May have been the losing side...
Saturday, October 22, 2005

There's a discussion over on the main page about how we've lost the war for the box office with this movie. http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=14173

Isn't that ironic? A sort of poetic irony to keep "losing" with this story.

There has been some debate over whether the dvd sales will do anything for keeping the story going. The logic being that if we couldn't get people out to see it in the theater they won't know to buy it. And become obsessive little browncoats like the rest of us. And without dollar signs, no Hollywood executives will back another movie, tv show, etc.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking back a few years to what I still remember as "The Gladiator Christmas." I remember it that way because it seemed like Gladiator was the obligatory gift that year. Of the ones that were flying around the gift giving circles I'm pretty sure we got at least two at our house.

Well, this year the obligatory gift is Serenity. I had announced to my husband two days ago, when I confirmed that the dvd was coming out before Christmas, that I "knew what everyone was getting this year." At least every sci-fi or almost sci-fi fan (thank God my family is rife with them). And all those occassions when you have to bring a "wrapped mystery gift." This will be "The Serenity Christmas" in my book. (Apply Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, etc. as suits your needs.)

Niska said to Mal, "...you are quite a man. An extraordinary man. Yes. But these are not times for extraordinary men." Now, ya'll know that ain't true. You know in your heart, don't you, that the ultimate end of our story arc is that the Alliance is brought to it's knees and our Browncoats are proven to be the righteous ones. The same will be true with getting the story told. We just have to hold out a little bit longer.

JayTee - Although ST:TMP was disappointing at the time (and heck, I was 9 years old so what did I know? just because I'd been a fan for 9 years already...) I found that with 50 or 60 viewings it becomes an acceptable part of the oeuvre.

StakeTheLurk - Don't take my point as dissing *you*. I very carefully said it was the discussion. There was a good deal more negativity in the thread than was to my liking. Meanwhile, thanks for dropping by and making your case again.

Um, being the person who posted the thread you mentioned, I should say my whole point was to say that we *haven't* lost. And that we need to *make* this Christmas a "Serenity Christmas," as you say.

My only other point, was how we can't take for granted that the "Serenity Christmas" will happen on its own. We, the browncoats, need to go out and do everything we can to make sure the sales are high--converting more browncoats and posting guerrilla marketing. I think the BDM will be the gift of choice this year, but we have to *make* it so by spreading the word. Our less-than-stellar box office performance has shown we can't just assume the masses will find the BDM on their own; they need a nudge or two. That's what the thread was supposed to be about.

I keep thinking how the original Star Trek only ran 3 seasons or such and how disappointed the fan base was when it got cancelled. It took years before there was a movie made and as fan or trekker I was deeply disappointed in the first ST movie. With Firefly I didn't get to catch enough of the actual broadcasts before the series was cancelled. I watched the first broadcast, "The Train Job" and liked it. I didn't get to see another episode until I got to see "Out of Gas". When SCI FI started broadcasting it and showed Serenity 1&2 first first I went right out and bought the DVDs. I was hooked. Now I won't say there wasn't at least one letdown in the movie Serenity but overall it was EXCELLENT. No one tells a story and paints such a rich canvas of places and characters all believable like Joss Whedon does. Movie studio execs look at movies like this and don't get excited because there aren't any "cute" droids or other toy spinoff potentials. No deals with Burger King or Mickey D's to sweeten the old profit pot. In order to get real substance in entertainment like one season of Firefly and Serenity we have to endure a thousand lame insults to our intellects like JarJar Binks and DS-9. It may take a few years but eventually there will be a sequel and maybe a new spinoff series.

meangoldfish - That's what I've been given to understand. I guess a fast-track for profit. December 20 is the date I've seen. I'd like it before that for all those gifts I have to ship...

LightMeDark - My husband grew up in Upstate so I learned that there is "The City" and "the rest of New York" from him. He bounced around a bit in his youth and was actually born in Oklahoma.

I think it was Jeff Foxworthy who pointed out that there are rednecks everywhere. Content yourself with pretending that they are just rough people from one of the moons of the 'Verse and maybe you'll make it through...

Haha, nice. I live in Western New York currently (yes, people here capitalize Western). It is not at all what most people think of when they see the words New York. I've lived many places (raised as an army brat) including Germany four times and many places in the south. My favorite place so far has been Oklahoma. I think it's having family near by here that keeps me from returning there.

One thing I've found amusing here is the number of rednecks. I've lived (and visited) many places that are considered to be rife with them, but nothing comes close. I also have to mention that this is the most economically depressed area I've ever lived in, as well. Oh, and now that I'm ranting, moral direction and the like seem to be gleaned from a badly miscalibrated compass.

Ok, enough of the rant ;D I've got Firefly, you can't take the sky from me.

Sci-fi depressed? That's an entertaining phrase. I'm interested to know where you are because so many of the places I've lived - throughout the south - embrace sci-fi. Here in Central Virginia Serenity was packed all the times I saw it, except for the one viewing in an outlying area.

Everyone in my family at least has an appreciation for sci-fi. My Dad is one of the bigger sci-fi fans and his review of one movie that we thought completely sucked was a sigh and "Well, at least it was science fiction..." Give the man some space ships, some special effects, and he's happy.

I never noticed anything like a "Gladiator Christmas," but I'm definitely fine with having this be one of the Serenity variety...unfortunately, there are very few people that I know that like sci-fi (in fact, this has to be one of the most sci-fi depressed areas in the country, heh).
