What does it really mean to be a fan? We want to know what you think!
Please complete this short survey and help to construct a new psychometric measure that will assess fan identity specifically as it relates to media fandom. Thank you!

Went there. Did that.

Did you guys notice how many or how few of your answers were on both extremes?

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate you all's help. I know 52 items looks like a lot, but they're simple and it goes by pretty fast.
I need all of the responses I can get, so keep 'em coming. ;)
Thanks again!

My answers mostly stayed in one area, Wishy. Not much hopping around.

Filled it out, it was pretty quick. A lot of my answers were 5s a couple of6s several 4s, a couple of 3s one or two 2s.

<_< My inborn mistrust of psychology studies and prevalence of internet monitoring prompts me to ask what the purpose of this is.
Some of it seems geared towards suggesting that fandom results in loss of functionality to the same degree as psychiatric disorder, and also seems to be suggesting a comparison with OCD.
I also question why the linked webpage is not in the same directory as the usf psychology department's official site.

That's why I was asking how many one's or fives y'all put...
"Balance" and "fandom" don't necessarily go hand and hand, nor do they have to- and I don't necessarily care how I'm portrayed, but thought some of you might.
Then again, it could only help our casue if the rest of the world thought we were a more rabid fanbase than the other fanbases in the sandbox, so have at it.

I put lots of fives, and one or two sixes, without shame. While I was taking it I didn't feel like I was being unnecessarily probed or annalyzed. I don't know what others put, I guess the researchers will check it out and I wish I could see what their findings are. Special interests and passions are cule and make everyone unique.

Hey guys,
There's nothing to be mistrustful or suspicious of. Although, I understand why you'd be hesitant since it's a "psychology" study. There was no attempt to trick you in any way, and I am not looking to see whether fans suffer a psychiatric disorder like OCD or anything else. :) Regarding the link to the survey, USF's psych department routes surveys through Qualtrics (a survey creation and administration website like SurveyGizmo). None of our studies are ever through our department website.
Regarding what the study is actually about, we are just trying to make a new measure that assesses fan identification. The survey has been closed now (we reached our total), and now the items in the survey that you took will be examined for their mean ratings. We then will delete all items will low mean scores, reword the items in first person, and administer the measure again to establish reliability for the scale. In the end, the goal is to have a scale that measures to what extent a person identifies with their particular media fandom. For instance, in the final measure, a possible item may be something like "I think about my fan interest often", and a person would rate this item on a scale from 1 (strongly agree) to 5 (strongly disagree).
Thank you again to everyone who helped me out! As I said, the survey has now been closed. Thanks to you all, Part 1 of my thesis is finally complete! :) If you have any questions about the study, feel free to post here, send me a message, or e-mail me. Thanks again for your help!

Delete all items with a low mean score and re-administer?
Wouldn't that select for a high mean score?

Yes. We only want to keep the items that best measure fan identification.
