Finding Serenity
Wednesday, July 12, 2006

I read a book today. It was a vastly interesting non-fiction. And that is something I rarely find and even more rarely look for. But this was different. It is a collection of essays about our favorie 'verse. The writers of these essays are all quite respectable and accomplished.

I will not hesitate to say that some of these essays irked me to no end. I had to wonder if some of the writers were really fans at all. Perhaps they weren't.

Some of these essays peeved me to no end. Some had rather blantant errors. One claimed that River shot three men in the episode 'Ariel'. Another called Wash, Jerry Lee 'Wash' Warren, for no apparent reason.

Many of the essays amused me to no end. I laughed aloud many a time, eliciting odd glances from my coworker.

All of the essays challenged me to think harder about Joss creation. Allowed me a clearer view of things. I feel that every Browncoat should get their hands on a copy of this book to free their minds. It is a thrilling experience.

The book is 'Finding Serenity' and is edited by Jane Espenson (you might recall her name, she wrote 'Shindig')

Definitely a cool little book though...one in a series by the mostly edited (except this one) by a guy whose name escapes ment right now. Basically, along with Firefly, you have Alias, Farscape, Harry Potter and Buffy:D

I loved that book. Especially the letters to Fox, the history of companions and the Star Trek crossover.

I ordered "Finding Serenity" with my DVD set. It really is a fun little book and a fairly easy read. The eassy on Inara's role in the 'verse is insightful and well written. I had a hard time getting her, like so many other viewers, until the author Joy Davidson took me on a "Whore History" journey. We do call it the oldest profession for a reason!
It is available on Amazon if you can't find it in your local bookstore.

The Jerry Lee "Wash" Warren thing was pretty widespread before the movie stuff started coming out. I really don't know where it came from, but I know it was out there. It sure was nice to get the movie (and actual names), though.

I also read "Finding Serenity" when I first found the 'verse. I enjoyed it no end and even gave a copy to my brother for Christmas last year.

One of my favorite sections in the book is the glossary of Chinese used in each episode, which have been handily translated into English. Incredibly useful and vastly entertaining! I always have it near at hand when I watch my Firefly.
