The WB shouldn't pull a "Firefly" with Angel
Saturday, February 14, 2004

I don't get why the WB wouldn't renew Angel. So ratings may have dropped, but that doesn't mean they should cancel it or whatever. Their decision doesn't just effect American viewers, but the rest of the world as well. There are people who watch Angel outside of the U.S. and the ratings are probably great. If no more new episodes are made, then what the heck happens to the viewers that live in Canada, the U.K., everywhere else? People are buying the Angel DVDs, too. If they weren't, why keep putting them out if there isn't any interest?

Perhaps the WB didn't follow what happened to Firefly. So a show may not be drawing the viewers, but that doesn't mean the show doesn't have fans. FOX cancelled Firefly and look where it is now: phenomenal DVD sales and a possible movie deal in the works.

What about the other shows on the WB? Just because Angel doesn't have teen angst coming out the wazoo like certain shows, Smallville and One Tree Hill come to mind, it doesn't mean it's not good television. I mean, Charmed just go renewed for a seventh season. Have you seen some of their episodes lately? Not exactly deep stuff when compared to Angel's latest episode "Why We Fight".

I suppose there's always the chance that UPN might jump at the opportunity to pick up Angel like they did with Buffy. Of course that doesn't help me since I don't get UPN, but that's really not the point. We should show the WB that Angel is a show worth keeping. Lettering writing campaigns have worked before. Just look at Star Trek; they got cancelled and some fan started writing letters and look where the franchise is now. Forever Knight, another show about a vampire fighting to redeem himself, had over a year between its first and second season, but fans pulled it back from cancellation.

Please WB. Don't let another good show waste away.

BADGERSHAT

So well-written shows like "firefly" and "Angel" get canned, but Fox decides they're going to re-make "Mister Ed" with the guy from "The Jeffersons"... what the hairy hell is going on here???

Well, I wouldn't say the WB has pulled a "Firefly" with Angel. Since picking it up they've only moved it once and have never had to pre-empt for sports. And five full seasons is a far cry from 13 episodes, 3 of which never saw air time.

Five seasons is a pretty shiny run for any non "reality" series these days, and damn shiny for a sci-fi series in particular. It's already lasted one season longer than FarScape, and Angel will get an actual ending instead of an infuriating cliffhanger (FarScape

As an Angel fan who still misses Doyle, I can sympathize with your heartbreak, but this isn't entirely unexpected. At least Angel had a decent run and stayed true.

Exactly! See, cancelling Angel is their way of trying to imitate that success!

I am a rabid Angel fan, I have always liked it - perhaps even more than Buffy. It has a solid cast, excellent writing and an exciting premise and each year it seems to get better and better. I am disappointed it is going away, but what I think everyone on this board (and others) seems to forget, is that show's GET CANCELLED - it's the way it goes. Some sooner, some later, but even Angel can't live forever.

And sad as it may be, having FANS doesn't always equate to $$$$ for the network, and that is the bottmo line. Viwership and advertising dollars.

Great shows die all too soon - bad shows casn run forever - it's $$$$

So love Angel while you can, buy those DVD's and be happy you had it for 5 seasons, it's 5 more than some shows got. LOL
