Interesting bit on the topic

Pat Condell has been on my radar for a while now. Ask for him by name.

This one's nice!
I don't like all of his stuff. Some of his videos on Islam are a bit over the top for my taste, but this is a really nicely done, reasonable opinion piece.
Also, he has a really pleasant voice. Sounds much younger than he looks.

When I was 13, I would have been favorably impressed with blowhard Condell blasting religion for being fake. Now I see Condell is a self-righteous ass, a Ralph Nader for atheism. (For those who forgot, Nader had enough votes for President in 2000 to give Bush victory.)
If I prayed, I'd ask Jehovah to strike Condell dead, but since he and I agree that's impossible, I hope Condell will grow up. He is too old to be an angry teen.

I find his 'rants' to be humorous. Civil enough to get the point across, but snarky enough to poke at the other side.
He's not nearly as vile, smug or abusive as Mahr, who sees himself as some sort of messiah.
Mr C does poke the other side, here and there, but he's voicing his opinion. Why sugar coat it when you have religious nut cases threatening non believers to an eternity of hell and anguish ?

Quote:Condell is talking of God and religion with the humorous contempt a Tea Party Republican politician uses for Obama and the Democratic Party. Democrats are not persuaded, even if Tea sippers applaud. Condell is using the same rhetorical tricks to persuade the religious. The tricks won't work.

I don't think Pat's aim is to convince anyone, but to merely express his views.
I'm sure those who favor atheism will laugh along w/ him, while those on the religious side will take some offense, and those left in between.... probably aren't swayed, either way.
I'm wondering if anyone might take extra offense to his comments due to the fact that he's British and delivers his prodding with a wink and a smile.
Might have nothing to do w/ it, but maybe the ease at which others have in discussing such issues sort of tests the sensibilities of many Americans ?
Or not..... Just a WAG

Everybody has got an opinion; most stink. Condell is a Palin, a Glenn Beck, a dog that is all bark.
For bite, there's:

Bill Maher in Religulous [2008] www.imdb.com/title/tt0815241/

Well, Maher is right about some things - some religious nuts find you don't 'believe'?...they'll cut your head off. Straight up.

This is the way I saw it. Yes he's having a dig at believers but you can see him smile on several occasions as he's talking. He's making his point but with a humourous edge.
But then there's always that proportion of believers that will get offended by something like this. They don't realise that they can be offensive to non-believers.

And that truly is the gist of it. Many believers, those who want convince everyone that their slant on religion is ONE TRUE WAY, because it just so happens to be what THEY believe.
One of the most inane and oft repeated comments I get from believers is " I use to be just like you, I know how you think .
Much like Mal answered The Operative -
" You really don't"

Yeah, I've had that line as well from some religious friends. Another line I get a lot, particularly from Patrick who is very religious, is that "it's all part of Gods plan". That one really bugs me and I'm usually pretty easy going with people's beliefs (each to their own etc).
But the one that really gets to me is when something bad happens and the religious folks say that 'they'll pray for them.' They don't understand that I see it as being as useful as doing nothing. They think they are being helpful and that I'm not doing anything.
