Firefly Fan Fiction
Thursday, August 18, 2005

Hi I was thinking of writing fan fiction. Is it fun? easy? should I create a character? I heard people tend to not like it when people create characters.

I'll try to write something soon.

Word of advice.

I fully recommend writing fan fiction, especially for a show like FIREFLY, since while it did have a short run, it laid enough ground to endlessly riff off of. In a way, writing fanfics is the fans way of keeping the show going on in our own minds.

But if you do have an idea for a fanfic, try to have it fully written or at least thought out in your mind before posting it. My main story, YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN, I have a ton of stuff thought out and written, but it's not finalized, since I've hit a bit of an impasse.

I plan on spending all of this weekend writing the whole goddamn thing in one go. But I might have to repost the first three chapters since it's been nearly four months since I last posted. It helps if you have a ton of time on your hands. Summer tends to suck up all of your time and energy, I find.

As for creating new characters, go right ahead. If you want to make it easy on you, just write yourself into the series and embellish a bit. That's what I did with THE SERENITY GIG and the character of Shooter.

Can't wait to see what you have in mind.

Peace

Fun? Yes! Easy? That depends. Some people can just write a thousand words straight off the bat without needing to go back and re-edit at all. Others have to slave away at individual sentences until it is just so.

You should create characters as every episode of Firefly introduced someone new (however briefly). All you need to do is avoid Mary Sue characters:

Other than that, go for it, good luck and looking forward to reading it!
