" Shots fired at the US Senate " was how I heard the news first break.

1 injured - as was relayed by Harry Reid, via reporters.

Only, the shots weren't in or on the steps of the Senate or its offices proper.

Apparently, the woman shot didn't have a gun. She DID have a child in her car, however.

I'm sure the holes in the story will be filled in as the days and weeks go by, as to what the hell happened, and why she was shot.

Already they're saying she had a history of " mental issues ".

Please.

I saw the Senate gave 2 standing ovations in appreciation for the Capitol Police, and how they acted. I wonder if that wasn't a bit premature.

Never was a shooter, other than the Capitol police. They first tried to claim the woman had a gun. Now, it appears to not be the case. I wonder if they'll " FIND " a AR-15 in the trunk of her car...

The thing is AR, we don't know exactly what happened to initiate the events that led up to her being surrounded with guns with a 1 year old in the car. I'm not at all saying she was to blame, at all. I know far too little and if she was unarmed, this surely could (should) have ended differently.

But for that vast majority of people (especially with their baby in the car), even with adrenaline running, her actions would probably not be the ones they would take. Vehemently asserting their unarmed status, the presence of their baby and emerging from the car hands up to prevent further escalation would be. This is why I suspect something substantive affected her state of mind and pushed it beyond rational thought.

Regardless of why she did what she did, her actions justified a lethal response from police. When you use your vehicle as a weapon...you are using a weapon and the police are fully justified in acting to protect their lives and the lives of all the innocent bystanders.

This is not the first car to hit one of those barricades, but it is the first time an incident has escalated beyond normal control. That is a busy area filled with pedestrians and tourists. A high speed police chase is not acceptable. Two police officers were then injured before this went to the lethal stage, I wonder for all the police haters out there, how many police and or civilians are people like this supposed to run down before police can shoot them?

There has been a good bit of criticism of the Capitol Police for their response to the Navy Yard shooting here a few weeks ago, with members of a heavily armed tactical team that responded to radio calls for help claiming they were told to stand down by higher ups, leaving the response to D.C. Metro forces less well armed and armored. Capitol Police officials are supposed to be investigating, but it's kind'a fallen off the radar.

Could be the Capitol Police were a bit keyed up after this.

What Michelle and Other Senators did was get members of our greatest generation into the WW2 Memorial, which was funded largely ( if not entirely ) by private funding. I can understand, from the POV that there were conflicting reports of multiple shooters, that the CP were thinking that sticking to their post during the Navy Yard shooting was the right call.

Go running off to deal w/ 1 crisis, and that leaves your primary duty open to attack.

Erm, exactly HOW does one go about "de-escalating" hopped up, wild eyed, adrenalin jacked badge bearers who are firm in the belief they'll never have to face actual accountability and act like a horde of rabid beasts when their blood gets up ?
Thanks to what I call "beehive effect" once the horde has been provoked, EVEN IF THAT "provocation" is infantile, ridiculous (car backfiring nearby, not being servile enough, trying to avoid a beating) your fate is a GUARANTEED hail of lead, attempts to surrender or no, and even in the vanishingly rare case that might not happen, still high odds of being beaten to death, or otherwise suffering in-custody death - ergo, once that has happened what on earth do you have to lose ?

Whatever happened prior to the "beehive being kicked" ONCE THAT HAPPENS, you will almost certainly die - recent history and police conduct over the past decade has made that abundantly, bitterly clear, so at that point there's really nothing left to lose, is there ?
Worth remembering that even the Supreme Court has ruled that (in part due to this very problem) in some situations fleeing from police, whether or not you have done anything wrong, is a viable and reasonable thing to do.

No, we don't have any idea what happened, but once the beehive got kicked, I think we all know what was GOING to happen, including this lady, which may or may not have contributed substantially to what happened then.

The issue was that they had already arrived at the Navy Yard, were getting set to deploy, and were called off when they requested a Go order. Also, there were several other teams available around the Capitol, White House, and Congressional office buildings.

I get the feeling a lot of folks were upset by the "Let the proles die. We gotta protect Congressfolks." vibe.

Just to make the Capitol Police look even worse, the recent incidents at the Capitol and the Navy Yard have revealed that their radio system can't communicate with the Secret Service, and often their radios can't communicate with each other. There has been an on-going project pretty much since 2005 - in response to 9/11 - to upgrade communications between the Capitol Police and the Secret Service, Park Police, D.C. Metro police, and other police and security forces in the D.C. area. Originally budgeted at $35 million, costs are now $107 million, and the new equipment has yet to be deployed.

Lawyer for family of mother killed in White House incident arrested as claims of coverup persist

Eric Sanders, lawyer for the family of 34-year-old Connecticut mother Miriam Carey who was fatally shot by law enforcement in early October near the White House, was arrested Tuesday.

He is being held on a $181,666.66 bond and was ordered by a judge to pay an additional $1,000 for every day he remains behind bars.

According to the New York Post, Sanders -- who was a New York police officer before he became a lawyer who built his practice by taking discrimination suits against the NYPD -- was arrested at his Melville, Long Island, home for failing to keep court dates and pay settlements.

He is accused of reneging on payments owed to former employee Mary Rocco, who sued him for firing her in 2005 after she became pregnant.

Rocco’s attorney, Tracey Bernstein, slammed Sanders for professing to be a civil rights lawyer while violating the civil rights of her client.

Sanders has claimed he is unable to pay Rocco and has since filed for bankruptcy, but Bernstein finds this odd since he reportedly has a $900 monthly NYPD pension, a $10,000 per month income from his law practice and recently boasted to a local newspaper of a $500,000 legal settlement in another case.

On Oct. 4, Sanders held a news conference with the family of the slain Carey’s family in front of her home.

Meanwhile, accusations of a cover-up in the new mother’s killing persist. Sanders and the family say Carey did not ram into the White House barricade deliberately but was attempting to make a turn. Other reports allege that police threw a tire iron at her car as she was attempting that turn.

Reports say Carey, who had a 1-year-old baby, was suffering from post-partum depression and had had delusions of President Obama stalking her. Her daughter was in the car with her when she was shot, but was unharmed.

Her family disputes much of what was reported, saying instead that Carey was gunned down unnecessarily.
