seems like all of us Browncoats ought to send the University e-mails and snail mails, advising the chancellor that we caught him cold violating a fundamental American freedom, and being stupid, and that therefore, we're gonnna keep an eye on him and the institution.

I commend this dude both for his taste, and his brass set.

I will say, just as an afterthought...Anything you put up for the general public to read must be well thought through...and be ready to put up with the idiots. Take any batch of comments from any news story on any given day and THAT is a sample of your viewership...

The other day some lady went bonkers because of the letters OMG on a billboard...Make no mistake, this is not a generally intelligent or tolerant society...

Maybe somebody should send her some screen-caps from Trash.
Meanwhile , any of you Browncoats from Wisconsin, keep an eye on the University, and in particular, keep an eye on this re-education they're going to do on free speech rights and responsibilities. Make sure it isn't privately " Your right to free speech stops where the University says no, and your responsibility is to not embarass the college when it does something DUMB."

That is a scary story: a university chief of police threatening criminal charges for putting up a Firefly poster. Glad it ended well. And yes, we have some pretty damn cool BDHs.

In light of the deaths at Va Tech as well as Columbine etc it was a ridiculously poor choice to make. There are all kinds of worthy quotes that could have been used. We have the right of free speech, doesn't mean we should always use it.

Isn't Mal's quote the exact opposite of Columbine and Virginia Tech?

Sort of, it will be a fair fight, and you'll have a chance to stop me. And I think it's implied, you'll be armed, even if I have to hand you a gun first.

The poster is inappropriate. Mal's intent is irrelevant. Perception is the problem. People will see a man with a gun talking about killing someone. They won't go any deeper then that. It is a distraction that the University could do without.

Excellent indeed, and it does give me a thought, since we're primarily a freedom-oriented folk, us Browncoats...

We ought to keep in contact with FIRE, and have ourselves a little FIRE-Fly palaver concerning the support of free speech in the educational environment, cause I am so down with that, and I don't just mean college professors, I mean everyone - since if a right isn't universal, it ain't a right at all, neh ?
