To take a Creative Writing class or not to take...
Saturday, April 15, 2006

(Yup, I'm procrastinating. Told ya I would. )

I don't know why, but I've got it in my head that I should take some Spring/Summer courses, if this semester wasn't hard enough. The advantage of taking some Spring/Summer stuff is that I wouldn't have to take so many courses during the regular year. Right now, I'm just trying to see what's available and what will fit with my degree. I'm sort of limited at this point in my program, plus the computer program that is supposed to show me what I need to take is really picky so stuff I've already taken isn't counting towards what I need (stupid Degree Navigator ).

But one thing I could take, and which really interests me, is the Creative Writing course the university offers. I've taken Creative Writing classes before back in high school and I really like writing. I also like the thought of earning credit for doing something I do when I should be studying anyway The only thing putting me off about taking it is the department's one requirement:

A 20 page portfolio.

The number of pages I have right now: 0. Well, maybe 6 if I count the two Firefly fics I've written but I don't know if the professor/deciding person would consider it. But I could be wrong; the description says the portfolio is just for me to demonstrate my abilities to them. I suppose the content doesn't really matter.

But this is a full year course, a two hour class at 7:00 at night no less. I don't know...

I think your fic would definately qualify for the portfolio, it's creative fiction, and that's what the course is, right? And the more diverse your work the better, I'd say. Don't have anything from the old highschool class laying around, eh? Somehow I lost all my creative writing fic from highschool.. I had one of those blue department of education folder things (might've been an Ontario thing) full of stuff I'd written, but most of it is gone and I've no idea where... it would be fun to look back on that kind of stuff.. but anyway, back to you and your writing...
my hubby took a creative writing major at York university, and he enjoyed it.. I remember him having to do a descriptive piece, and he wrote about Winnie the Pooh being sick after eating too much honey!! It was awesome "Oh bother"...hehehe...

Anyway, you'd probably really enjoy it, maybe not the late night class time, but if you enjoy writing, it would probably be fun, and you could teach the rest of us all the wisdom you aquire!

Creative writing course, huh? Sounds like a real interesting thing to take:)

20-page portfolio? Hmm...that does make things fun. Not like you can throw in your shopping list from last week or a phone message slip, so branching out would be fun. Definitely throw in the fics (cuz it shows 'em you have the interest and the possible raw talent [which you do]);)

Actually, a diverse portfolio might impress the prof even more then you might think. Do it, if it's something you like to do, do it. Perhaps we'll get some shiny new fic of it. Take...I think it's shiny. Let me know what you decide, I'm curious now.
