Why must you kill my favorites?
Friday, July 14, 2006

(with the exception of Kaylee, but other than watching bits and pieces of episodes so I don't lose the characters' voices for my fics, I haven't watched Firefly much since my Buffy discovery in April.)

I'm in a terrible mood right now, and I decided to go watch Angel by way of therapy. I'm watching early seasons since we only have one and two on DVD, but I am totally miserable about the fact that on both Angel and Buffy, Joss has killed my favorites.

Yes, Illyria was an excellent & utterly fascinating character, but I loved Fred. She's my very most favorite in all of Angel and she even ranks slightly higher than Tara.

So of course, he has to kill her in this brilliantly tragic plotline that makes me cry just thinking of it. (seriously, my brother made me a shirt which reads 'You just can't argue with FRED logic!' and has a few of his favorite Fred quotes on it, and I teared up because he included "please, Wesley, why can't I stay?" and "Would you have loved me?")

WHY?! Why not kill someone useless who I didn't love as a character, hmm?

We all know who we've missed here...

Buffy's Mom!

Doyle's death is probably my favorite. Although I would've preferred it if he hadn't screamed.

Beware of spoilers for those of you who haven't seen Buffy/Angel all the way through*******
Bunny-phobic-ex-demon's name: Anya
You're also forgetting Cordelia.
There does seem to be quite a bit of death in the Jossverse... I sat in the theatre watching Serenity for the first time, absolutely convinced that he was going to kill everyone off and not breathing at all. I was expecting A death because lets face it- it's Joss' M.O. It seemed so unexpected when the whole "a character actually dies" thing first happened. (After all Joss killed off Zander's best friend in the first episode of Buffy.) But now... it's become standard fare among plenty of movies and tv series. (Lost anyone?) I'll admit though that some of the character deaths we've mentioned here have been the most poignant and "memorable" or intense viewing experiences I've had. Joss makes us care about characters so well that we truly grieve when they are "taken away", that doesn't happen too often. Sigh, now I'm all sad...
Sorry for the long-winded-posty-ness. :)

Of course, if the logic of this thread holds true and there's a sequel...

Nice character. In a relationship. Female.

RIP Kaylee.

He like to kill the sweet ones doesn't he. Wash, Fred, Tara...

I like BEB's idea. Can't you just see Wash and Fred having a most amusing conversation?

So let's do the tally shall we? Let's list all the Jossverse good guys that he has killed.
Wash
Book
Tara
Fred
Doyle

Am I missing anyone? I only watched Buffy and Angel intermitently so I'm not sure. Didn't Zander's girl die in the last ep of Buffy? Can't remember her name. Bunnyphobic ex-demon...

I was depressed after Doyle died, and I held a memorial when Glen Quinn himself died.

Yeah...Joss definitely likes to cultivate the trust with creating wonderful characters that make us love so much before has them die in violent ways;)

I like to think there's a Joss character Heaven where they can schmooze and debate and just get up to some craziness:D

Just thought i'd add... I saw a review of Serenity somewhere where the reported said something along the lines of...

"I became convinced that Joss was going to kill off every single one of his characters just in case Fox decided they'd made a mistake and wanted Firefly back."

The ultimate finger to the establishment.

I took me quite a while to start liking Doyle. 5 minutes after I decided he was a great character.... Joss killed him off. Dammit.

For the record... I'll never forgive him for Wash. Never, ever, ever.

Wash.... *sniff* (forget the sniff) *Waaaaahhh*

True observation. I don't really think that Joss does it to tweak his fans. It is all in the story that is held in his head. He knows how to hook and audience. How to play an audience.

I still hate him for Wash though, oh and Tara too... but I haven't seen Angel.
