All 26 films from the Zatoichi film series. Transcendent. An amazing find, wikipedia description:

"Zatoichi (座頭市 Zatōichi) is a fictional character featured in one of Japan's longest running series of films and a television series set in the Edo period. The character, a blind masseur and swordmaster, was created by novelist Kan Shimozawa (子母澤寛, Shimozawa Kan). This originally minor character was developed for the screen by Daiei Studios and actor Shintaro Katsu, who created the screen version. A total of 26 films were made from 1962 to 1989. From 1972 to 1974, a television series of the same name was made. One hundred twelve episodes were aired before the "Zatoichi" tv series was cancelled.
Film number 17 of the original series was remade in America in 1990 (by TriStar Pictures) as Blind Fury, an action movie starring Rutger Hauer.
More recently, Takeshi Kitano directed and starred in a 2003 Zatoichi movie. Sho Aikawa also starred in a stage version of Zatoichi, directed by Takashi Miike."

The film released in 2003 was a big disappointment (oh the horror) to fans of the first 26... whaddya gonna do, we got 26. If you have an ounce of interest in Asian cinema, you should check out the first few.

Downfall-German film about the fall of Hitler.The best acting job of portraying Hitler ever.It's on netflix.Sub-titled.
Blood Simple-early Cohen brothers film that no one ever watches but should.
I also really agree with Bottle Rocket,that movie is a favorite of mine.

Freaked - laughed til my gut hurt for days.

A Little Princess - 1990'2 version, starring Liesel Matthews.

Suspect Zero - not gret production, but amazing this subject matter made it to mainstream wide release. Very good treatment of the subject, for those into it. Plus cast of Ben Kingsley, Carrie Anne-Moss, Arron Eckhart and more. Some of the material may be of interest to browncoats focusing on River abilities. (yeah, I'm not telling what the topic is.)

Hero (early 90's) - had assumed more had seen it, but keep finding out that's not the case. Favorite Chevy Chase film (he's not credited) and Susie Cusack film, and one of my fave Dustin Hoffman films, Geena Davis films, Tom Arnold films, kevin O'Connor films, Andy Garcia films, and nice turn by Fisher Stevens. Very sarcastic and cynical type humor.

City of Lost Children - that year I was doing "best of" movie polling, and every single person who did not have it on their list I asked if they saw it, and none of them had. Everybody who had seen it had it on their top 10.

Bedazzled - the original from 1967 with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, not the crappy Brendan Fraser remake.

Days of Heaven - Terrence Malick's second film, with Richard Gere, Brooke Adams and Sam Shepard.

The Duellists - directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine.

The Fisher King - Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams in a Terry Gilliam film.

Four Friends - Directed by Arthur Penn. No stars anyone would recognize, but great acting and great story. If you came of age in the '60s (or are interested in that era) this one should speak to you.

Hammett - Frederic Forrest plays Dashiell Hammett and Peter Boyle is Jimmy Ryan, the "Continental Op" who inspired several of his stories. Directed by Wim Wenders.

Heavenly Creatures - Peter Jackson's best film (and yes, I also love LotR).

The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Daniel Day Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche in one of the most thoughtful, romantic films ever. The type of film you think it is going to be will change several times throughout the movie, but it is basically about love, honor, courage and loyalty. Directed by Philip Kaufman.

Waking Life - directed by Richard Linklater, in the rotoscopic-animation technique he also used for A Scanner Darkly. This one's all about the dream state...or is it?

Walkabout - directed by Nicholas Roeg, starring Jenny Agutter. She and her young brother are stranded in the Australian outback, and are "rescued" by an aborigine boy on his coming-of-age walkabout ritual.

Start The Revolution Without Me, 1970. Very young Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland. The movie holds up surprisingly well for being nearly 40 years old, and the humor is timeless.

Fandango. I always refer to this one as chick flick for dudes. It's not a comedy nor is it a buddy picture but it has elements of both. The only recognizable cast members are Judd Nelson and Kevin Costner.

The story centers on five friends who have just graduated college and are facing the reality of adult responsibilities. Set in the Vietnam era, two of the "groovers" receive notice that they have been drafted into the military. This becomes the catalyst for a last hurrah road trip. There is some great scenery, outstanding dialogue and more than a few misadventures. I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

Nice pick Singate. Great film, a bit sad near the end though.
I think there is a strong message buried in Fandango. You only live once. Make each moment count.
Like I said, great film.

Nobody's Fool - subtle and touching, Jessica Tandy and Paul Newman show their class.

The Fastest Gun Alive - 'small' western that hits the mark; Glenn Ford's performance near sublime perfection.

Talk of the Town - Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman have a ball with a sparkling script, under the deft direction of George Stevens.

For folk who like Walkabout , there's an obscure film , also from Oz , called We Of The Never Never , that is definitely a classic...Much of what I consider quintessentially Australian is in this film...

Oddly , since seeing Australia a few days ago , I've been thinking of old and lovable films...

Brainstorm--Natalie Wood's last movie , a sci-fi with Chris Walken

Until The End Of The World--with William Hurt , it's a sci-fi with Max Von Sydow , and a U2 song of the same name in the soundtrack...Very cerebral , very interesting film...

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind--Speaking in a strictly technical sense , it IS brain damage...Plus , it was apparently a bit of inspiration for Joss and Eliza's DOLLHOUSE. Kirsten Dunst jumping on the bed in her undies...What's not to like ?

Slipstream--Probably one of the few films ever made in Cappadocia...Plus , Mark Hamill , lots of weirdness , and odd flying machines...

Map Of The Human Heart--Unusual film about an Inuk who goes to WW2 England , and his adventures in love...

Never Cry Wolf--From a Farley Mowat story , an epic tale of a naturalist taken into the Canadian Arctic and abandoned to a project to study the wolves...Plus , his interactions with the native peoples and their environment...

The Dish--About the folk who manned the Australian dish antenna that received downlinked video from the lunar surface during the Apollo 11 flight...

The Earthling--William Holden's last film , about an old man who has gone to the Australian outback to die , but an orphaned kid (Ricky Schroder) kind of gets in the way of his plan...

Last Of The Dogmen--Barbara Hershey , Tom Berenger...Seems that Hershey is some kind of cultural anthropologist , and she and Berenger discover a remote mountain valley where a Native American group live as they always did...

I had no idea of that,I need to track down a vhs copy now,because I'm a fan of that film.You also mentioned Miller's Crossing in another post and that is my favorite Cohen brothers film.You will find no better dialogue in film.

I would like to submit the following in no particular order....

The Minus Man - a very good Owen Wilson as a serial killer with Cheryl Crow, Janene Garofalo, Dwight Yoakom. etc.

Going Places (I might have mentioned it in another thread) - a French film with Gerard Depardieu. Very poignant film that is part comedy part drama and all good. Deals with 2 drifters in south France (1972) and their misadventures with women.

Days of Heaven - someone had this movie on their list and I thought that was a good choice so I'm including it on my list. A very good story.

Here’s one of my all time favorites. I don’t know if it qualifies as an unknown though. I think maybe quite a few people have seen it years ago.

The old black and white movie “ Dr. Strangelove”

Peter Sellers owned that movie. Incredibly acted by him. Plus we got a great performance by George C. Scott and I really enjoyed Slim Pickens as Maj. Kong. I still laugh my a** off every time I watch it.

Liquid Sky - a movie about a punk girl model/actress heroine addict in NYC that attracts an alien being who feeds off her sexual energy. Very stylish and strange.

Modern Romance - a comedy with Albert Brooks, about romance & relationships. I think it's his funniest work.

Local Hero - Moving & funny story of a cocky Texas oilman who goes to Scotland and ends up learning what's important in life.

Millenium- Time travellers from the future on a mission to rescue people from airplanes about to crash. Interesting story, and the time travel aspect is well done.

"What's the rumpus?" Miller's Crossing, agree best Cohen Bros. film so far.

Added 2 adventure films, Black Robe: In the 17th century a Jesuit priest and a young companion are escorted through the wilderness of Quebec... very real feeling.

and Mountains of the Moon: The story of Captain Richard Francis Burton's and Lt. John Hanning Speke's expedition to find the source of the Nile. Lighter than BR.

Neighbors (1981) John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Cathy Moriarty, Kathryn Walker, dir. John Avildsen - widely misunderstood...panned by critics and at the box office...possibly one of the Top 5 (certainly Top 10) funniest movies I've ever seen.

Scenes From the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills (1989) Jacqueline Bisset, Ed Begley Jr., Ray Sharkey, Robert Beltran, dir. Paul Bartel - don't know how it did with the critics or the box office, but it did REAL WELL with me.

Smoke Signals. Combines comedic moments with a very powerful drama in the manner to which we Browncoats have become accustomed. Might be a bit too much if you recently lost your father, especially if you thought you could have been closer, but then again it can be be very uplifting in the same circumstances.

Only a few people know about, huh?

Try "The Rains Came" starring Myrna Loy. A black and white movie with a strong message, a realistic ending, and some AMAZING stunt work (for the day).

Or, "The Hard Way" starring Lee Van Cleef and Patrick McGoohan. He's not a super assassin, but just a good sniper who wants to quit his line of work. Simple, and counter-genre.

It's been mentioned here before, but "The Sorcerer". A story about a truck taking a trip through South America. Good stuff!

Lastly, although it's not nearly as obscure, "The General" starring Buster Keaton. His best movie.

I'll add a couple...

"Creator" - Peter O'Toole, Vincent Spano, Virginia Madsen, Mariel Hemingway (don't let her scare you off - she's actually utilized very well in this one!), the guy who played Charles Emerson Winchester in MASH... It's funny, it's science, it's romantic, it's happy, it's sad, it's O'Toole possibly at his best ever. It's one of my very favorite films.

"Somewhere In Time" - Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour. Amazingly touching story of love and time travel.

"In Bruges" - this one is actually from this year, but no one seems to have noticed it at all. Simply FANTASTIC. Any movie that features live reenactments of Heironymous Bosch's tryptichs can't be a bad thing... Colin Ferrell (whom I have HATED ever since he didn't do anything decent after "Phone Booth") is bloody great. Ralph Feinnes is a right bastard, too.

Yeah, the Coen Brothers pulled a George Lucas with Blood Simple. The dvd version is their preferred version. So the theatrical(VHS) version will never see the light of day on disc.
They may have felt some of the scenes take too long to get going so they condensed many of them.
Unfortunately, It's much more atmospheric, and mood inducing with the longer cut.

I believe Blood Simple is phenomenal...but Miller's Crossing left me a little disappointed. If you're looking for unknown Coen Brothers films, check out "Barton Fink." It's incredible, and the ending made me laugh histarically.

Other somewhat unknown films -

"Audition" - An incredible Takashi Miike film about a man looking for a new wife, so he sets up a fake film audition, and chooses from the actresses whom he interviews. Sprinkle in some creepiness, and end it off with some fantastic gore, and you have one of the scariest films I've seen in a while.

"Cashback" - a fairly recent independent film that started as a short film, but the director decided to extend it to a feature - highly underrated, it is an extraordinary film, the cinematography is astounding, and the acting is great.

"OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies" - A french film that makes fun of Bond films. Much funnier than Austin Powers, but along the same lines.

"Redbelt" - A fairly new film by David Mamet. Honestly, probably the best film I've seen all year. A jiu-jitsu instructor is going broke, until he saves a movie star's life at a bar. Then things start looking up...then they start looking down - and just when you think it can't possibly get any worse, it does. Fantastically written and directed. And the acting blew me away - PLUS it has Chiwetel Ejiofor! The Operative is the main character (oh joy!)

I know I've seen many, many others, but I can't remember them offhand...

Another is Dangerous Beauty (Moira Kelly, Catherine McCormack), about French equivalent of Registered Companions (in Venice?) at a time of French collapse/decline. I found it viusally stunning cinematography.

I did not provide a summary of some I mentioned. Suspect zero might sound like a serial killer deal, but the subject matter is really a topic I won't reveal, but of interest to River-ability fans.
Lady in the Box is mystery, or thriller, an ending I couldn't predict. Normally I can see the ending miles away, this one had me guessing til the end.
Fate is the Hunter is the story of an investigation after an aircraft crash.

Some great picks here folks.
Most notable to me are:
Fandango - one of Costners best films IMO.
In Bruges - Tragic, funny and perfectly delivered.
The Duellists - fantastic film.
Le Bossu - a great French film with the superb Marie Gillain.

On that note I would like to add:
L'Appat (The Bait) - another French film with Marie Gillain (yes I'm a fan). Brilliantly played piece about young adults pulling a scam that gradually gets out of hand.
Lawn Dogs Sam Rockwell and Mischa Barton form a true friendship as the 'outcasts' in a community. Very touching with an excellent ending.
Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Tim Roth and Gary Oldman in a superb and slyly funny take on Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Mean Creek Great little tale (featuring the Culkin kid that can act) about a boat trip to get revenge on a bully that reveals some other truths.

There's probably more but that'll do for now...

The Man Who Knew Too Little.
Hilarious. Likely my favorite Bill Murray film. Amazed at now few have seen it.

Regarding Ponette, from th same year as The Little Princess, I thought it amazing to have 2 such performances from 2 actresses so young. I don't think many have seen Ponette, but I thought the story lacking to achieve "best" acclaim, but it was well suited for the age of Ponette - was she 4 at the time?

I'm adding a couple of unknowns:

Oscar (with Sly Stallone and Chazz Palmenteri)
from 1991. Stallone's first attempt at straight comedy role. Funny stuff that didn't quite catch on for some strange reason. It's not a blockbuster, but it grows on you with great comic timing and a solid supporting cast including a young Marisa Tomei. Any movie that has a character called Johnny Elbows can't be all bad.

I got 3 on the list of films many haven't seen before. Let's start:

1. Southie. This was an indie flick that was released in the mid-late 90's. It featured Donnie Wahlberg, Rose McGowan and Amanda Peet in one of Amanda's very 1st roles if not her first. The story was about a man who returned home to South Boston when he discovered many of his family were in trouble with various issues, only to find the trouble was worse than he thought. It is extremely hard to find these days as it was a limited DVD release. Also has a great music soundtrack as well but that was also a limited release as well. Best chance: EBay.

2. If Only. A little known Jennifer Love Hewitt film that contains her greatest acting performance to date period. Its little known because when it was filmed American movie studios did not believe a Jennifer Love Hewitt led project (she and her own production company produced the film and she starred in it) would make any money or profit in the US. Therefore it did not get a US movie theater distribution deal. However all other foreign country movie theaters did show it in 2004.

Hewitt stars as a foreign exchange music student that has a serious quarrel with her man and dies in an auto accident, leaving the man so crestfallen he wakes up the next morning and discovers he has a 2nd chance to save her. But is it more than it seems? This one is easy to find. Just $8 at Amazon.com.

3. Poolhall Junkies. A Mars Callahan vehicle that starred and was directed by and written by Callahan. It is the greatest billiards movie ever made. This makes both The Hustler and The Color of Money look like garbage. It features Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Walken, Alison Eastwood, Anson Mount, Ernie Reyes, Jr., pool legend Mike Massey, Rick Schroeder and was the great Rod Steiger's last role before he passed on. Just a great overall classic. Again an easy one to find. Amazon.com has it again for $8. There you have it. Out!

Once Around: is a 1991 romantic comedy/drama film about a young woman who falls for and eventually marries an overbearing older man who proceeds to rub her close-knit family the wrong way. It doesn't sound like much but it grows on you. If you guys like the character development in FF then you'll like this.
Here's another reason you may want to see it, the cast. Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, The great Danny Aiello, Gena Rowlands, Laura San Giacomo and Griffin Dunne to name a few. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom (Cider House Rules, Chocolat and the Shipping News).

Of films I've watched on DVD recently, these two may not be well known but well a try.

Kite Runner - a young boy in Afghanistan who cruelly betrays his best friend, then flees the country with his father when the Russians invade only to have to return many years later, when the country is in the clutch of the Taliban, to repay his depth. Visually beautiful and it really gets you a sense of a culture that may be different but still beautiful - and all that historical tragedy. Hopeful, though.

Paris, je t'aime - a movie in episodes, each one a few minutes in a different part of Paris. Sad, hilarious, hopeful, profound... some of the episodes are absolutely great. I adore the one with Natalie Portman and the last one, especially.

I'm thinking that also had Rachel Leigh Cook, Rachel Griffiths, and Bill Nighy. Charming flick. A similar feel I had from Awful Big Adventure, with Rickman, Georgina Cates, some Hugh guy.

Also just remembered The Last Mimzy, as I was buying it today. Wonderful performances by the kid actors.
And Zathura was quite good as well, better than I expected with such a young cast. Directed by Jon Favreau.

Harald and Maude - one of the most hilarious movies I've seen.

Death Trance - It was described to me as a live-action anime and is one of those WTF movies.

Into the Mirror - this is a Korean film that, to my knowledge, hasn't been released in the US. It's part supernatural thriller, part horror movie, part cop movie, and part mystery. I've only found it via torrents, but it is very good. Assuming you aren't bothered by subtitles.

If you saw Millenium - get the book, both are good, but you'd appreciate the book a lot more having seen the movie.

NVGhost - I did see Savior and got royally bitched out by my ex(this was before she was ex) for showing it to her cause she found it so terribly, profoundly depressing, but I think there was some guilt there too, seeing the consequences of us-n-them politics from the viewpoint of those impacted personally by them.

Damn good flick, but best watched with a couple valium handy.

I have had some difficulty navigating the various posts and films mentioned here - just a bit unwieldy.

Some of the posters in this thread seem no longer around.

My first post in this thread is the 5th overall, and I have tried to list all of the mentioned films of this thread in a summary there.

I am wondering something. How many have used the lists here to choose a film to watch, and how were the results? The results of In Bruges seem mostly positive, with one negative.
I have been quite a film buff for a while, so not many of these left me surprised, just tickling my memory when I read the names.
Is a thread like this useful to those looking for another film to watch? After all, there is usually some reality show we could watch instead.

I have no idea why it seems so few have watched Canadian Bacon. The last complete film from John Candy, and likely my favorite, alongside Uncle Buck. Awesome cast, fantastic hilarity (of the Canadian variety).

And Brazil made me a Kim Greist fan.

I rarely run into people who have seen L.A. Confidential. WTF? Although I do rarely suggest a film that Kim Basinger is in - she still has refused to honor her promise to leave America if only we would elect G.W. Bush.

I don't know that only a few people know about it, but The Debt doesn't seem to have had a lot of viewers.
Wonderful cast and story, I often confuse scenes in it with Munich.

A movie I watched a few months ago that not many seem to know of is a strange cult sci-fi movie from 1984 called Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension... the name is a mouthful and the movie is bizarre but I absolutely loved it.

I thought most people knew about it. Wonderful cast, most of whom are easily recognizable now. Including Clancy Brown 2 years before his Highlander turn.

I have heard things like that, but since Little China didn't traverse dimensions, I didn't consider it canon.

One of my favorites:

Rocket Gibraltor with Burt Lancaster, 1988 one of his last films. I believe that Field of Dreams was his last film released in 1989. He was fantastic in both.
