Actually, I usually can't watch DiCrapio "act" for more than two minutes without busting out laughing, but he was actually decent in Inception. Perhaps that's a tribute to Nolan's ability as a director.

OF all the Sci-fi classics I've seen you list, or mention over the years I don't think you have ever shown love to Robinson Crusoe on Mars. An absolute classic. Please tell me you've seen it.

I would highly recommend Moon to anyone as well.
I remember A Boy And His Dog being quite good but it was many many years ago when I saw it.

I can say that I've never seen Forbidden Planet or any version Journey To The Centre Of The Earth.
Come to think of it if you want to class it as (loosely) scifi I've never seen The Wizard Of Oz either. I saw a live stage version and I've seen the video of a stage version with Jewel and Joel Grey but I've never seen the classic movie.

And possibly my biggest non-watch may be Soylent Green. I really can't be sure about this one, I sometimes remember watching it late at night during my teens but I can't remember anything about it and I'm usually pretty good at knowing what I've watched.

yes I second,or third, or whatever,the recommendation of "Moon". fabulous movie.

I've had a copy of district 9 on my HD for probably a year now, haven't watched it yet..

as for the gist of this thread, i have yet to make it through(only 2 attempts)"plan 9 from outer space"
i remember bits and peices of soylent green airing on cable early in my teens.

caught the last 10 or so minutes of forbidden planet a few years ago, but have yet to see it again.

have never seen either version of "the day the earth stood still"(replace a robot with keanu reeves? perfect casting!)(actually the robot probably had better emotional range)

still need to sit down and watch the old "apes" movies. saw them back in my teen years on cable, over the summer.( i think the channel may have been doing a Chuck Heston Marathon or something.... i remember virtually nothing)

i was born in august of 79, and there aren't a whole lot of films made before then i have actually seen...
other than star wars, the only ones that jump to mind are old jimmy stuart flicks (it's a wonderful life, & Harvey), and mabye a couple old Elvis movies one summer...

any suggestions?

chris,i went through a similar phase about 2 years ago, where there was this list of movies, that were out there in the public consciousness (mostly non sf) that i had never seen for whatever reason, so i sat down one day and put as many as i could think of in my netflix queue.
those next few weeks,i burned through
the godfather films
full metal jacket
apocalypse now
dr strangelove
taxi driver
scarface
goodfellas
a clockwork orange
just to name a few.

I remember as a kid there was this tv show i think it was called ARK the ship was large with 50 bio domes and 3 people would move around the ship having adventures.
Around the same time as SPACE 1999

So? You were drawing from a smaller pool of films (as the medium was younger and less prolific) during a time when there were far fewer options in terms of media.

By the time I was a teen, I had nearly 2 more decades worth of stuff to catch up on than you, right as the industry was kicking into high gear and making more films, AND as TV drama was hitting it's golden age, AND other technologies were competing for time.

Times change my friend, and with them, context.

Hahahahahahaah! Boyeeee, I had no internet, no DVD, no VHS! And with the meager resources of the Cinema re-running old movies, late-night & Saturday afternoon TELEVISION, I was able to glean four decades worth of SF in its NEAR ENTIRETY!!!
LOL, if I had had even VHS rental as an assist, I could have cleaved through those 40 years of fantastical footage in HALF the time!

Sure, availability is easier, which kinda exasperates the problem. Now, if the days were longer you might have a point. There has been more sci-fi made in the last 2 decades than the first 4. And I watch a hell of a lot more than just sci-fi. A LOT more.

And yet, there are still the same number of hours in a day, and I don't just watch movies.

Uh, I already answered that. In the 70's, you had 40 odd years of films to catch up on. Sure, fewer venues to watch on, but by dint of that, the seminal films were the ones shown a lot, so you had access.

In the 90's I had 60 odd years of films to catch up on, and while I had more ways to do it, I also had more other things to do.

And sure, we both had TV shows to watch. But TV started with a couple of channels of programming, and still was at what, less than a dozen when you were a kid? There were 50+ when I was a teen, and obviously lots since. Which also means more opportunity, but also a lot more content (since many of those extra channels produced their own).

Far more volume.

And like I said, that's just sci-fi, and that's not all I watch. For example, since I got NetFlix, sure, Ive caught up on some classic scifi I had missed (2001 as mentioned for example), but Ive also gone back and watched (or am working through) every film from Spielberg, Scorcese, Coppola, Kurosawa, Stone, Orson Wells, David Lean, and others while catching some old Billy Wilder and John Ford flicks. Plus foreign films and documentaries, and catching up on several TV shows I had never watched. And I surf online, play videogames, draw, paint and make films. And I have a girlfriend (now, not as a teen....).

I watched Kurosawa's "Dreams" and I don't think I will ever be the same. Cinema simply doesn't get better then that film.
Right now I'm on a Peter Weir kick. Just watched The Year of Living Dangerously(1982) and was blown away by Sigourney Weaver, and Mel Gibson. Talk about the right chemistry in a film...wow. Of course The Vangelis musical bit helped.

About 7:30 onward. That's cinema.

Blood of Heroes is one of my fav movies in recent times (a remake? or should they leave it alone?)

I had karate 3 times a week, 17 monthly comics I read and super 8 films I made constantly. Oh, AND catching up on I Married A Monster From Outer Space, Invasion Of The Saucer Peeps & on & on. Half of what I watched was crap, but in the 90's I could at least have had the opportunity to pick & choose. More availability = less wasted time on junk like Logan's Run the series.

I was voracious. And in my mid-teens it seemed to dry up. I had seen everything. Every new movie or show (yes even that crap Logan's Run with the abominable Heather Menzies) was a target for my attention.

That's the feeling I get whenever I watch a Nolan directed movie. He gets the best out of his actors - both stars as well as character actors. Joseph Gordon Levitt was solid, every bit as good as DiCaprio (IMHO).

Take a peek at The Lookout: JGL is very good in this one. A solid B indy heist movie on par with '93's Red Rock West.

Say it ain't so Lwaves. Some of the best sci-fi classics around. Forbidden Planet, Soylent Green and (horror of all horrors) the Wizard of Oz (although not really sci-fi, but still the epitome of classic movies).

Hahahahahahaah! Boyeeee, I had no internet, no DVD, no VHS! And with the meager resources of the Cinema re-running old movies, late-night & Saturday afternoon TELEVISION, I was able to glean four decades worth of SF in its NEAR ENTIRETY!!!
LOL, if I had had even VHS rental as an assist, I could have cleaved through those 40 years of fantastical footage in HALF the time!

Yeah, we had it rough back in prehistoric times (as my niece likes to remind me), we walked 50 miles to school, barefoot! We had to crank both the cars and telephones (just after we stopped using smoke signals). Kids today have it easy - instant everything at their fingertips.

As an aside, I recently watched an old movie that I saw years ago on the Late Show (usually Friday or Saturday night) - Room for One More with Cary Grant, who I thought was so cool back then (mid-sixties). Man is that movie dated. It's funny how you remember things as a kid, then as an adult you think - man is this cheesy.

Although sometimes I get nostalgic for some good old fashion movies (the classics are so because they ARE timeless), I still prefer today's lightspeed living. Internet, dvds, cell phones. But the one thing that remains constant with movies is - you still need a good story.

I figured as much, your a 70s TV geek and you like Firefly. Rainy days and bad sci-fi; like Mal and Inara - they just go together.

My favs as a kid Flash Gordon and Commando Cody; it doesn't get any better/badder than that.
