IO9.COM - Looks like Fox is continuing to stir up trouble among the Browncoats. For years fans have happily donned their knitted tributes to Joss Whedon's falled series, the Jayne Hat. It's possibly the most popular piece of convention-goer flair. But it looks like it's about to get a lot harder to get a homemade Jayne hat, because Fox is attempting to shut down all rogue hat makers...

If Fox had shown some interest in Firefly when it was on, I might have some sympathy for their trying to protect whatever rights they might hold.

So, if there is ANYTHING I can do to make sure they don't get another dime off anything Firefly related, sign me up.

I have made them for over 6 years, the license seems to cover the term "Jayne" hat, so we need to call them "Maw Cobb Hats" or "Cunning Hats",...any body got any ideas for names for the hats? I will still make them, just not called that anymore,...

How 'bout " Not Afraid" hats? as in " Man walks down the street wearing a hat like that, you know he's not afraid of anything."

I'm mad enough to buy /make one, then wear it to a 'Con, with a "Dare ya , FOX!" sticker on it.

Maybe time for us all to misbehave.

Every time I think I can't possible hate Fox more and they do something new. I have long ago banned watching or having anything to do with Fox TV.

Sadly I'm guessing this is because people have bought a license to sell "Jayne hats". Those license holders are paying for this type of service. Otherwise they're just burning money. Kind of a double edged sword. Do we want more merchandise like that crazy detailed hand made model that lights up or do we want to just stick with the fan made works? Lawyers won't let us have both.

We can hve both, the problem is we can NOT use the term "Jayne Hat",...the name is part of the trade mark now and that is what all the fuss is about. Us knitters have always used that term, but since ThinkGeek went looking for the rights to sell them, and Ripple Junction(I think thats their name, I will check and correct if wrong)has the rights, Thanks to ThinkGeek starting this inquiry, & ThinkGeek telling everyone on the hat listing that they could be found on Etsy, Fox had its lawyers go after the Etsy sellers. Its the same crap as when Fox went after the T-shirt makers a few years back,...we can't use the words "Firefly" or "Jayne Hat".

Now ThinkGeek is trying to win back customers by saying they will donate the profits to CSTS, BUT I don't care, they started this whole mess by going looking for the ability to sell them in the first place,...the're pretending they didin't know this would happen, bull sh*t! They are in BUSINESS, they understand trade marks and copy rights.

I have made them for 6 years and I sell them to a large group, who sell them at Comic Con,.....I have sold them on the boards, but not many, so they don't know who I am.

Greed is the problem, greed by Fox and greed by ThinkGeek. JMHO

If I knew how to get a message to him I would have asked for help, but he doesn't check in at Whedonesque much and I forgot his new Twitter handle,...I Tweeted to Nathan, he just Tweeted about them & asked him to tell Adam (Adam is in New Zealand right now) if we can call them "Adam Baldwin Hats".
I wonder if Joss would rather stay out of this one,...JMHO

Now Jayne heard the Fandom's hearts breaking
He heard the Browncoats lament
And he saw the FOX corp suits taking
All the Jayne hats off of the nets

He said you can't do that to the knitters
You can't unravel their work
So he strapped on his hat
And in ten seconds flat
Said FOX dudes don't be a jerk

That last line needs work I think.

Frankly, I do not want merchandise like the two thousand, five hundred dollar light up model
when a fan produced a very nice $250 resin kit.....
......oh that's right, that got C&D'd out of existence, too.
So, I can't in anyway justify thousands of dollars for the licensed product,
and they kill off the unlicensed stuff I CAN afford.
All that means is I'm not buying (or supporting) Firefly at all.
Yessir, keep "building" that fandom, corporate lawyers.
(And I get protecting copyright, but in the entertainment biz,
somebody in legal needs to team up with somebody in creative
and start thinking outside the box.)

Too bad that seems to work as well as mixing matter and
antimatter: you get a lot of heat, and everyone gets burned.

Support the protest of FOX’s cease and desist to fans who sell handmade Jayne hats by posting photos to the links below.
