Serenity.... :D Damn, guess that ones already taken.
Interesting question though. I might call it something like Osiris.

I had a brown, dented '91 Mercury Tracer once. I called it "The Turd". Lovingly, of course.
As far as my ship: Final Destiny.
Long story there that would take one massive blog to explain, but in my experience, it fits like a glove.

Hmmm. I don't know, but here are some choices
- JoVan, for my other fan obsession.
- After a shero, like Makeda or Nsenga
- After a favorite character, maybe, but none come to mind
- But most likely I would name it after a virtue or attribute the ship called to itself, so I would ahve to know the ship to choose it (like courage, faith, insight -- hehe).
So I guess JoVan until the ship tells me it's name.

In our Firefly RPG game I was the owner/captain of a Firefly class transport. I named her Shenandoah after the Confederate commerce raider that never surrendered to the U.S. during the War Between the States. Figured it was fitting as I play a former Browncoat who never surrendered at the end of the War and now makes a living out on the Rim moving cargo, legal & illegal.

I'd name my ship 'The Police'. That way, when I open communications, I can say, 'This is the Police.' and get everyone freaked out.
Nah, in all honesty, I'd probably name it after something in a book, or maybe a particular SF author. It would also depend on the type of ship (exploration, smuggling, transportation liner, etc), what it looks like, etc. I once named a ship 'The King's Ransom' for a RPG, but I don't know if I'd go with that.

I named my car(s). I don't know what I would name my ship...that would take some serious thinkin'.
As for my cars though, my first car was a 1990 Toyota Tercel 2-door that I affectionately named "Duncan Mulder Car" after Highlander and The X-Files, respectively.
My current car, a 2002 Honda Civic coupe, goes by the name "Spike's Coat Car" a la Spike from Buffy and Angel because he's black and tough-looking.
And for some reason I prefer all my cars to be boys. I dunno why.

I had a 68 Chevy Impala that I called "the Land Shark", due to its large predatory demeanor and grayish color. My current car is just a honda civic with no personality, not worthy of a name.
I would name my spacecraft "Emily", for Emily Dickinson. I am quite fond of that lady, she knew the value of a good friend, and was quite an explorer even if she didn't leave her house much.

I think I'd name it "Sacagawea" or after a Native American warrior or chief.
My car's a Saturn named Zagnut. Was listening to Hell by Squirrel Nut Zippers and for some reason that type of music stuck on that car like Christine with the 50's music. Anyway, that early time period SNZ's is influenced by sorta swayed me to name it after the candy bar.

I've never owned a car (I never even bothered getting a driver's license), but it would never occur to me to name my car. Just as it's never occured to me to name my computer (and I've known some people who have). To be honest, if ships didn't already have an established tradition of having names, I have no idea if I would even name it. :)

Hmm, I used to drive a 1980 2 ton van. She told us her name was Bertha. And there was much rejoicing, for she was Ber-tha, the Ever-Living. Mum-Ra was her second cousin, once removed.
In roleplaying I've captained a ship called the Longshot, and I 'designed' two airships (using legos, I am the kwisatz haderach of dorks) called the Falcon and the Raven, the first for it's mostly grey color, the other being predominantly black.
I'm currently working on a sci-fi story/novella with ships called the Artemis, the Whitewing Pegasus, and the Ultima, and a mecha called Aegis.
I currently drive a 1988 Monte Carlo that wants to be called Skywarp.

Well I don't drive and I have no clue about cars in general (just not interested) but my missus has a tendency to call her car all sorts of names when it wont start
As for naming my ship. I always liked The Raven. I seem to have a thing with Ravens as it is also the name of my superhero alter-ego
Otherwise I suppose Phoenix would be quite a good one implying that no matter how many times we get shot down the darn ship just rises again!
Then Again maybe the Ebon Hawk due to my ongoing obsession with Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic.

In the Firefly 'verse, it'd be Firefly-class, called the Rufus T., after an ancient political leader on Earth That Was. I try to emulate him in my command style whenever possible. Or necessary.
Other universes. . . It'd depend on context, but in my SF writing, Earth's first few starships will be named after great artists & visionaries. The Roddenberry, The Whedon, The Da Vinci, The Hawking, The Einstein. . .

Yeah, that's my couple! I thought I lost my mind when I started hanging out here for Firefly. Now I know I am toast because I spend too much time talking about them. It is better than just something to do until the BDM comes out.

It's all synchronicity, because Nathan Fillian was one of the umpteen millino Joey Buchanon's -- the one who had the affair with Dorian.

79 mustang named "The High Beastess of Mustangs"
84 Merc. Topaz "Harcourt Justin Xavier Roderick Charlemagne the first" aka "Harcourt"
77 Thunderbird (pale grey) "Charcharodon Megalodon" aka "Meg"

In my Firefly Fanfic, the ship is called "The Oberon"
In a different Star Wars game, my YT-1300 is called "The Adventuress" - and if you want to see the floor plan I spent a long and boring day at work in a call center cutting and pasting and photocopying together, it's on the Star Wars page of my website.

I had a black Mercury Cougar XR7 (a Thunderbird SuperCoupe with a formal roofline), leather interior. I always felt it was the car that Darth Vader would have owned, had he bought FoMoCo products in the late 80s. Called it Jehu ("for, behold, he driveth furiously") until I sold it so I didn't get any more speeding tickets. Nice car.
I'd call MY ship the Golden Hindquarters, after Inara. Okay, okay, not really. Raphael Semmes? Jolly Roger? Cutty Sark? I have it! The Jubilation T. Cornpone, after a famous hero of the War Twixt the States.

I also had a 1980 Ford Granada (which is spanish for Fortress btw) and i called it Tank.. because it had proven it was so. i got in 3 wrecks in that car and by the time the transmission finaly died it still only had a crushed fender. It tore everyitnig from the radiator forward off a Honda Civic in a part head-on/t-bone collision wich i never even stopped for.. but the guy was turning against traffic illeagaly anyways. he got what was comin to him. no blinker either. I avoided another wreck, caused by a lack of blinker and probably avoided killing the old lady, by driving off the road and taking out 50 feet of fencce and barbed wire as well as a large chunk of blackberry bushes. The fender was crahed by a rear corner collision with an Aerostar. i crushed my fender.. he lost all the back and left side paneling on his aerostar.. that was my bad. i owned up to it. i ran a truck full of drunk redknecks off the road after the hit my car with a jack daniels bottle. SOB's couldnt drive thier truck anywhere after that.
I may seem like a calous individual, but the fact remains. i have only ever been at fault in 1 (or 2 if you look at it in a leagle sense) of the 9 or so accidents i've been in.
Quite frankly im sick of people who dont think before they drive.
somehow this got away from my car and onto my road rage issues. sory about the ranting kids. i get started and i just cant stop sometimes.

I told them they needed to name their ship, and they came up with "Mystic Dren". If you're familiar with Farscape you may be able to translate that. Basically, it means "Holy Sh!t".

All I know is I am on my way."
Is it time for a rousing chorus of "They Call the Wind Inara"?

...they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their
clothing - and if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

Lol!! 2 people, wow. More than I expected. Well, if you want to come to Dallas we might be able to work out a trade for goods or services. We could even watch some Firefly if my DVD player is working by then.....sigh
They call the wind Inara....sigh A good song made better. :)
I am not worried about the bullet with my name on it. Just the thousands marked "Occupant".

My car, a gorgeous but increasingly cantankerous fire-engine red 1990 Dodge Daytona, has only recently earned a name. Despite the fact that I adore the idea of naming vehicles, nothing ever seemed appropriate... This summer, however, it came to be called "The Mobile Queen," because it serves as the sole transport and portable lighting setup for my film company, Mobled Queen Entertainment, which in turn is named after a quote from Hamlet, so that the top of our main page can quote William Shakespeare as saying "Mobled Queen is good."
In the Firefly RP I'm running, the captain named his ship the Bao Chou, which he tells me is Chinese for "vengeance." I trusted him and didn't actually verify it, so I hope I've not just publicly made a fool of myself.
If I myself had a ship, I'd have to sit down for hours with a scratch pad to choose a name. Virtues, sci-fi references (Phoenix, Equinox, Lying Bastard, and the already-mentioned Long Shot, among many others), historical references, things that just sound cool (always wanted to name a ship "Lotus")... the possibilities boggle the mind.
In the Firefly 'verse, I'd call it Fortune, 'cause that's what every captain hopes for.

It would depend on a couple of factors. If it were a large ship, a la Star Destroyer-sized, I'd say Eclipse. If it were a mid-sized ship, a living space, possibly Endymion (Dan Simmons fans, unite!). If it were small, a dogfighter, I'd call it the Raven.
These are all assuming these are ships fully equipped with weaponry. A transport would be called Gatekeeper.

oo, my curiosity is sparked now. what's das simmons? i like the endymion story, so i'm curious to see how it got used in a pop culture kind of thing.
hmm, so what would i name my ship?
Vegdis - it's the name of a river in norse mythology. it means "knower of the way," which is the total opposite of what i believe, so ofcourse i was immediately fascinated by it. it's the inspiration for and the name of a character in the fantasy world i'm creating.
Melvana - as a reference to Rumi
Majnun - as a reference to the story of Layla and Majnun.

Dan Simmons wrote the following books:
Hyperion
The Fall of Hyperion
Endymion
Blade Runner 2
And a few others. He uses John Keats poetry, and many others, throughout the sci-fi/horror series of Hyperion (which is the name of a Keats poem). He uses seven intricate characters, each giving differently styled narratives throughout the story. There's a poet, a scholar, a soldier, a diplomat, a detective, a captain, and a. . .it's been too long, but I remember there was a seventh.
