Assuming, as it seems most of us are that Book and Inara are regular passengers, and not necessarily crew, this makes River the passenger with a past, and Mal, Zoe, Wash, Jayne, Kaylee and Simon the Six Rebels on the Run.

hmm, never looked at it that way, jus picked Kaylee as the other to not be a rebel since her main function is to run the engine, but u could say the saem on Wash, so 7 minus 2, works out nicely.

Remember, the movie rehashes everything that happened since the Battle of Serenity (and maybe more). That bit is probably for the people who haven't seen the show. So the original 6 are most likely the 6 rebels, and the others are still considered passengers.

Actually, by Simonwho's calculation that would leave 7 (there are 9 core cast members). I've actually pondered this question more than I should. I've come up with two competing scenarious.

1. Core Crew Theory
Mal, Inara, Jayne, Zoe, Wash, and Kaylee are the six rebels. Excluding Simon, River and Book who could just be passengers.

2. Crew Role
Arguably, due to their past connections, we could assume that we should exclude Inara and Book from the six. Additionally while they fly on Serenity, they don't officially do anything on the ship. Since River really doesn't have an assigned role, apart resident genius and dangerous passenger, she might be the other contender.

Just my thoughts on this troubling question.

The trailer states one dangerous passenger (presumably River) and 6 rebels on the run. We also know from the series that Inara was leaving the ship which just leaves one of the regulars not to be on board.
