An Open Letter To The Scheduling Powers That Be
Monday, January 23, 2006

While this is not exactly Firefly/Serenity related, I feel I must address the scheduling mishaps that have happened in this fine TV season, so that other great shows (like Firefly) don't get cancelled for no reason.

To the TV Scheduling "Gods:"

Why, of why, must you make us choose? And why, oh why, must you do things that make no sense?

That us examine the scheduling misfires since September and see if there might be a way to rectify the little problem of keeping quality TV on the air.

1. WB - Supernatural after Gilmore Girls.
While I realize the thought process was to capitalize on a strong Jared Padalecki fan base, the viewers of GG are not going to watch Supernatural (unless you're a little squished in the brainpan, like me). This show would make so much more sense, and be able to capitalize off the rabid Jensen Ackles fan base, by following Smallville on Thursdays at 9pm.

2. WB - Everwood after Smallville
#1 leads perfectly into #2. Coupling Everwood with Smallville is like putting kryptonite next to Superman - not the smartest move. Again, Everwood would do so much better following a show like GG or even putting it back on Mondays at 9pm after 7th Heaven. (Wouldn't it be great, if next season, Everwood could lead off the WB's new Monday now that 7th Heaven has bowed out? Couple Everwood with Related and you've got an unbelievable night of TV.)

3. ABC - Alias vs. just about everything
Poor Sydney - not only does she lose the love of her life and get a new baby in the first episode, but ABC had the audacity to schedule Alias against Smallville. I'm sorry, but while Sydney (aka Jennifer) does kick butt, she cannot fill in for the beautiful Tom Welling. While I'll agree Smallville has been a little spotty so far this season, it still is awesome TV and not a surprise that it took viewers away from Alias. Especially with the departure of the equally yummy Michael Vartan.

4. Fox & UPN - Bones opposite Veronica Mars
Okay, like Firefly, I arrived at the VM party late. I have just started paying attention to this show that obviously rocks for a lot of reasons. Now, in an effort to keep the *beloved* (note: sarcasm) American Idol in it's home time slot, the Fox PTB have moved Bones against VM, forcing me to choose against the gorgeous David Boreanaz and the smartly written VM. Again, how is a girl to choose? I love smart TV, but I love me some DB.

These are just a few of the glaring errors I noted in this season's TV schedule.

And a plug for another season of Firefly - How rockin' would Friday nights be with Firefly at 9pm and Battlestar Galatica at 10pm on SciFi? That is pure marketing gold. (Let's face it, if advertisers can make money off of BG, then can definitely make money off Firefly!)
