First off, MANY MANY thanks to MyOrangeHat and HerOrangeFamily for hosting this wonderous event. We all truly appreciated your allowing so many strangers to invade your home.

The barn was the best screen! Our BDH's were 20+ feet high!! And the sound was perfect, thanks to Lerxt.

Next, thanks to Rhymephile for her auction skills and the goods that were auctioned off as well. I love my prizes!

Suggestion for next year's Double Jeopardy question: "What was the amount of the wager made by Cardie78 and Mal-licious?" And no, the Freakishly Knowledgeable gentleman may NOT participate. Unless he is on my team.

(post post script to Slayer730: Next time, MY team gets the blue bell.)

Firefly love to all,

The Co-Holder of the Red Bell from Hell,

Mal-licious

Ah yes the inevitable post shindig posts. I have to first say thanks and Huzzah to MOH and MOH's Mom for host the best party this side of the 'verse. Words can not discribe the shindigness of the weekend. I laughed...I cried...I laughed till I cried and cried till I got laughed at. It was bitter sweet leaving, kinda like summer camp now that I think about it.

But really the weekend was a success. I am already planning for the next one. Now to leave you with some highlites of the shindig. ( which of course are inside jokes, so sorry to all the browncoats that did not attend)

Highlites: Shit Statues, Freakish memory guy, sponge baths( please dear god no more), Norma you little freak, WWRD ( what would Rick do), The Rickets, and beautiful Gorram Weather.

God created Mudder's Milk so the Independence wouldn't take over the 'verse.

I can't believe I forgot to thank myself. How rude of me to me.

Thanks for the shiny shirt, I love it. I think I might marry it....

It truly was the event that made my year (until the Serenity premier, that is...)

Thankyou so much MOH and family. The farm was the perfect location. The food was excellent, and plentiful. The people were the kindest most wonderful folk I've ever had the privilege of meeting. I had thought that meeting Browncoats would be like seeing the best friends that you've never met. Right away I felt very much a part of the group, everyone was very friendly and open. Yes, I even sang along the Ballad of Serenity, which I NEVER thought I would do - I so rarely come out of my snail shell. Thank you everybody. Pics coming soon. :) (Everyone, please post your pics too.)

Hello, all (and especially to Her Illustrious Hattedness)!

I am deee-lighted to hear that everyone had such a good time (not that there was ever any doubt!)! REALLY wish I could have been there with you all, and had the chance to bask in Browncoat vibes at close range.

Alas, though, a family health thing emerged on Friday night (!!!), of the "98% chance of being nothing at all, 2% chance of being a Very Big Deal" variety (for the record, it has thankfully turned out to be the latter). Being an hour away with the only car was just not an option.

So, today, I had the heart-rending experience of going out to the car and hauling in my tent and extra sleeping bags, as well as one case of Mike's Hard Lime and one of Beamish Stout (closest thing to Mudder's Milk I could find), with which I had hoped to enliven the evenings of many 21-and-older Browncoats. This at least has the potential of constituting some built-in consolation (*hic*)!

I look forward to seeing all the photos, reading all the tales (what's all this about scat-sculpture?!?), and finding alternate ways of meeting up with all you fine folks in the future (hopefully not 500 years!).

Again, I'm pleased as punch (ruttin' silly expression, that) to read about the flowering of an idea which I watched rise from the humblest of notions, to become a Shindig for the Ages!

Keep flyin'!

Ten Things I learned at the PA Shindig...

1. A big, damn, hero is also a very large sandwich.

2. Everyone looks cute in a orange hat or a pretty floral bonnet.

3. The east coast PA Shindig has made the east coast larger. Illinois is now a part of the east coast.

4. When watching Firefly episodes, Browncoats laugh just thinking of the next funny line.

5. A Browncoat who looks like Rivers scares me when she picks up a twig.

6. Freaky memory people can win fabulous gifts and prices.

7. When you don't know the answer to a Firefly triva question, simply say: "We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient." Then sit down.

8. A "Vanna White" Browncoat is called a board bitch.

9. Browncoats are witty, clever, talented people who understand why former Fox execs are going to special hell.

10. My Orange Hat and mom know how to host the shinest Shindig in the verse!

Had a great time all! Thanks for everything!

A super-shiny huge thank you to MyOrangeHat and her family for throwing an absolutely wonderful time.

The horse rides were a great idea. I really had fun. I got the cute, short, stumpy horse, which suited me quite well.

I never realized how much I didn't know about the show until Firefly Jeopardy and the Firefly Bee. Must study for next year! Must study as hard as Freakish Memory Guy!

We played charades on Sunday, and how some people could guess "Mal's reaction when Saffron offers to wash his feet" or pantomime "The Message" scene where Nathan is running around to be in every shot in the gag reel is incredible. I also learned that miming someone driving means it's Wash, and miming someone putting on a hat and holding a gun means it's Jayne. I also learned that men miming Inara giving herself a sponge bath is hi-larious.

We had some great singers this weekend, everything from the theme song to the Buffy musical, but who knew The Hero of Canton could be played well on a *trombone*??

Dave grilled us up some great burgers! All the food was tasty, from the strawberry shortcake, to the bao, to the meatball sammiches, and all of this was brought by Browncoats!

I realized that being an auctioneer when I'm suffering from a cold is hard work!

The Big Damn Heroes on a Big Damn Barn was kick-ass. The best part was when 30+ Browncoats, all cozy in chairs, on blankets, or in tents sang the theme song together.

And a huge thanks to all the generous Browncoats who bid in the auction. It went very well.

It was a fantastic time, and I can't wait for next year!!!

Rhyme, you were absolutely heroic. I couldn't belive you hauled in all those shiny prizes and did all that auctioneering and hollering while you were all stuffed up n sick. You probably should have been in your bunk, cranked up on Theraflu, but no, you even went on the horsies and stayed up late to watch the Firefly marathon...wow.
May I presume you are resting today, in recovery mode? Hope so! Take good care, gf.

Saw those pictures, AnotherFF: Nicely done!
What a bunch of characters them browncoats are, eh?! Can't believe you got "River" to balance on the rail fence, or did she volunteer? Is that girl scary when she picks up a stick or what!!? Also, thanx for a couple cute shots of my Kaylee-esque daughter...and the action photos documenting "thrilling heroics" as BDHs rescue sunken Dodge from the bog (that's where my husband mucked up his new shirt, that Ryan had so lovingly produced for us), .. and those AMAZING Firefly-on-the-barn shots! Whoa!

So glad you (eventually) made it allllll the way from Maryland. You rock.

If ya ever make it to NJ shore, we will make you strawberry shortcake.

I just want to echo what everyone else has already said. It was a great time. Truely a shiny experience. Thanks to MOH an Mom of MOH for hosting our wild bunch of travelers for the weekend.

Things I learned
1) I can be on a horse for more than 5 seconds without falling off.
2) Sand really does get everywhere
3) That you can crochet underwear
4) I takes 2 days for a 5 quart block of ice/frozen chowder to defrost.
5) The true definition of mudders. We should rename Larry's parking spot "Mudder Hole" or simply "Canton"
6) That I need to study for next years triva. That was truly frightening.
7) Reavers (otherwise known as Turkey Vultures) alway seem to gather around browncoats
8) There is a universal hand signal to greet Fox Executives
9) I am the only one who likes bad HBO movies
10) Turning on the grill is a spectators sport. KABOOM!

Thanks for a great weekend everyone. I am kinda bumbed that I am back here all alone again (sniff) but you have inspired me to get our Firefly Meetup in Boston going in November. We have a good sized list but have never met. This is the month to start.

Great meeting everyone

10 things I learned from the PA Firefly Shindig:

1. If you pour your heart and soul and 8 million glue sticks into Firefly themed games, people WILL appreciate them.

2. Not even a Browncoat will pay $5 for Cedric the Entertainer.

3. * Blue Bells always win (Blue Sun).
* Purple Bells come in second (Purple Bellies).
* Red Bells always lose (Red scarves on the Browncoat uniforms...May have been the losin' side, still ain't convinced it's the wrong one!)

4. Bonnet Bob makes one STRONG cup a' joe!

5. At least 3 others (besides me) can sing the whole damn Buffy musical...till we're shushed, of course (Thanks Mal-licous ).

6. Fences are a weeeeee bit slippery.

7. When lacking official Canton mud, horse $h*t will suffice to build a statue in honor of the town's hero.

8. MANY MANY Browncoats support Kerry (sorry, Gary )

9. The Firefly Theme sounds better when singing it loud and proud for the 4th or 5th time.

10. Browncoats are the shiniest, nicest, craziest, funniest, and coolest people around!

MANY thanks to MOH, Shauna, and Paul...and the dogs, cats, horses, and neighbors...for putting up with us. It was incredibly fun and I can't wait till next year!

Browncoats ARE the best. Except one thing I learned is, if you stay up all night, sleep on the ground, and stumble around the rest of the next day looking thoroughly unwashed and disreputable...be assured that thirty browncoats *will* take pictures of you, and post them on the Internet, and the whole known 'verse will get to see how you look as a PA Shindig shantytown refugee!

Thank you, Slayer, for at least posting photos that make me look like a THINNER homeless person :)

Umm, how about you snore?

(FYI to Tzegha, but Ghost and I slept together. Sorry you had to find out like this. Sorry *I* had to find out like this, frankly. But yeah, I had the QUEEN sized air mattress {rightly so, I might add} by the window and he was over by the couch. Although, the snoring *could* have been the dog, looking for love in all the wrong places....)

Sorry, the pooch was with me. But yes he does snore. :D Just before I went to bed he thought my sleeping bag looked like a nice bed. Unfortunately I did too. He ended up sleeping next to me on the floor below Jessica's (don't know her online name) couch. Was there when I went to sleep and when the not so haunted TV turned on in the AM. Still do not know how I was able to turn off the TV. Awakened from a dead sleep and with out my glasses. It was a miracle I got it turned off. :D

I would like to take this opportunity to echo everything else everybody has said about MOH, including what I already said about her on the official shindig page. I would also like to add a special thanks for the firefly fan videos disc, as I can't seem to stop watching the tribute to Joss set to "The Spy Who Loved Me" (we should play that next year during an intermission).

"It truly was the event that made my year (until the Serenity premier, that is...)"

Well, technically, that is 2005, so this can still be the event of the year

"Who knew Hero of Canton could be played well on a trombone?"

:Gasp: Anything can be played well on a trombone! It may take me till next year to figure out how, but it can be done!

Slayer, I'm sure there's more than the four of us who know the entire musical

Other Trivia Qs for next year:

"Who was the Freakish Memory Guy?" (He's not allowed to put it on his nametag till after the q is asked)

"Who sang the Buffy musical?" (And they must know our real names :Evil Laugh:)

Ten things I learned from the PA Shindig:

1. It costs twelve ruttin' bucks to use the chesapeake bay bridge/tunnel(gorramit!)

2. The only experience more surreal than driving alone up the eastern shore at 4 AM in fog thicker than the smoking tree while blaring Kansas is lying in the cold on a sand-strewn blanket at 2AM surrounded by Browncoats, trying desperately not to fall asleep during "Out of Gas" (Whose title seemed to capture almost everybody by that point lol).

3. Fan created questions are freakishly hard.

4. And yet some fans have freakish memory.

5. Fan created crossword clues are also freakishly hard.

6. In the end, however, there is no clue that cannot be solved by a roundtable discussion among Browncoats.

7. If you place your tent to the side, out of the way, and sleep in till 9:30 you are guaranteed to miss something priceless.

8. Although blaring war scenes at movie theater volume at midnight will not make the neighbours call the cops, it will make them stand out on the porch the entire next day and stare at you.

9. Sponge baths are freakishly popular.

10. No random suggestion is harmless with Browncoats nearby. No matter how much you were joking someone WILL build a $h!t statue (It really was mud, but it didn't look like it), and they WILL turn up with whipped cream (not sure exactly how that one came about, but the result was funny )

Some things I learned at the PA shindig:

If you step out of your car and the ground is spongy, you're gonna be seriously bumming when you try to leave.

AAA doesn't consider being stuck in someone's yard a "road emergency".

If you need help and there are 50+ browncoats in the area, they will drop whatever they are doing and hook you right up.

There aren't many fandoms where a guy can show up wearing a pretty floral bonnet and still be considered cool.

A Harmon-Kardon system kicks just as much ass as a Bose, for a whole lot less coin.

[Homer voice]Mmmmmmmmm, bao. Droool.[/Hv]

Gas to get to Harleysville from Columbus - $45. Tolls - $9.50. Seeing Firefly on a 20 foot screen with full surround sound, not to mention hearing 50 or so browncoats singing "The Ballad of Serenity" at the top of their lungs - PRICELESS.

I hope to put up the links and some good pictures at the shindig website as soon as I can find a spare minute, which will probably not be until next week since I'm running the farm myself this week.

Hey man, sorry it took so long for a reply. My computer decided it didn't wanna play anymore, and I've been spending the last couple of weeks trying to resurrect it.

To answer your question: I only took the turnpike to Harrisburg, got off on I-81 to I-78 and took that over to I-476, thus bypassing a good bit of the turnpike. Isn't that thing paid for by now, anyway?

Although I was a little po'd about that, I guess I should cut AAA a little slack. A few months ago they did tow my sister's car a hundred-some miles using my card. Plus, I hit them up all the time for maps and such. And things worked out anyway thanks to Bonnet Bob, Mark TheTowGuy, and the rest of you shiny Browncoats.

(echoing in my mind as flashback initiated...in high school...in high school...in high school...)

Montage of scenes:

...bringing cookies to the geeky guys in the high school radio station, so they would like me

...writing the choir "Bullsheet" (gossip newsletter) and making mimeographed copies for the chorus classes

...standing in line to see Star Wars when it premiered in Downtown Minneapolis

...sneaking copies of SciFi porn (John Norman Gor novels) into school and starting a rash of "capturing and collaring slaves" in the music practice rooms

...midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Uptown Theater

...distributing those notorious "alternative lyrics" I wrote for Pajama Game songs during Junior year musical (honestly! the songs were dirty, but that didn't mean I had experienced ANY of those things. Despite Gor novels etc., I was NOT the floozy I would one day become...)

...hanging out at Chris Newton's house, listening to David Bowie and Lou Reed albums, and us throwing darts at each other

...25-cent Chili Dog night at the A&W Drive-Thru, and being able to scarf down six chili dogs with no ill effects or concern about weight gain

Sigh. Yes, those WERE the days.
Wacky times :)

Anyone else care to share high-school reminiscences? Larry wants to know :)

Oooh, next Shindig we should ALL BRING OUR YEARBOOK pictures, lists of what we did then, maybe the predictions made about us in high school...and make a game of it!! Extrapolation:
Firefly crew - fake yearbook (Inara was what? President of Student Council and cheerleader?
Wash, Class Clown and Shadow Puppet Club...?)

Gor novels? What are those? I never read them. Nope never read them. Never. Really.

In high school my nicknames were Elvis and Aquaman (I worked at the NE Aquarium in HS). I think people thought I would one day have a Vegas show where I inpersonated Elvis while having dolphins as backup singers. The biggest problem would have been the outfit. Polyester jumpsuit or orange spandex. I was always thinking the spandex with rhinstones would have been the best.

The one thing I remember the most was being in plays as seeing all the guys getting so in to having makeup on. I think at least one or two drag queens came out of that experience. :P

Awwww, sweetie, I'm so sorry. (wraps virtual arms around you for comfort). Please take care of yourself now, don't let yourself get too worn out and over-stressed. It's especially important now, as an homage, you know?

Still sending the love,

Mal-licious

That was a sweet post for Rob. I hope he takes
you up on it. York's not that far.

Speaking of Bonnet Bob's hometown...

Did you see Jon Stewart's little bit
about the diner in York PA???? OMG.
What was the local reaction?

And somebody wanting to make a Jayne's Hat
was looking for help and we said, "Oh, this SLAYER- something had an EXACT copy of Jayne's hat! Ask her about it!"

Hope they found you :)

Merry Halloween to you gamesters,
Suze

Didn't Our Illustrious Hostess
indicate that her Shindig Website
was going to be revamped as a
GREATEST HITS OF PA SHINDIG album or something?
That would be SHINY :)

She did indicate something to that effect.

Also, just a reminder: at next year's Shindig, there will be a Best Worst picture of MOH contest.

I have been having a real tough time lately, very depressed and stuff even before last week. Sorry for not being around more in that period. I'll try to be back more.

On a bright note, here in Boston the Tomb event is happening this weekend. Maybe I can find a fellow beantown browncoat to accompany me down there next time. Should be about dozen of us this weekend.

Trying to stay sane,
Jason from Boston
