OK all here's our new thread
I'd like to celebrate one of our long time patrons who never seems to know how truly AWESOME she is
and a side of ice cream sammies and red vines for the HK gorgeousness

I'll 2nd the awesomeness that is Roxy. How could I not? She is smart, beautiful, funny, and loves to kill zombies.

And of course there's her ability to render Navy speechless ( well ok if she could render me speechless it'd be more impressive)

I'm all for that celebrationing.
Though, she wishes she could render me speechless. Then I wouldn't be able to act out my "gangsta" persona in wal marts and get us shot. I'm too legit to quit though. Word.

Hey all,
how hardcore is the Honey Badger?
also, of course Roxy is ace.
Not so ace, my work colleague who's mysteriously off this morning, the day after the heat v cavs game (show at one am over here)
So how we all doing, anybody got anything good planned for this weekend.
Me, I'm getting a hair cut, finally

A thread for the awesome that is Roxy? Well of course we need a thread for that. Not sure why we haven't done one before now!!!
(sets out a drink for Roxy that will knock her socks off)
(sets a Glomp-Trap in front of said drink)
Not sure about anyone else but Friday for me (this week anyway) means OT all day. What a crazy week but I get to eat this month and X-mas shop with all the extra cashey-monies I will have.

Yes, yes, I nearly got humiliated/killed-ed at my local Walmart by my lil brotha, Navy. Now time for a lil payback:
Awwww, loooook! See, he's harmless, my baby bro.

*reaches for the drink, but gets caught in trap. still proceeds to drink said drink even glomped*
Man, I need a vacation from... everything. Still home, still stuck in my sucky life, but hey, at least I'm getting a new roof today, lol. Anyone wanna kidnap me? Anyone? Please?

Celebrating the awesomeness of Roxy?? How easy this will be! Because there are so many awesome qualities to pick from! Like her beauty, brains, creativity, humor, and kind heart. I am sad to say I have not spoken to Roxy in a long while but I will always consider her my awesome friend! She has been there for me many times when I was nothing but an annoying teenager full of angst! And I will always hold her in the highest regard.

I'd offer to kidnap you Roxy, but sadly, I'm broke. I could offer a place to crash at if someone decides to kidnap you and hide you out thisaway. (How well you'd be hidden, since I'm sure that a lot of men would be tripping over themselves to meet you in "paradise" would be a different story...but hey! Good time to get a tan and flirt with some of the stars that work/hang out here...)

I'm closer, but that just means our weather's as sucky as yours.
I'm in the middle of crunch-time at the end of the semester, finals start next week, and the guest room is currently the "just shove that crap in there for now" room... but if you want to run away you're welcome to hide here. Kidnapping would have to wait until I can make the drive.

Doctroid just sent me a link on FB to a commentary about Fringe.
They just got moved to Friday night. (dum da DUMMM!)
So the title writers named the first episode for that slot "Firefly".
I particularly liked this reply (see below).

Firefly is in its ninth season in the alternate universe. The Fringe producers should call in the Firefly cast to make a short clip from an episode on the other side.

Standing by.
Okay, "The Duchess" with Keira Knightly and Ralph Fiennes...
Lush. Strong women. Character driven. Visually stunning. I cried.
(Of course I'm under stress and therefore more emotionally labile than usual, but still...)
Two finals down. All homework handed in. Lab reports finished and turned in. Research paper completed and given to the TA.
Two optional review classes tomorrow and then I'm on my own for two finals (the two hardest of course) Monday and another one Thursday.
Boychild is acting up a bit and experiencing bus problems with the little um.. darlings.. that ride in the afternoon. We are not best pleased at present and We have made him aware of this situation. Ahem (glare).
My father ran off to (probably) Costa Rica and didn't leave any forwarding information for his tenant, who is a friend of mine. I refuse to let him force me to take care of things for him. He's a big boy, he can clean up his own damned messes.
Doctroid is a veritable rock, and deserves many expensive and wonderful toys to delight and amuse him, which I am unable to afford at present.

Boot.
Possibly steel toe.
To the keister.
He had a problem of some kind with another child and got himself kicked off the bus yesterday for two days between the two incidents.
Plus now for my added fun I get to write a nastygram to the TA who split town for break (say his officemates) before finals week even started since he was done with our lab.
I will be cc-ing the prof.
Really.
Yes the semester was that bad. No, it's not just me who's disgusted. Yes, I'm probably the only one who's obnoxious enough to say something about it.
I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and putting it down to being a PhD candidate with two lab sections, four years of teaching it, and a funeral about midway through the semester.
Everybody else seems to be thinking "disorganized slack-ass stoner". (They're probably right, but I'm trying to be positive here.)
Something needs to be said, clearly, politely, and firmly, about handing things back before the final exam.
Now I don't have time to correct the lab I got a 40 on (surprise!) before he has to hand in the grades, so kind of him to give me the option though. I just got that one back today, and it was the second or third thing we handed in this semester waaaay back in September.
Doctroid's sick today. I'm studying at school to avoid the germs because I have finals next week.
Had he been feeling like crap last night I'd have slept elsewhere, it's probably too late for me.
Save yourselves! Wipe your keyboards!

Oh it's so far beyond too late for me to save myself.. come on I work in a school filled with diseased gibbons disguised as teenagers.

I'm running it by Doctroid to make sure it's clear I'm not trying to lawyer my way into a better grade, just want to make sure next time doesn't suck so badly for everyone else.
I am an adult and should have been assertive about getting feedback from him sooner, but the three grades I had to run on weren't that bad.

I'm trying to study.
Doctroid's sick, and I feel like I might be coming down with whatever it is. (Fatigue, possibly a little queasiness? Weird.)
Did not do well on Genetics final, but at least it gets replaced by iClicker score.
Genetics Lab final was a 64 (fail), but I'm checking with my lab partners to see if they can explain about the last question, because I thought I got it right. If I did, then it's 6 points and a passing grade.
I'm tired. Not quite passing out tired, but tired. I want to watch a tv show, but even the network's not showing it. Dumbasses are skipping two eps and I'm pretty sure I'll just be lost if I watch the one they've released.
Buzzer on the meatloaf's going off, time to check it.
Freezing rain supposed to start after midnight. Hopefully the power holds this weekend. More snow to follow in the week to come. Yippee.

1> WTF? Has he *seen* you???
2> Browncoats get their tips on marraige from Zoe and Wash, so they're the best spouses ever
3> They get their tips on how to handle breakups from River

6>Your friends can totally kick his ass. Ken, Sara, Jimi, Joey, Bryce, David... heck, even I can hair pull with the best of 'em
7> Clearly he is threatened by strong, independent thinking women

Roxy rocks!
Okay, I'm having cocoa after studying since this morning.
I'm also officially irritated now.
So the TA sends me an email indicating that he has two of my labs which were not in the correct format, with significant components missing and I need to redo and get them to him ASAP so he can turn the grades in or the ones he's giving me otherwise will stand. (Grrr......)
So I wrote back asking 1)Which SPECIFIC components?
2) When exactly is it that they need to be back to him?
(I should have also asked 3) How the hell am I going to get them to you as you've left for the break?)
I got back a two sentence reply. The guidelines/rubric are posted on the website. He has to turn them in Friday.
Which translates to "figure it out for yourself"
If I knew what was wrong I would have fixed it BEFORE I handed it in, now wouldn't I?
Fuck this shit.
I forwarded everything to just before the last comment to the prof (I'll save that last bit for tomorrow or something when I hear back from him). I expressed my displeasure at suddenly having three labs to rewrite extensively with three finals this week and no specific deadline for the rewrite, and while we're at it I want to see about the last few questions on the exam, since I thought I understood the material and would have sworn I nailed the last question which is worth 6 points and would have brought my grade from a 64 to a 70. (Since I've had time to look over the exam and say "wha..?".)
I want to learn from my mistakes, not just know I got something wrong.
But everybody here is shiny and ah lurves you alls!
PS: I started a thread housing a neat video from my school. I'll stick it in here so you don't have to go hunt it down. (It would be pretty awesome if this went viral because it's well done and explains some complex concepts fairly simply and concisely.)

Thursday morning pre-last-final-exam bump!
Okay.
I give up.
I tinkered with the first lab report and emailed it yesterday morning.
I've gone over each of the other two labs. At least twice.
I have made sure they were double spaced, TimesRoman 12 point.
I have triple checked that they contain each segment listed as required and none that weren't.
I could find nothing other than two typos I missed the first time and a shocking lack of italicization for the term Alu (unless it's not supposed to be italicized in which case I just fucked it up completely).
I have no idea what's wrong with them.
I retitled one just for shits and giggles.
I will be resubmitting them today after I take that other final.
I get whatever grade I get, and as the TA indicated they were going to have a significantly lower grade than if they were correctly formatted it will not be pretty. He made it sound like Doomsday, and since the first lab came back to me with a 40 last time I am willing to agree on that count.
Unless he's just completely broken with reality and the labs are actually just fine the way they are. (The rest of them were and got decent grades, why not these?)
Or he's gotten me confused with someone else this whole time.
I just don't care any more. I will keep telling myself that until the bloodthirsty rage subsides.
"Fuckit" mechanism engaged.

I celebrated the holiday season by spending $700.00 to fix the surprise broken water main underneath my front yard and almost spending a thousand more to fix the oil rings on my old Saturn. I'm not looking forward to my water bill.
My saint of a mechanic told me that the car would run about another 30,000 miles before the engine needs to be completely rebuilt and that it would cost more than its worth. I'll start looking for a newer used car...no point in spending that money on it.
I really am not looking forward to doing car payments again.
I've decided to get my passport so that this summer I can spend a week somewhere where there are empty tropical beaches and fruity drinks with parasols in them.
It snowed in Las Vegas this morning. The road to work was closed until 10:00 ish.
Other than that, things are great. I have an actual house to fix and money in the savings account to fix it, and the old car still runs, so I'm counting my blessings.

Browncoat Island? Tropical paradise? Where do I sign on? And slide me down a Pina Colada while you're at it.
So last night while I was in Barnes & Noble trying to find extra paperback copies of "The Hunger Games" for book club, there was a guy standing there with a Nikki Heat book in his hand muttering to himself if this really was a Richard Castle book. I told him I'd read them both already, and while they are no Michael Connelly books, they are fun and frothy.
We got to talking (animatedly) over our mutual Nathan crushes, and I convinced him to watch "Firefly" on Netflix. I told him all about the Firefly shoutouts that go on on Castle (he remembered the "space cowboy" costume).
It was so nice to cross paths with someone else out in the dorkosphere who doesn't roll their eyes at me when I'm talking Firefly/Castle/Nathan!
We traded email addies. I hope he actually emails me. I hope he comes to one of our Firefly meetup events.
When do you find out about the house?

(Slides a surprisingly large pina colada down the bar)
Order up!
We're getting ready to go house hunting. I talked with someone yesterday and we're pre-approved for a mortgage. I'm packing up my sewing room since I won't use it for the next six months anyway and I've got the time now. Which is a luxury I won't have in a few months.
On the bright side: we'll be going somewhere which, should it need a large repair, we'll be able to fix without impediment or unnecessary aggravation. Yay!
Beats the hell outta watching the siding fall off and the windows come apart and not being able to do a damned thing about it.
While I'm at it I think I'll have a pina colada too.
(Magics up a large batch of them for anyone wandering by. Then puts a Martini, a mango smoothie, and a perfectly chilled Dew in stasis for applicable recipients should they wander by, and goes to commune with the potted palm.)

(Just loving my extra large pina colada - look extra rum, extra pineapple, hmm...can't remember if that's my safe word or not.)
Adding a remote controlled helicopter and exploding incense to the shrine.

Barkeep! A pint of Guinness if you please!
(Feeling traditional tonight.)
I just spent a marathon cocoa/too many cookies/games evening with Boychild after dragging him to two open houses. (Not hunting, not stalking, more casually looking around...)
I also managed to find almost half my sewing room! Maybe I'll find another chunk of it tomorrow!
I should really review some chemistry, but Doctroid brought home a library book that he's not going to get to right away. I should also get out some yarn and start knitting my first attempt at socks, which is a goal of mine for this winter break and there's only about a week left.
Busy day, but good!
Now where's that Guinness...? (Wanders over to stare at the tap until it relinquishes.)

Leaving a pan of raspberry-chipotle brownies with chocolate ganache frosting on the bar for them that need a chocolate fix to get through this Monday.
'Shame they won't let us have a margarita machine at work....

I skipped the raspberry and ganache and used cayenne and cinnamon instead.
They were pretty good.
I even wrote down what I did not too long after doing it so there'd be a chance of reproducing it if it turned out well. (GASP!! That's almost a recipe!)

Barkeep, give me whatever. It's been a day!
Early this morning, my dog, in her infinite wisdom, decided to chew up and swallow my disposable razor, which she stole out of the shower. She threw up most of it, but I still had to call work and tell them I would be late because the vet didn't open until 7:00.
Worried most of the day. They took x-rays, and there is still a blade inside of her, but she's been sent home with lots of dense canned dog food to "coat" it as it makes it's way through.
She goes back for another x-ray on Sunday.
On the other hand, I stopped at the Starbucks drive-through after I left her, got up to the window to pay for my coffee, and the car in front of me had paid for it! Someone had paid it forward! That never happens to me!
I took it as being a little bit of good karma sent out from the universe, and so I paid it forward for the person who was behind me. I was happy to do it. Fridays need a bitty bit of caffeinated happiness spread around.
Paige, my dog is now asleep on my bed.
I'm going to a FF viewing party tomorrow night. :)

Hi all!
Been a while; busy holiday season and a long-planned visit to Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter (gift to my sister; a retired librarian who is bonkers about the books.)
Need me a butter beer.

(Sets the automated bartender to "butterbeer" and pushes "GO".)
You know, I actually ran across a historical recipe for buttered beer somewhere recently. It's supposed to be absolutely lovely.
You think that recipe's one of the things they'd bring out to the black when they left Earth-That-Was?

When I was still teaching 3rd grade, I had a student - a big, tough, limited English student, who picked up one of the Harry Potter books. It was way beyond his abilit (I thought), but hey, he was reading. It took him two months to finish it, but he did, and he passed the online test, too, so I knew he understood it. By the end of the school year he had read all four of the HP books (that was all that had been published) and had turned into an avid reader. His Endlish language skills flourished, and he changed from being kind of a schoolyard tough, to being a really cool kid.
I love Harry Potter. Still have kids reading them, although the Rick Riordan books are a bit "hotter" with the kids now.

I adore the Harry Potter books. I've read each one so many times it's ridiculous.
I got into them after the 3rd book was published. I was watching my goddaughter for a weekend while her parents were out of town ( she was 10 or so) and she was reading the 2nd book. I read her a few chapters then after she went to bed I stayed up and read books 1 and 2, then when her parents got home I went to the store and bought 3. Been reading and re-reading them ever since
I am totally jealous of one of our elementary schools. They have a life sized realistic Dobby in a glass case.

*HUGS MsA*
Will teh late paperwork that's been done be usuable for another home? *fingers crossed that it will, and that you'll find one that beats your dream home*
*swipes a substitution justsu from Naruto and uses it to fill ninjakitty's arms with a basket filled with: 1) a properly chilled and polished Can-O-Dew, 2) box of red vines, 3) an ice cream sammich, and 4) a box of eggos and assorted toppings (whip cream, syrup, fresh berries, coconut syrup, jellies, etc.)*
