times you don't need the words the scenes speak for themselves.

Funny, poignant and sad all rolled into one movie. To top it off, the way it was shot it will not be dated at all. See it, if you can.

Also overlooked is "The Ice Harvest", with John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton.

And don't forget the classic "Night of the Comet". Or even "Eating Raoul".

You mean this car? (The paint job is different, but they used a Lola T70/3 with dummy turbine engines for the movie)

As for "LeMans", the big problem was that McQueen wanted it done HIS way, and the director disagreed. So the director quit. Or was fired. And McQueen got it his way.

Anybody else for Tim? I have long thought it is Mel Gibson's best acting. I think from about 1980.
I know people who consider A Boy and His Dog to be the only valid excuse for not removing Don Johnson from the world. I think it is the only film ever directed by L.Q. Jones.
I'd be remiss to not mention Mulholland Falls. My fave role from Bruce Dern.

"A Boy and His Dog"! I loved that movie!

Time has done it no favors, it would seem. A quick look on IMDB shows some horrendous covers for the DVD release, with blurbs like "Has to seen from the beginning!" and "Screenplay by Harlen Ellison" with "Liner notes by Robert Heincein". It looks like they picked the DVDs up from a Chinatown street vendor, or from the Ukraine.

I thought the movie deserved better treatment than that. :(

As far as race cars go though, I like THX1138.

The plot is the race itself. And the stars are the machines and the drivers nerve combined with tactics used in endurance racing. The film footage is a great example of camera placement.

Blake Edwards' S.O.B.

Not as successful as the Pink Panther series or "10", but brilliant none the less. It is famous for being the first movie to show Julie Andrews topless, but also Rosanna Arquette! It is also the great William Holden's last film! Last but not least, it is probably Robert Preston's best role, as physician to the stars, Dr. Finegarten.

Preston had the best lines:

Polly Reed: You're gonna let that SHYSTER on set?
Dr. Irving Finegarten: I could sue you for calling me that, Polly! A shyster is a disreputable lawyer. I'm a QUACK!

I love the original, can't stand the remake even with Hurley looking beautifully devilish.

Another very obscure one, also with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (although in lesser roles) is Richard Lester's "The Bed Sitting Room" from 1969. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064074/

It co-starred Sir Ralph Richardson, Rita Tushingham, Spike Milligan, Michael Hordern, Arthur Lowe, Marty Feldman (in his first film role) and Dandy Nichols as Mrs. Ethel Shroake, Queen of England several years after a nuclear war devastated the country.

It's not available on Region 1 DVD, don't think it ever has been, and if it ever came out on VHS I haven't been able to find information about it. I burned it to DVD-R a few years ago when it was on Turner Classic Movies. I've mentioned it on various forums over the past ten years and I think only two other people knew what I was talking about.

They did a lot of that with The Wire, too. They used real gang members for quite a few of the roles, and the guy who played the old deacon (Cutty's mentor) was said to have been the biggest heroin dealer in Bal'more at one time.

JongsStraw you are correct Sir, High Road to China. I remember that at the theater but it was Magnum. Sorry can't watch him unless he is in Hawaii. Years later late night on tv I said man what a very good movie. Chrisisall hasn't realized his age he is no longer old but ancient. Mid seventies movies are still gritty like the 7ups.

The Italians were not to be out done by the Japanese.

I remember seeing this film before they edited out some of the space battle for the video release. It hurts the film to have that battle scene chopped up. But Claude Rains hams it up. His outrageous character makes the whole film worth watching.

I wouldn't exactly call this a forgotten old movie, but it's great, is in my personal top 5 and it's the one I recommend to everyone who says Spielberg can't help his happy endings.

Edit: and so far, not even Haley Joel Osment tops Christian Bale at 12. Least annoying child actor ever.

As far as race cars go though, I like THX1138.

The plot is the race itself. And the stars are the machines and the drivers nerve combined with tactics used in endurance racing. The film footage is a great example of camera placement.

I've been obsessed with that movie since I was 8 years old.
When I found it on DVD, I wore out my tabletop player because I ran it on 'Loop' for about 2 weeks straight!
It's just the pure racing experience — no other movie has put me "in the action" like that one did.
Also, the minimized dialogue maximizes the re-watchability for me. Even the best dialogue gets tiresome after a while, but this is the only movie I know of that's so totally devoid of it. (Well, there's Koyaanisqatsi...)
