"Jaynestown" at the end. . .I get get a little choked up when Mal is trying to explain to poor Jayne why someone actually felt him worthy of sacrifice. I work with kids, and when they face loss. . .especially for the first time. . .I'm one of the ones they always want to come to for an explanation.

"The Message". . .Tracey's death and the end of the episode kills me every time. The whole 'losing a war buddy' thing.

I think it's all in River's voice in "OiS". The pain and hurt - the looks on the faces of her crewmates when she drags their fears into the light of day.

And the moment Wash tells Zoe to 'run' in "War Stories".

The Message - about the last third of it starts me weeping. And I despise Tracey. Just do not like him at all. But it's the music, and the look on Mal's face as they end the episode. Always has me crying like a baby!

Well, I'm a middle-aged guy so what makes me cry is little girls being brave; if you need the mechanism explained, just ask any parent who's been to the school concert/play. So, it's River in Serenity and it's River in Safe and it's River in Ariel and it's River in War Stories and it's River in Objects in Space and it's River ... well supported by the nuanced performances of Glau and Maher, but mostly it's River

I think the one scene that really gets me is Mal & Zoe carrying Tracy's body off of Serenity when they reach his family's home planet. I am a vet and I have lost friends in the service, so that scene just really hits pretty close to home for me.

"The Message" when Tracey is shot and dying and he repeats the "when you can't run, you crawl," bit.

Also "Out of Gas." Two moments. When everybody has just left and Mal is walking through the ship closing all the doors behind him, that moment with the music and directing and of course acting is amazing. Also another heart string tugger is when the guys who tried to take Serenity are leaving and the guy says "You woulda done the same," and the delivery of the line "We can already see I haven't," was just SOO perfec.t

Must agree. The final scene in "Out of Gas" was when I went, "I'm not a gay man, but I think I love Mal." And of course, all things Firefly, meaning the rest of the crew, and in a very abstract way, the infirmary. Because if a show can make me shed a tear or multiples, it's got me.

Also without a doubt, River's "I'll be your bounty" scene in "Objects in Space," Kaylee in the scene with Jubal, the end of "The Message"...and Inara shatters my heart into tiny pieces during her crying scene in "Heart of Gold," because it's just...I mean, come on.

Also, while the end scene of "Jaynestown" doesn't water my eyes, it does pull at me. And as strong as that scene is, the soft, almost painful reprise of "The Hero of Canton," along with that shot of Mal and Jayne standing there alone...just skyrockets it to another level, in my opinion. I'll watch that episode just to hear that piece of music.

Well, it takes a lot to get me crying, so htese are the ones that would make me cry if I were more emotional. Or maybe not. They pull at me though.

Serenity- Where Mal tells Simon that Kaylee's dead. I know she's not, but it still makes me want to cry.

The end of Ariel, with Simon and River.

The end of the Message, particularly the funeral.

The end of Jaynestown, when Mal and Jayne are talkng.

And I think that's all I thought of. And if that sentance sounds odd, it makes sense to me.

A good combination of a heartbreaking scene and wonderful music...that gets me every time. The end of "The Message" does it.

And not something that makes me cry, but one of the few times I've ever been shocked at a snippet of TV show dialogue: When Jubal asks Kaylee if she's ever been raped in "Objects in Space." That one line scared the hell out of me.

So many have already been mentioned: End of 'The Message', Inara in 'Heart of Gold', "It's time to wake up" from 'Ariel', obviously... Oh, and what gets me about the Jayne-Mal conversation from Jaynestown is the music in the background, the gentle reprise of Jayne's song in that soft guitar.

But here's an unpopular opinion! "Safe". The building of Simon's protectiveness for his sister all the way through, to that moment when he realises he can do nothing to stave off their ignorance, and "Light it". So much of Simon and River sets me off, and I blame my own big brother for that.

Gah!!!! Stop it Static, yer getting me all choked up with your story. How can I carry on my image as a cold hearted and diabolical IT guy when you've got me weepy at work?!?!

I'm suprised it isn't mentioned yet, but the scene from Trash where Simon has Jayne paralyzed and helpless in the infirmary. Simon assures Jayne that he will be safe no matter what he does.
The whole 'path of redemption' plot really gets me, and Simon's words were just what Jayne was needing.

How is this for strange, the Message is the one that was really emotional for a lot of folks, yet it didn't do much for me. I'm not arguing that it failed to have dramatic effect, I'm just not sure why I was so indifferent to that episode... Wierd.

Well, "The Message" really got me too, but for maybe a different reason. One, I was happy to see the little punk go, but the funeral was one more death in Mal's history. Mostly it got me cuz of that beautiful music. The composer did a really fine job on that one. The thing that really hit me though is the half a second scene where Jayne is taking off his hat in respect. It seems a little out of character, but the look on his face is pure sadness. Only time I've seen Jayne look like that through the whole series. It just got to me.

Simon and River. No question, hands down. More than once too. When River says she didn't think Simon would come for her,and he calls her a dummy.

Tracy's death scene too. Even though he tried to play them, in the end, he knew they would still stay true to their word and take him home. So many folks out there would say 'screw it ' and just dump his body out in space and be done w/ it. Makes me feel good that Joss chose to show some dignity with his characters.

*At first it was only in "Safe" when Simon hugged River just before she was going to get burned.
*The end of "Message". With the voice over, everybody looking sad, and Mal looking toward the camera. @___@ I'm thinking it's mostly Firefly's cancelation look right there and partly of the old war buddy's family mourning.
*End of "Objects In Space". From when River jumps from Jubal's ship and asks Mal if she's allowed to come back in to River and Kaylee playing Tacks

*Now to add to that is when Simon is explaining his story about River and him in "Serenity".

Ignoring the diatribes of our local Shakespeareans:

"The Message": You all have it wrong. The weepy part occurs when Mal says, "I just carried the bullet for a while." Or something to that effect. It makes me so weepy, I don't think I can even remember the quote correctly. Fillion's voice actually cracks, or whatever it does.

"Serenity": The end. Book: "I think I'm on the wrong ship" until that parting shot with the whore blessing the preacher. Oh dear!!

"Objects In Space": Kaylee's response to the rape question.

"Ariel": Jayne: "Don't tell 'em what I did."

Sometimes (read: most of the time) it's got as much to do with the delivery as it does the actual line.

These are a few of my favorite things...and please let's keep this thread confined to the topic and Shakespeare and NOT a place to try and impress people by dropping references to the Sound of Music.

I think its River and Simon in Safe..I'm a big sap when it comes to River and Simon scenes anyway its the one where they are going to try to burn her at the stake because the towns people who kidnapped them think she's a witch and Simon knows there is nothing he can do at that point to save her so he climbs up on the funeral pire so that he can burn with her...if she's going to die then he's going to die with her...

there are many others too....simon is this sweet guy ..but when it comes to his sister..there is nothing he won't do for her..it makes me melt everytime

My favorite part, even though i'm an agnostic, is the bit with the bible. Book tells River-

"You don't fix Faith, River. Faith fixes you."

He's talking about himself, but that also describes River's situation. Simon's faith that he can fix River and the leap of faith the crew is taking with River, as they learn more and more about her.

At the end of Heart of Gold when Inara says she's leaving.

There are many moments that are so well timed with the music, I tend to feel very open with this show.

The end of Heart of Gold, the dialogue between Mal and Inara.
War Stories, when Mal keeps Wash going, and later, the moment between Zoe and Wash, when he tells her to run.
Those are the big ones for me, I guess.

Like Static, I always mist up when Mal asks if everyone will still be there when he wakes up (though, unlike Static, I lack a profoundly moving back-story to my reaction!)

"Everybody dies alone." 'Nuff said.

At the end of "Serenity," when Kaylee rubs the engine and sighs, "that's my girl. That's my good girl." Not sure why, but I always find myself tearing up and grinning at that moment.

That little fiddle theme at the end of "Bushwhacked," as the Alliance cruiser is scuttling the derelict. Apart from being a lovely, haunting cue, it really reflects back on the horrifying, devastatingly sad fate of all the souls on that transport.

There are more I'm sure. But these are all I can think of right now, and I don't want to come across as too weepy!

As to the softie topic, I agree with just about everything mentioned here. Aside from that jerk Tracy. Sorry, I would have spaced his dead ass and, yes, missed that beautiful, moving music at the end of Message.

But the REALLY big one for me was River's surrender in Objects in Space, the "I'll be your bounty" speech.

It actually brought a single manly tear to the right eye of The Real Me...

Along with what looks like the best snow I can remember on screen, that's pretty much the way it struck me, on first viewing. However, after watching it with the commentary track, I can't see that scene without seeing the cast bidding farewell to the story, and to each other.

That really gets to me. I can't even write about it without feeling weepy.

I'm not quite sure if anyone has mentioned this specific bit yet, which faintly surprises me.

'Out Of Gas' - When Mal has the flashback right at the end of the episode, and the music kicks in, and you hear the jovial ship dealer talk about a real beauty of a ship, and the camera backs away from him to take in Mal, and you see him looking away off camera with this utter look of love at first sight - of joy and the realisation of dreams. It's such a heart breaking look, it's so beautiful. And then you see Serenity herself, sitting there, waiting for the right crew, and in the background the voice of the ship dealer saying, "Sir? Sir? Can you hear a word I'm saying?"

And you know that every hurt and every labour Mal went through for her was of a man deeply in love.

To me that was the most emotional bit of television I've ever experienced. And I include the 'Vaughan Rice considering putting gun in mouth due to being trapped in warehouse with four hi-tech coffins containing vampires with release timers counting down to dusk in 'Ultraviolet' - which is a near perfect emotional moment on television itself.

So, yeah. That's the bit that chokes me up everytime, and the bit I spend the bulk of my time pondering in a 'what happened next, what happened just before' kind of way.

And Static, you made me kinda weepy too. Sounds like you have something truly beautiful with your wife. You're a lucky man.

any scene with inara looking hurt or upset always pulls at the heartstrings a little bit. she reminds me of a great line from my so-called life, "you're so beautiful it hurts to look at you." it so sums up the effect she has on me. the pain in her eyes with the introduction of mal's new wife possibly gets me even more than the full on sobbing at him doing the deed with nandi.

for a specific scene though, the bit that got to me most in the entire series doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet. at the end of safe, the little bit of dialogue between mal and simon that runs along the lines of:

why did you come back for us
you're on my crew
but you dont even like us
you're on my crew

that gets me as close to weeping as anything i've ever seen. big manly tears mind.

All the scenes you guys mentioned are great, but one scene I didn't see on here was in Serenity: when Kaylee was shot and Simon is working on her, you see a shot of Jayne looking through the window, and he looks really concerned. I wouldn't say it made me teary, but I think it's a touching moment, and some nice insight into his character.

Hmm, I said to myself, Ultraviolet, never heard of it. It sounds super cool, so of course it's a UK show. Argh. Then I read there was a pilot made for US TV in 2001, for, of all networks, FOX, and it never made it to the air. Wow, shocker. It's doubly disappointing knowing that The X-Files vets Howard Gordon and Chip Johannessen were attached as executive producers. Sigh.

So I was watching Safe last night, and when Simon and River are having the conversation about how he gave up everything and found her broken - I was crying through that whole thing! For me, Safe is always the "forgotten" episode - I always forget how good it is, and I rarely watch it. But when I do - oh man! It always surprises me for some unknown reason.

What could be more hearbreaking than watching someone who has undergone incredible trauma, and in an achingly lucid moment, they acknowledge that they are "broken?" Sigh/sob...

And I really like the lighting in it.

Ok ok ok ok. So, I've become a BIG Jayne Cobb fan and a really big Adam Baldwin fan. But before I even knew either, when I saw that scene, for the first time, with Jayne peering in the window of the infermery... well... damn, something just caught in my throught. That's probably the moment I knew I loved Jayne. Awww.. the big sappy lug of a guy.

It is silly how emotional I can get over this T.V. show. With the exception of The Message(maybe I just dislike Tracy too much), I can agree with pretty much all the scenes that have been mentioned so far. I don't think anyone has mentioned the one scene that really gets me yet though. In the beginning of Serenity at the battle of Serenity Valley Mal says something like: "You hear that, that's our angels come to blow the Alliance to the hot place", then he gets the message to lay down arms and turns and his face is lit up by the devastating Alliance air strike that washes over the whole valley. This is the moment when Mal's heart breaks and he loses his faith.

Pirates don't cry, but if we did, I'd have to agree with just about every scene that's been mentioned.

However, for me at least, most of these moments elicit more of a revelationary (is that a word?) grin than a tearful reaction. Kinda like in "Objects in Space" when River says, "I'll be your bounty, Jubal Early," I'm sitting there thinking, "Well, there you go." As if to say, this person has resigned herself to an unenviable fate for the better of the people around her (as far as she's concerned), and has done it without hesitation or provocation. That's something.

Ultraviolet was the best 6 hours of British Sci Fi I've ever seen. Considering how short so many Fox sci fi series have been, would it have been better for most of them, from Firefly to Brimstone, had been created as miniseries? USA and the SCI FI have been going that route.

I've got to agree with almost everyone else and say the final scene in The Message. Every time I watch that, I start crying.

Also the last scene in Out of Gas gets me every time.

UltraViolet wasn't created as a miniseries. It was sold to be open-ended. However, the creator (Joe Aherne) couldn't find anyone else he'd trust to write for the show, couldn't find etc direct -- couldn't let go. He burned himself out writing & directing six episodes, and wrote an ending (with an opening for more) rather than let someone else work on it.

Wonderful show, but not the same sad story as Firefly. I've only bought three copies of UltraViolet.

All right... I wasn't going to admit this one...

Whenever I first heard the Salvaging Of The Red Button story -- I can't recall whether I first read it in an interview, or heard about it in the commentaries, or in a special, but it was probably the former... -- I was all weepy.

And so now, whenever they hit that moment in "Out Of Gas", with that "When your miracle gets here" line... I'm far and away.

Ya know, the first few times I watched "The Message" I thought it was good, loved the music and the ending scene with all the characters. But then Static gave his rendition of "You know the old saying..." and that got me thinking about all my Army buddies and how we had that kind of unsaid thing... and now I cant watch that scene without choaking up a bit.

OOG gets me with Mal's final words... and it keeps going for the fade into the used ship salesman and Mal's first glimps of Serenity.

My take on it: Here is a guy who is fresh from being a POW and goes and buys a ship so he can get away from the Feds and just get out "to the black" and never be under anyone's Yoke again. It gets me right in the ol' patriotic heart...

Another one that gets me is when in Shindig the mean girls are talking to Kaylee. I get that "aww, back off" feeling. But then all is made well by the gentleman who insults as only high brows can.

River when she comes out of the box and starts trying to tell Simon about how they came and tried to make her see and ... and... well, it just moves me.

Book at the end of Serenity... "I think I'm on the wrong ship..." yup... gets me there too.

Jayne and Mal in the final scene of Jaynestown... "I figure that everyone who got a statue made of 'em was some sumbitch or 'nother"

oh oh oh oh oh... the look on Wash's face when he realizes that Cap'n aint going with them in the shuttles in OOG... Alan is such a great facial actor.

That's about all for now. I should watch em all over again to catch all the emotional parts...

Ok, one more... "Ever been raped, Kaylee..." and the look of sheer terror on Kaylee's face...

Any touching scene with Simon and River will make me sniffle. The entire episode of Safe will get me going. Especially when they're getting ready to burn River and Simon sees no way to save her, so he climbs up onto the platform with her.

Another part of Safe that gets me is River's reference to Mal: "Daddy will come and take us home." And it's so clear that Simon thinks she's talking about their actual father who, in flashback, told him, "I won't come for you."

I cry at the drop of a hat, so I agree with all the above posts, but the one I don't remember seeing mentioned yet (unless it was blurred by weepiness) is on OoG when the two shuttles take off, and Mal walks slowly through the abandoned ship, and you see all the reminders of the missing crew as he methodically locks every barrier between himself and the people he cares about. And then he gets the old army blanket out of the locker, wraps it around his shoulders and looks out into the blackness of space... looking all stoic and strong and soooo alone. It just breaks my heart every time.

And on another note entirely,

STEVEthePIRATE, did you go to Harvey Mudd? Because otherwise your username is an astonishing coincidence...

Wow nobody has mentioned my two biggest heartbreakers.

First the end of Serenity
Mal: We're still flying.
Simon: That's not much.
Mal: It's enough.

I just found out about the series being over that evening before watching Serenity and this scene will bring me to tears every time.

I also get all teary over the scene in Out of Gas when they are discussing what to do about River and she is is standing there all alone in a dance pose listening. Her aloneness at that moment and the knowledge she has to have that they might not let her stay and they don't trust her must have been crushing.
