*bump again today* And I thought I would mention that there is a message board at MoH's Shindig site. People who are coming/thinking of coming should sign up and get involved. This is a big undertaking here. Read up, introduce yourself, and see how you can help make this Shindig great! All of your fellow Browncoats benefit!

Just a quick question about the bao. Actually more of a favor to ask you than a question. I was reading some bao recipes online and saw that they use oyster, which is fine. When you buy the bao can you please ask whether they use mussels or escargot as well? Because I really really want to try the bao but I have an EXTREME allergy to mussels and escargot.
If you can't ask or they don't know, that is okay too, I'll just avoid eating the bao. Thanks. :)

I love the idea! :D

So far I have 29 confirmed attending and 6 tentative.

Make that 30 confirmed. :)

I don't have you on the list of people staying at my house. Are you pitching a tent, driving back and forth or do you have a hotel room? Not trying to be nosey. I just am trying to keep track of everything so that I don't have 30 extra browncoats without rooms that are trying to sleep in my bathtub.

Tethys,
I don't have you written down as an RSVP yet. Are you still planning on coming? If so, are you camping, commuting or staying at a hotel?
(All spaces in my house are full)

Please get back to me and let me know ASAP. I'm trying to keep track of everything so that I plan for enough people. You all need things to eat and drink. I want to make sure I have enough to feed you. :)

Thanks,

Thanks so much! :D

Oh, of course -- I didn't realize, my apologies. I will be staying in a hotel room with some other attendees, and it's all arranged.

No need to apologize. I'm just trying to get a head-count right now. And I'm trying to make sure that everyone has a place to stay worked out (to avoid the sleeping in bathtub scenario ;p)
Okay, you're on the list now. :)

Hiya MOH!

I've never heard of either of those for filling: usually it's like a little bit of roasted shredded pork and some sauce in the middle-- a bit like barbecue sauce. I'll see about getting a list of what's in 'em, though, since I suppose it's posible they might have a peanut or two inside, though you usually find those in sticky rice, not bao. Then I'll put the list out when we serve 'em. You should be more than fine, though.

Also, I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work putting this together. I know I really, really appreciate it, and I'm sure the other 'coats do, too. Huzzah for you!

*bump* because I'm helping MOH out here...

If you haven't read it already in the updated schedule linked above, there is going to be an auction to help out with costs of the Shindig.

We will be auctioning off new and just-released DVD box sets of television seasons.

Please be sure to bring cash or checks with you, because you may just get the deal of a lifetime.

Proceeds are to help cover the cost of the Shindig, and leftover amounts go to charity.

If there're others thinking of camping out at the PA Shindig: We may have an extra 2-browncoat tent you can use (waiting to see if we're signing on a convert, otherwise we would promise it to ya). Perhaps other BDFans have camping gear they aren't using, too. Come on! Don't be wimps! MyOrangeHat told us that if it pours, we could shelter in the barn or somewheres. And it's only October, people! We ain't talkin' Antartica here!

Please don't let hotel availability keep ya from coming to what will be the shiniest shindig ever imagined. I want to meet as many other Firefly fans as can come out. So hope to see ya there.

*bump*

Also to (keep) reminding people about the auction we're having to help fund the Shindig.

The food, planning, and even the rental of the projector is expensive, and MOH is doing this out of her own pocket.

Bring a couple of bucks, Browncoats, and help support MOH's efforts by bidding on one of the great DVD box sets of TV seasons that will be offered.

Stargate SG-1 Season 7 (that won't be available until oct. 19), Arrested Development, Angels in America...these are a few of the great titles we'll have up for auction, and any extra money raised will go to charity.

So c'mon, Independents, help support the cause!

A BUMP and a mini update: I'm working hard on the shindig stuff. Directions will be up tonight on a password protected page. I will post again when directions are up.

Quick question with this update: Would y'all be thrilled if I rented a popcorn maker that pops movie theater quality popcorn? The kind with movie theatre butter(NOT the oily butter). It is only $55 for a weekend rental. If I get the popcorn maker you guys are gonna have to bid like crazy at the auction so that I don't go broke; That a deal? I won't rent it until I get some opinions posted here. Thanks. ^_^
Remember: If the total of dontations+auction money goes over the cost of the shindig, the overage goes to charity.

~ANNOUNCEMENT~

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls we are merely a day away from the beginning of this shindig! :)

I have a few quick announcements:
-Popcorn machine is a go

-Port-a-Potty to keep my septic system from backing up is a go

-Directions are up on the website. If you have not thoroughly read the directions I urge you to do so, so that I can answer any questions for you BEFORE you get yourself lost. Also, make sure you print the directions page and take it with you. It has my phone number so that you can call if you get hopelessly lost.

-Tall Card Tournament unfortunately is a no go. Due to some last minute technical difficulties Tall Card has been cancelled. But don't get too worried, I'm already scheming up a wonderful Firefly game for Sunday. It's going to be good!

-If you sent me an email and I have not yet written back that means I didn't get your email. I am finally all caught up on emails and have answered every one that I got. So, if I didn't answer your question please resend the email.

-Trivia questions for various games are written and they are HARD! Study your FF trivia before you come to the shindig, everyone. You might even want to spend this evening rewatching episodes. Don't say I didn't warn you that the trivia was gonna be hard.

That is all for now. This evening I will be posting "Rules for the Shindig"(common sense stuff I know, but it needs to be said anyway) and a "Recommended Packing List."

See you all soon!

Okay, just for you Rhyme here is the Reader's Digest version of recommended packing stuff:
-Flash light
-Sleeping bag and/or warm blanket to keep warm while you watch FF
-Camera
-Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirt on cause we've got plenty of dirt, and poo too.
-Tarp or something waterproof to put under a blanket if you want to sit on the ground. It may dew as early as 8 or 9pm and you don't want to sit on a damp blanket on the damp ground.
-And YOU Rhyme need to pack the DVDs :D

See you soon! :)
Drive safely.

Which, btw, are somewhat out of season here in the Core Planets...but fear not: for we shall augment the fresh with the frozen, sliced, presweetened, and we shall smother them in whipped cream, and yea, verily, they shalt be yummilicious.

(Whoa! Good Bible!).

Oh browncoats we cannot wait to meet you! Take your TheraFlu tonight and be healthy tomorrow, or I'll dose you all with therapeutic cheese dip.
How's THAT for a threat? And I hope the folks with the guacamole are bringing spicy chips :)
Clear you sniffling folks right up. Verily.

Shindig Rules
Most of these are common sense, but please take a minute to read them through. Thank you. :)

1. NO smoking anywhere near the barn. Hay is incredibly flammable and smoking anywhere near the barn is dangerous. There will be a designated place for smoking with an ash tray and this is the only place you can smoke.
2. NO feeding the horses ANYTHING. Horses have very very sensitive digestive systems and can actually die from an ordinary stomach ache. So, please don't feed them. They will be just as happy if you give them a nice scratch on the face. :)
3. No underaged drinking. No exceptions.
4. No weapons. If you have a life-size working replica of Vera that you really want to bring, don't. Bring a picture instead.
5. Do not enter any pasture where horses are running loose and do not go in any horse's stall. This is for your own safety, everyone. An animal that weighs over 900 lbs. can hurt you without meaning to. My horses are nice, but remember you are in just as much pain if the animal hurts you by accident as if they did it on purpose.
6. Please remember that this shindig is family friendly. There are several families with young teenagers attending. Please act accordingly.

Packing List:

Don't forget to bring:

-Flash light: so that you can find your way to the bathroom while Firefly is playing. You don't want to walk into a tree because you can't see!
-Sleeping bag and/or warm blanket to keep warm while you watch Firefly. Also make sure you bring warm clothes.
-Allergy medicine: if you are allergic to something, chances are we have it here. So be sure to pack your allergy medicine.
-Cash or check for the DVD auction. You can get the deal of a lifetime on a DVD box set! For more information on the auction visit the Schedule section of the shindig website.

Well, it finally happened. I got sick and tired of missing all the Shindiggity fun, so I decided to start planning one of my own! This Shindig is still in the planning stages so ANY and ALL help/suggestions will be very appreciated.

Where: My horse farm. (Harleysville, PA. About one hour NNW of the Philly airport)

When: October 9-10.

Who is welcome: EVERYONE! Bring yourself, your Firefly converts, and potential converts.

How long is the Shindig: I'm thinking a Saturday-Sunday thing.

Accommodations: I have a large house, a few extra beds, plenty of sofas, and room for sleeping bags. Also, for those with allergies(I have LOTS of animals) there are a few hotels within 15 minutes of my house.

Potential Activities:(please comment on which you would like)
-FIREFLY PROJECTED ONTO THE SIDE OF MY BARN! We can watch Firefly outside under the stars. (This could be lots of fun, but is weather dependent.)
-BBQ, cookout. I'll feed ya. Maybe hamburgers and hotdogs, maybe something a bit classier if I can find someone who is a better cook than me.
-Beer! Yes, beer is an activity. ;p (I'll have soda for those under 21, so no under aged drinking.)
-Horsie rides. I'll give anyone that wants a chance to ride on a horse, a ride a few times around my riding ring. Or if you just want to get up for a photo op. that is fine too. :)
-Conversation with fellow Browncoats about Firefly. Like I could even stop that if I tried. ;p
-Someone at FFF.net suggested those with guitars and other instruments bring them. Good idea, but I'm musically impaired so this would be up to other to do.

Soooo, that's what I have so far. Suggestions, anyone? If you would like to come, please email me through my profile or post here so that I can get an idea of how many people to expect. Thanks! :)

-MOH

Are you KIDDING me? This will NEVER work out. Sorry to be the wet-blanket. (note: blanket turned out to be wet due to dew)

That's it! I'm bumping this thread BACK into circulation, because...because...I want to see the link to MyOrangeHat's Shindig site.

It makes me happy.

Hmmmm, ya know, I've got a thought that seeing Serenity played on the side of a certain barn once it is released on DVD would be pretty shiny.

I'd be willing to get a job where I don't have to work occasional weekends in order to attend if someone were to host a shindig once the BDM was out on DVD.

What a coincidence! I was just reminiscing to myself about that weekend! Favorite things:

1) 40+/- Browncoats singing "Take my love...take my land..." at the top of their lungs at the beginning of each ep...well into the wee hours. The poor neighbors!

2) The beautiful starlit night, everyone bundled up, sitting in groups yet all of us together, eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate (or whatever).

3) The kindness of MOH and her family. Truly remarkable for them to let several dozen complete strangers roam all over their house and land.

4) How everone brought something or contributed something, tangible or intangible, to the group as a whole. It was what I imagine a commune would be like. A good one, not like David Koresh or anything.

5) My chocolate chip cookies were a huge hit. Especially with Rhymephile--she still talks about them.

Anyone else? Have favorite memories, that is, not a comment on my cookies. Unless they ARE your favorite memory.

Believe it or not I actually updated the Shindig website. Apparantly there IS a limit to how long a person can procrastinate.

Hopefully I will be adding a poll in the next few days(I need to figure out how first) to get everyone's thoughts on the date for the 2005 shindig. So keep checking the site so that you can give your thoughts on the date.

Anyway, everyone can check it out at:
www.myorangehat.citymax.com/shindig.html

Edited to add: I just figured out the poll thing and it is up and working. :)

Y'all should come to farpoint. Hunt Valley really isn't far and Krad will be there.... Lot's of trekkies to convert.

If voting mattered, they'd make it illegal.

Ooh, wow, the Shindig website is updated? Keen.

Yes, I loved the chocolate chip cookies. Lovelovelove. I want more love in the fall. Highlight of the weekend, as was the lovely whiskey so kindly provided by Suze to help soothe my throat after a combination auction yelling and illness! Ugh, being sick that weekend sucked!

I loved the horseback riding; the generous Browncoats who bought everything I brought with me (sans Cedric the Entertainer, it's still in my trunk!); the laughter; all the fun despite my head cold; and putting faces to names.

Can't wait for the next one! And the next one will be even better, because the first one was a warm-up!

P.S. Mmmmm, cookies.
