Hi, all:

Just wanted to drop a quick note about why I haven't been around much for the past couple of months.

My father-in-law was suffering from terminal colon cancer and eventually passed away about a couple of weeks ago. My wife, being an only child, was left with the responsibilities of having to take care of all the things that goes along with having a parent die, including the care of my distraught mother-in-law. Since my wife can't do it alone, I've been helping her out as much as I can.

To make matters worst, my mother-in-law has now been diagnosed with lymphoma herself. We're still waiting for test results to see what type of lymphoma it is.

Suffice to say, this has been a huge emotional and physical roller coaster for our family and pretty much our own lives have been put on hold so that we can deal with these unfortunate events.

I do occasionally check the site to make sure everything is still running smoothly, but is unable to do much more at the moment since I'm not home as we are over at my mother-in-law's.

Hopefully things will get better in the coming weeks and I'll be able to devote more time on the site.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know because some of you have been dropping me emails, messages, etc. wondering how things are going and where I'm at.

Will keep you all posted.

Best,
Haken

I'm sorry to hear about that. :( I know how difficult the whole estate settling business is, my mother is still working on sorting out and spliting up her mother's estate about six months later.

Hey Haken. Very sorry for your troubles. I'm currently dealing with something very similar with my girlfriends father at the moment. It's a tough and brutal experience. I wish you and your wife well in helping your mother-in-law find the strength to deal with her illness.

When you're ready, we'll all still be here.

What a mess. I am so sorry for you and your family's loss. Take care of yourselves. Be there for each other, love and understanding are things you'll surely need to both give and receive at this time. I wish I had something deeper and more profound to offer. I hope I helped just a little bit.

Been gone from this site a long time myself, sadly for very similar reasons. Just felt compelled to check in tonight for some reason, and saw your post. Please know that though time and chance should alter your world, you are not alone, my Firefly friend. And when the 'verse tilts back into place for you, all the lovely Browncoats will be right here.

I'm sorry for your family's loss and I'm glad that you're there to support your wife through all of this. Handling an estate is hard but losing a parent is way harder. And I hope that her mom has the strength to keep fighting.

Thank you everyone for your concerns and support.

Here's a bit of an update on the situation. Unfortunately, the test results for my mother-in-law came back and the lymphoma is in her bone marrow, which means it's stage 4. Her chemo will begin on Tuesday and we've decided to move her into our house so that we can better help her through her chemotherapy. Everyone I've spoken to who has gone through this have told me the first treatment is the hardest and will pretty much wipe her out physically. Anyway, that's the latest. Will post more as things come up. Again, thank you all for your support.

wishimay is right, Haken, this can take a huge toll on the caregivers. You and your wife will need to take some 'me' time over the next few months and let others look after mom-in-law.
