The tango vid is finished. If you are interested, you can check it out on my homepage (http://www.jutta-jordans.de then click FanVideos) or download it with the direct link:

or for a smaller version

It uses the XVid codex and a Windows Media Audio layer, a combination that seems to be a bit problematic with most players, but it was the only way I could get the soundbits to the right frames (mostly) and still get a decent compression. WinAmp gave me the best results when playing this vid, the Windows Media Player works, too, the VLC Player, normally my fallback solution for all media problems, messes up the sound for some reason.

Anyway, check it out and comment if you like.

And now for something completely different: Battlestar Galactica the new series is finally in German free TV. I watched part 2 of the mini series tonight (I missed part 1). Well, what am I to say now? I am not a friend of remakes. The old series was cool as it was. I loved it as a teenager, it was the first fandom I was ever involved in, even before I discovered StarWars. I loved Richard Hatch as Apollo and of course Dirk Benedict as Starbuck. I read all the novels to it, I have seen all episodes more often than I care to tell and I wrote my first fanfiction stories about life on the Galactica.

Now everything is polished up a little. Galactica always had great ship designs and with today's special effects they truely shine. But they changed so many things... worst of all: Starbuck is a woman now. Say what? Starbuck? Hero of my childhood memories! A woman! It just does not work for me. She still smokes cigars, though Baltar is cool. More complex than the old character. Better looking, too. But tell me one thing: if they changed everything anyway, why could they not give Boxey a new haircut? Poor boy. He looks like the last relict from the 70s.

I am not convinced yet, maybe I never will be. I will give the series another chance, though. Wednesday night the regular series will start and be on a weekly basis.

Television sucks more and more. I had not watched any prime time programms for quite a while, mainly sticking to DVDs. It is bad enough that they have commercial breaks every twenty minutes or so and that those breaks get longer and longer, now they also put all kinds of programm announcements and ring tone advertisments etc. in the subtitles. It really pisses me off.

2X2

Stick with it! The miniseries is no where near as good as it gets.. I too was put off a bit by Starbuck being a woman, but I really like her character now... I'm soooo into this show, you really really should give it a chance.. this is, imho, the best thing on tv right now... I'm watching Season 2 (d/l american eps as I'm in canada) and it is just fabulous.. they force the characters to make the really difficult decisions, and nothing is black and white, it's all shades of grey..

I too was a fan of the original series, back when it was on... had a hard time watching it as an adult tho... but I am loving this new incarnation...

Seriously, stick with it for a few episodes, by the end of season one you'll be completely hooked!

STAKETHELURK

Definitely give it a chance. I’ve only gotten into it recently myself, on DVD, and I’ve raced through the one and a half seasons that are out so far. I think it’s definitely the best SF show on television right now and one of the best in years. One thing I really appreciate about the show is that, just like “Firefly,” it’s committed to producing a sense of realism. Realistic physics, no genre clichés (okay, maybe one or two), and complex, flawed characters. I think there’s a real kinship between the reimagined BSG and our dear ‘verse. Also, I loves me some darkness.

Though I admit it might be harder for someone who was actually a fan of the original series. I was never a fan of the old BSG--indeed, I found it excruciating to watch. So, I was wary of the revival because I felt it might be too *close* to the original! So, Starbuck as a chick? Not so much with the bothering me, especially since I find her so much more believable than the original. But if the changes seem hard to stomach, I recommend not looking at it as a “remake” as much as a “based on,” or the network’s favorite term, a “Reimagining.” Don’t view it through the lens of the past. Look at it as an entirely new series than shares a few names & homages with the BSG of old. Judge it on its own merits, not on how it measures up (or not) to the original of your youth.

Oh, and Baltar rocks even harder in the series proper. I won’t say he’s my favorite character because they’re all great, but he’s definitely tied with the rest cast for #1.

Finally, Boxey who? ;)
