Is it the point of sex to make your partner orgasm, or yourself?
In other words, does your pleasure come mostly from your own, or your lovers'?
Personally. it's not all about me.
Thoughts?

Like in all forms of human interaction, I assume if the experience is not enjoyable for both participants, then they will eventually discontinue that form of interaction.
I guess you would call that mutualism. So I would say that continued practice of mutualism is important for the continued survival of the species.

Just to add another viewpoint:
If your partner's visible pleasure is your sole focus, this can become a rather mood-killing form of pressure for them to perform to your satisfaction. Very little is as unsexy as feeling constantly watched like some kind of orgasmo-meter to give feedback on the partner's performance.
Sometimes sex is not about writhing but about a feeling of connection, making orgasm extremely secondary.
What about people who aren't very vocal?
What if they're having sex to please you even if they're not necessarily in The Mood themselves - not pressured into it but wanting to give something to make you feel good?
I think a healthy balance between one's own pleasure and one's partner's is best. Focusing only on yourself is pretty bad, but focusing only on your partner can be just as blinding for you and uncomfortable for them.
I like Byte's term "mutualism". It describes that balance pretty well.

In all this, one thing has not been mentioned; what about someone pressured into having sex even when they don't want to? There are millions out there...mostly women. They fake it and never do get much pleasure. Just sayin'. And definitely ot talking about myself. Just felt it should be mentioned. In all this discussion, I thought they should be spoken up for.
I'm on the side of "mutualism". Sometimes I enjoy getting Jim off and not being "pleasured" myself but enjoying the banging just as much. With a woman, easier to get and give orgasm, for me, and of course there's no "banging" anyway, per se, so nothing to "work toward". I enjoy pleasuring, and enjoy being pleasured.
Admittedly I can't judge by any I haven't had sex with, but it always seemed to me like guys wanted to "get there" fastest And it always seemed like if they DIDN'T "get there", it wasn't enjoyable for them.
As such, I prefer women. We can pleasure for ages, and snuggle, and go back to pleasuring, take a break and start all over, etc., etc.--partly because we can have as many as we want I suppose. The pressure to get to the finish line, then it's over, with the men I've been with isn't as much fun for me.![]()

Someone must represent the position that coitus, in addition to being icky, is a zero sum game. Pleasure is finite. If you're enjoying your friction and mucus (that's all sex is, but for VD), then the person unfortunate enough to be having coitus with you isn't. Hence, to be fair, neither you nor your partner should enjoy it.

Unfortunately, your experiments and observations have led you astray. Try communicating with your test subjects sometime. Separate human beings don't share nerve endings, so it's possible that one might have some enjoyment without subtracting from that of their partner.
My studies have also concluded that it is gross, however, so you're not too far off the mark. I've also learned that this now inexplicably widespread practice was copped from a reproductive function, now rarely used for that intention. Only mutualism keeps them at it and from extinction, and so keeps the population awash with midges that will eventually form cocoons and emerge in the adult form. Were it not for mutualism, I imagine they wouldn't bother and would all find something better to do, like post on the internet.
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
My research confirms that human beings don't share nerve endings, but for the Corsican twins. This is as it should be, because if I shared nerve endings with Wulf, for example, I would be unable to resist constantly attacking my nads. Yes, it would hurt me, but it would hurt him, too, and that's the point.
But sex is more than nerve endings--and the nerve endings involved can be enjoyed without a partner. Sex has a psychological component, and this psychological pleasure is finite. There is no greater turn off than your partner having lots of fun. Its distracting and awkward and unwholesome.
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Ah. I find your follow-up explanation thoroughly adequate, and entirely consistent with the standard taboo against fun.
I suspect though that the subjects would have a different explanation, and I thought the primary objective was to try to understand the human perspective. Being that, in the past, imposing outsider perspective on the subject groups has resulted in inadequate predictions of behaviour.

For some people, non-essential biological functions aren't worshiped as the fundamental meaning of life. Equally, it might not necessarily mean something is wrong with them, but rather just that they are different.
I note that non-reproductive altruism is a common genetic encoding for socially organized animals, such as insects, and certain mammals, including humans.
So it's perfectly within the first and second standard deviation of human thought and behaviour. These non-reproductive altruistic tendencies can manifest through alternative sexual orientations, including absence of sexual orientation and lack of interest/attraction to either gender. To this small grouping of people, it could therefore also be within reason that sex might seem pointless, and unhygienic.
Your recommendation comes across like telling a gay man to try women again because he is over analytical/hyper-critical of his experiences with them.

I am NOT going to debate the pleasures of the flesh with someone who takes pride in NOT having them... This thread is about sex and I'm all for it!!! If you don't like it then why post here at all? It's like going to an Anti-gay rally when you are gay, which would be extremly masochistic and antagonizing and therefore illogical.
I understand why you are the way you are and respect your right to be that way and at the same time will always think of people like you as slightly damaged. If you got the parts and they work you were meant to use 'em. I'd say the same thing to anyone who would cut off a piece or decide not to use a part and tell 'em they were being (at best) illogical.
You will not convince me that asexuality is a norm... Deviations ARE normal, the deviant is not. You also can't tell me that you don't feel in the slightest bit left out -at the very least on a spiritual level because I can tell you from experience that you are MISSING OUT...Humanity is a communal species because it is advantageous to be so! You are at a disadvantage, whether or not you have chosen asexuality... If you are happy being illogical, great, I'm happy for ya!
Rant over, I'm done

I called you neither illogical nor damaged. Again, I'm wondering why I'm eliciting such a strong negative response from you, you're coming across as very defensive. When I say sex is gross, that does not mean I'm saying people who have it are gross. MB might, but he likes to be contrary.
This thread asked for what people think is the point of sex, and the question posed was whether sex should be about pleasure for the partner or pleasure for the self. This does not require any particular experience with sex to comment on, or any particular fondness for sex. My initial answer, BTW, was not "eww gross," but rather that for survival reasons pleasure in sex should probably be mutual.
I will not respect any of your suggestions that I should censor my opinion for your benefit, or get out. Nor should I.

I don't particularly get it either Iremist. Byte is as entitled to her opinion as anyone else is, and people often post in threads about something and express disdain or negativity about the topic.
Having the parts and not using them doesn't mean one is damaged; there are many reasons not to have sex in one's life, none of which necessarily have to do with being "damaged". It's a choice, and I guarantee life can be quite fulfilling without needing sex, especially for women!
I realize the sexual drive in men is pretty ingrained and makes it difficult for them to consider life without sex acceptable, but I think calling someone "damaged" OR "illogical"for choosing not to have sex is pretty pathetic.
There are many ways to be spiritual, with or without someone else, and many ways to connect and to love as well. I think your judgmentalism is unfounded and rather rude; what YOU believe isn't necessarily what the whole world believes, and I see no reason Byte should feel disadvantaged or missing out.
"Agreeing to disagree" is not a matter for judgment or censure. I think your judgment is unfair and inappropriate. Just my opinion.![]()

Irie, would you call Chris a deviant? After all, he HAS incisors with which to cut and tear meat, and he chooses not to use them.
There are people who enjoy all kinds of sex, and some people who enjoy none at all. Consenting adults, and all that. Freedom to sleep with whomever you want (as long as they're a consenting adult) also implied freedom not to sleep with anyone if you so desire. Or don't desire, as the case may be.
I find Byte to be different. A cipher, a puzzlement, refreshing at times, confounding at others. But I don't find her to be deviant.

Hmmp, just for your survey there, Chris - one of my primary rules is: if she ain't finished, YOU ain't finished, so there's that.
Of course, remember yer askin a Polyamorous Anarchist with a Vajrayaana based belief system, so bear that in mind...
So to me there's not much of an emotional context for sex - outside of intentional procreation attempts, it all fun and games to me, and IMHO acts of real love take place in the kitchen, not the bedroom, since the sharing of food is an act even more basic and primal than sex, and my primary method of expressing affection due to a personal demeanor that comes across to most folk in person as cold, remote and potentially violent.
People are who they are, for some the act of sex doesn't carry the level of meaning that others attribute to it, but if I cook you a full course meal with dessert, just because it makes you happy ?
Then you got somewhere, and it's got nothin to do with sex even then, but more common ground, affection, shared values, and an acceptance of who I am, who they are, the latter being more deeply important than anything cause most of my relationships have ever wound up blowing to flinders with the "You do not OWN me!" speech - mutual respect can pave the way, but the road never goes anywhere unless that fact is accepted, which it mostly hasn't been.
So.. sex.. *snaps fingers* ..just fun and games, really.
-Frem
PS. Also, as a rule, people are, in general, effing crazy - once you learn to accept this, you get along with em so much better.

Ok, I could really go off about the dumb ass stuff you babble on about, but I think I'll just mutually cross you off, too, and hit the hay 'Cause you are soooo not worth it.

Ummmm... Misty? I take it you didn't notice the "phony-intolerant" tag after Chris's little jab? I'm 100% sure he was joking, because he's not that intolerant even with Rappy!
I think maybe he was channeling one of his alters, TheRightStuff. ;)

You have me at a loss. You know my name but who are you? Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he's John Wayne? Rambo? Marshal Dillon?

Did you DELETE all your other accounts? How does one even go about doing so? In other words, I don't believe you only have ONE account; you might only be USING one - for now - but I'm betting you still have the other(s). "Mr. Multiple", indeed. I don't think that's how you intended that.

I asked Haken to vapourize my Ghost account so it wouldn't show up and he did, but then he had to reset the site, and the ghost came back...

And wouldn't you like to know, poor little shmuck ?
Not that I'd tell ya, since if you ever have taken the Samaya you've surely violated it in my sight, and I'd not share outside the circle regardless.
Still, it amuses me to torment you with the knowledge that everyone BUT you has a pretty good idea - maybe if you actually got something other than your hand you'd understand.

Well, everyone except me. I can safely say everyone and Kaneman has more experience than I do, hand or otherwise.
I understand the food thing more, Frem. Only I don't tend to share my food, either. But if I'm at a restaurant with a friend, and they have fries, they kinda let me mooch them off them, which is awesome. I'm pretty open with my money when people ask, so it's a fair trade.

Well, despite taking it in very, oh so VERY, different directions, I think we're probably alike in not really viewing the act of sex in the same emotional context as other folk.
You are who ya are, not that it'll ever stop me from kinda-sorta flirting with ya, commonality of thought and belief and all that...
But it's not like it'd BOTHER me, you not having those kinds of interests, I think you take my points as affection and/or "love" being something completely unrelated anyhows, and in ways that just ain't easy to explain to the normals.
Or to the weirdies, if you wanna consider us the normals.
All a matter of perspective, innit ?

Hooo yeah... If that conversation with Iremist up above isn't a perfect example, I don't know what is. Actually, I really would like to know why I get that response from people. She's not the first person on the internet I've encountered who's all "love and passion and desire, yippee!" and me all "..." and butted heads with them over it.
I've mentioned the girl at the other board I used to go to, she was a paladin-type, but even more fundamental than that was this one little thing we never saw eye to eye on. Her opinion on my "frigidness" and aromantic nature touched off animosity long before she started acting out her pally tendencies.
For the record, though, Frem, you might not wanna flirt with me, based on certain things you've told me about certain age-related situations.
Bah, flirting, that's another thing that's hard for me to be comfortable with. I'd prefer to cut the crap and just be seen as one of the lads, it works better that way.

Ah yes, Paladin-baiting... ummm, ohh, ok, let's NOT go there, wrong topic, hahahahaha.
Man, I could tell ya stories!
Ok, well, since that was offtopic, I'll throw in this one, which kinda is...
You know them gravity boot things, that whole (idiotic and discredited) hang upside down for your health thing, right ?
Well, given the topic, let's just say that no matter what it's actually rated for, that bar will NOT support the weight of two people even if they do weigh less than 250lbs total, and I found that out the hard way at a very inopportune moment...
Coitus Interruptus meets Coitus Concussionus, one could say.

Quote:It's both. Also it seems the one to initiate sex usually finds it more pleasurable. My girlfriend will go days without physical interaction(I give her space) and then out of the blue go animalistic on me. It's fantastic, but she certainly is the one initiating most times, and usually seems to get the most out of it.

I gave up asking for it when 80% of the time was

Ha!. Chris buddy you crack me up! Your intrigue in things is sublimely honest and interesting.
You know in the time I've been around I've noticed two things regarding sex...
When I was growing up it was all about yourself. Make yourself happy then split! But that's old hat now. Totally not the done thing...
Now it's about making sure your partner orgasms and you aint going nowhere until she has done! When you do - you spend the rest of the day boasting about it, and if you meet up with your buddies you go around talking about how great you are because you can make your partner orgasm.
Whatever way it goes -it's always about the man feeling good about it. (perhaps it's because of our fragile ego's who knows?) Either way we still want more!
