That damn opening song...
Saturday, October 29, 2005

I know I'm gonna be blasted for this but here goes anyway...I don't really care for the song that opens Firefly up...and it's not that I don't care for the lyrics...the lyrics are poetry at its most simple and beautiful...they're about freedom and inner peace and strength...I just don't like the music it's being sung too, although it fits the series perfectly...*sighs*...yes I know fellow Browncoaters, it's blasphemous...I almost feel as if I'm betraying my loyalty to the show by saying it...but that it is how I feel...but on a good note...the lyrics can bring tears to your eyes!
"pretty cunning, don't cha' think?"

For those that actually like the theme song, you may also like Harry Manx. You can listen to clips of his music at http://www.harrymanx.com

I have most of his albums and seen him in concert a couple of times. He mixes Indian music with American Blues. Not exactly the more bluegrass feel of firefly, but similar.

You really haven't heard Purple Haze until you've heard it played on 6-string banjo. Seriously.

I am confused. You like the lyrics but not the tune. OK, I can see that. But a song IS the lyrics.

I have found myself humming the song at work. To quote:"How weird is that?"

The guitar part of the series music is played with resonator-styled guitar sound, which is a relatively new invention. Well past the time of 'The Old West'.

But it fits perfectly, which is the genius of Greg Edmonson.

I love the sound of sloppy slide on a Dobro neck.

I guess that everyones entitled to there opinion. Yours is just wrong. Just kidding ;)

It's all an opinion thing. I didn't like it really at first (though I didn'g mind it), but it grew on me and now I like it. Maybe you will too one day.

If not, to each his [her] own, eh :)

I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you on this thread, I liked the song so much I used the memo feature on my cell phone to record it and turn it into a ringtone! After legally obtaining it through the DVD's of course.
Also, the song is stuck in my head 24/7/365.

Here is my take on the song...

The lyrics sound like they were written by a third-grader.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that because that is why you can remember it so well.

Most memorable songs are that way. Simple lyrics and hooks will keep a song in your head. AC/DC has made a living doing this.

...not that anyone asked me....

It's a good thing I don't feel that way since the blasted song is stuck in my head 24/7. Actually, I don't mind at all.
