Rockets pound Israel, Gaza as Netanyahu alleges 'double war crime'

Rockets and shells crisscrossed the skies over southern Israel and Gaza on Thursday as Palestinian militants continued rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and Israel pounded what it called terror sites.

Israel reported three people killed. Hamas said 13 Palestinians were killed, but gave conflicting information as to how many of them were Hamas militants.

At least 245 rockets from Gaza have been fired into Israel since "Operation Pillar of Defense" began Wednesday, the Israeli military said. Israel's Iron Dome defense system has intercepted more than 80, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Israel has targeted more than 200 "terror sites" in Gaza, "severely damaging the capabilities of Palestinian terrorist organizations," the IDF said. The military said it targeted scores of "medium and long range rocket launch and infrastructure sites across the Gaza Strip."Much, much more at http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/15/world/meast/gaza-israel-strike/index.htm

Somebody needs to take these two out behind the woodshed and spank the SHIT out of them. Certainly not encourage one side, as in my opinion America does...

Hello,

The less we get involved with that mess, the better. I think the U.S. is one major problem preventing those gents from properly sorting out their shit.

What *I* do not understand is how any of them Likudnik bastards dare propose the idea with a straight face that they got some kinda divine right to fire fekkin artillery into someone elses country, and act like it's all okay, then scream, whine, throw a tantrum and call it an "act of war" when they shoot back ?!

What the fuck, man ?

Sweet bleedin jeepers, could you IMAGINE what we'd do if say, Cuba shelled Florida ?

Just, I dunno even how to SAY it, the entitlement, the arrogance, to think they got some kinda free pass to do something like that, to just.. arbitrarily shell neighboring countries without so much as a how-do-you-do, that's freakin MADNESS, especially when they expect, no, demand, that said country just lay down and take it ?!
*shaking head*
And just how much of it is escalation intended to draw us into it, or throwing a tantrum cause of being spurned by the current administration, I wonder...

Again, merits to leaving the hell alone - we should make it ABUNDANTLY clear to everyone, everywhere, that we're not gonna get rooked into backing their aggression and protecting them from the inevitable results of their malicious stupidity this time...
And then THAT problem will solve itself, one way or another.

I see our I'm-not-a-right-winger Geezer and resident crazy person have put up threads about this--apparently mine wasn't good enough. Fair enough.

My question would be "who started this shit?"--Israel keeps saying they have a "right" to defend themselves, but that rings pretty hollow when it starts right out with "Hamas commander killed in air attack." As to it becoming WWIII and Egypt getting involved and all, I agree with Jong:

Quote:

i wouldn't expect Egypt to get directly involved now. They get more status and talking points by sitting back and letting Israel do their normal overkill. After the likely Israeli incursion the Muslim Brotherhood Govt. can rally more support from more moderate states.

I'm not sure anyone in the Middle East is stupid enough to contemplate an all-out war...except maybe Israel. Maybe if we stopped bowing and scraping to them, they might be more hesitant to act like playground bullies.

In fact, worse than playground bullies. If ANY other country behaved as Israel has behaved for years now, we'd label them a terrorist state or invade or something. They've commited almost every crime imaginable, essentially destroying a neighboring country in about a hundred different ways, from the more well-known ones to beatings, intimidation and humiliation of children ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/aug/26/ israeli-soldiers-mistreatment-palestinian-children) to their siege of Gaza (caled "inhuman and incompatible with international law by the UN and international community: - http://12160.info/profiles/blogs/ israel-threatens-aid-ship-seeking-to-deliver-food-to-gaza), to violence against the Palestinain population (too many to cite, but I'll start with some human-rights violations detailed at http://www.hrw.org/world-report-2012/world-report-2012- israeloccupied-palestinian-territories), to the blockade ( http://www.cnn.com /2012/10/20/world/meast/gaza-ship/index.html), to the violence perpetrated by their Israeli-backed settlers against those in Gaza (check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki /Settler_violence) to to destroying Palestinian water wells ( http://www.americantaskforce.org/daily_news_article/2012/10/24/local_ official_israel_destroys_5_water_wells_jenin andhttp:// www.americantaskforce.org/daily_news_article/2012/08/06/gaza_water _increasingly_polluted_and_expensive and "Israel allocates 70 times more water to each settler than to the average Palestinian in the West Bank" - http://www.americantaskforce.org/daily_news_article/2012/07/30/ attili_israeli_settlers_draining_palestinian_water_supply - I mean seriously!). Israel has behaved like an ugly overlord with our help, and has made any peace process more impossible than Hamas or any other group. Maybe if they'd stop (which THE MAJORITY OF ISRAELIS WANT), something could change. As it is: Not so much.

The entire world knows how horrible this situation is, how Israel has persecuted the Palestinians and attempted to crush them, and how only America bows and scrapes to them and HELPS them continue their war. Until and unless we stand up to them, the horrors will continue. That's my opinion on the matter.

(ETA: I had to break up most of those links so the text would wrap, so just remove the "space" in the middle of the cite to go to the link. I encourage you to do so; if enough Americans were educated about what's going on--which you'll rarely hear about from our media--maybe we could demand our country stop supporting these bastards.)

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Yes, because if some group were firing mortars and rockets at San Diego from Mexico we'd just sit around and sing Kumbaya until they stopped.

We wouldn't. It's ridiculous to expect someone to sit around and let themselves be attacked without retaliating.

History shows that the British barely had time to get out of Israel back in 1947 before the Arabs were attacking. Every war Israel has been involved in they have either been attacked or provoked. Technically, the indiscriminate shelling of civilians is a war crime, and as such Israel can stage a reprisal. It could also be argued that Hamas are illegal combatants and can be executed upon capture. According to the rules of war, Israel is actually showing quite a bit of restraint.

Well them to continue the discussion in the obviously longer thread, I will re-post what I posted under Geezer's.

------------------------
This is a war of choice. Netanyahu made a huge stink about Iran, but didn't get a hearing in the Obama WH. So he took his dog-and-pony show on the road, went to the UN and got laughed at. He made the fatal mistake of backing Romney.

There he is- facing election, with no war to jazz up the population and little backing from the USA. Since his Iran balloon deflated, he's had to find another dog to kick. Hence, Gaza. This is just like Reagan invading Grenada, and Thatcher picking a war in the Falklands. Gaza just happened to be there.

Quote:

Barak was asked about speculations that the Gaza operation, launched 67 days before the Israeli general election, was politically motivated. Someone reminded him that before Operation Cast Lead, on the eve of the 2009 election, public opinion polls were predicting that Labor, under his leadership, would get between six and eight Knesset seats. Immediately after the operation, which as defense minister Barak conducted, his popularity soared and the polls predicted 15 or 16 Knesset seats for Labor. In the end the party got 13.

Of course, Netanyahu denies this is a political war.

--------------------
I will also once again link the video of the Israeli Defense Force(IDF) sniping at unarmed farmers for fun... farmers who are doing nothing more than harvesting parsley. I urge you to watch... it is incredibly ugly, and we support it with our tax dollars.

As Story pointed out, the "mortar" was fired by ISRAEL, so by the above logic (snark), Palestine had every right to retaliate.
Quote:

About 4 p.m. Jabari, who is not usually seen in public, permitted himself to venture out from his hideout and enter his car with a bodyguard. An Israeli aircraft, perhaps a drone, was waiting overhead. Its camera showed the car passing a bus. As it entered a broad intersection, it was hit by a rocket that blew the car apart and killed its occupants.

The assassination was a signal to begin the attack on the rocket arsenals. Israeli warplanes swarmed over the strip, striking some 200 targets in the next 24 hours. ?

First priority went to attacking the mid-distance Fajr rockets capable of hitting the ?Tel Aviv metropolitan area – a strategic weapon Hamas has not yet resorted to. Israeli officials say they believe almost all the Fajr missile arsenals have been hit.

Within a few hours, arsenals that had taken many months, if not years, to build up, were destroyed. However, thousands of shorter-range rockets remain and these are being fired in intense volleys.

Hamas operatives, stunned at the assassination of Jabari, had reason to be even more stunned at the targeting of the rocket storage areas, which revealed the depth to which they had been penetrated by Israeli intelligence.

Yeah, Palestine should just "sit around and sing Kumbaya". Right.

Also,
Quote:

is absolutely, positively TRUE. Israel has utilized it's "victim" status to create what we in America would decry from the mountain tops--AS THE REST OF THE WORLD DOES--if we weren't so deluded by propaganda. If enough Americans had the balls and brains to LEARN what is going on, and has been for a very, very long time, we'd rise up in revolt...and Obama would have cover to reduce our support of Israel's atrocities, which I have a feeling he would do if it were possible.

And there you have it...in a nutshell. More than anything, to me it's just a terribly sad situation that doesn't ever seem to get better, and I think of all the lives lost--mostly on the Palestinian side, and probably at least as many from starvation, Israeli violence and abuses.

It's so sad that everyone jumps, depending on their bias, to blaming one side or the other. There is PLENTY of blame to go around on both sides, but people would prefer to demonize one side or the other.

The only difference between the two is that Israel is rich, powerful and has first-class weapons...not to mention American dollars backing them up.

Ultimately Israel will lose the PR & TV war as they always do. The more they bomb, the more civilians including kids get killed. I would have thought that they had enough sophisticated technology to take out rudimentary rocket launchers without causing so much collateral damage. And as a ground invasion nears, I hope they fully understand what they're doing. This is a great potential moment for Obama to be the peacemaker and broker an immediate cease-fire.

You'd think, right up till you realize the collateral damage is more than half the point - sure, they pretend contrition, but look at this in the longterm, they blockade them, starve them, cut off their access to food, water, medicine... burn their fields, bulldoze their homes, poison their wells, and then you have the settlers moving in and massacring whole towns while the media remains silent, and when the displaced villagers dare try to defend themselves the settlers howl for the IDF to come "defend" them from the results of their illegal aggression and land theft, which they do, by prettymuch slaughtering EVERYONE in range.
A march that will, eventually, drive the Palestinians into the sea with nowhere else to go - what can you even call it but Genocide ?

What would you then have them DO, roll over and die ?
There's no honest broker, no agreement the Izzies won't break before the ink is even dry, laughing the whole while (and while trying to force THEM to hold to the terms under threat of violence) and so you wind up with a people backed into a corner fighting for their lives, their land, against an aggressor which has reduced an entire nation to a modern equivalent of the warsaw ghetto.

And yanno what bothers me too - I can easily see, provided this ever gets resolved without the total eradication of one side or ther other, eighty some years from now, steeped in cultural paranoid, fear and a sense of victim-entitlement.. Palestine doing exactly this to somebody else.

But again, what would you have them DO, when all they have is taken and taken and taken and taken and all they have left is their lives, which are so miserable and hopeless there's really no disincentive to suicidal attacks cause it's really all they got left ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irgun
How exactly is it any goddamn different, save that this particular batch of Terrorists is in someone elses country taking it inch by bloody inch - again, I ask you, what the hell do you expect them to DO, just roll over and conveniently fucking die ?

They got no logistical support, no air force, no armor, no fancy drones or smart bombs or satellite imagery - the best they can DO from a resistive point of view is rockets and car bombs, most of which is the bitter lashing out of a doomed people who got absolutely nothing to lose.
Sixty-four YEARS of this shit, children who have grown up being shot at by snickering IDF troopers, who have watched their friends be slaughtered, men who've grown old under the heel of an ever stomping boot with us cheering it right along waving the banners and pissing our hard earned money into the war machine doing it, you think they give a shit about the distinction between combatants and civilians any more, when THEY have never known it, never been shown it ?

You really think a kid who survived and witnessed a deliberate shelling of his freaking ELEMENTARY school with white phosphorus (made in the good ole US of A and given to the Izzies for free) is gonna be too goddamn sympathetic here ?
This has been three generations of non-stop stomping, and us helping it along at every turn and corner even as the Likud spit in our face and laugh at our gullibility.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO DO?!

Call it what you will, but when you are in someone elses country, taking their land and murdering their people, THEN screaming a fit and responding with overwhelming force when they have the nerve to shoot back, calling the other guys "terrorists" is no more meaningful than any other monstrous genocidal regime which has done so.

I didn't support that shit when *WE* did it, like hell imma let it pass unchallenged when done by one of our so-called-allies who is nothing of the sort.

Everything you said, Frem. I despair of the American people, who so easily buy into the "Poor Israel" propaganda and are blind and deaf to the realities of what's been happening over there, for SO LONG. Until and unless our populace is educated on the actual FACTS, nothing will change and our support will only embolden Israel's atrocities.

It's so frustrating that virtually the entire rest of the world knows the truth, and Americans go along making excuses for Israel and damning the Palestinians. I wonder if it will ever change? I KNOW that if the truth were known, Americans would rise up in revolt of our support of Israel, but I don't know if it will ever happen.

"The son of a Hamas official worked for Israeli intelligence and was the Jewish state's 'most valuable source in the militant organization's leadership,' a news report said Wednesday. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz said Mosab Hassan Yousef, 32, son of the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, was an informant for Israel's domestic security service known as the Shin Bet, beginning in 1997. The information Yousef passed on was considered so important and saved so many lives that his Shin Bet handlers gave him the nickname 'The Green Prince,' a reference to his relation to the Hamas founder and the color of the movement's flag. Yousef was instrumental in the arrest of a number of top Palestinian officials, including Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti and Hamas military wing members Abdullah Barghouti and Ibrahim Hamid, the report said. The report is based on Haaretz's interview with Yousef and on excerpts from his soon-to-be-released memoir called 'Son of Hamas.' Gideon Ezra, a former Shin Bet chief, said the Shin Bet -- also known as the Shabak -- has hundreds of agents providing information. 'Hamas cannot make peace with the Israelis,' Yousef is quoted as saying, 'That is against what their God tells them. It is impossible to make peace with infidels. ... The Hamas leadership is responsible for the killing of Palestinians, not Israelis. I wish I were in Gaza now. I would put on an army uniform and join Israel's special forces.'"

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4006385,00.html

"We have a case of the Jew, a totally different species. The body of a Jewish person is of a totally different quality from the body of members of all other nations of the world. Bodies of the Gentiles are in vain. An even greater difference is in regard to the soul A non-Jewish soul comes from three satanic spheres, while the Jewish soul stems from holiness."

I expect better from Israel, treating others poorly and not giving them rights doesn't become them. It would be nice if we could convince them to be nicer, they dishonor themselves by behaving badly. I want to find a way to still support them (since I kind of have to) but help them realize that they can do better and they should do better, because these are human beings that they are mistreating, who deserve rights just like anyone else.
