Internet is not and some stuff about my drawings
Friday, March 10, 2006

Hey, guys, the internet's been acting screwy and not letting me post, or do much else for that matter..seems to be ok now...gah...

Had a lot of messages regarding how I do what I do ..so here goes for the new fans...

The brush and ink drawings are drawn on strathmoor 3 ply kid finish and are usually no larger then 10x15 (standard comic book size)I usually rough in drawing from whatever source with a 2h pencil. Then using anywhere from a #2 to a #5 watercolor brush I start inking...after it's done I scan it and using some homemade tone screens I add the zip pattern, add a border and my name (If I can remember to) A finished piece takes about two to three hours..

The sepia toned ones are first sketched on a sepia toned (again no larger then 10x15) paper with a 2h pencil. Then using any number pencil down to 8b I start the darks..These are applied very loosely and then blended with various size stumps..lately I've found that with a softer pencil the tones seem to slide around more..that gives it a more painterly feeling to the piece.
When the darks are done I spray the whole thing with a workable fixative and the start applying the whites..I've been using 2b white conte lately...the early ones were chalk but the whites wore off to fast..Then I scan the drawing into the computer add a border and my name..this takes about four hours or less

I'm always surprised at what a piece looks like after I post it..most of the time it several tones lighter then the original...

Thanks to everyone here for all the positive feedback and even for the critical ones..Hey, It's all just lines on paper, and were all fans here...

MAGHAFFAR

I find it incredible that you were turned down flat when you submitted your comic art work... The place must've been a Fox subsidiary... But to be fair to them, it IS hard to see quality work with your head up your pi-gu.

KAELE

Lines on paper are what originally brought our 'verse into being.

Joss couldn't have created this show from air. His tool is the camera, yours is your lines.

Even your work that looks a little on the skewed side to me (things that are a little out of perspective or the proportions are slightly off) it is STILL way far and above most fan art that I've seen.

It's what makes it art. If I wanted a perfect picture, I'd look at the gorram picture!

I wouldn't keep asking to use your stuff for different things if I didn't like it and respect the work. It also drives me to make SURE I have your permission. I keep wondering when you're going to ask me for your royalties!

2X2

Just thought I'd share a little experience I'm sure many of us have had...
I was rewatching Serenity - the Pilot the other day, listening to the commentary again... I probably haven't watched the DVD's as often as those of you who've been fans since 2002, but anyway, I was watching and then suddenly I was like, OH there's that picture of Mal Mphillips did... and naturally it was so easy to see the exact moment you took it from, because your 'lines' are so wonderfully drawn... it was amazing to be able to do that, and just a testament to how fantastic your art is, and I'm so thankful that you share it with us!

NUCLEARDAY

just wanted to second FollowMal's sentiment.

it was the fanart that made me a convert to this site, and the creativity of the 'coats never ceases to amaze me.

might be awhile before we see a continuation of the 'verse, but at least I can count on seeing what new magic MPhillips (and everyone else of course :)has brought forth. ;p

M- your lines on paper are the best I've ever seen. And thanks for being a fan here and sharing with all of us.

I wanted to tell you, M, that I value your drawings the way I value my DVD set of the show and my soundtrack album and all else I treasure about the 'verse.

Your drawings have become for me, an addition to what I already love about Firefly/Serenity. Part and parcel with my beloved show.
