Firefly: The Board Game - Ready to Play!
Friday, March 5, 2004

In the event that you've missed my previous blog entries or the short-lived thread, I've developed a board game based on Firefly. It's a cooperative game for 1-9 people, ages 12 and up.

Players take the part of one or more of the Firefly crew, facing the same challenges and dangers that the crew faced in each of the 14 episodes. Strategy comes in the form of when and where to use special crew cards unique to each crewmember and how to manage the money gained from jobs to keep Serenity flying. The ultimate goal is to help each of the crewmembers reach a state of serenity.

You can print it out at home on your colour inkjet onto cardstock, or even onto standard paper, if you don't mind playing with thin paper cards. It's free (with the printing and the addition of a few easily found markers and dice), it's based on our favourite space-western, and it's a great way to see how well you'd do compared to our intrepid crew in the same life-or-death situations.

The number of people testing has grown to over two dozen, and the list keeps getting bigger. We've had some great feedback already, and if you're looking for a cheap way to entertain yourself and a few fellow Browncoats this weekend, give it a try.

Based on input I've received from fellow playtesters, I've already begun work on a new board game, which will take a very different approach. I'm very happy with the current board-game, but this new one will appeal to a different set of skills and allow players to captain a Firefly-class Midbulk Transport of their own. More details on that game as it develops. In the meantime, if you haven't already, give this one a whirl!

KOZURE

A few vignetters from some playtesting sessions this weekend...

In a little twist on the "Bushwhacked" story, it was Jayne, rather than Mal, who went in after the survivor. The player controlling Jayne, taking no chances, played his "Arsenal" card, giving him a number of extra dice to use in his fight against the deranged Survivor.

The duel between Atherton Wing and Mal came down to the very last round, with every legally playable card trick coming out to prevent him from being killed. In the end, Mal was victorious, but collapsed from his wounds and had to be nursed back to health for the entire R & R phase and the first interlude of the next Tale.

Later, in negotiations with Patience on Whitefall, Mal avoided the fight altogether by using his "Gunpoint Negotiations" card to push the negotiations just over the edge of success. It seemed like a fun "alternate history" version of the Serenity tale. In escaping the Reavers later in the tale, Kaylee (who, quite randomly, but appropriately, had been shot by Dobson) used both "Captain Dummy Talk" and "It's Real Simple" to help Book make the "Full Burn in Atmo" check.

FORRESTWOLF

Great job! It's interesting that there are SEVERAL different game development efforts underway, all getting posted around the same time.

I know I'll be downloading it myself.

SAINT JAYNE

I'm looking forward to this! I just hope I can find some other fans in Calgary to play - or convert a bunch! Kozure, you're efforts will be enjoyed by thousands.
