Anyone else see a problem with this form?

(Off-topic: wrote my first exam today. Only two more to go. Hurray!)

Okay, in my previous blog I was ruminating on whether I should take a Creative Writing class. I'm still on the fence, I'll probably to start to think about this more seriously after exams are done, but I decided to read all the stuff they have on the English Department's website, just to prepare myself. Nothing really swayed my deciding more to the "take the class side", but I did find this application I have to fill out:

http://www.english.ucalgary.ca/creative/366form.pdf

So it looks like a standard form. Name, address and email, student i.d., and so forth. But just beside the email blank space is the weirdest thing. The line reads "I have read the previous page" with a "yes" and "no" blank beside it.

Uh... the application is only one page.

There's also a "Do Not Write in this Space" blank at the bottom and I'm so totally tempted just to take the class so I could write "okay" in the blank space, a la Homer. But back to the weird "previous page" thing. I'm thinking it's a test of your creativeness. Do you check off "yes" or "no"? Either way, both are a lie. Or do you make a third option and write in "what previous page?"

I really think this application is what decides whether you get in the class or not, not the portfolio. I mean, your writing skills can improve with time, but nothing beats a creative answer to a question that doesn't have one.

Be honest, nope didn't read it. Then amend it by saying "What page?" Is there a professor or a department head you can ask? Good luck in any event.

You could always just put a question mark.

Like this:

Q: Did you read the previous page?

A: ?

It has a kind of simplicity to it. Then again if it is some weird test-you'd probably fail. There is nothing creative about a question mark.

that's... interesting... I wonder if it used to be a part of something else, or if they're really just messing with you... but universities rarely seem to have a sense of humour, so...

Anyway, good luck if you decide to sign up for it! There'll be no escaping writing over the summer either way though, you know.. you *have* to write more firefly fic, you just have to.... *G*
