Ok, not sure how many of you remember Brachs Christmas Gloria Mix candy...

Now, I like the stuff, ok, like.. a LOT - which some find strange cause not many folk like it, but my greed for it can border on ridiculous since it's so rare, and during the holiday season if I can find it at all, I will buy EVERY box/bag a place has.
(and yes, that once went as far as a CASE of 24 bags, 1997 that was)

And while I didn't make a monty haul, I did score me a bowl full, yay!

Of course, it's all but empty now, but oooo yummy.

Typical day at work for me...

Directing traffic on a road that has about 12 cars a day... (Compared to some days where it's more like 12 cars a second)

But the view is nice (and damn cold too. 10 deg F with a 0 windchill)

Heh, yeah, the "Rome..." quote is one of my favourites, and terribly appropriate for my current company. I wanted to make a large plaque for the wall, but I couldn't immediately find copper sheets large enough. XD And the Picard one came from our very own, lovely MsA. Is one of my favourites, too. ^__^

The MP3 player isn't heavy at all. The wood is about a 1/16th inch thickness, and the brass is a thin gage around 0.040" or so. All in all, it's still lighter than my little cell phone. The mods to the headphones, on the other hand (if you got to those), were a bit too heavy for the earbuds, so I'm going to have to make a new pair. ((shrug))

S2cc: Nice array of objects, has depth.

s2aa: Clear, fills the space without a cluttered feel. O13 is prominent without being the main focus.

b6cc:Like the angles, like the floral object, reminds me of objects spilling out of a drawer.

b6aa: Like the composition, draws the eye in, 013 still prominent.

b4aa: Would be good for a smaller space (resolution).

I actually like them all, but those are my favorites. While I do like the stamped 013, I think it gets lost and the cutout shows off your skills a little more. I like the offset 013s better than the front-and-center ones because it draws your eye across the space and makes you look at the other objects.

(Haha objects in space.. ha. I'll go dork out somewhere else now.)

As for pricing.. well, recoup the cost of materials, the amount of time you put in at a relatively reasonable hourly rate, and double it for markup/profit margin?
(This is why art is expensive... it takes a lot of time by a skilled person. Just about anybody can operate a button on a plastic model assembly line.)

The more talented you are and the harder it is to do, the more you can and should charge.

I personally *want* eleventy billion dollars an hour for my work. I do not, however, haz teh mad skillz. I would not accept minimum wage rates, because it's a lot harder than things I've done that I was willing to accept minimum wage to do, (even the coffee shop paid a little better than that).

You could snoop around and see what other artists who are doing a similar level of complexity in their work are charging and try to figure out how much of what they charge was for materials, and how much was for them.

Or you could ask artists, jewelers, and other people doing things which are not completely unsimilar to your work "so, how do you figure out what to charge for a piece?", they will probably be willing to talk.

The trick is to not charge so much that nobody wants to buy the stuff.

Your things are works of art. They are one-of a kind items which probably cannot be reproduced, or at least not in large quantities. We will not find them at Claire's Boutique next to the plastic tiaras. We will not even find them at a chain fine jewelry store. If you were able to just put some metal into a jig and bend it around and "poof" a little while later you had another one just like the first one, you'd probably be able to charge less for them. It's like a drawing vs. a print. I can get a print of someone's work, but to purchase the work I'd have to pay a lot more.

Jump in if I'm completely off base here, folks...

I'm seeing a friend today who makes dolls. Glorious angels (more like elemental spirits really) that take your breath away or make you want to cry or take them home, not nursery playthings. I'll try to remember to ask her about it.
(I'll be busy discussing eco-politics and organic lettuce-raising/gopher repelling strategies, and eating lots of nommy foods. It's the annual potluck seed order for our NOFA chapter. The root vegetables tend to absorb my attention, and discussion of tomato pollination for improved germination rates is absorbing stuff if you're of the right mindset.)

Some pretty stuffs on display there HK, as for my thoughts on the banners...

I like the very first one, s2dd. More so than the one below it though I can't quite put my finger on why. They're almost the same image.

s2bb I do not like. It's still pretty stuffs and all, but having the 013 over on the right hand side does not work for me. Not at all. I think it looks better over on the left, and definitely no further right than center.

b6cc is probably my very favourite of the bunch though. I'd choose that. b6aa comes a close second. I could have just said that up front, but I thought you might want a lil more feedback on others too.

As for price... I have no idea. If you enjoy making the items and aren't too bothered to see them leave your possession when you're finished, maybe you could start pricing fairly low, enough to make back cost of materials and gain a lil profit, then creep them up a bit and see how people react? When folks are saying "OMFG!!11! No wai!" then you went too far.

s2aa is probably my favorite layout, I like the off-center 013 and the other elements. b6cc is another favorite; it has a lot of variation of color in the objects and the layout has rhythm. I also like b6aa a lot, though I'm not sure the 013 is quite visible enough; it's almost going off the page. To me, that creates some visual interest, but that kind of thing can be very hit-or-miss with different people.

I don't know what the going rate is for metal-worker artisans, but I would say your skillz are worth not much less than $20 an hour, possibly a good deal more.

I vote for b6cc. And wow. And how.

How much to charge... well, being an engineer and all, you could come up with a number, but you may not like the result if you work it back to dollars per hour! Could be a scary prospect, given a throw-away society and China.

I think the upshot is to know how much material cost there is, how long it takes, and what the market will bear; versus how much you need to make, free and clear of all other costs.

A friend of mine makes custom leather sight hound martingale collars. When he started out, he took a W.A.G. at pricing *snort*. He hung it up at one point citing that he had no time and made no money. We talked about it a bit, and made a list of costs (time and money). We both came up with things the other did not think of. Then we pulled out a calculator. It came to light that he was making negative dollars per hour! No wonder they sold so well, eh? He's back into it now. Sales are way down, but "profits" are up!

P.S. I might have some customers for you.

I spoke with my friend. She said it's a perennial bitch to figure out prices.

Turns out she makes about $5 an hour when all's said and done, but if she asks for more people think it's overpriced. She says people seem to think 50 cents an hour is fair wages.

She said Etsy was good, and suggested you check out Scuttlebutt (online) and a magazine for artists I've completely forgotten the name of but I think it had the word "calendar" in it.

HK: Me, I like S2BB the best. It shows off the most of your objects, skills, and styles, it seems, while keeping your trademark (013) small and subtle, almost an inside joke as it were.

Also, B6CC has a wonderful graphical layout, the way everything seems to have the same lean angle in that one.

By the way, calling your online store Warehouse 013 might be a perfect fit, since that show (Warehouse 13) has a steampunk-y feel to it. But you might not want yourself associated with it; I don't know.

Anyway, once you put stuff up and start selling, let us know. I love your work. It's beautiful stuff, and I love the rugged hand-made look of it. Wish I could afford to contract you to do me a cover for my iPod...

When it comes to commissions for tech mods, though, I really don't think it's possible for me to make anything for something that I don't actually own. For my MP3 player, I used it every step of the way for measuring and fitting. That's the only good way of making sure all the access ports are accessible and the screen isn't partially covered.... I have been thinking about picking up broken tech, though, so I could at least have templates available if someone should ask for them. A bunch of my friends want me to start making iPhone cases, so I may end up doing that sooner rather than later. ((shrug))...

As for your banners.. I like the basic layout of b6aa (especially that style 13). But I'd prefer to see the piece on the far right of b6bb and b6cc, between the 13 and watch, maybe leaning on the watch and flashdrive. Then in place of what is on the far right, replace it with the round brass/cooper Kanji (partly because it would balance the coloring on both sides, and partly because I really like those pieces).

But the reality is that any of those would work well as a banner... My problem is that you have so many really nice pieces, I'd like to find a way to get them all in the shot (which then stops being a banner, and becomes wallpaper

)..

Been a while, here's my addition to the thread. I can't remember if I posted this here, but here's my second attempt at a fauxhawk. Finally worked after I got all my hair cut off.

I'm hoping I can pull it off to go with the costume I'm designing for D*C. That's if I can lose enough weight by then... I'm gettin' there!

Another cold day at work.

Back woods of Barton Vermont overlooking Crystal Lake (out of frame) About 5 degrees F with a -10 Windchill. View is nice though...

And the general store in the next town over (Glover) has every thing... Including a stuffed Black Bear and Moose.

And not just the moose head but the whole dang thing!!!!

Funnily enough, they are mine too! (though I have to admit that every time I visit my man in Boston, I fall a little more in love with that artisticly varied & historically rich city as well!

She has to be one of the most fine-boned people I've ever seen. I knew she was all willowy and graceful, but as always it's kind of incredible to experience in person.

Would someone tell Mother Nature that the calender says it's nearly May....

This was my (Blurry) commute to work yesterday...

And the drive home three hours later because the Phone crews don't work in this stuff so they don't need traffic control.

I've worked a whopping 13 hours so far this week in three days, the weather has been so crappy. I'm off today and tomorrow I am scheduled to work and the forecast is for sunny and 60. If I'm lucky, I might get 20 hours this week.

MSA - Johnny looks good sittin' up all on his little lonesome! Maddox still has the round-bottom thing going on, but he's finally rolling himself over on his own, and getting less vocal when he's on his belleh.

Here's a newer pic - Maddox is really diggin' carrots and sweet taters!

And he's trying to bypass the whole crawling thing by practicing his standing skills...
