I thought I'd start a music themed thread.

Do any Browncoats remember the first LP record, cassette or cd single (albums are also welcome) that they bought? Do they still like them today?

It would be great to see the diversity this creates.

The first vinyl single that I ever bought was "Rhythm is a dancer" by Snap!

(A 1992 dance track that caused controversy at the time with the lyrics: 'I'm serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer.')

The track featured a few verses of rap with the above lyrics and it had one of the moodiest intros and base lines to a song I'd ever heard.

I think it still holds up pretty well today...

Hi!

I'm old so bear with me: The LPs (albums/vinyl/whatever you want to call them) of Nazareth "Hair of the Dog" and Queen "Night at the Opera" were my firsts. And yeah, I still listen to them. When I'm in my car (on cd obviously). Alone. Then I hide them under my Metallica and Linkin Park discs.

The first cassette I purchased was a compilation of Glenn Miller Orchestra songs (way before my time - digressive story on how I got into them). The first LP that I purchased was the Stray Cats, "Built for Speed" (which was new at the time). I still like both groups but haven't listened to either of those albums in years. I had a decent vinyl collection of 50s and 60s motown/rock before I bought my first CD player, but I donated all those albums to my brother to supplement his 70s and 80s disco/funk/old school vinyl collection that he uses when he DJs.

OK, I'm old, too. My first cassette tape was Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and my first vinyl LP (I never bought singles) was The Beatles' "Yesterday... and Today". Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the lucky few who got the original collector's item cover.

I sort of outgrew Black Sabbath, but I still love the Beatles' album. It's kind of surprising though, when I'm watching college football, I notice many marching bands still play "Iron Man" from the "Paranoid" album.

Iron Man is one of my favorite songs, but only because my older brothers used it to scar me for life (long story). I can't even remember the first LP I bought, but it might have been KISS Rock n' Roll All Over. I think that was the title. Obviously, I don't still own it, nor do I still like KISS, except when I'm drunk and with my friend, who still bangs to heavy metal.

As an aside, for those who like Iron Man, do a search for Iron Man on iTunes sometime. It's shocking how many bands have covered that tune, and the variations. There's a loung version, an all-piano version, a mellow version by the Cardigans (think), a girlie-pop version by someone who sounds like all the girlie-pop singers on the radio these days, &c. Crazy.

The first album I got, I went in together with my brother and we bought "Meet the Beatles" (back in the early to mid 60's). I think my brother may still have it if his kids resisted the urge to use it as a frisbee when they were growing up.

Prior to that, I had bought some 45's of the Beatles and the Dave Clark 5... but I don't remember which songs.

The first album I bought entirely on my own nickel was called something like "The Romantic Strings of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra," conducted by Eugene Ormandy (mid to late 60's). I was always a sucker for Borodin's "Nocturne" and Barber's "Adagio for Strings."

First single (I was really young then, honest, still at primary school) "Flowers in the Rain", was it the Move? The guy who went on to form Wizzard anyway.
First album "Deep Purple in Rock" about 1972 I think. Have you seen how large Ian Gillan is these days? Him and me both I guess.

The first vinyl I ever bought was 'Trilogy' by Emerson, Lake and Palmer - at a garage sale in 1976. The first vinyl I bought brand new was 'Blue For You' by Status Quo. I still have both!

My first ever CD that I bought was the debut album by Third Eye Blind. I was in love with modern alternative rock... I was also in love with the lead singer, Stephen Jenkins! I eventually sold the CD to a pawn shop (along with alot of my other modern alternative CDs), and got into 80's pop, heavy metal, electronica, dance, and house, Celtic, world and new age (like Enya), orchestral, Gregorian chant, and film soundtracks. I still listen to modern rock but most of it nowadays is not that good. I listen to hip-hop and R&B quite a bit since it is all the rage on the Top 40 stations, but likewise, most of it ain't that good.

I loved that album, too! It wasn't the first one I ever bought, but it was the first one I ever wore out by playing it too much. I used to play guitar and I worshipped Ritchie Blackmore. I still get shivers up my spine from listening to "Child in Time".

Lets see, first CD (actually got two) - my dad came home one day with two CDs for me, one was the soundtrack to that terrible live action Flintstones movie (the first one) and the other was the Pocahantas sound track (I actually saw Pocahantas the other day and was surpirised to realized that I knew all the words)

First CD that i actually picked out...that would be LeAnn Rymes Blue.

The first CD I ever bought was Oingo Boingo Good for your Soul.

And yes, I still absolutely love it, as Boingo remains my favorite band of all time. Elfman is a genius. :) (By this time I have all the albums, the Farewell DVD, and Cds of rarities too)

First album I ever bought was "Night Moves" by Bob Seger; I was 12 when it came out. "Come to Poppa" is still one of my all-time favorite songs. I have no idea what my first cassette was, but since it was in the early-to-mid-80's, I'm certain it was either REM or Oingo Boingo...

First CD was "In Step" by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - an amazing grace note to the too-short life of a true guitar god.

First ever album or CD? Well, it was long before CD technology existed. I still have the album, which is KISS Alive II from 1977. Got it around Christmas of '77. I was all of 8 yrs old and thought KISS was the coolest band ever.

The first record I ever bought was a Cleveland Symphony recording of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony with Leonard Much conducting. It was a special record that supported the new "stereo" format while still being playable on existing mono machines.

I came to rock and roll late in life . I recently came across a bin at "Good Will" that had all the old Hendrix recordings in really good shape. My HiFi still has a turntable input!

Hmm.

The first 45 I ever bought (I was 12, I think) was You by Rita Coolidge. I still have it, though I haven't listened to it in years. Still like the song though. Might have to see if that one is out there on CD or music download somewhere...

I can't recall the first album or tape I ever bought - which is weird - because I usually remember such odd stuff.

The first CD I bought was Alan Parsons Project greatest hits (forget the actual name of the CD) so I could hear Lucifer really clear (as opposed to hissy or scratched up from tape or record)

"Rock and Roll Over" by Kiss was the first lp that I picked out myself. I think I had purchased with my allowance 45s of the songs "Convoy" and "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" before that.

Prior to these were records my parents picked out for me ("Free to Be You and Me", "Puff the Magic Dragon", etc.)

I don't have any Kiss records anymore. That is an easy band to grow out of, thank god. After Kiss I went through a prolonged Beatles phase. I still have all of those lps.

All of the above took place before I was 13 years old.

Thanks for all your input guys. This has been fun so far!

It doesn't matter about being embarrassed. There are always albums and singles that we first buy (or are already part of our collection) that we wish we hadn't bought. There are a few I can think of..

What matters is that we bothered to take an interest in music in the first place. It doesn't matter if it's a cheesy pop act or soundtrack from a movie or tv show. It's a strong influence in our day to day lives and things would probably be totally different for us if we never listened to anything at all.

Oh, wow. What a fun thread.

The first CD I remember getting was "My Reflection" by Christina Aguliera. Still got it. I can't take most of the songs anymore, though. I STILL jam to "Reflection", though. That's a pretty song. Made me want to be a singer. Sadly, nature said otherwise.

First cassette was "Crazy Sexy Cool" by TLC. I was too poor and too young to get that CD.

I'm standing up proud behind my collection. I bought the CD for Aladdin last year and the clerk questioned me about who it was for. I proudly replied me.

I love my Disney movies.

I bought "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits. Then I bought it again on cassette. Then I bought it again on cd. That cd got messed up and I bought it again. Currently it is old and scratched, and I'll probably buy it again.

I also have all of Mark Knopflers solo stuff, as well as Dire Straits. I love it!

From my screen name, you can probably tell I'm a big Eric Clapton fan. I've been playing guitar for around 12 years now, and I'm in two bands.

I listen to a lot of new stuff, but I still love my Dire Straits!!!

Ok, I really don't remember exactly what single I bought first, as my mother and aunts usually bought them for me, but I did have "Snoopy & the Red Baron" and "Convoy" in my collection too (as well as "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Telstar - The Lonely Bull")...I think the first album I bought for myself was Paul McCartney's "Ram" (because it had "Uncle Albert" on it). I think I was in Junior High then, somewhere about 1974ish...wow, where did the time go...

OH! Here's a trivia question for you all...The band that recorded "Convoy" (and some other really nice songs, believe it or not!) was called "C.W. McCall"....some of the members of that band have continued through to today as a new band that has been performing under their current name since the late 70's, but they're known for an entirely different type of music now....anyone want to guess what "C.W. McCall" evolved to???

I listened to vinyl long after the birth of CDs .
I liked my turntable it's this neat linear tracking thing. I had to fix it about a year ago, after not using it for a while, still works and sounds great! What can I say, I'm weird about my turntable?! :}

The first tape I bought was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. When Rolling Stone magazine listed the top however many albums of all time, Sgt. Pepper was number one. I'm a little sad that my choice is so mainstream. I'm never going to be cool.

I remember how floored I was when I went to a MS Christmas concert and Chip Davis told that story....It was a definite OMG moment, until I thought back to some of the other songs on the Convoy album, and how "orchestral" they were, then it kind of made sense.

Yeah, I admit it, I have a weak spot for MS, especially some of their earlier themed stuff ("Songs of the Sea" is still my fav) and the first couple of Christmas albums. After that it all started to sound alike.

Yeah, I was a touch concerned my ownself about lurking through this site, until I came upon a couple of "how old are you" threads. Quite a range.

Which gives me the confidence to allow that the very first album I ever bought was Hocus Pocus, by Focus. Got sucked in by the yodelling, I guess.

Firefly was the first (and only) television series dvd set. A lot going on in that show, I can see why Fox got scared.

the first album I bought with my own money was Endless Sumemr, Beach Boys. I had tons of the Disney 45s, you know the Davy Crockett tyoe stuff.

The first CD was Best Shots, Pat Benatar.

The first MP3 I bought was Santa Baby because it was Christmas time when I signed up for itunes. After that, She's So Unusual.

My favorite album growing up was Dark Side of the Moon.

I feel like I'm 12...the first cd I bought with my own money was Sheriee Austin's Words. I adore it still, but it got stolen (ironically) in Sydney a year ago. Of course, there were tapes and other CDs before that (the tapes of the embarassing boy-band phenomenon of the 80's variety), but I still remember the glee of actually buying the album.

My first 45 record that I can remember having was Blondie's "Rapture". I think I was 8 or 9. Loved it then, love it now. My first LP record was "Thriller" - who didn't like that album - especially a kid of the 80's. My first CD I bought when I was about 14, and that was Depeche Mode's "Strangelove" which I still own and listen to every once in a while.

The first cassettes I bought were Ace of Base's The Sign and Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill (which was surprising poplular with 11-12 year old girls). I can't remember which was first.

Before those I had all the soundtrack cassettes for all of the Disney movies since Beauty and the Beast. My parents gave me my first cd when I was 8 or 9 - The Little Mermaid soundtrack. Of course being that cd players were still fairly expensive I wasn't allowed to use it by myself. 12 years later I'm the only one who knows how to use the darn thing .

The first cd I actually bought... I can't remember, but I suspect it may have been by a boy band . Thankfully, I finally got over that phase .

I use to hug my Thriller album. *sigh*. Ooh, and i rememebr Rapture. Was that the video with a fake street and random cool, edgy, hip hop poeple break dancing and stuff. Kinda like a fashion show?

Too bad it wasn't a George Szell directing. Szell was my great uncle. When I was very young (and willing to prove I could be very quiet), I was allowed to sit in Severence Hall whilst the Orchestra practiced.

i have had the chance to hear the cleveland orchestra play (live of course) twice. once in blossom and once in severance hall (when i was in college in cleveland). i got cheap tickets for the severance hall performance through my music class. absolutely wonderful.

What a joy! I grew up in Miami, Oklahoma. Classical music wasn't big there. My Father listened to a 78 rpm record of Mario Lanza singing the music from the movie, "The Great Caruso". He belonged to a Columbia club for a while adding to our meager supply of classical music. I took a music appreciation class and heard the Beethoven recording. I think I was 15 before I heard the 9th Symphony for the first time.

So much beautiful music so little time!

I remember the first vinyl 45 I bought my own self - The Police - Walking on the Moon. Do I still like it? Hell yeah! I also seem to recall buying Adam and the Ants at some point fairly early on - must've got lost somewhere along the line. The best vinyl I had I didn't buy some one gave it to me - it was a 1940 Ella Fitzgerald recording. That I still have. As for cassettes - never really had many of them but I did buy all my Crowded House stuff on tape. Still have them too. Granted they are slightly on the knackered side. First CD, can't really remember but I have a feeling it was probably Catatonia's International Velvet. Or it could have been Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds. One of those two at any rate. All of which I still love.

I realized how things have changed when my 25+year old turntable finally gave up the ghost and I went to Best Buy to look for another one. There were dozens of CD & DVD players, even a few tape decks, and two turntables.

My first LP was either the soundtrack to the Victory at Sea TV series or the 1812 Overture. Got both at the same time, along with my new Sears Silvertone stereo. The first 45 was Pipeline by the Chantays. First 8-track (what's an 8-track, daddy?) was Fire and Rain by James Taylor. First casette and CD? Don't even remember.

Nine Inch Nails: The Downward Spiral. It was 1994 and I was in 4th grade and my mom actually let me buy it. It has the song that goes "I wanna you like an animal." I'm still a fan today. I turned out to be a good kid - I just have a dirty mouth.

Ok I'm too young to have been around for vinyl, but I did inherit my mum's collection which consists of UB40, Hendrix, ACDC, Cold Chisel and some really awesome punk rock.

The very first cassette tape that I bought was the Ninja Turtle soundtrack to the very first movie- anyone else remember the song "Spin That Wheel?"

My first CD that *I* bought, with my allowance was Pearl Jam's Vitalogy, I was 12 and I still have it, and it still plays. they have a great song called "Bugs" I love it!

Hmmm, the 1st tape was I think the Fern Gully Sound Track, cause come on, Tim Curry ROCKS! LOL!! I think my 1st CD I'm shamed to say is the Backstreet Boys single. Wow!! I was a frickin' teenie-bopper!!!! LOL!! I sware, my taste in music has greatly improved.

As for tapes, not sure, and I never owned a record when I was a babe..but I do own one now...a Donna Summers record.

The first cassette tape that I truly loved was ABBA Super Trooper...the first tape I went out and bought with my allowance was Cindy Lauper She's So Unusual..I used to dress up in my grandmother's old 1950's dresses and heels and lip sync to it in front of a big mirror.
I think I was 10 or 11..I still have the dang tape too..
First vinyl record was David Bowie Heroes...and bought at the same time was Sisters of Mercy..
First CD..I think..hmmmm was The Creatures first album..can't remeber the name.
What a neat question to pose..takes you back to those strange days when what you listened to was your life.

Wow...this makes me feel sad...fortunately all of this was far enough in the past to be able to claim adolescent lack of experience =)

First LP - Kiss, Dynasty
First Cassette - Ratt, Out of the Cellar
First CD - Dread Zeppelin...I don't even remember the name of the album. I was all excited because it only came out on CD at the time. Now I'm sure it isn't available anywhere.

I don't think I still have any of them, and I haven't listened to them in at least a decade or more if perchance I do still have them =p

It was 1975, it was my 10th birthday, I got The Captain and Tennille, "Song of Joy" album (on vinyl, of course.) The first album I went into the store and bought with my own money and no parents present was "Saturday Night Fever." I don't listen to either of them any more! Tapes and CDs, who knows???

I started out with my two sisters old LP records like Boston, Kansas, The Who, Todd Rundgren, Supertramp, etc... Hand-me-downs after they got tired of them (I'm the youngest by 5 & 6 years respectively).

The first ones I bought with my own money:

1st LP: Michael Jackson's "Thriller" - Perhaps the last great album he did before he went loony-toons.

1st cassette: Men at Work "Cargo" - Had just got a walkman for my birthday that summer...

1st CD: Seal (1994) - Was using a rented 4x4 SUV, a laptop & GPS unit to make an up to date map of Grant County, WA for their new 911 system (mid 90s' - mapped 3500+ miles of roads over 3 months). Bought a CD walkman, cassette adapter and the CD... Averaging 300 miles a day with only the 1 CD for a few weeks lets you REALY learn every note... The amazing thing is I still like Seal and have collected all of his albums on CD now.

Hmm... WOW! It just dawned on me WHY I simply HAD to have the phatnoise unit for my car. Now I have just over 650 CDs worth of mp3s on a hard disk attached to the sterio. I can drive for months without ever hearing a repeat (or comercial) unless I want to.

2nd CD: Men at Work "Cargo" Had to update cause the tape got stretched and wierd sounding. Just had to have a good copy of the song "No Sign of Yesterday". I must have listened to that 100 times on the cassette after I got dumped. Looking back, it was silly kid stuff but it still hurt. Now the whole album just brings back good memories of that summer.

The first record I ever bought was either Ram by Paul and Linda McCartney or Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles (I threw away those stupid cutouts, of course!). This was about 1971 or 1972. I still have those records today. I would listen to them more often, but Sgt Pepper is worn and Ram is trashed. (If I only knew then what I know now!)

The first CD I bought was Breakfast in America by Supertramp and Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. Circa 1988. I still listen to them, and of course they are in PERFECT shape.

NEVER bought a cassette album. The quality was inconsistent and averaged somewhere around "bad". (I still have some recordings I made of some of my records when they were new. Maxell UDXL-II, no Dolby, Akai GXC-706D deck. They are still in remarkably good shape, considering that some of them are coming up on 28 years old...)

NEVER had 8 track. Dodged that bullet.

I love Men At Work...I remember playing Lego's with my best friend, Eric (my neighbor) who brought over a couple of records...that was the summer of "Electric Avenue" and ..."what the hell is a vega-mite sandwich"
I miss those innocent days....*sigh*

On the plus side..I have introduced my 14yr old son to some great 70's & 80's....including his new favorite the 1984 movie "Breakin'"

I still have the vinyl records, though mainly as keepsakes since I also have the albums on CD. I'm sure the Thriller casette is somewhere in my mother's garage, but I havn't listened to it in 15 years. The CD I sold ages ago, though I still like the Alice in Chains song on it.

The first vinyl single I ever bought was "Making Your Mind up" by Bucks Fizz (I was 11 at the time).

The first vinyl album was "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits. (one of the best albums ever made!)

The first album (cassette) was Wham, Make It Big. (I plead insanity - I was a teenager)

The First CD was Queen Greatest Hits. (I was beginning to replace my cassette collection with CD)

I don’t really remember.

I can only say that the Star Wars theme on 45 was one of my first. I don’t remember where I got it. I just remember being so thrilled to have it, and I listened to it all the time.

Alvin and the Chipmunks country music album might have been my first full length vinyl, but I don’t remember. It was a Christmas gift. We didn’t have money to buy that kind of stuff, so I didn’t own very many albums that I actually would have chosen to own. I just had what people gave me, sometimes as a gift, but mostly just to get rid of it. So when I was in my adolescent phase (10-13), when most other kinds my age were listening to Madonna or Michael Jackson, I was listening to songs like “Yellow Rose of Texas,” “Lone ranger theme,” “Red River Valley,” “The Road and Miles to Dundee,” or “The Town I Loved So Well.”

I was probably the only kid in my school who knew all the words to “Red River Valley” or “the Road and the Miles to Dundee.”

But I had other music too. Stuff by Waylon Jennings, the Eagles, John Denver, Johnny Cash, Jim Reves, Kenny Rogers, John Schneider (the Duke boy)...

For not having actually bought an album I certainly had a large library, come to think of it.

But it was many years before I actually bought an album of my own choosing, and that was Billy Joel's Greatest Hits.

I think I was 30 before I bought or even owned a CD, and that was Garbage.

I can't believe someone else remembered that movie!

funny story..when I was 12 one of our teachers' brothers' had a part in the movie (no-name extra kinda thing) so she got a video right as it was hitting theatres. So for gym class not only did we get to watch the movie..but they also decided to teach us break dancin'.
...so there we all were on our little cardboard squares..all 23 of us white, midwest crackers..learnin' the moves.
..it was the best of times..it was the worst of times....

No Laughing at me! My first any format of album that I bought. I had to special order. It was the soundtrack to Paint Your Wagon. The movie from the '60s. Starring Clint Eastwood and Lee Marving singing. I was 11 and it was 1991.

Yes I am a dork, and a nerd. I still love musicals and Clint Eastwood was really hot in 1969 even if he had no butt.

Dire Straits -- Brothers in Arms (I have bought 3 copies of that album in various formats.)

GF Handel --- Music for the Royal Fireworks
GF Handel --- Water Music

First Single record bought with my own money (as opposed to having it bought for me) "Rubber Ball by Bobby Vee"

First cassette, Clannad -- Legend about the time I bought my first walkman prior to that I'd only used Cassettes to record radio shows.

I remember getting A Chipmunk Christmas on cassette one year when I was about 8.
The first vinyl LP I remember buying was Wham's Make It Big, and I think I also bought Duran Duran's Arena on cassette around the same time.
The last vinyl I purchased before turning to CD's was the 45 for Faith No More's Epic.

YES!!! another Boingophile Browncoat exists! Good lord, that's a weird combo. Got into Elfman as a result of my Nightmare Before Christmas obsession. Don't have QUITE all the CDs yet, but I'm working on some of the rarities and even have an ALIVE '89 t-shirt I paid WAY too much for at a vintage place.

Shiny! Firefly and Boingo are two things that really define who I am, both are relatively obscure interests, and I think it's awesome when there is overlap.

Not a dork at all, in my book! My older sister and I went to the theater to see Paint Your Wagon and we sat through it twice. That was sometime in 1970 (took a while for the movie to come to our Nebraska backwater). Later, my sister bought the album, and to this day I still love the movie and can sing all the songs on it.

The first LP I ever bought was several years prior to that -- The Beatles second album. I'm officially in the "old geezer" demographic.

Most recent CD purchase: Soundtrack to Firefly. :)

You guys, never be ashamed of the music you like.
A lot of the music I like gets me a lot of grief from other people, but I continue to listen to it.

I love Karen Carpenter, Doris Day, Buddy Holly, Barbra Striesand (thet spelled right?) and most classicals. I also have a large appetite for movie soundtracks. There is no such thing as being a "dork" for listening to the music that makes you feel good, so don't call yourself that.

So far, what I've read in this thread, you people seem to have good taste in music, so I must be hanging around the right crowd.
