The fallout map below is false.
You can read the Snopes Info regarding it.

As a result, I renamed this thread so that we can track the status of the Fukushima reactors.

Oh that is not good.
I got some interesting phone calls recently asking if any of my surplus-disposal or other former military contacts might know where aircraft with heavy lift capacity might be found in a hurry - fortunately there is an american subdivision of Sikorsky which has at least some heavy lift S&R choppers which might be useful, so I put them in touch...
Apparently they're shorthanded on carrier based heavy lift Search and Rescue, choppers are ideal for that, especially given the situation, and the Navy diverted one craft to Korea to collect up "everything they had", and cleaned them out completely - those were CH/MH-53's I think, which ought to be on site now and I hope they're useful.
How you doin in the islands, Haken ?
I hear it wasn't as bad as feared, and I winced at the thought of you getting swamped.

Sheesh - That's the kind of graphic that can start mass hysteria. It would be nice to know the source so we could have a sense of who is saying that. AND it would be nice to know how flipping dangerous that really is. Answers.com - a very questionable source - says: "About 500 to 1000 RADS is enough to kill a human. it takes between 1-5 days for the radiation to kill all the cells in a human body."

Found an identical map where the logo had changed and all the numbers in the legend had been divided down by about 150. I also found a lot of websites calling the map a hoax, but none were reputable news sources themselves.
I wouldn't lose any sleep over this one yet.

It's a hypothetical, as far as I know they've only measured high radiation levels within certain buildings, not outside in the environment for widespread dispersal.
But wind patterns would absolutely carry the fallout across the ocean and hit the US.

UPDATE AS OF 8:30 A.M. EDT, SUNDAY, MARCH 13:
Tokyo Electric Power Co. continues to implement emergency cooling and pressure relief operations at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station. In addition, at Fukushima Daini, three reactors remain shut down. They have electrical power available at Daini, but the suppression water pools used for reactor cooling are saturated at both sites.
Fukushima Daiichi: There is a state of emergency declared at Fukushima Daiichi 1, 2 and 3. The company is venting containment structures at reactors 1 and 3. Reactor 3 uses mixed-oxide fuel. Electrical power is not available at any of the reactors at this site and there is not backup power available at Units 1, 2 and 3. TEPCO has been pumping seawater into reactors 1 and 3 to maintain cooling and there is some uranium fuel rod damage suspected at both reactors. Public evacuation has been ordered and executed in a 12-mile radius and there have been low levels of radiation released into the environment as a result of venting and the explosion at Unit 1 secondary containment. The maximum reported dose at the site is 128 millirem per hour, which is less than the annual average dose for commercial airline flight crews and far less than the radiation the average American is exposed to per year from all sources (see the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Web page on radiation protection). One worker at the site has received a radiation dose of 10.6 rem.
Fukushima Daini: There is a state of emergency at Units 1, 2 and 4 and evacuation has been ordered and executed for 2.5 miles around the plant. There has been no radioactive release reported at the site. There is electric power available at all four reactors at the site, but there is limited use of cooling water pumps at Units 1, 2 and 4 due to damage from the tsunami. The suppression pools are saturated at all three reactors.
Comments from Japanese officials:
The company is providing seawater and boron for core cooling at Fukushima Daiichi units 1 and 3 and is venting containment at the reactors, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yukio Edano, said on Sunday. Officials are acting on the assumption that a meltdown could be underway at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3. "Unlike the No.1 reactor, we ventilated and injected water at an early stage," Edano said.
Authorities are preparing to distribute iodine to protect people from radioactive exposure.

Radiation and the Japanese Nuclear Reactors
March 2011
Key Facts
An earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on March 11, triggering a tsunami. Along with the loss of life and damage, Japan also faces the challenge of stabilizing nuclear power plants in the hardest-hit region.
After the earthquake, all the operating reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear plants shut down automatically, as they are designed to do. However, due to the loss o

Tokyo Electric, battling to avoid a meltdown at its Fukushima nuclear plant, faces “severe” rebuilding costs and Toshiba’s nuclear business may see increased scrutiny, said Minoru Matsuno, president of Value Search Asset Management Co. in Tokyo.
Radiation levels near the Fukushima plant, located 135 miles (217 kilometers) north of Tokyo, rose above Japanese limits after an explosion yesterday destroyed the walls of the reactor building. Nippon Steel Corp., Suzuki Motor Corp. and Canon Inc. today joined the growing number of companies saying their operations were hurt following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake on March 11 that rocked Japan and triggered tsunamis.
“For Tokyo Electric and anything nuclear-related, it’s going to be pretty bad,” said Makoto Kikuchi, chief executive officer at Myojo Asset Management Japan Co., a Tokyo-based hedge fund advisory firm. “The biggest fear I have is what will happen at the nuclear power plant as it would be a real disaster if the situation deteriorates into another Chernobyl.”
Disruptions at Shin-Etsu and Sumco Corp. account for about 60 percent of the world’s electronic wafers, will undermine global supply, which may benefit the No. 3 producer, Wacker Chemie AG’s Sitronic, according to Klaus Ringel, an analyst at Credit Agricole Cheuvreux.
Dennis Chan, an analyst at Yuanta Financial Holding Co., wrote March 11 that Sony, which has factories in Fukushima-ken and Tochigi-ken in northern of Japan, may be affected. The company makes about 10 percent of the world’s laptop batteries, according to Chan. The company said today that it’s halting production at eight factories that make products ranging from Blu-ray discs, magnetic heads and batteries.
Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. said thousands of new vehicles were damaged. Toyota will suspend production at its dozen factories in Japan and its body makers on March 14, while Honda said it will stop production at factories in Sayama, Mouka, Hamamatsu and Suzuka.

Japan battles to stop nuclear catastrophe
Prime minister Naoto Kan said Japan faced its “worst crisis” since the second world war as the nation grapples with the aftermath of Friday’s earthquake and tsunami and the increasingly serious situation at two nuclear reactors reports the Financial Times.
His warning came as fears grew that the death toll from the devastating tsunami would ultimately be measured in the tens of thousands.
I believe that by coming together as a nation we can overcome this crisis,” Mr Kan said in a televised news conference.
While rescue workers worked around the clock to find survivors of the tsunami along Japan’s north-east coastline, nuclear experts were trying to prevent a nuclear meltdown at an atomic plant in Fukushima, some 240km north of Tokyo.
Earlier on Sunday, Yukio Edano, the chief government spokesman, said there was a “significant chance” that radioactive fuel rods had partially melted in two reactors [Number One and Number Three] at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility.
More than 24 hours after engineers began pumping seawater into the Number One reactor, the water level inside its containment vessel and that of the Number Two reactor, remained significantly below levels needed to cool their uranium fuel and prevent a full nuclear meltdown.
Seawater injection at the second reactor began early on Sunday morning, but nuclear safety officials said the water level was not rising as intended. Olli Heinonen, former deputy head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the Japanese authorities were “having tremendous trouble”.
“As they long as they can maintain a reasonable level of cooling at the affected reactors, they can avoid partial or full meltdown,” said Mr Heinonen. “But if they fail tNOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME

Who do you trust on this info? Japanese nuclear agencies have a history of misrepresenting "occurances" in the past according to cnn (brave).
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate01.html
"Japan Earthquake Update (14 March 2011, 07:00 CET)
Japan´s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) has provided the IAEA with further information about the hydrogen explosion that occurred today at the Unit 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. A hydrogen explosion occurred at unit 3 on 14 March at 11:01 am local Japan time.
All personnel at the site are accounted for. Six people have been injured.
>>> The reactor building exploded but the primary containment vessel was not damaged.<<<< The control room of Unit 3 remains operational.
The IAEA continues to liaise with the Japanese authorities and is monitoring the situation as it evolves.
Japan Earthquake Update (14 March 2011, 05:15 CET)
Based on information provided by Japanese authorities, the IAEA can confirm the following information about the status of Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 at Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant.
All four units automatically shut down on 11 March. All units have off-site power and water levels in all units are stable. Though preparations have been made to do so, there has been no venting to control pressure at any of the plant´s units.
At Unit 1, plant operators were able to restore a residual heat remover system, which is now being used to cool the reactor. Work is in progress to achieve a cold shutdown of the reactor.
Workers at Units 2 and 4 are working to restore residual heat removal systems.
>>> Unit 3 is in a safe, cold shutdown. <<<
>>> Radiation dose rate measurements observed at four locations around the plant´s perimeter over a 16-hour period on 13 March were all normal. <<<
Japan Earthquake Update (14 March, 2011, 04:00 CET)
Japan´s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) has informed the IAEA that there has been an explosion at the Unit 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
The explosion occurred at 11:01 am local Japan time.
The IAEA is seeking further information on this development.
Japan Earthquake Update (14 March 2011, 01:30 CET) - Clarified
Based on information provided by Japanese authorities, the IAEA can confirm the following information about the status of Units 1, 2 and 3 at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Unit 1 is being powered by mobile power generators on site, and work continues to restore power to the plant. There is currently no power via off-site power supply or backup diesel generators being provided to the plant. Seawater and boron are being injected into the reactor vessel to cool the reactor. Due to the explosion on 12 March, the outer shell of the containment building has been lost.
Unit 2 is being powered by mobile power generators on site, and work continues to restore power to the plant. There is currently neither off-site power supply nor backup diesel generators providing power to the plant. The reactor core is being cooled through reactor core isolation cooling, a procedure used to remove heat from the core. The current reactor water level is lower than normal but remains steady. The outer shell of the containment building is intact at Unit 2.
Unit 3 does not have off-site power supply nor backup diesel generators providing power to the plant. As the high pressure injection system and other attempts to cool the reactor core have failed, injection of water and boron into the reactor vessel has commenced.
>>> Water levels inside the reactor vessel increased steadily for a certain amount of time but readings indicating the water level inside the pressure vessel are no longer showing an increase. The reason behind this is unknown at this point in time.<<< To relieve pressure, venting of the containment started on 13 March at 9:20 am local Japan time. Planning is underway to reduce the concentration of hydrogen inside the containment building. The containment building is

Just a quick update.
Fukushima I reactor 2 seems to be damaged. Valves normally used to vent off pressure is damaged. To compound the problem, there seems to be a leak in reactor 2 and workers are having difficulty maintaining the water level which led the fuel rods being exposed to air twice.

Considering that it was not made by the folks whose logo appears on it, it has no associated information about where the figures it shows come from or how they're derived, and it shows radiation levels (from other comments I've seen) higher than those at Chernobyl ground zero, It seems a thoroughgoing fraud created by someone to stir up concern.
If folk were going to do real modeling and publish it, you would think they would claim it, and not use someone else's logo as identification. I suspect they used ARS's logo to make it look more 'official'.

But don't discount the idea of fallout hitting America, because that's actually plausible. Like I said, we get pollution in the western US from Beijing. Check out where Beijing and Japan are relative to each other.

The impact of all this extends far beyond China’s borders. Taken as a group, its coal-fired power plants emit the world’s highest levels of sulfur dioxide (a major element of acid rain) and mercury, both of which rise high into the atmosphere and hitch a ride on air currents circling the globe. One study, published last year in the Journal of Geophysical Research, calculated that three-quarters of the black carbon pollution in the atmosphere over the western United States originates in Asia. It is estimated that as much as 35 percent of all the mercury pollution in the western United States comes from abroad, and China is most likely the main culprit.

CNN -- U.S. Navy personnel are taking precautionary measures after instruments aboard an aircraft carrier docked in Japan detected low levels of radioactivity from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the Navy said Tuesday.
The USS George Washington was docked for maintenance in Yokosuka, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) from the plant, when instruments detected the radiation at 7 a.m. Tuesday (6 p.m. ET Monday), the Navy said in a statement.
Personnel will limit outdoor activities and secure external ventilation systems there and at a nearby air facility in Atsugi.
"These measures are strictly precautionary in nature. We do not expect that any United States federal radiation exposure limits will be exceeded even if no precautionary measures are taken," the Navy said.

Japan Faces Potential Nuclear Disaster as Radiation Levels Rise
“We are on the brink. We are now facing the worst-case scenario,” said Hiroaki Koide, a senior reactor engineering specialist at the Research Reactor Institute of Kyoto University. “We can assume that the containment vessel at Reactor No. 2 is already breached. If there is heavy melting inside the reactor, large amounts of radiation will most definitely be released.”

The U.S. government mobilized emergency resources to help Japan grapple with the developing nuclear crisis, dispatching a team of Nuclear Regulatory Commission experts late Monday, activating an atmospheric radioactivity monitoring center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Bay Area and rushing additional Navy ships to the region.
In the best-case scenario, the situation at the damaged reactors will take weeks, if not months, to stabilize, U.S. nuclear experts said.
"They do not have the situation under control," said Robert Alvarez, a nuclear expert at the Institute for Policy Studies and a former Energy Department official.
The company's acknowledgement that a "suppression pool" at the bottom of Unit 2, designed to serve as a last line of defense against a meltdown, was believed to have been breached could represent a major escalation of the crisis, said Victor Gilinsky, a former member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
"If that is true, then there is a path to the control room, the workers and the outside environment," he said.

It was just the latest setback in the effort to stabilize the plant, which has already suffered three reported explosions at its six reactors...

Possibly a bad development.
Large amounts of smoke is billowing from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. No official press release as to the cause.
Speculation is that it could possibly be another hydrogen gas explosions from either Reactor 3 or Reactor 4. Either way, not good. Although not active, Reactor 4 contains 20 years worth of spent fuel rods that can ignite if exposed to air.

So, you guys have followed this more than me. Maybe you know the answer to this. I keep reading that the backup generators were damaged. So, the plants couldn't pump fresh water in to cool the reactors.
So, in all these days of the crisis we couldn't get some new generators shipped in? There must be another problem there, but I haven't seen anything more than the generators being the base cause of the issues.

That is the official, somewhat simplified story, but no doubt on the scene it's much more complicated than that (like the tsunami broke things beyond just hooking up another generator). I have been on and off the story and pretty much always feel like no one quite knows exactly what's going on beyond the 50 people still on site.
And - maybe more importantly considering the Japanese Nuclear track record of misinformation, cover ups and cultural sensitivities to admitting mistakes - I can't say I trust anything that is related to the media outlets. If dangerous levels of radiation were streaming into the Japanese countryside right now I wouldn't be surprised if they'd put a lid on it thinking it's better to apologize tomorrow than admit failure today. It may be years before we really know.

Posted this on the RWED thread as well... Seems fairly informative.
3 separate cooling systems failed. The newer generation designs have cooling systems which would have kept working under these exact same scenarios.
Costly lesson to learn. Hopefully not a deadly one.

I did some math on this. According to Fick's Law, the flux of the concentrations and the diffusivity being the same, the only factor between the concentrations seen in surrounding regions after Chernobyl and the concentrations seen in the US after a theoretical containment failure like Chernobyl at these Japanese reactors should be the difference in distance. I calculated the first of the fallout would hit us eight days after the event, based on a report that it took 36 hours for the contamination to reach Sweden. I read that fallout 1000 km away from Chernobyl they found radiation in some boars at about 40000 Becquerels per kilogram, and from that I estimated the radiation in air about 48400 Becquerels per meters cubed. The distance between Japan and the US is 6000 km, so a good estimate for the fallout in America would be reduced to 1/6 of that, or about 7260 Becquerels per meters cubed. So we might end up with maybe 7260 Bq/kg in our system compared to the about 4400 Bq/kg which is normal.
So in Germany, where I pulled the Chernobyl fallout number from, there was about a nine month increased incidence of kids with Down Syndrome after Chernobyl, but they were getting six times the dose we'd be getting, which is twice our normal dose. This is still pretty minor, as calculating the dose-rate units from the activity rate for Iodine 131 here we get about 0.04 rad per hour. No where near the levels on the map.
Used a lot of fuzzy math for that, though, so don't quote me on that.

Fail. Just, fail. Not only do you blow up the containment, but this will take out the other reactors too. We're not even talking about radiation along the lines of an atomic bomb or Chernobyl anymore. We're talking about six or more Chernobyls.

The instruments I can only assume are inside the power plants. The spikes are associated with hydrogen explosions as the zirconium casing for the rods melted off, leaving the rods bare to each other.
The explosions then released radiation into the environment, which is the only reason I can think of why the readings would drop down again. So far, it's done this without fully breaching containment as far as I know, which is why the whole reactor cores aren't exposed yet (which would result in all the water flash vaporizing and kaboom and much more radiation which will not go away).

Operation to use helicopters to dump seawater into the reactors are underway. Due to radioactivity levels, the helicopters can't hover and can't fly very low. Most of the water is being dispersed rather than hitting the intended targets.

1 sieverts = 100 rems. 12,000 would be 120 rems.
Here is the effects it'll have on the body in rems.
5-20 Possible late effects; possible chromosomal damage.
20-100 Temporary reduction in white blood cells.
100-200 Mild radiation sickness within a few hours: vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue; reduction in resistance to infection.
200-300 Serious radiation sickness effects as in 100-200 rem and hemorrhage; exposure is a Lethal Dose to 10-35% of the population after 30 days (LD 10-35/30).
300-400 Serious radiation sickness; also marrow and intestine destruction; LD 50-70/30.
400-1000 Acute illness, early death; LD 60-95/30.
1000-5000 Acute illness, early death in days; LD 100/1

Latest update:
Efforts to cool down the reactors using helicopters to drop water was abandoned after 8 flights due to water being dispersed in the air before reaching its target. A total of nearly 200 flights were required, but was never made.
Efforts to cool down the reactors using 5 fire trucks armed with water cannons have also failed. The water failed to reach the intended target and the fire trucks have pulled back due to high radiation levels.
Efforts is now being made to restore power to the plant by running new power lines from the electrical grid. However, even with the restoration of power, the water pumps will have to be repaired first due to damages.

The helicopters... what a Fail. That seems so desperate an attempt for the very reason it didn't work - comparatively low volumes of water for the task, slow delivery, hard to focus, and off shore winds - that it has to be a big red flag that they would even try it. They are reaching.
The NYTimes this morning is even less optimistic. Today's paper focuses on how much worse US nuclear experts think the problem is than do the Japanese.
“We believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures,” Mr. Jaczko said (chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission).
His statement was quickly but not definitively rebutted by officials of Tokyo Electric, the plant’s operator.
“We can’t get inside to check (!!!!!!!!!!), but we’ve been carefully watching the building’s environs, and there has not been any particular problem,” Hajime Motojuku, a spokesman for Tokyo Electric, said Thursday morning in Japan.
Later, a spokesman for Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, Yoshitaka Nagayama, was more equivocal, saying, “Because we have been unable to go to the scene, we cannot confirm whether there is water left or not in the spent fuel pool at Reactor No. 4.”
Sss - what? So where's their optimism coming from?

I live 10 miles from a nuke plant, that I can see outside my window. 5 years ago when the dam hydro plant next door CAUGHT ON FIRE AND "COULD NOT BE EXTINGUISHED" the nuke plant had a "little emergency", due to loss of electricity for cooling water. This latest bit of news isn't good, but the US was likely right in setting the evacuation zone at a 50 mile radius.
Quote:
High radiation detected 30km from nuke plant
Japan's science ministry says relatively high radiation levels have been detected on 2 consecutive days about 30 kilometers northwest of the quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The radiation measured 170 microsieverts per hour on Thursday and 150 microsieverts on Friday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says the government will take appropriate measures if this level of contamination continues in the area for a long period. But he says this would be unlikely.
Radiation was measured for 2 hours from 10AM on Friday at 18 spots in areas 30 to 60 kilometers from the plant in Fukushima Prefecture.
The highest reading of 150 microsieverts per hour was detected at around 1:30 PM local time, about 30 kilometers northwest of the plant. The location is within the zone where residents have been instructed to stay indoors.
Readings of 170 microsieverts were recorded at the same location at 2 PM on the previous day, Thursday.
Experts say exposure to this amount of radiation for 6 to 7 hours would result in absorption of the maximum level considered safe for one year.
The ministry also observed radiation levels of 0.5 to 52 microsieverts per hour at other observation points within a 30 to 60 kilometer radius of the plant. It says these levels are all higher than normal, but not an immediate threat to health.
The government has evacuated residents living within a 20 kilometer radius of the plant, and instructed those in a 20 to 30 kilometer radius to stay indoors.

The ministry is full of it - Yuriko, despite the protestations of both her family and myself, returned to Japan from Italy, and according to the geiger counter she brought with her, the radiation is both stronger than the ministry is admitting, and has covered a longer range, as she has encountered great difficulty in finding a safe route through the chaos because of this.
Admittedly, she could be reading it wrong, but as smart as she is, I doubt it.

Latest update of the Fukushima reactors from REUTERS. I know the Japanese say that we here in the US are hyping everything, but one have to admit. When looking at the report below, it really doesn't look good.
Quote:
TOKYO | Tue Mar 22, 2011 8:54pm EDT
(Reuters) - Following are main developments after a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated northeast Japan and crippled a nuclear power station, raising the risk of uncontrolled radiation.
- Nuclear plant still emitting radiation but source unclear, says IAEA. The UN atomic watchdog says Japan has not given some information relating to one reactor.
- Smoke and steam seen rising from two of the most threatening reactors, No.2 and No.3, at the Fukushima nuclear plant on Tuesday, denting hopes of immediate progress in bringing them under control.
- Core of reactor No. 1 also a worry with temperature touching 380-390 Celsius (715-735 Fahrenheit), plant operator says. Reactor built to run at a temperature of 302 C (575 F).
- Engineers have re-established power cables to all six reactors and have started a pump at one of them to cool overheating fuel rods. Lighting had been restored at one of the control rooms, local media said.
* Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan says people should refrain from consuming leafy vegetables from Fukushima prefecture and tells the governor of Ibaraki prefecture to hold off on shipments of raw milk and parsley due to the nuclear crisis.
- Japan's health ministry says it has detected above-safety level radiation in 11 types of vegetables from the Fukushima area where the nuclear plants are located, Kyodo news agency reports on Wednesday.
- The World Health Organization said on Tuesday the detection of radiation in food is a more serious problem than first expected, and food contamination is not a localized problem. It says, however, there is no evidence of contaminated food from Fukushima reaching other countries.
- Plant operator TEPCO says a small trace of radiation had been found in the Pacific nearby, but officials stressed the levels were minute and posed no immediate danger.
- Miniscule numbers of radioactive particles believed to have come from the crippled nuclear power plant have been detected as far away as Iceland, diplomatic sources say. But the tiny traces were far too low to cause any harm.
- China and South Korea say they will toughen radioactivity tests on imports of Japanese food, and Japan tells four prefectures near the nuclear plant to halt shipments of spinach.
- Government also bans milk shipments from Fukushima province. Japanese food produced outside the nuclear crisis zone is safe.
- Official death toll from earthquake and tsunami exceeds 9,000, Kyodo news agency reports national police as saying.
- The government estimates the total damage from the quake will reach 15-25 trillion yen ($185-308 billion), the Nikkei newspaper reports.
* TEPCO, the crippled plant's operator, may eventually require more than one trillion yen in financing to help it overcome the disaster, Jiji news says.

Neutron beam observed 13 times at crippled Fukushima nuke plan
Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11 quake-tsunami disaster.
TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant’s No. 1 and 2 reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02 microsieverts per hour and that this is not a dangerous level.
The utility firm said it will measure uranium and plutonium, which could emit a neutron beam, as well.
In the 1999 criticality accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant run by JCO Co. in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, uranium broke apart continually in nuclear fission, causing a massive amount of neutron beams.
In the latest case at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, such a criticality accident has yet to happen.
But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and plutonium leaked from the plant’s nuclear reactors and spent nuclear fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear fission.

Richard Lahey, who was head of safety research for boiling-water reactors at General Electric when the company installed the units at Fukushima, told the Guardian on Tuesday workers at the site appeared to have “lost the race” to save the reactor.
“The indications we have, from the reactor to radiation readings and the materials they are seeing, suggest that the core has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel in unit two, and at least some of it is down on the floor of the drywell,” Lahey said.

They probably should have entombed it right when explosions started removing parts of the containment buildings. This goes back to my idea of why don't they build nuclear power plants underground, possibly dug into the bedrock. Pipe in groundwater from outside the bed rock, then, if it goes haywire, evacuate everyone via mine shaft or elevator then collapse it.

Prevention is worth a trillion-dollar cure...
Once meltdown starts it cannot be entombed in concrete, because the nuclear reaction will continue and explode.
Only cure after meltdown is to detonate a bomb inside each reactor building, to throw the fissile material so far apart it cannot react.
Chernobyl was a dry reactor with an explosion which stopped the reaction. Fukushima is a wet reactor where meltdown never stops...

Yeah, but at least if it's in the bed rock and you collapse it you limit impact to groundwater and air. It's why when someone tests a nuke they drill into granite stock to detonate. The only concern you have there is if the blast triggers an earthquake on a nearby fault, but that's easily solved by something else I've been saying: don't build in earthquake zones.
As I see it the possible impacts are worse than the meltdown itself, so you ought to build your plant right off to limit that impact. Put in all the safety measures you want to stop the meltdown, fine. But nature and Murphy's law will find a way, so when you're designing and building treat it like it WILL happen, even if the risk is low.

I've decided that we don't have any business messing with nuclear anymore, I was open to it before this, thought maybe we could make it work, after all France does it fine. But I've changed my mind. I understand our curiosity and experimentation with it back when, we didn't know what would happen and wanted to figure it out. But we know now that it is a force beyond our control, it is a powerful and, quite frankly, twisted force. Having your face melt off and not even feeling it? That's twisted. I've made my decision, we checked it out, we used it, we learnt what it could do, and now I want us to be done and not mess with stuff beyond our control, because we really can't control it, we thought we could but we just can't. Sounds extreme I know, but that's the conclusion I have come to for myself. I guess if someone thinks its safe then they can do it, but I will have no part in encouraging it.

"12 years ago workers were exposed to such a criticality, and 2 were dead within 7 months. The workers now are not being supplied with dosimetry meters...But we at Fox News have been issued one."
Neutron Blue Beams Shooting From Fukushima Reactor
By Gary Jacobucci
4-4-11
Neutron 'blue beams' can now be seen shooting from one of the damages reactors night and day.
"International nuclear experts believe that melted fuel is causing a small, uncontrolled chain reaction there sending out a burst of heat, radiation and a blue flash of light what the nuclear industry calls a localized criticality. From what we understand, this is not good news for the workers trying to prevent a nuclear meltdown there."
One person gave this reflection on blue beams He was a medical student when the nuclear reactor was installed at UT. The joke on campus was that the good news was that they had an ultraviolet detector that could pick up this type of radiation leak - the bad news was that if you were in a position to detect these 'blue beams' that you were going to be dead in a few weeks.
Besides improvements in nuclear power generation like supercharging the uranium fuel in the reactors with plutonium (MOX fuel), radiation is finding more applications in medicine.
In addition to irradiating parts of the body where cancer is found, one fellow here in town had radiation injected into his blood stream for a diagnostic from a high tech piece of equipment at the Elko Hospital. He was told it would be fine, but to stay away from his children for a few days. When they couldn't get the machine to work right for the diagnostic, they told him he would have to go through the procedure again (he said no).
The FDA pushing for the irradiation of food to keep us safe of course.
http://www.activistpost.com/2011/03/codex-alimentarius-irradiated-food
.html
The FDA acknowledges the fact that irradiation changes the makeup of food when it says in the same proposal that "Irradiation has various effects on foods that may cause changes in the characteristics of the food. Such changes may occur in the food's organoleptic, nutritional, or functional properties that would not be noticeable at the point of purchase but could be apparent when consumed or cooked."
The USDA allows irradiation of food and calls it "electronic pasteurization" so as not to alarm consumers. An official with the USDA who helped to ease food radiation restrictions now is with the UN doing the same with international guidelines. Many scientists believe that irradiation causes genetic and molecular changes that increase the risk of cancer in those who consume the food.
Then there are nuclear weapons. There are the heavy bombs and the ideology of M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) which also keeps us safe.
And now we have the use of depleted uranium. Prior to the War on Terrorism, it was thought to be a crime against humanity to spread nuclear waste on an enemies nation due to the long term toxic effect it would have on future generations.
But when it was found that the elements in depleted uranium could penetrate armor like nothing else, the toxic effects were no longer a concern.
DU ignites upon firing, filing the air with microscopic irradiated particles on both the giving and receiving end of the munitions.
Aside from destroying the health of the soldiers, the DNA mutations are passed into the womb...

The use of nuclear, atomic, radiological, etc. is M.A.D. and will be our demise on this planet if we continue down this path.

Tokyo (CNN) -- Japan began dumping thousands of tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean on Monday, an emergency move officials said was needed to curtail a worse leak from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
In all, about 11,500 tons of radioactive water that has collected at the nuclear facility will be dumped into the sea, officials said Monday, as workers also try to deal with a crack that has been a conduit for contamination....
