I usually get about halfway down the stairs in a panic over being late for work, then realize that it's the weekend. It takes a few weeks to acclimate to waking up in daylight at the end of winter...

I did that a lot in middle/high school.

Have to admit it's nice to wake up and not be in the dark though. Same thing when you get home after work/school. The most depressing thing about winter is getting home at 4:30 and it being dark already

And children are not allowed to grow up! I forbid it, as do all parents I bet. I drive Sir Daughter the Brave nuts all the time with that train of thought.

Every time we get out of the car in the parking lot I make her take my hand until we are on the sidewalk. She hates it. The other day she was being her normally pouty self when I made her do this. I looked at her, smiled and told her to get used to this cuz as far as I am concerned she will still be holding my hand in parking lots until she is 40. Of course she gave me one of these looks

Boo! Hi all! Just popped in for my usual! (Looks at Kelkhil to see if he remembers what that is after all this time...?)

By the way - I always say to kids, "the thing about car parks is that cars are also driven in them, and usually by people who are busier looking for an empty space to park their car, than looking for little people! You hold my hand & we are extra careful!!" It always amazes me how folk just walk behind reversing cars, or let their kids run ahead to the car as if they were in a school yard!

Long weeks, managed to bring out my bug finally but charity run on Sunday, only went back to work.

Children growing up is scary, my nephew and niece are getting bigger at an alarming rate!

Never mind car parks, it's the parents who put their push chairs into the road ahead of them when crossing that scares me!

Boychild's finishing his science fair project (because Doctroid was out of town for two weeks and mommy hadn't a clue how it had been planned, how to execute it, or a reliable memory)

The surgeon canceled the biopsy (or as boychild called it "eyeopsy") again, this time two hours before my appointment. There was another emergency surgery apparently.

Hey all,

how we all doing? Did someone mention ice cream?

Man I'm beat, my IBS is letting me know I'm doing too much, or something else is wrong, gonna see the doc next week when they finally stop effing around with my appointment.

Promise I'm not trying to incure the wrath of MsA but I shut down for the day at about 17:45 and honestly dozed off in my chair, just not enough sleep in the world.

Any plans for the weekend? I have my ma's sixtieth celebrations over Sat & Sun, an assignment due next week and my sis' b'day on Friday. Have to get the assignment ready to post Tues and then off to Wrexham for two days. Going to need a holdiay to recover from my long weekend and shortened work week!

The good news... Castle has made it to these shores, starts next week so yay! Might make up for me missing the whole of season 2 Dollhouse a little.

Also, how exciting is the LHC! Over 7 TeV reactions and already seen pictures although the computer graphics could have been put together by any competent graphic designed but I'm very excited in a particle smashing together way!

Castle good!

There's a Firefly reference this week.

I made it into the oculomaxillary surgeon's office today. Then 20 minutes later I was walking back out because my eyelid was looking so much better he didn't want to biopsy it unless it's not improved in two weeks. This time I was given something to put on/in it on a "can't hurt" basis.
I kind of like his philosophy. He basically stated that because it was so spread out right now my body was the best doctor, if it turns into a localized lump then he's the best doctor.

I was OK with not getting cut into today, really. It was just a little anticlimactic and we might have to go through it anyway in two weeks. (sigh)

A friend of mine who is in nursing school got hit by a truck in front of the hospital last week. She's OK. I told her you're not allowed to mess up your knees until AFTER you pass the Boards.

She's in a pretty good mood even though it looks like she won't be able to graduate with her class this semester. She's bummed about it, but she knows it will still happen.

Hope you're feeling better soon Gee.

My doc is back tomorrow and will be making up for lost time today, so I'm thinking we won't get out until about 7pm. I need to kick in the afterburners tomorrow. Which means I need to recharge tonight.

Ima go sleep now. Sooo sleeepyyy.

Alright, NOW I'm depressed. Again.

Ever have one of those days? Where you're mostly just staring at the screen, trying to decide which game to play? (Unemployed) I have the Baldur's Gates, NWN (ugh), the Icewind Dales, and even freakin' Space Rangers 2(I heart SR2)! Yet I want something else.

Is there a program out there, that'll let me:

Build my own single player Runescape-esque/Baldur's Gate 3 RPG? Where I can design/import all the terrain, buildings, objects, vehicles (I want drivable sailing ships, wagons, AND airships), creatures, and gizmos I want? With the ease of use of Inventor or Revit?

And then glue it all together without having to know a gorramn line of code? That will run on a PIII 450???

Didn't think so.

Well, that's some of my problems, Barkeep.

Vehicle trouble stinks.

I remember when my compression coil (alternator) stopped working, like it was yesterday (or 4 years ago, couple days before the New Year)....

I was working at a small engine factory 50mi from home. The 8hr shift ended about 10:30 at night. Now, on the way to work I HAD noticed the battery charge light was on, but didn't think anything of it.

Anyways, on the trip home, about halfway, the Red Raven (that's her name) starts slowing down. But the speed-O-meter says I'm doing 60mph and rising!

Well, I coasted a ways and pulled over near a highway dept. place. Couldn't start it. Started worrying. Didn't want to hitch hike, but wanted to knock on peoples houses even less. If I was going to hitch hike, I didn't want to do the thumb signal, 'cause who's gonna see a thumb at night? So, I decided to wave, but like a giddy wimp just to show I was in no way a threat, and so the driver would have to proof their toughness by actually picking me up. Didn't work for the first few vehicles, but eventually I flagged down a delivery van.

Turns out my house was only about 20mi out of the way in his 200+mi loop. He made a delivery on the way, but didn't take that long. He also offered me some hot candy. I accepted, but only ate one before realizing I didn't have water. HOT!!!(ok, I think I did have water, but I wasn't going to open my bag in front ot the dude)

When the journey was over he didn't charge me, but I did recommend the movie Serenity!

Weather is starting to improve here in Blighty, finally.

And - joy. It's mouse season. Last night, I was just going to bed when I heard that...Special Yowling.

After quarter of a hour's fruitless pursuit, I gave up and went to bed. So this morning, picture one 'AnJL picking up every single shoe at arms length and shaking it nervously...

mmmmm mice. We had mice in our old house, but we didn't have cats, so all we heard was the scrabbling and gnawing in the ceilings and walls. :P At least the cats take care of the mice though, right? I've learned traps don't always work, lol.

Um... about the hens...

They fed foxes, weasels, a very fat red tailed hawk, and basically everything around but us last fall.

No chickens, no eggs.

Poor poor chickies.

I'm probably taking a year or two off from the henhouse to strategify on recreating the poultry gulag from Chicken Run (sans dogs), but with a protective lid on it somehow...(NONE SHALL PASS!).

The weather has been pretty good here too. About two weeks ago it was snowing, since then it's been sunshine and warmth just about every day. I didn't get nearly enough college work done, but it's my easter break, I was busy with chocolate and sleeping all day. I think Ican be excused this time.

Shuffled off to Buffalo! Just got back from a whirlwind birthday trip. G'ma is 92!

Mom flew in from Seattle for it, and she'll be in town this week plus the weekend. Yayz!!

Boychild got sick an hour outside of town on the way there ("I feel tingly all over"), then was better by this morning. It was a hit-hard-n-fast fever with teeth chattering chills. No other symptoms.
Weird.

Back to work tomorrow.

Hey MsA,

happy maths indeed, with out wanting to seem like a big head, I've just followed up my first assignment score of 96% with a 95% in the second.

Now if only I wasn't so damn behind but hey ho, turns out that the two weeks I'm behind is pretty much all matrices, which I did in great deal last year on the pure maths course so I may just make this one.

The better news, is that it appears that the new nasal spray for my allergies had drastically improved the quality of my night's sleep and so I've gone from being some kind of zombified, grumpy miserable git to feeling relatively human. Just need to catch up on five weeks worth of rotten sleep!

I've been off in a world of steampunk and gaslamp fantasy, and general crazed scribbling. It may turn out to be a Proper Book.

Still fanficcing elsewhere - I don't get paid except in compliments, as yet, but it sure as hell beats working in a cubicle. Or with cheese.

Just pre-ordered my UK copy of 'Reclaiming the Blade' and am horribly over-excited. Have perpetrated 'coatish weirdness and dragged a couple more folk into the 'verse, so am well pleased with that, too.

Coming back to this fandom is like coming home.

Hey all,

Long days but productive, I seem to have suddenly developed importance at work and am getting dragged into meetings and asked for my opinion, which nice but not helping me get things done!

Slowly catching up with maths so think I might make the next deadline (I can probably get it stretched if I ask nicely)

I've actually got back to some writing myself Anjil, I have the longest drawn out writing of Vampire novel going, which I just want to finish so I can start fiddling with it, written in three sections but only finsihed first two sections and the second needs a heavy re-write! Also awaiting the results of writing comp I entered, not got my hopes up too much or anything but would be nice to know if I made the short list or not and won't know till the end of May and I'm shite at waiting!

Anyway, must crack on, want to get a few words out before bed time

Hey MsA - Working on the sums...not vast, but this year, I aim to get an agent. And something actually finished. One of the ideas I had for an FF fic might actually transpose nicely to a proper book.

FLT - doesn't it look like fun? I'm going through a bad sword obsession at the moment, and writing something with LARP in it as an excuse.

*waves to Gee* I like classic fang-fic, myself, I just worry about this bit-chick-lit everywhere. An awful lot of Sue-age abounds, especially in the published stuff. Love the steampunk stuff - someone has nicked my copy of 'The Difference Engine', I've just discovered.

edit: was that the CWA Dagger you entered? I missed the deadline this year. But I was looking at the Waterstones thing.

Yay for promotion for barkeep, sadly extra work and less social time is just leading to extra work for me, even if I am all of a sudden having meetings with very important people all of a sudden who want to ask for my opinion (I'd like the jammy dodger please!)

As to your question Anjl, good grief no! The CWA Dagger is for published books, at least that's what I believe and sadly my poor little novel still hasn't made it through first draft yet alone be in a fit state to show people other than good friends. I entered the Bristol short story prize, and thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace in writing style and it was nice to finish something again!

As for Vampire books, read a lot, mostly avoided the bit-chick-lit although you have to dip your toe for context, or at least you do if yours is set relatively in the real world. Read a few Anne Rice and forcing myself into some Twiglight so I can be balanced in my reference (it's just too popular to ignore completely - would be wrong) but some of the Somatov and others have been really good and I always adored Dracula. I'll stop now, I'm far from being an expert but have read/watched more than most.

I read through a copy of Stoker's original version. (Special collections at the college library, I was researching for a class project.)
They shot him at the end.
With a regular gun and bullets.
Seriously.

(Okay my eyes were blurring, but I'm pretty sure that's what I read.)

I did not enjoy the read.
I also hated Frankenstein. That was the first time I ever threw a book across the room when I finished it for wasting my time.

I liked Anne Rice better. She pulled you in and you could almost feel the scenery.

Related geographically but not dentally: I read "Yellow Fever" (I think that's the title), set in contemporary New Orleans, heroine is a doctor who is a direct descendant of Marie (Levesque? I am having sooo much trouble with names tonight..), and involves voodoo. It's a good read. A little gritty, a little scary, goes down smooth and fast. I can't remember the author's name, but she's good and it's a series.

Oh, I finally got my "eyeopsy" done. (Biopsy of the eyelid. Boychild quietly listened to me talking about my eye problem to adults and he heard it as "eyeopsy", kids are cute.)

Explaining the bruising:
Mom's suggestion was "bar fight".
Mine was "he missed" (with gesture).

Doctroid offered to wear a cheap tshirt with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve if I wanted to go out in public with him so I wouldn't have to explain. (If you're going to get the looks you might as well give 'em a show!) That ensemble is about as "him" as a bicycle wearing a trout in a tutu, in case you were wondering. Or a pig in a jumpsuit and logging chaps. You get the idea.
Not that he doesn't wear Tshirts, but they've usually got humorous physics jokes on them.

All in all I think I might have preferred the bar fight. I'm in the right place.
(Looks around for a likely cohort with whom to incite mayhem.)

Marie Laveau is the Voodoo Queen. Not a Rice fan myself, prefer Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. I thought Lukyanenko had a nice modern twist to the genre. (I'm one of those dreadful people who has actually read all the 'classic' novels, and found most of them turgid. I have to really be in the mood to tackle Dickens or Austen for pleasure, too.)

Gee - Debut Dagger is the one for the unpublished folk, but it is crime/thriller. Hope you have some luck.

You probably have a fencing group near you, if only your local SCA gang of likeable crazies. That's where I'm learning. (swish, swish..poke.)Be warned,this also generates bruises. Not as many or as spectacular as the ones on the people who wear armor and swing rattan swords at each other, but bruises nonetheless. Fun though!

So we're going fishing today, which is Mom's last half day in town. I have to go schmeer some cream cheese on bagels and pound my coffee.
Then when we get back I've got some bushes that need to get stuck in the ground and looked at sternly, told to grow, and patted on the head.

I finished the book before midnight. It was not a heavy read. I am apparently more forgiving or less discerning in my reading appreciation, as I thought I had definitely slogged through much worse.

Sparkle in sunshine? Seriously? They're mixing Faerie Glamour with fangs, fine, but literally scintillating? What do they do when the clouds unexpctedly break?
By the end of it I wanted to smack him and say "just bite her already". I have a feeling I'd have been happier if she'd gotten the ending she was looking for and it had just been one book. Sort of cut out the middle five or so because I can see where this is headed eventually.

Oh well. It's a study in obsession and codependence blah blah blah.

I'd thought for some reason before starting the book that she was 15 or something, but she just acts like it when it's convenient to the plot. It must have been all the Romeo and Juliet references people were tossing around near it.

lol - SR, it gets worse, trust me working through the series suddenly feeling better about my meagre writing talents, not that I wish to knock her for her success, I don't begrudge anyone their money and life but it is not good.

I actually feel a little less grumpy about the sparkling having read it as the initial description put in me mind of ageing and transforming process of Anne Rice's vampires.

A Vampire recommendation in case you missed, might be old hat to you lot but if you get a chance, check out Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist, I'd go with the film first and then read the book. Really good, film was one of the best released last year, truly beautiful and full of Scandanavian mellancollie.
