Couple Thoughts 'Bout Kaylee (spoilers)
Friday, January 27, 2006

Yeah, I got kind of a crush on Kaylee. I tend to go for the "cute one" on TV and movies anyways, so I wasn't too suprised about it once I started working my way through the episodes. One thing that's new to me however, is the way she kicks my big brother instincts into gear. I won't go into how well-written the character is or how spot-on Jewel Staite's portrayal is, 'cause that's pretty much a given. And it's true of the rest of the crew, as well.

What I find compelling, though, is how my emotional response in certain scenes is a gut reaction to want to protect little Kaylee, keep her out of harm. That bumbling Fed in the Serenity episode got what was coming to him, if you ask me. (And don't even get me started on Early :)

Here's what I've been wondering, though. There is no question that Kaylee's a vital member of the crew, and the Serenity certainly wouldn't be the same without her. I just sometimes wonder if she's a little out of her element. Galavanting around the 'verse with a motley band of thieves and smugglers, so to speak.

She was quite cute with her little pistol in War Stories, but that didn't turn out so well when the going got tough. Of course, one sees later that she can hold her own if properly motivated ("Oh, you mean sex?"), and plenty strong-willed when properly backed-up.

Can't really say that Mal was wrong to bring her on board. Not everyone needs to be a rough-and-tumble, pistol-packin' badass. I rather like in this show that not everyone is. (Besides, Mal, Zoe, Jayne, and of course River, now, are more than capable of taking care of business.)

Anyways, here's the thought that keeps coming back to me. If I was Kaylee's older brother, would I have let her run off with this band of miscreants? I still haven't made up my mind. Maybe that was the best shot she'd have at a better life. Would I have had a choice? I imagine she was a little hell-raiser back on her home planet...

Still, if I ever get around to trying my hand at some fan-fiction that might make an interesting little vignette. Kaylee's brothers show up and try to bring her back to home and safety. (Course I'm just assuming she even had any older siblings, but, you know... tomboy and all... I always had a hunch she was from a largish family.)

More random nonsense from nuclearday. Some people like to post their thoughts. I like to vomit them. :P

SPINWARD

Speaking from the girl-side, she's so down to earth. She's the one I'd call on Saturday morning and say "Let's go to the Waffle house." Or ask her to teach me how to change my oil.

She's not intimidating to guys and fairly relatable to girls. At least this one. Inara would scare me, River...hmmm, not knowing how Serenity truned out, I'd be more likely to protect River than Kaylee.

'Sides, she has a southern name like she could be my cousin from Tennessee! :)

JAYTEE

Call it what you will but I kinda like your regurgitation. I have to agree with you about Kaylee although at my age I feel more like a protective uncle or step-dad but I can't help but find her character's honest, sometimes innocent and charming personality coupled with her adorable face with a dab of engine grease here and there just "simply irresistable". That doesn't mean that River and Inara are slouches. Inara is so beautiful and sophisticated which I don't dislike but it can kinda intimidate the average guy. River is an enigmatic character and despite her talents and beauty I tend to stay away from the "dangerous" types. Still think Summer Glau should've gotten an Emmy or Oscar nod for her performance. But there's just no way around it, Kaylee is my fave. I just wanna hug her and keep her happy and safe whenever I watch an episode or two.
