Ok, so my friend tried getting me hooked on Repo: The Genetic Opera. I got through about five minutes of it. I could not stand it.

So my question is what are some of the movies that you like that your friends and/or relatives despise?

-Vampires Kiss(1989) It is a strange film, and Nic Cage plays a lunatic very well. I really like it. All my friends hate it.

-Doctor Detroit(1983) Showed some friends clips of it, they laughed me out of the room.

-Slacker(1991) Richard Linklater's crowning achievement in my opinion. Shot in Austin, Texas 16mm. Some family members liked Dazed and Confused, so I let them borrow Slacker. They didn't speak to me for a while(because I wasted 2 hours of their life).

Batman & Robin- to me it's like a big-budget version of the 60's TV show. Only Sonisall & I like it, every other human in this system seems to despise it.

2010- most fans of 2001 seem to blow it off (Okay, it's not perfection like the first), but I like it, in the way that I Like Beneath The Planet of The Apes, even though the first was WAAAAY better.

I love the Weekend at Bernie's movies. Most of my friends make fun of me about it.

The whole premise is ridiculous, but it still makes me laugh.

Matrix Reloaded that one wasn't so bad in my opinion. I didn't really care for the cheesy Neo vs. a ton of Smiths fight, but everything else more or less worked.

I'll agree that Revolutions missed the mark by a wide margin.

I actually like both Matrix sequels, myself - though of the two I prefer Revolutions.

I think they committed the sin of not telling the story people wanted to see, but I appreciate that they shot for a much deeper, cerebral plot than 99% of action flicks go for.

Constantine. I don't know if it's so much that people hate it as it is that they hate Keanu Reeves, but I personally really like him. He is great in this movie too, he just needs to not play emotional characters is all...
Also I know a lot of people didn't like it because of the differences between the movie and Hellblazer, the comic it was inspired by. But I still think it is good regardless.

I can't think of anything I really like that is widely despised. I can think of quite a few things that seem to be widely liked but I haven't been able to sit through and/or have no interest in watching. Also, I forgot to mention in my other post about this movie. My sister was totally obsessed with it for a while, and made me watch it. Honestly it was one of the most disconnected, poorly written and plotholerrific things I have ever seen. Also the music is just aimless cacophony. Yet it is one of those things with a huge and very obsessive fanbase. I just don't understand.

Love "Slacker"! That was my real introduction to Austin when I moved here. We made a point of doing a "Slacker Tour" that we invented, tracking down every place that we could identify from the movie - G&N Steakhouse, Mount Bonnell, etc. - and going there.

One of my wife's old room-mates has a small role in the movie, as a doorman at the nightclub. His name is (no kidding) Electric Lord. It was Eric Lord, but he changed it to Electric, adding the "lect" to the middle. :)

The modern definition of "socialist" is anyone who's winning an argument against a tea-bagger.

I *liked* 2010, but it had its issues. Still, it does a fantastic job of "explaining" the first movie to those as needs it told... And of course Jupiter is just gorgeous.

Alright! Another fan. To be honest It is probably one of my favorite films of all time. Because of it's non-linear approach to film, and the amazing writing on the part of Richard Linklater. Some of his thoughts on life are very intriguing, at his worst his characters tend to seem a little schizo. He has amazing potential, and though Waking Life was good, I just didn't connect with the film.

Here's to the next great Linklater film!

Star Trek Nemesis. I maintain that the holographic confrontation between Shinzon and Picard summarizes the entire point of Star Trek. (Are we simply the result of the events that shape us, or do we have the capability to choose to be better than the world makes us?) It also has one of a handful of space battles in modern Trek that doesn't require the ships to be so close they can scrape hulls (space is huge, guys. You don't have to crowd together).

Devlin & Emmerich's Godzilla was no worse than any of the Toho canon. Godzilla has never been Shakespearean drama, and anyone who honestly expected the American version to be has no business reviewing movies. It also spawned one of my favourite animated series.

Yup - I loved that the "star" of the movie was the camera itself. You're just along for the ride, seeing whatever the camera sees along its ride through an ordinary day in an extraordinary city.

And I loved Dazed & Confused, too. Again, lots of familiar stomping grounds in that one.

Quite a few on Jongsstraw's list that I like too, and I'm not so sure all of them were negatively reviewed on first release.

Heart Like a Wheel
Altered States

Electric Dreams
Brainstorm

However, I have to say that anyone who puts Wild Things on the "Like" list is highly suspect.

Put me down on the Love Linklater list too, especially Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly, and most definitely Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. The only things of his I haven't liked were ones he did not write the screenplay - Bad News Bears, School of Rock, etc.

I've been trying to think of something that I like a lot but that most others don't, but I'm not sure. Maybe "A Boy and His Dog." Reviews for it ranged from very negative to "possibly the best SF film ever made" (Vincent Canby, NY Times).

There is another that I like that perhaps many others haven't even seen, so I have no idea how many would like it or hate it. Richard Lester's "The Bed-Sitting Room" from 1969.

Loved "A Boy and His Dog". Possibly the only decent thing Don Johnson has ever been in.

I'll add Something Wild, with Jeff Daniels, Ray Liotta, and Melanie Griffith? Jonathan Demme directed.

Also "The Lathe of Heaven", but that was done as a miniseries on PBS, not a full-on feature film, so it may not count. Then it was redone by Sci-Fi, I think.

Glengarry Glen Ross

I don't know how this movie fares with the rest of the world but all my friends think it is a boring, pointless film. Me, I really like like it and shows what a group of actors can do when sets and props are limited. And it shows that (some) stage plays can be adapted to the screen. An actor friend of mine insists that they can't be adapted well enough to be worth watching.

Not so much hated by my friends as met with a kind of 'half-hearted' shrug and an 'It's okay-ish' reply. I gather from reviews that this is a general reaction. Personally I really like it's subtle charm and consider it one of the better Coen Bros movies.

I liked Something Wild. Saw it long long ago though, so I don't know if I'd still like it now. Melanie Griffith is so cool.

I don't know if it's universally hated, but I certainly know some folks who couldn't stand Marie Antoinette. Yeah, I'd have been happier if they didn't cast a well-known actress, but Kirsten Dunst was actually pretty good. More importantly, the costumes and location and color palette are so sumptuous that I can (and probably have) watch that movie a million times over. And I like the modern punk-girl music.

Also: Showgirls. Horrible movie, yet oddly fascinating. I'd watch it again if it was on. (Wouldn't buy it though.)

I confess - that's been my general reaction, too. But there ARE some really great lines in there, like his tag-line for the hoop: "You know... for kids." That line still lives on at my house; my wife and I say it at the oddest times...

The Fountain - some regard it highly, others hate it, didn't do so well either...

Jersey Girl - Kevin Smiths most hated, apparently. I love it.

Zodiac - what're the thoughts on this nowadays? I remember when it came out everyone seemed to bitch about it...I love it

Constantine - Someone mentioned it above, I too thought it was pretty great

From Hell - Yet to read the graphic novel, and I'm sure it's better, blah blah, but I kinda dug the film. Not perfect, but meh.

Superman Returns - So many people bitch, but so much was fantastic. Didn't like the whole kryptonite weakness deal again, but Routh was a great Superman AND Clark, and Spacey made a pretty decent Luthor. Great Clark/Lois/Supes stuff.

The Amityville Horror (remake) - Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Chloe Moretz. What's not to like?

Land of the Dead - Yeah, yeah, it's got it's oddities, and it was fairly obvious with its commentaries, but it was a damn fine film. Dennis Hopper was great.

Cloverfield - Yes, it's fairly popular, but a lot of people seem to hate on it for the camera use and the 'unrealistic amount of lame "oh god" dialogue.' A MONSTER IS ATTACKING THE CITY! Surely you don't believe you'd be using extremely eloquent speeches professing your distress in that situation? And the camera worked. I loved it.

That should do for now.

Hate to say it, but I found Hudson Hawk at least mildly enjoyable. I watched it on TV, and didn't feel like I'd been robbed of my time. It was silly, but it was supposed to be silly.

10 Things I Hate About You
I recently got in trouble with my brother for owning this. Yeah, it's cheesy and a total dumb "Let's make Shakespeare modern", but the casting and soundtrack are just fun.

A Knight's Tale
Everybody hated the music...that it wasn't accurate, but I liked it. Can't stand the "princess" actress, but for Alan Tudyk I will put up with a lot.

Lady Hawke
A lot of people I know get stuck on the weird soundtrack (which I do agree is very bad), but its the sweetest tragic story ever with the cutest narrator.

On the other side of things, I hate and don't understand why others love:

Napoleon Dynamite
Except for the part with the shotgun and the inquisitive cow and the school bus. Everything else is just painful.

He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not
My mom raved and raved. It was ten years before I took any cinematic advise from her again. Terrible movie, of course her description of the plot didn't help...she said it was a misunderstood romantic comedy. It's more creepy stalker needs a permanent padded room.

Anything Audrey Hepburn
My sister has issued an edict prohibiting me from discussing this further. And that's all I can say on the matter.

Oh...the list of films I like that others can't stand is rather long. From what I can rattle off immediately, here are the highlights:

Independence Day --> it's 10 kinds of pro-USA jingoism, but it's a film I've always loved for the fact one of the primary heroes is a massive geek and techie, not a commando or police officer. Oh, and also cuz Adam Baldwin's in it ;D

The Last Starfighter --> besides being the first film (or one of the first films) to do complex VFX via computer, the film always gets me revved up from its ode to "The Hero's Journey." Plus, Robert Preston channeling Harold Hill as the alien shyster Centauri!

Driven --> let's see...car racing, check. Estella Warren, check. Sylvester Stallone, check! It's far from Oscar material but I seriously enjoyed this tale of old dogs teaching young guns some tricks :)

Grindhouse: Planet Terror --> when a film has the director himself cameo as an virus-infected soldier whose wedding tackle is shown (from the back and between the legs) to be MELTING OFF, you know it's high quality horror ;D

Robot Jox --> you can tell the majority of the budget went to the VFX (giant 'Mech battles!) with this awesome piece of B-grade excellence, BUT I appreciate what Stuart Gordon & Co. were doing with the project!

I'm always happy when I find out someone enjoyed a movie I hated--makes me feel better about all the love and hard work the artists responsible put into the thing, y'know?

And it always makes me happy to discover a movie everyone told me was just terrible and find that I like it.

In no particular order and by no means exhaustive:

All three Matrix films--I think the writing actually improves over the course of the trilogy--there's something kinda lame and Star Warsy for me about the dialogue in the first film. Can't really see how the word "cheesy" could apply to the fight with a hundred Smiths.

Alien 3 is my favorite of the series. Alien is, of course, a masterpiece, but the third one is my personal favorite

Forrest Gump--sure, it was hugely successful, but most the folks I knew at the time reviled it

Johny Mnemonic

Masters of the Universe was bloody brilliant!

Vampire's Kiss is one of my favorite Cage performances

Mine too! That is quite rare from my experience in talking about Alien films. I love the dirty gritiness of the cast and setting. Charles S. Dutton and Charles Dance's performances were terrific.

I too liked the music, made the film stand out. Yeah the 'princess' actress was pretty bad. I always thought he should have ditched her at the end and gone with the blacksmith (played by the beautiful and underated Laura Fraser). I see comparisons between her and Kaylee.
Plus Alan Tudyk and Paul Bettany are great as support.

So very much agreed, except that I didn't think there was a moment of unpainful. This is the movie that has inspired me to always drive my own car everywhere I go, because my ride refused to leave when I wanted to.
