I'm not a geek am I?
Thursday, March 25, 2004

As i was sitting in math class today i had the sudden and startiling realization today that i am a geek.

I spend all my life on the internet.

When I'm not on the internet I'm doing theatre crap, or reading anime.

I hang out with a fair number of geeky-people.

and to top it all off I'm obsesed with a sci-fi Tv Show.

Now wait, I thought to myself as my Math teacher went on off on a tangent about tangents. Is firefly REALLY a geeky tv show? I mean, all that other stuff is really something that can be ignored, and if you balance it out with all the guitar playing and not geeky stuff that i do, I'm really not that much of a geek, right?

But wait, I am obsessed with this Sci-fi TV show that I quote and wear a stupid hat from. That tips the scale and definatly makes me a geek.

But not if the Sci-fi TV show is Firefly, right?

Because firefly isn't really that sci-fi-y right? So I'm not a geek right?!

right?

I agree. Although, we're not really geeks.
The way I see it, we're just connoisseur's of well made sci-fi shows - with enhanced social skills.
We like to be challenged and entertained. There's no shame in that.

Thank you treon. That is what I was going to say. Geeks are nerds with social skills. We have the brains and the obsessions of geeks but we can have a full conversation with anybody. Case in point. Steve Jobs is a geek. Bill Gates is a nerd.

Oh, side note: when I referred to "The Pretty People," I meant the people who have looks going for them but nothing else. These people tend to be cheerleaders or jocks.

Personally, I think I'm a rather good looking guy, but I do much prefer the internet to, say... jogging. Probably because I'm skinny. But I should jog anyway, it's good for me. Just as soon as I check the rest of the boards....

I'm sorry, I'm tired and sickish today so I didn't read all the other replies, but here's mine:

Firefly requires a little extra-brain-power to appreciate... but Geeky is as Geeky does. The Pretty People always call the rest us geeks... for finding the science of 'Star Trek' interesting, or understanding why horses MIGHT still be used in the future, or honestly knowing, and caring, why 4x+2x=6x.

I always thought Star Trek was rather nifty. Read a lot of sci-fi. In high school, I was a huge geek, or at least, was labeled as one. At college, I had interesting conversations, found people who also liked anime, and had sex a lot.

So it's really all a matter of perspective, isn't it?

magna...anime...all i know is that my freinds forced me to read it and to my utter horror i found myself liking it. I'm halfway through the chobits series and have been for a couple of months because my freind decided she wasn't going to loan me copies anymore.

Join us ebonezer, join uuussssssss....

I'm sure I can out-geek you anyway, I can't resist but point out you're not reading anime, you're reading manga. Anime is animated, manga is the written/drawn form (unless you meant you're reading the subtitles :P)
Just out of curiosity, whatcha reading?

There's nothing wrong in being a geek. I'm a nerd. I've tried to cut all ties to popular people. They hate my guts, but they're trying to be my friend. Maybe my hope of seeming so darkly intelligent is succeading.

Embrace the geek! Love the geek! Be the geek!

Embrace your geek-ness! There's nothing to fear!

I consider myself nerd, because I can hardly use a computer. I can do I what I need to do.

So, if you don't like the word geek, embrace your nerd-ness!
