Wife and I saw our 21 wk ultrasound today and it's definitely a boy! (We have a 3-yr-old girl already). Of course either would have been fine but we were hoping for a matching set :)

So does anyone really think the name "Jayne" would fly for a boy? (Johnny Cash's theory of child-toughening notwithstanding.)

I'd suggest making Jayne a middle name, for your son's sake 8 or 10 years down the road. My ex wanted to name our son "Dante", but that would have made his name "Dante Blosser", a little too close to "Dainty Blossom" for my comfort (Blossom was one of my non-favorite nicknames is primary school - kids can be so cruel!) So his name is Cameron Dante, a decent compromise.

Perfect name here: I think you should name him Joshua Malcom. Call him Joss for short. Covers all your important bases--he'll be named after a god and a gentleman. And, indirectly, me of course.

As a parent of a matching set myself, all I can say is I think Jayne is a great name. But, perhaps short for something else. I mean, my last name is Barks. Believe me, kids are the rudest, crudest, cruelest bastards on the face of the planet!

I'm going with the common thought here.

"Jayne" is actually a boy's name if you're talking Celtic here. Back home in Limerick, I actually have a cousin named Jayne and noone gives it a second thought.

However in the good ol' U.S. of A., I'd stick with Jayne as a middle name.

Perhaps. . ."Christopher" as a first name?

That's my name, obviously. The only problem I see with it is that there are so myn of us named Chris.

In school there always seemed to be three of us to a class, and the teacher would ask Chris to answer a quection. It always took a minute for us to figure out which one.

Congrats!! That's awesome to want to name him Jayne! I've heard some pretty odd names that came from tv shows (one of my good friends went to school with a kid named SodaPop) I like the idea of Jousha Malcom too.

i say name him jayne if you want to. and teach him how to stand up for his name when the time comes. everyone is right, kids can be cruel so chances are no matter what you name him you'll have some issue to cover.
i let everyone talk me out of the name i wanted for my daughter, jamie janay. so i ended up naming her jessica which ended up being the most popular girls name that year. there were issues. every reference to jessica in school was followed by a last name coz there were so many.
but when i tell her how i came up with jessica (because soap was a popular tv show and i loved the flaky character jessica) she thinks that's pretty funny.
i think kids think it's cool when their name is a little different.

I named my kids (girl and boy) after Han Solo and Princess Leias twins Jaina and Jacen. They shouldnt cop too much flak I hope..

... I remember reading in a magazine years ago about a family that agonised over their daughter's name because they didn't want something that would be tease-able or be able to be made into a nickname.

They settled on "Amber".

So the 2-year old brother finally gets to meet his newborn sister, and welcomes her with "Hello, Amburger!"

... an old rule is that when attempting to design something to be foolproof is to remember always that fools are always much more clever than you realise. (And this goes double for the 'innocence' of children and namecalling!)

I agree. Name him what you want. My parents tried to give me a name no one could make bad nicknames from. Not only did they fail but now that I am past the age where children make fun of your name, I am left with the most unoriganal name in the world.

For those who suggested naming him Christopher... I have a son named Christopher, just turned 5 last weekend. He was named after Christoper Pike from Star Trek. My oldest is Jean-Luc, and the middle son is Anton Kirk. If I'd had them all within the last two years, they'd be Mal, Simon, and Jayne.

Little Christopher wishes his name was Jayne - wants me to call him Jayne all the time. He's got at least 4 friends named Christopher.

I say, name your son Jayne! There's plenty of guys with names that have traditionally been girls names, like Kim and Lynn. They've gotten through it ok, and so will your son. And, he'll have a really cool story to tell when folks wonder about his name.

I think you should name your son Jayne. Because kids will fun of whatever name you pick! They will grow out of it and then your son will have a very unique name. I love having a name that not many kids around my age have. And so will your son. And if you do decide to have Jayne as a middle name I think it would be cute to have Adam as his first. So it would be Adam Jayne. Any ways Congrats!!!!

First off:

Congrats! My wife and I just had our first, a girl 2 weeks ago today.

Secondly:

Name your kid anything you want. We agonized, debated, etc. We ended up with Kylie Taylor.
It evolved out a last name of a soccer player in England with Charlton Athletic. We almost named her Kaylee but we compromised with her current name.

Anyway, good luck you have plenty of time to decide. My 2 cents ------------- go with Jayne Christoph. Or something like that. You can always call him JC growing up!!!

Thank you for all the suggestions. We're about 2 months from the due date.

I'm currently rooting for Forrest (it's a family name and I really like the sound of it). My wife suggested George Bailey Knife. I really like the sentiment behind that, and George is also a family name, but...not sure I want to call him George. We both love It's a Wonderful Life, though.

She really likes Jonah but I don't care for it (no offense to any Jonahs).

My kids are Alec, Tristan, and Willow. The first two were never teased about their names, and little Willow is only 7 months old so a bit early to tell for her.

As for names, heck all names sound cool for a while and then trite aswell. It's really difficult.

I think if I had kids I give them different names as the years go by. I just couldn't decide.

Might start off with something cute like Jake or Moonbeam or something and then later on when they become annoying teenagers, things like Scar or Wire or Abrasive.
"Hey Abrasive, go clean your room!"

...Then as they start to mellow give them the heroic name they deserve.....

....Like Jason or Andromeda.

Congratulations JCKnife on your second child!

If I were you I would give some serious thought about his name. My first is Randolph, and from that it is an easy jump to Rudolph. But kids are inventive little buggers so just about any name you give him will get him some trouble unless its John. On the other hand most people remember my name fairly easily because it's not a very common one. Choose wisely.

Congratulations on the little one. I've got 3 myself (2 boys, 1 girl) and love being a mom.

As for names? just pick what you like. I did, and then had someone ask what my fascination with saint names? (Christopher, Marie, Nicklaus). Didn't do it on purpose, just happened that way.

As for getting picked on in school, try growing up with the last name of Cooch. (Not kidding, that was my maiden name) Talk about really NOT funny.......
