XII. Red Dwarf

i. What the heck is this?
One of the marketing tactics (based on our experience that the majority of sci-fi fans enjoy Firefly if they give it a decent chance) is to recommend the Firefly DVD set to fans of other sci-fi tv series using Amazon's Customer Advice feature. The item that has the highest number of recommendations is featured on the product front page. Amazon rightly discourages the blatent wholesale plugging of DVDs so, if you are so inclined, pick one DVD set whose fans you think would also like Firefly and recommend it. If you're bored next week, pick one more and repeat.

You need an Amazon account through which you have placed at least one order. You also need the ASIN code for Firefly, which can be found on the Firefly DVD page (link on home page of this site) near the end of the "Product detals" section. Go to the DVD page for which you want to recommend Firefly and click on the "Recommend an item" link and follow the directions. There are two types of recommendations you can make: "in addition to" and "instead of". All of the information in this log refers to "in addition to" recommendations. Personal preference.

The entries have the following information
* NAME
-#1 #2 #3 - [NAME2]

NAME - the title of the DVD page
* - presence of this before the name indicates the Firefly DVD is ranked second or lower
#1 - Rank of the Firefly DVD
#2 - Number of recommendations for Firefly DVD
#3 - Number of recommendations for next DVD (If Firefly is not ranked first this number is the recommendations of the highest ranked title. If Firefly is ranked first this number is the recommendations for the second highest ranked title)
NAME2 - title of highest rank DVD (if other than Firefly)

This is intended more in the way of an archive rather than a call to arms. I'll be updating this periodically as I add new shows whose fans I personally think would enjoy learning about Firefly.

Now that the first phase is completed, I'll only be updating the information in this blog entry, via the comments, on a weekly basis. This takes about ten minutes (thanks to Firefox's feature of allowing a folder of bookmarks to be opened as tabs, collecting all the relevent links for each group in those bookmarked folders, and having the numbers on a handy one-page printout) but I've found, over the past three weeks, that the numbers do not change with a high frequency.

Yeah, good point.

I did a log post instead of a thread and used tinyurl links rather than going direct to try and limit the number of recommendations coming through at once but it still might draw attention. So maybe the best thing is, if you're interested in doing this, hold off for a while.

I'll also wait a few days before I add the next set of links.
