Ponder- what is the best thing, for you, about Fireflyfans.net?

For me it was meeting not only some of the best friends I've ever had ( and getting a chance to spend time with them at Dragon Con) but meeting my husband was the best part of here.
If it hadn't been for this place I would never have met my husband. We lived in different states and had very different lives with no chance of them intersecting.. and then we made friends here, met, fell in love, and now have a great life and a beautiful son:)

I just like the community. It seems like a vast majority of browncoats are very warm and friendly people. I haven't ever been a part of a fan community that is as respectful and welcoming as the browncoats are.

Second to that is because of fff.net I found out about the prescreenings in time to get in on the one in Austin. Nathan and Ron showed up. That was such an awesome event.

I'm so glad we have a new thread, that old one was too long.

My favorite thing about fff.net is getting to talk to fun nice people. Byte got me coming here a year ago and I've thoroughly enjoyed myself. Its also fun to learn from each other about things too, sure RWED is a place where most of us aren't going to drastically change our minds, but we can still learn from each other and I will admit that my opinions on some things have been better informed by being there, and yes, there has been a little bit of change.

In life I care about people, relationships of all sorts are what makes life worth living.

So, here's a ponder for ya. What do you think of people who have best friends turn into arch nemesisses? I have a couple friends who have each done this twice. It seems really strange to me. They go from being the bestest of friends to hating each other and of course blaming the other person for some horrible thing they did.

Would you be worried about being their friend? What would you think about their romantic relationships? Personally I'd be worried if I were in a relationship with someone like that. I've seen bitter divorces before. I wouldn't want to get caught up in one.

I'd agree Zeek. It's not a concern if they have a falling out with one friend. That happens. But falling out with multiple friends to the point of hatred... that says you have problems with people.

Its odd in real life, I mean we've all seen it in books and stuff, but when real people do it it seems weird. But maybe it shouldn't because love is a strong emotion and so is hate, so one could be swopped for the other because they are both intense.

The slightly creepy thing about it is that there's a piece of me that can see myself doing that if the conditions were right. I love very intensely, if someone has the title of best friend from me it means I love them very much and with great intensity, so maybe that intensity could be shifted. I don't know about hate though, I've never really hated anyone, but I've dispised a couple. Its something I try not to do though, dispise, but the older I get the more potential for hate I see in myself and it is sort of scary.

A good historical example. Temujin (Genghis Khan) had a blood brother Jamuqa, the two of them loved each other intensely, swearing bloodbrotherhood three times in their young adult lives, this is a big committment because it holds until one of you dies. Then fortunes turned, they both became ambitious, they both sought to widen their sphere of control and influence and in this process became rivals and even enemies, fighting in battles against each other. In the end Jamuqa's men betrayed him to the future Khan, a crime which Temujin punished promptly because no one likes a betrayer, no matter whose side they are on. Then Temujin took Jamuqa and they talked long, Temujin said they could start over (a very unGenghis like thing to offer), that their love for each other could be stronger than any of the trouble they'd had with each other. Jamuqa declined and asked to be killed in the honorable way of the time, because he would always be a thorn in his anda's side, he would always be the thing holding Temujin back from his destiny of Great Khan.

So that's the best story I know of best friends becoming enemies. Can you tell I have crushes on both of them?

I'm not a big Shakespeare fan but I definitely see the value in his plays and think its important for kids to study them at school etc. My favorite would have to be Hamlet, its dark and moody and intense and centers around big themes like revenge. Plus it has a touched charactor by the end which makes it the most interesting to me. I'm firmly in the "Ophelia didn't drown herself it was an accident, she wasn't looked after properly, don't those rutters know anything?" camp. I like how nearly everyone is dead at the end, now that's a play, the only person I really regret seeing die is Ophelia, that was totally preventable.

MSA, clearly we'll have to agree to disagree about the intentionality of Ophelia drowning.

Zeke, sorry for the spoilers. :) The thing I like about MacBeth is how its all about power, how it corrupts, a theme that resinates in any society and in any time. My good friend's daughter is Lady MacBeth in their class play tomorrow night so I'm really excited about going to see her perform. Unfortunately the play is abridged, but all the kids in her class are in it, so they have to shorten it since not all children are into acting or good at it. Its the fifth grade, which is when I first studied Shakespeare at school, so its neat to see our Jasmine doing it too.

I felt like Lady MacBeth was pretty much the big villain of the story. She pushes MacBeth and then the power gets to him. That and the Gargoyles cartoon did all sorts of tie ins to MacBeth. That cartoon was awesome.

We didn't have it in Indiana where I went to college. If I didn't go back to Illinois on break it would have been fine. It was a constant annoyance to try to remember if I was on the same time or an hour off depending on the time of year.

I'm really happy that we're back to being an hour ahead, it stays light later!!!!!

BTW my Jasmine did great in MacBeth on Wed. night, she did all her lines well and had lots of fun. She's the best ten year old Lady MacBeth I've seen. My little brother will be in fifth grade next year so that means he'll get to do MacBeth soon too! I think he'll get a non speaking part though because he hates acting.

I'm a bad person. The idiot guy on my team has a computer he uses to do work on. The computer has VNC which is a remote viewing/control program. I'm sitting here just watching him work. It's so painfully hilarious. He's the slowest software engineer I've ever seen. He was looking for a numbered file that is sorted alphanumerically. He kept scrolling up and down and not finding the file for a good 5 minutes. It was ridiculous. We all gathered around the screen laughing. So many times we wanted to just move the mouse for him and select the file. At least I'm not the only bad person in the office.

I LOVE daylight savings time - just not the first week when I'm getting used to it again.

I truly hate the wintertime - it's dark when I drive to work in the morning and dark when I drive home from it. It's so depressing.

At least now I have an extra hour of light to do things after work. Personally - I wouldn't change back to standard time in November at all.

It's not just watching the screen it allows you to take control of the mouse and keyboard as well. Technically he's using the program as well. We have it setup so multiple people can connect at the same time. There are different programs that do this but a simple one is realVNC http://www.realvnc.com/

Though I'm sure you're right that he'd be upset if he knew. It doesn't hurt that the managers in our area are both on vacation right now. So, it's not like we're going to get caught really.

Sadly one of the managers was just online this morning trying to catch one of his employees to tell him not to waste time working with the guy on my team. So, he asked me to pass along the message. How sad is that? A manager spends time on his vacation trying to keep this guy from distracting his employees. Lame.

We use the remote view/control program in school as well. During computer lab time it lets me see if all my students are working on the project, stop them if they go to sites they shouldn't, make highlighted notes or corrections on their papers... I quite like it.

ok that is truly sad Zeek... it'd suck not to be able to enjoy your vacation for fear when you got back everything would be late or messed up because of one employee

I've been a bad FFF member. I haven't really checked in on this site at all for ages. By the look of things I'm not the only one who hasn't been checking in regularly.

As for the latest ponderable, I think daylight savings time is probably still useful. As someone who regularly interacts with his friends in other timezones though, I sometimes think it would be nice if the whole world was just in one timezone. Sure, certain areas will spend the majority of their "day" in darkness and their "night" will be lit. But eventually that will cycle it's way around. It can be something to look forward to for future generations.

Guess I missed it. Fell asleep. Man, I dunno what's up with me lately. I'm always exhausted!

Oh! And to answer the first question from MsA; FFF.net was kinda the doorway to meeting some of my very best friends. So this place means a lot to me, as does Firefly as a fandom. Still wear my Serenity necklace regularly to remind me how much I love being a Browncoat.

Ok, so today I have the day off and I'm gonna get some things done. I'm a lil angry, I've been waiting for a good real Spring... and it's gonna be 80 for the next 3 friggin' days. BAH! I hate the heat!!! Just makes doing things all... sweaty. :/ And not the good kind of sweaty! Boooooooo!

Hmmmm... What FFF has meant to me...

I've met a lot of really awesome people here. Had some great times, some not so great.

At the end of the day it's either the best thing that's ever happened to me, or the worst. I usually lean towards best though, not sure I'd be as happy as I am now without it.

Ha, I'm glad you do, it's usually where I go when I'm back on this site. This was one of the first internet communities I was on, I think I joined back when I was still in high school. I kind of haven't been on so much since then, but this is a very nice site and an awesome community.

I have a general wondering, that is about meeting people that you know on the internet. I have never done so, the idea always made me a bit uncomfortable I suppose even though I have good friends that I know only through the internet. For those who met people through forums and sites, what was it like? Was it weird for you?

My favorite is A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is just fun and everyone ends up happy. Romeo and Juliet always bothered me because of, well, Romeo was a bit of a whiny pansy and the tragedy sees somewhat contrived. Like, the tragedy was all from a misunderstanding. I didn't like it.

Macbeth is great too. That is a good tragedy complete with creepy witches and descents into madness and awesome battles.

The first time I did it, it was pretty weird. Not a bad weird, but just weird-weird. It was rather surreal to be sitting in the same room with all these people who I had gotten to know as text on a page and they had faces and voices. Even if we had skyped or something, just being close enough to touch was strange. It was great though.

The first time I went to Dragon*Con, I was cautious. I was staying at a different hotel from others, and I had my own room not shared with anyone I hadn't already met. But people were all pretty much exactly as they came across online. So meeting in person just brought most of us closer still and cemented the warm and fuzzy feelings.

I'm sure it doesn't always go that way though. There probably are axe murderers out there.

My first meeting was when I went to visit with LittleAlbatro's family. I was quiet at first, but she made me feel so at home. MsA and NVG were the first people I met at Dragon*Con. It was odd, but they were so friendly and inviting that I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Though NVG scared me a lil, I felt so small next to him, hehe! Getting to know everyone was great. Fav Shakespeareian comedy? Much Ado About Nothing for me, hands down. Also got to play Hero in a high school play. I remember the guy who played Claudio tried to French me during the kissing scene, so bit his lip, lol! Ahhh, to be a bratty lil teenager again.

I've met several people from online, its allright. I've never maintained a relationship for long with someone I've met, except hooking up with my local Browncoats group here. But the only way I can get dates is with guys online so its worth it when I get frustrated about not going on dates. I've also talked to people on the phone from online a bit that's fun. I have one friend with whom I'm close from online and we talk on the phone sometimes.

Oh Roxy! We'd just eat you up with all your epic cuteness and fun spirit. Personally, I tend to scare/excite so many that I meet. That feeling is usually mutual and fun times are had by all. Stylish comback, stylishly late!! Anyone miss me?

I notice we're talking about the first FFF.net folk we met in real life... I have to say it was Verse Explorer who lives in Arizona, but on the basis of our friendship here on FFF.net she booked a one week trip all the way to Melbourne & we were like 2 peas in a pod! She is, & always will be my Kaylee-clone! Such a precious friendship, which has been growing ever since! Vex has also visited me here in London & I have spent time with her on 3 occasions at D*C! So precious to find that down time to just be with someone who is so very special to me!

Going to Dragon*Con was amazing!! Being met by Jimi-bear AKA RiverismyGoddess, who literally picked me up, alongside Ken (who's online name escapes me at the moment) & Birddog at the Airport in Atlanta, & also Canter who had arrived from South Africa the day before me! Spending time with Jimi & his boys in Georgia... spending time with his parents, as well, whom I still count as friends... then Dragon*Con was incredible! Phoenix Rose, with whom I had spent hours on the phone, literally glomped me in the foyer of the Hyatt! The Scotts, Navy & AB Mick!

That was so amazing - it felt so natural & right to hang out with folk I'd never met in person but with whom I was completely at ease after long time spent getting to know each other online! My first trip to the USA! Hanging out with my li'l sister, MsA & her wonderful NVG!! Sharing beds, as Roxy mentioned!! Drinking rum! Eating the rich, generous servings of American food! Most of all just being with people I felt I was family with!

I've met folk from around Australia, the UK & all over the USA through this fandom! I have additional family in New England after a 2 year relationship with Naughtyman, from FFF.net & I'm God mother to NVG & MsA's precious little browncoat boy! I have found "twin brothers" who share my birthday (give or take a year or two) & I have visited & stayed with browncoats from FFF.net who wouldn't have dreamed of just letting anyone stay with them! Mavoureen, ummmm Erin, who's online name I forget as well, sorry & of course Little Albatross! Some of my dearest friends in the world are people I first me on FFF.net! Can you all believe it's 10 years today since this site launched! Haken has done an amazing job!

My favourite Shakespeare comedy is also Much Ado About Nothing, but I was in a great production of A Midsummer Night's Dream once & I also have a special place for that in my heart!

Spring break sucks.

Anyway here's one for you guys. There's this friend of a friend here who's awful with money and seemingly delusional. She is a stay at home uh...aspiring author I guess. Her husband works crazy hours and they just barely squeak by. Anything unexpected that comes up usually throws them into panic mode. Anyway the recent drama is that they move apartments every year because the complexes usually try to raise your rent if you want to stay. So, she's come up with the genius plan of buying a house to avoid the rent issue. She seems to think they can get a house under 200,000 with a $500 mortgage. They plan to "save" for a year to make the down payment. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell they're saving 20% of 200,000 in a year. If they go crazy they might be able to save 7,000 but even that will never happen. My friend suggested to her that if she really wants to buy a house that she probably needs to get a job. She threw that out saying they can afford a $500/month mortgage and they already have a plan to save the down payment.

Would you say it's best to just let stuff like that go and not worry about it? Let them figure out it's not going to happen on their own? She clearly doesn't want to hear about the flaws in the plan or any other plan that's more likely to succeed.

Zeke, they'll figure it out on their own, it may seem obvious to you, but it sounds like they will get it eventually even without direction. You could always express vague doubt and leave it at that, that way you've planted the seed so to speak without raining on their parade.

Sorry guys it's been a hellish week here.
My grandmother died on Monday, on Wednesday one of my co-worker's 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and today I get to be in the first round of mediation because a parent is suing us.

Zeek- nope some people live in dreams so much they don't want to even visit reality. It's likely she gets super defensive because she knows that her plan isn't and won't work, but if she faces that she has to face the fact that she's wrong and she needs a job etc... some people suck

The parent suing us is like that. She doesn't want to hear that her bad parenting and her kids lazy irresponsibility is the cause of her problems. She wants us to be at fault so she's pushing forward even though it's ridiculous to blame teachers for a kid's tardies and truancies.

New ponder: Can you save seats in a theater or not?

We got into an altercation at midnight avengers. We had 8 tickets and were saving two blocks of 4 seats. Someone decided that wasn't cool and sat down in the seats anyway. I could see it if we didn't have the tickets, but we already had the seats purchased and we got there to save them.

It was funny cause at this theater they serve food during the movie and our waitress said if we had the tickets we could save them. Then the dude showed up who took our seats and she was like "oh yeah I can't do anything about that". So why'd you say we could save them?

We decided to let it go considering there were still seats in the row right in front of us so we ended up 4 in one row and 2 in the row behind and 2 in the row in front. Though I'm pretty sure we could have gotten them kicked out. They have a policy if people are talking that you can have a waiter or waitress kick them out. 8 people all agreeing that they're talking loudly is probably enough to get that taken care of. Don't be a jerk when you're outnumbered.

I don't think it's set in stone. If said people aren't there and the theater starts getting crowded, then all bets are off. Seeing as how you had the tickets and there were other seats available, I'd say you were fine holding the seats. See in Utah they solved that problem. It's reserved seating. So when you buy your ticket it reserves a specific seat. So you buy early and you can buy the whole block. It saves a lot of embarrassment if you have chronically late friends. You don't have to try and block off seats while people give you dirty looks..

Zeke, I will never patronize an establishment like the one you describe because I need to talk, and be talked to, in the theater, we try to do it quietly but its just how it has to be. I would not knowingly give money to people who would consider kicking me out. I wonder how many theaters I'm giving money to who would do that to me?

As for saving seats though I see no problem with it, I couldn't care less if people do it. Ya gotta look out for you and yours in life.

That would be a good idea. I assume it's a complete win for the theater. I mean they probably sell tickets super quickly when they go on sale.

So, MSA do you remember a long time ago you posted a recipe for chicken pot pie? I'm finally going to try it out this weekend. My family is coming to town over memorial day weekend and I'm trying to think of something I could make for them. So, I'm trying a test run. Wish me luck.

Oh and I assume the chopped up chicken should be cooked already right? Well that's my plan at least. I doubt it will get too dried out that way even if I'm wrong.

Turned out pretty good. It was spicier than I expected. I'd probably cut back on the red pepper in the future. Also the crust wasn't easy to figure out. It came in like little biscuit shaped thingies. I put those on a pan for a little while until the poofed up enough that I could cut them in half. Then I just sorta arranged them across the top. Didn't really cover everything but it worked well enough. Also I didn't know if I should cook the potato first or not. So, I boiled it for a little while. Turned out just right IMO. Overall I think it worked well and I'd make it again.

Jeez HIMYM is really taking their pent up aggression out on marriage aren't they? Ted gets left at the alter by Stella. Zoe gets a divorce for Ted. Victoria leaves her fiance at the alter. Barney clearly doesn't go through with his engagement to Quinn. What the heck?

I liked seeing Victoria again. I just wish they didn't throw in the part about her ditching her fiance at the alter.

I fully expected that bride to be Robin. I'm kinda glad because I don't think the actress who plays Quinn has very good comedic timing.

Ted sure is becoming more and more of dbag isn't he? I'm really getting tired of his character making bad decision after bad decision. Could we get sweet Ted back please?
