On the subject of Firefly, in comparison with 1984. And more word fun!
Thursday, March 25, 2004

Word fun first.

A group of fireflies is called a conflagration. A conflagration is a big fire. Interesting, no?

A group of foxes is called a skulk. To skulk is to lurk.

Words are fun.

Now, onto 1984.

In Shindig, Mal says something like: "I understand how, I just ain't getting the why."

In 1984, Winston writes in his diary: "I understand HOW; I don not understand WHY."

Blue Sun- Blue Sun reminds me of Big Brother. River chose to go to the Alliance school. Maybe the school is like the Ministry of Love.

These are just thoughts of a bystander. They may be wrong, they may be right.

PINGJING

Dracos - you bring up a point that I have been wondering for a long time. How *do* we know that Blue Sun is behind the 2x2 guys? I realized that I have no idea what episode gave me this idea. I think what happened is, I came to this site, and people were talking about Blue Sun = blue hands. I thought, yeah, that makes sense, and ever since then, I just accepted that as the truth. But is there anything in the show that tells us that for sure?

Sorry for the hijack, TeelaB. I loved your word associations :)

ZATHRAS

Howdy ... been absent from the forum for a while, and came across an old reply to a post ("Drinking Game") in one of my e-mail folders.

Just wanted to say that when I joined the forum, I *ALMOST* chose "Speaker to Animals" as my handle ... I used to use it years ago, but recently I've been sticking with "Zathras", maybe because I'm bi-polar. :-)

It's been 40 years since I read "1984" (same year I read "Brave New World" and "Animal Farm"), so I think it's time to do it again ... I wish I could get the Edmund O'Brien version of the film from 1956 ... liked it much better than the John Hurt remake in 1984.

Yeah, I'm 54, and I have the "Peter Pan Gene" (sleep all day, party all night, never grow old, never die), so I think that "arrested development" is a Good Thing ... "Firefly" speaks to my inner child, who (unfortunately) usually has access to the credit cards, which would explain why I've bought *THREE* copies of the DVD set ... so far!

I love that. Brings up a story.

I was at school, and my friend went to the Incubus website. There were little drawings of crows all over. I asked: "What's with the crows?" She replied: "They're new CD, 'A Murder Left of the Crow'." I said immeadiatly said: "Oh, like a murder of crows?" Another random friend of the first friend: "Oh, yeah, she gets it right away while we have to ask our mom."

That's all. Sorry bout the story.

HP- Wonder why my first sig quote is a quote from 1984. Since I read that quote, and saw the show, it reminded me of Mal and his dreams and such.

Dracos- We have little proof for anything. Just my connections.

I know Blue Sun would never be as bad Big Brother. If it was, they wouldn't be doing so much before something happened. I was just noting similarities. As I said, I may be wrong.

The word association comes from a book called "An Exaltation of Larks". Around 300 pages of group names.

HP, no, your not. I've been seeing for a while. I finally got around ot blogging it.

HOTPOINT

So I wasn't the only person who saw 1984 staring at me out of the script then?

* * *

'Always worried that the Alliance was going to go “1984” on us big-time, so I kept a few rucksacks packed in case we had to head for the hills. Same reason I’ve got a few thousand in platinum and Ally Script with me too’ Steven shook his head and smirked slightly ‘Paranoia’ he said. ‘The gift that keeps on giving’

‘1984?’ Mal asked.

River spoke up ‘Literary reference from Earth-That-Was. Novel about a dystopian totalitarian future’ she paused ‘Good read but in my opinion far too optimistic. If you want a vision of the future imagine men in blue gloves carving up your brain not stamping on your face’

I think Blue Sun is going to end up not being that bad. I mean, how much proof do we really have that Blue Sun is behind all of what's going on? The two by two guys sure but do we know they're BS? Would the Alliance really let an over-glorified soda company just take highly sensetive prisoners and fly away with them? I'm just not sure that our assumptions are right.

Interesting stuff in the word association bit though, I've always liked that. Oh, and sorry 'bout the rant.
