Notes on the new technique
Friday, January 13, 2006

I've been trying a new high tech style for the last few drawings as opposed to a more fluid inking style.. You all seem to like it well enough, so a little about it: It's essentially my wash style but I add a few more steps at the computer... mainly a few home made half tone screens applied then merged down..sometimes it comes out ok and others the pattern it makes with the inked line has a super-jarring effect.
Annoying biographical pause (for those interested) I was born in Saint Louis, Mo. in 1958.. Discovered comics at an early age thanks to the Adam West Batman series... Moved west in 1974 and here I remain...Ive always been good at drawing and even sent off some portfolio's to marvel and dc in the early eighties..And was summarily turned down flat..I still have the rejection letters around some where..Life continued and I lost interest in art for almost 20 years..Then fate steps in and I injured my knee on the job in 2004 (complete tear of the ACL and a partial tear of the PCL) which laid me up for nine months. With nothing better to do I got back into art...and here I am. Oh, and I discovered Firefly and you guys .
Thank for letting me ramble... now back to your regularly scheduled fanfic

Raised in Mo. too, mphillips. Still here. I was born in 1957 and grew up reading my uncles comics while staying with my Grandma.... I love the style of comics so much.

You are just so good, and we are blessed to have you with us, making these treasures for us. Thanks!

Your "My Turn" is really a sight to behold. Excellent work. It's unusual to see someone capture both the realism and the intangible "feel" of a scene so well.

I was inspired by comics at an early age as well and did a lot of drawing into my teens. Actually minored in art in college, but by that point my focus was already moving toward writing.

Looking at your stuff makes me want to start drawing again. I've always been one of those people where inspiration turns into creativity (and that's certainly the case with Firefly), but said creativity just has so many outlets these days, what with fic writing and vids.

Maybe I'll just be content admiring your work. Sure is fun.
