FOX is the only one who'd accurately report the news. And that annoys Kwickie, greatly.

Except that studies show that Fox viewers know less about current events than people who watch no news at all. People who watch The Daily Show are better-informed and can answer more news questions correctly than Fox viewers, and that annoys Rappy, greatly.
The truth always does.

Is there a YouTube clip of it? Because Wulfie doesn't read; he gets his info only via vidclip.

Poor, deluded Wulfie.
He tries, he really does. But he doesn't even understand his own refrences enough to get that he undermines himself.
In this case, in the story which he refrences - there really were four lights - it was the claim otherwise that was propoganda.
So, yes, Wulfie - you're right. The librul media (I have to chuckle at the simplicity of those who buy that) says there are four lights - because there really are four lights.
You're adorable. Does it hurt, being that stupid?

It's not 'simplistic ' for anyone to acknowledge that the media are indeed Left leaning. I find it funny that those who deny such feel the need to insultingly claim that anyone who says the Media are liberal to be 'simple'.
There ARE four lights. The media is trying to tell us that there are only 3 lights. And as strong and proud as Jean-Luc Picard is, even he, at the end, admits that he was on the verge of agreeing with his captors, and saying there are only 3 lights.
Funny how you don't get that, Storybook. Guess the message was missed on you. Pity.

Funny that you don't seem to get that your beloved FauxNews *IS* part of "the media". In fack, they and Murdoch are among the biggest parts of the media.

Excellent, Riona (and Magons, for catching it first). It WOULD be Wulf who would only know about the Star Trek version. As with so many morality tales and great movies, and as just about every long-running TV series did, Trek stole the concept from 1984 and ran with it:
Everything old is new again (and Wulf only finds out about it through his love of "heroes"). I kinda like that they do that, as it always brings things back to the conscionsness of the new generations things which previous generations got. I kinda resent the simplistic way they do it sometimes, or how they bend it, but I never minded immediately recognizing where a plot came from.
Of course, the irony IS that the right's favorite "news media" is actually a propaganda tool of Murdoch and the right itself, as has been shown over and over and over. Other media certainly does the same thing, but not to the blatant degree FauxNews does, and THEY usually get called on it and someone gets fired. Righties only watch FauxNews for the most part, so they buy into the "four lights" far more than anyone else, so to use it as an example against the left is hilarious.
Also, of course, the concept has nothing to do with media, but with torture. So is he trying to say the "left-wing media" is TORTURING people into believing there are four lights, or four fingers? Kind of a weird comparison; I think if he'd really tried, and had anything but his vast store of fiction to pick from, he could have done better.
Wonder what Raptor's "never mind" means? Did he realize where the plot actually came from, or that Wulf isn't making a point about indoctrination, but about torture?
All in all, just a thread for our righties to jump on and agree with each other and slap each other on the back, which is why I ignored it, figuring "let them have their fun", until Riona brought up the original. Well done, Riona!

Where can one see this ' FAUX ' news of which you speak ? Is it sorta like The Onion? I've heard of FOX, which matches the description of what Robert Murdoch owns. Unless your typing skills truly are so poor, where as you meant to type FOX instead of FAUX, or 'in fact' instead of 'in fack '?
Yes, FOX news is a small part of the media. And one which hasn't been around for very long, unlike CBS,NBC, ABC, The NYTimes, LA Times, or even CNN.
And Cavetroll, funny! As CNN was founded in Atlanta, which is also the home office of Coca-Cola, it figures they'd prop up Pepsi.
And Niki, I pity you if you think that the rest of the MSM is NOT propaganda for the Left.

Good catch on the typo. That's one in a row for you.
But who is Robert Murdoch? Is he Rupert's smarter brother? Or are your typing skills so poor that you meant to type RUPERT instead of "Robert"?
When I refer to FauxNews, I am of course talking about your beloved "FOX". And yes, it's sorta like The Onion, in that they use actual words to describe things. The Onion tends to be closer to the truth in most cases, though. Research shows that those who watch Fox are less informed about current events than those who watch no news at all, and a good deal less informed than those who get their news from The Daily Show.
But since they're entirely slanted to the right, of course you find them to be the only reliable news source. Well, until you have to backpedal and claim that they aren't "news" at all, but "entertainment".

"A small part of the media," and "one which hasn't been around for very long." Great. So you're saying you give a pass to MSNBC and Huffington Post, right? After all, compared to Fox, they're even smaller, and also haven't been around very long.

Huh. From the looks of things, you're completely wrong.
And now you're trying to claim that you're "still right".
So how many lights does that make it? Are you saying that 2+2=THREE? Or are you now saying that the number of lights doesn't matter, and that it's whatever you say it is, and that's all that matters?

I've never actually watched Star Trek, it's not something that interests me. But, I do live and breathe tvtropes, so I've heard this one before.
My understanding is that Captain Picard was being held captive by some nasties, who were torturing him unto the breaking point to try to get his mind pliable. Their test was that they would flash four lights, and force him to believe there were five.
Captain Picard manages to resist to an extent, even insists there are only four lights. But later on, he admits, in a quiet despair, that at one point, his mind tricked him into seeing five despite his protestations.
Kind of depressing.

I thought this thread was based on the "how many lights are there" meme. You and Wulfie say there are four, not three, not five, but FOUR. And when I point out that you got the details wrong, you say I'm quibbling.
So you're just coming right out and admitting that it really doesn't matter if someone says there are three, four, five, nine, a eleventy-billion lights, none of that matters?
Is that what you're saying?
Or you insinuating that when FauxNews gets the facts and details wrong, they're being "truthy"? Like how when you get things spectacularly wrong, you're not "lying", but if anyone else gets the tiniest thing off by a bit, they're blatantly lying?
Is that your message in this?
You keep insisting that you're completely right, but you've been shown to be completely wrong twice in two posts. So if we're to believe you're "completely" anything, we have to believe that you're completely full of crap.

Jean Luc Picard accurately states that there are 4 lights.
The tormentors tried to make him think there were 5 lights.
Much as the MSM tries to tell the public ( minus the painful use of torture ) that what we SEE isn't what we really see.
That's pretty much the message here. Sorry it doesn't register w/ your feeble mind, Kwickie.

Or how one networked called the 2000 elections, for Gore, before the polls in western FL had closed ?
There's bias and spin enough for all, but when the MSM is so vastly outweighed by the Left, the spin they produce gets repeated far more often, and repeated , as 'fact', than anything coming out of FOX.

Actually the analogy is a particularly poor one. Watching the Fox news may be excruciating, but it is nothing being tortured to the point of complete psychological breakdown, where reality becomes distorted. It is, like its predecessor 1984, damning torture and tyranny, but this particular scene is not about the affect of misinformation.
1984 contains many such examples that you might have used. The fact that there is an electronic media system which enables facts to be rewritten after events to show the tyrannical government in a positive light, the manipulation of language to create a universal mind set of the people of Ingsoc, were brilliant and pertinent theories that Orwell put into his narrative and are particularly applicable today. Newspeak is todays soundbites.

Right on, Magons. But you see, Wulf just looks for something he can use--and since his mentality is superficial, he's only seen or read the superficial. Especially fantasy, science fiction, and anything with a "hero" in it. I'm not sure he's ever even HEARD of 1984, much less is familiar with all the brilliance of it. You will only get the simple and the superficial from both he and Raptor; one should never expect more.

This is especially obvious when he brings out things like the speech from Braveheart. You know, the movie where in the end, Mel Gibson is brutally tortured and killed? Lot of good his words did him there, eh? I bet he worked all day on that speech.

Byte, I've never equated Braveheart with anything actually historical, but with the ego of Mel Gibson and Hollywoodized, fictional history. So have no fears on my account. ;o)

There is certainly bias and spin enough to go around on both sides, but it takes someone totally insane, after all that's been proven, to think FauxNews is an actual NEWS station.
So, just for the fun of it:Quote:
You wanna learn about how they rigged THAT one, try the article at the website.
Shortly after 6 p.m. two waves of exit polls from the Voter News Service (a consortium set up by the major TV networks and Associated Press) showed the Florida vote going for Democratic candidate Al Gore. John Ellis received a call from the Bush campaign in Austin and told them the bad news. At 7:52 p.m. the major networks, including Fox, called Florida for Gore http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/nov2000/fox-n17.shtml
As to poor Rather, he was royally screwed--as he should have been for broadcasting material that hadn't been properly checked out. That doesn't change what really happened, which many have investigated and one has to choose whether to believe or disbelieve that particular "conspiracy theory". You have to make up your own mind on that one.Quote:
It turned out that George W. Bush, at the time a senior staff member in his father's campaign, had served in the same Houston unit as Lloyd Bentsen III and was recruited the same year by the same man, Colonel Walter "Buck" Staudt. That unit, the 147th Fighter Interceptor Group, tasked with defending the Gulf Coast, was well-known as a "champagne unit" because it housed not only Bentsen and Bush but a number of other sons of the Texas elite, such as John Connally III, son of the former Texas governor and Nixon treasury secretary; Al Hill, the grandson of oil tycoon H.L. Hunt; and several members of the Dallas Cowboys.
(T)the timing and circumstances of Bush's entry into the Guard were enough to raise eyebrows. In February 1968, three months before Bush graduated from Yale, the Tet offensive left more than five hundred U.S. soldiers dead in a single week. That same month, Walter Cronkite famously declared the Vietnam War "mired in stalemate" just as President Lyndon Johnson canceled draft deferments for most graduate students. Days before he would become subject to the draft, Bush, whose father was then a U.S. congressman from Houston, won a coveted slot as a pilot in the 147th.
Bush maintains he simply interviewed with Staudt and was accepted on the spot. That may be true, but it would be hard to argue that there weren't more-qualified candidates: Bush received the lowest acceptable score on his pilot aptitude test.
In 1988 Staudt, by most accounts a bullying, cigar-chomping autocrat, told reporters that there had been no "hanky-panky" involved in getting Bush and Bentsen into the Guard, and he repeated that defense in 2000. But suspicion was not unwarranted. There was a long list of men trying to get into the Texas National Guard. And several months after Bush entered, Staudt paid a visit to Washington, D.C., and lobbied the elder Bush for funding for Ellington Air Force Base, in Houston, making sure to update him on how well his son was doing.
(T)he man who would sit at the center of the Guard story, Ben Barnes, then the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, has said he regularly fielded requests for entry into the National Guard, and after assessing the trade-in value of the favor, he would pass them on to Rose to sign off on. It was on Rather's infamous 60 Minutes segment, in 2004, that Barnes first publicly recounted how he had called General Rose on behalf of George W. Bush in the spring of 1968. Barnes claimed he had received a call from Sid Adger, an oilman in Houston who was a close friend of the elder Bush's. As it happened, both of Adger's sons were also in the Air National Guard in Houston, under Staudt's command. Barnes told me that in the late seventies, while he and Adger served on the board of Texas International Airlines, Adger personally thanked him for help

Man, now I feel dumb, I could have sworn that there was something very like that in the 1984 movie. I guess I need to go back and watch it again, or maybe read the book. I love TNG too, so I feel dumb for not remembering that, once someone said it I recalled it.
I'm the type of person who wouldn't last well under torture, there are as many lights as you want, I'll give in on that score to save my energy for holding out against the big things. Yes I know its about gradualness, but there are things I hope never to move on so I'll give in on the little things if need be. But hopefully that won't happen to me, but you just never know with the way the world is going today. My dad waterboarded himself in the bathtub once, it scared the crap out of him and he had a new appreciation for how hard it would be to not give in when being tortured.
I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

You should read "Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number" or watch "A Dry White Season", or perhaps "Brazil" - knee vs electric drill, tho I have to warn you "I had a complication of my complication" will probably be the thing that sticks in your head.

In principle, the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects. And its object is not victory over Eurasia or Eastasia, but to keep the very structure of society intact.

New Speak = texting, I avoid engaging in shortened talking like that, mainly because of 1984 honestly. You'd be surprised, or maybe you wouldn't, how many people think text speak is acceptable as a communication medium in non texting situations. Grrrrrrrrr.

Apologies Byte. Wasn't meaning to insinuate anything negative historical wise with my example. Just was touching on Niki's point about Wulf's habit posting up heroic-sounding soundbytes and buzzwords without actually bothering to take a second and actually think about the context and/or results that followed the rousing speech. Braveheart was just the one I gleaned onto because I know Wulf's posted it before and even without seeing the film, I know what the end result is. Had I actually taken the time to dive into the archives, I'm sure I could have found a dozen or so other examples that proved my point.

Well. It's true that there's a somewhat unfortunate context in that the rousing speech in Braveheart about "they can take our lives but they can never take our freedom" ends with William Wallace being captured and executed (took both his life AND his freedom).
The actual battle was less about Hollywood military tactics and honour and valour and more about the Scottish tendency to fight a bit dirty. See, there was this bridge (which was nowhere in the film), and the English expected that the Scots would politely let them cross before commencing battle. Instead, the Scots waited for the British to start crossing and then started killing them when their army was split into manageable chunks.
But, there's a broader picture there too, in that the resistance of that time actually managed to keep Scotland sovereign for a couple centuries until the 1600s, when the Scottish pet king James took the throne and united the three nations. And Longshanks WAS a genocidal bastard, you should see what he did to Wales.

That's not fighting dirty, that's fighting smart. Lining up on a field is the dumb way to fight. I was raised in a very pro guerilla warfare household, attack when they're not ready, attack when _you decide to attack, not when they want you to, use your terrain and your knowledge of it against them. If you're invading and not defending, make sure to understand their terrain better than they think you will. And always kill their leader as soon as you can.
Byte, there's a book that I loved in my girlhood called "The King's Swift Rider" about this time period, takes place after Wallace's death. Lots of fun to read, about the Bruce's young spy Martin (a novel). My favorite novel about that time period.

That wasn't at all a negative endorsement of fighting dirty under the standards of any period of time. Trickery and deception was how scotsmen won most of their fights.

I knew you didn't mean it as a bad thing Byte, you're too smart to have meant that. I'm just saying that fighting dirty = fighting logical.
The few times I've tried online dating (the only way I can seem to get dates) I've stopped writing to men who can't write a decent letter and use lots of LOLs for no apparent reason, I don't have time for that sort of incompetance.
