My father is having open heart surgery tomorrow morning. He was scheduled to have it on October 29, but there was also a "stand-by" option that if someone else cancelled, he could get in sooner. Yes, that's how serious it is.
My mom just called - the hospital just called her and if they can get down there tonight - and they will - he will have his surgery tomorrow morning.
If it's in you to pray, please do so. If not, then send some really positive vibes in the general direction of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis Minnesota.
And if some of them stray by my house, that would be nice too.
Suffice to say, my online presence will be sporadic at best for the next few days.
Spirits up, people.
I draw...therefore I am.

Sending Good-Mind vibe all the way from B'ham, AL up to you and yours in Minnesota. I hope all goes well Channy.
May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I'm on this morning for a bit. Have to work this morning to meet a deadline, then I'm back to the hospital.
Last I saw of Dad, he was dozing in a wheelchair on his way to surgery.
To clarify, he's having a valve replaced, but while they're in there, they're going to do a single bypass. I'm told it will take 6-7 hours altogether. Dad is 77 years old and otherwise in good health, so once this is successfully done, he should last a good long while yet. As my brother-in-law said, "You're as ornery as my mom, so you should come through just fine."
Thank you all for your thoughts, well wishes and prayers. To paraphrase Mal and Wash...
Whoa... Good Friends.

Prayers from my way to your dad, Channy.
I've been there before with my mom, except when she had her double bypass it was after she went into cardiac arrest as the two of us were sitting together in the waiting room of the hospital. She's fine now, but it was the worst 2 weeks of my life, and at the time she was only 58.
Your dad will pull through fine! Keep your spirits up and all of us are thinking about you.

I haven't been around this board much to post lately, so your call must have drawn me. I'm definitely on it!! And here's a healing prayer in case someone wants some guidlines on what to say:
Thy name is my healing, O my God, and remembrance of Thee is my remedy. Nearness to Thee is my hope, and love for Thee is my companion. Thy mercy to me is my healing and my succor in both this world and the world to come. Thou, verily, art the All-Bountiful, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.

**IF** your dad seems fuzzy after the operation, try cutting way back on the pain meds, or out altogether if possible. The combination of post-anesthesia and pain meds can make people disoriented. (It's happened to several people I know.)

Wow, I can just imagine what's going through your head right now. My mom had a heart attack a few weeks ago.
In no time she was back to being as ornery as ever, though. Seriously, angry Mal has nothing on my mom.
Your dad's gonna be just fine. God is one of healing. Your family will be in my prayers.
Start planning the Get Well party. I'll be there in spirit!

Hello Channain,
I'm sending you and your father my best wishes and keeping my fingers crossed for a quick recovery. I want to tell you a bit to cheer you...
My grandfather was admitted to the hospital last year with an unidentified problem. Turns out he had a gangrenous gall bladder, pneumonia in both lungs (double), and colon cancer.
They removed the cancer and gall bladder, and aggressively treated his pneumonia. He survived against all odds!
He is now living in Colorado with my mother, kicking up his heels twice a day. He's 90 years old.
I hope that little survival story gives you faith in your dad's recovery. Just goes to show you, even when you are old and the odds are WAY against you, things can turn out great!
Much good luck and health to you and your family!

Dad Update: He came through the surgery really well. He's been in ICU ever since, but today he's sitting up, watching nurses (his wink works) and wondering how much longer he has to sit there.
He was a little disoriented at first, no doubt as a result of his pain meds. They took him off the more powerful ones and he was much more alert after that. He's supposed to be sleeping, but really he'd much rather be out stacking wood. Yeah, like THAT's gonna happen!
I fully believe that threads like this are equally as effective as having many voices in one place praying. I've seen it done before. Again, I thank everyone for your support!

I can remember reading some research carried out somewhere that showed that people who were prayed for got better quicker than those who weren't. And the people who were prayed for weren't told to prevent a placebo effect...
Anyway, just thought I'd add my 2 cents there. Glad to hear your dad's okay, Channain.

Thanks BC
and everyone
More good news. Today Dad is sitting up, eating solid food and apologizing to the nurses he yelled at when he thought he was being held prisoner in his brother's house. Ah, anesthesia, gotta love it. The confusion started to abate yesterday, but he had to stay in ICU one more night. Today he'll hopefully be moved to a regular room, provided one opens up. It being a weekend and a holiday, we'll see how fast that happens.
Gotta Fly - And THANK YOU ALL!!!!
