Ethics Poll
Tuesday, June 28, 2005

Okay, I have a serious question, and I want honest answers. I do not want all you wonderful people to tell me what you think I want to hear.

I went to the doctor for my usual checkup. I am now measuing at about 40 weeks. (I'm very pregnant for anyone who hasn't read any of my other whiny blogs) Anyway, since I'm having multiples, I'm larger than normal. I'm really only at 27 weeks, and I'm only goign to get bigger, heavier, and more uncomfortable. If I were carrying a singleton. measuring at 40 weeks would mean I could deliver at any time, however I still have a couple of months to go.

Anyway, when I offhandedly complained about walking the length of parkinglots in the 100F degree summer heat, my doc gave me a prescription for a temporary tag to use disabled parking.

Should I be thrilled, go redeem my prescription for a tag, and enjoy the awsome parking? Should I tough it out and walk the length of the parking lots and count my blessings that I am not, infact, disabled? Would I be taking an unfair advantage?

I ask, because browncoats have seemed to be the most ethical and smart people in the verse. What are your ideas?

Chiming in late, but with a slightly different opinion. I don't see this is as an ethical quandary, but a question of what is healthy for you. Get the permit, but don't use it yet.

Exercise is key to staying healthy while pregnant. Walking is excellent exercise when pregnant. If you don't have a medical condition that makes walking inadvisable, you should walk at every opportunity.

I know it is frickin' hot and I can only begin to imagine how miserable it is to be heavily pregnant -- with twins no less -- in this heat. (My own son was born in December, and I remember feeling too warm all the time even then.) But that completely understandable desire to stay indoors and off your feet, if it's not medically indicated by high blood pressure or preterm labor, etc., is not going to help you stay healthy and carry those sweet babies to term.

Now, if you're getting regular exercise in some other context (I heartily recommend swimming and yoga, myself), feel free to tell me to shut it.

Oh, and the reason I say get the permit now but don't use it is that it would be handy, if medical concerns do arise later in the pregnancy, to already have the permit ready to go -- one less errand at what would surely be a trying time, IYKWIM.

While I'm kibbutzing and offering advice, may I ask if you are planning to breastfeed and if you know about La Leche League?

I'll be quiet now, unless spoken to of course! Be well!

Use it. If not for your sake, for the babies'. They need a happy, healthy mom.

JOSSISAGOD

I'm with all other posts, on this one, USE it until you no longer need it and then turn it in, after the delivery.(SP) Then, if you see someone who doesn't need a handicapped spot, give them a reason to need one.
also, take good care of those future Joss whedon fans of yours.

*sheepish grin* Okay, I get it. I should use the temp tag.
I guess I keep hearing in the back of my head my father lecturing, "you're not the only woman on Earth to get pregnant with twins. Quit your whining."
Thanks for letting me know that it is not unethical for me to accept this.

Use it. By gosh, woman, you're carrying a heavy burden there. There's no sense in harming yourself or your babies. When it's over and done with, turn the tag back in and it's all good.

Conclusion: Use it.

Explination: I'm one of those people that think that those pink parking spots are a ridiculous idea. I mean, come on, women have been having babies time immemorial and the vast majority have no issues at all.

Now that being said, if you're already at the size, etc of a full term expectant mother and have that much time to go, and/or if you have temporary ailments due to the pregancy that seriously are effecting you, you get a temporary handicap parking tag and bloody well use it.

No harm, no foul.

Use it. If you were in perfect health and had a broken arm (or something else that wouldn't affect your mobility) I'd say no. But pregnancy is tough! You are NOT taking unfair advantage of your situation.
Now if you keep using the tag after the young 'uns arrive, we may have to start talking about the Special Hell! But until then, use it.
